Joe Malone – Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers

Name: Joe Malone

Age: 22

Employer: Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers

Apprenticeship: Level 7 ACA

After discovering an accountancy apprenticeship could offer a route to becoming an ACA Chartered Accountant, Joe decided to go for it and joined Mitchells.

The Sheffield Hallam University graduate learnt about accounting apprenticeship in his third year of university when he was undertaking a work placement at Mitchells.

He explained: “The ability to learn through work and real-life scenarios is important – that’s one of the main things that appealed to me about an apprenticeship. Although you have the responsibility of performing your role, a lot of importance is also placed on your learning and study time. It’s a great balance.”

Once he has completed his apprenticeship, Joe is looking forward to holding more responsibility in his role of an accountant and also being able to pass on advice and tips to new apprentices.

“The amount of support which is available to me through colleagues and partners/managers at work has been invaluable and I want to be able to offer that to future apprentices.”

Thinking about an apprenticeship? Joe’s advice…

Be sure it is what you want to do, as the Level 7 which I am currently undertaking is definitely a step up from university. Also, ask questions to colleagues, friends or tutors – you can never ask too many!

I am glad I went to university for the experience and for the knowledge I gained in accounting, but I would tell young people to consider going straight into an apprenticeship after school. You will incur no debt by doing an apprenticeship but reach the same point in your career development as someone who has gone to university.
