Chesterfield hospice receives funding for equipment to begin recording the life stories of patients

Ashgate Hospicecare are thrilled to have received over one thousand pounds from the Derbyshire County Council Public Health ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing Small Grants Scheme’.

This grant, which will enable the Hospice to buy the equipment needed to begin their new Oral History Project, will give patients with a life-limiting illness the opportunity to produce audio recordings of their life story.

Arlene Honeyman, Head of Supportive Care at Ashgate Hospicecare, said:-

“For the families of patients who are in a time of grieving, listening to the recording of a loved one who is no longer with us can be a real source of comfort. All of the staff and volunteers involved are really looking forward to being part of such a special project and we hope that these memories of treasured lives can be passed on through the generations with the voice of the loved one secured.”

Sarah Kerry, Day Hospice sister at Ashgate Hospicecare, said:-

“We’re looking forward to having the opportunity to honour patients and their families by offering such a valuable and quality input into recording their precious life story. Not only is the process of telling one’s life story often very therapeutic for patients who know they have limited time, it also empowers them to leave a truly unique gift to the people they love.”

Over the past few months, Ashgate Hospicecare have been working closely with the University of Sheffield, who have been researching and providing oral history services in palliative care for over ten years, to develop this new service for patients and their families.

Once staff and volunteers at the Hospice have completed their training, patients will have the opportunity to tell their life story, in their own time and in their own voice, and to have the recordings saved onto a CD or memory stick as a unique and lasting gift for their loved ones to keep. The patients will also have the option to archive their recording at the University of Sheffield, where it will become a lasting social and historical resource.

One participant said:-

“I never knew I would be able to leave a lovely and unique legacy to my two children when I pass away… I can’t put into words what this has truly meant to me, and hopefully my family.”

The grant that was awarded to the hospice comes also with special thanks to the team at Derbyshire Voluntary Action who supported the hospice in gaining this funding. Ashgate Hospicecare hope to ensure that the Oral History Project is a sustainable project that will continue and grow for years to come.

Chesterfield accountants join global alliance in bid to be recognised as go-to firm

Following a sustained three-year period of significant growth, Shorts Chartered Accountants are delighted to confirm that they have joined Praxity Global Alliance, the world’s largest alliance of independent accounting and consulting firms.

As part of their long-term growth strategy, they wanted to enhance support for those clients who are exploring overseas opportunities, through joining an international association whose members provided a strong worldwide footprint.

Andy Irvine, Managing Partner at Shorts, explained:-

“Increasingly, commerce is becoming ever more global.  This trend, together with UK business starting to adapt to the longer-term implications of Brexit, has resulted in many of our most successful clients actively considering expansion overseas.  Being a member of Praxity will allow us to continue to provide these clients with the high-quality advice they require, confident in the knowledge that our partner firms in other territories are there to support and guide as appropriate.”

“We wanted to join an international alliance which consisted of independent firms very much like our own.  Shorts is focussed on giving the very best advice and service to our clients, whilst ensuring we never lose touch with the fact that people do business with people.  It was clear from the member firms we spoke to, that Praxity embodies these same core principles.”

Welcoming Shorts to the Praxity Alliance, Executive Director Graeme Gordon said:-

“The addition of Shorts enhances Praxity’s presence in the UK and underlines the Alliance’s continuing policy of effective growth based on quality firms in strategic locations. We are unashamedly selective in the firms we welcome to Praxity, each of which retains their own branding, independence and financial responsibility.

“We’re delighted that Shorts has chosen the Alliance to enhance the services it can provide those clients who are considering the opportunities of expansion in an increasingly global marketplace. We look forward to enjoying the distinctive experience and insight their continuing development will bring to the firms in the Alliance”.

Andy Irvine is clear about how Praxity membership can contribute to the future of the firm:-

“Our staff are excited by the news that we have joined Praxity, as this is another significant step in our growth strategy and will help with our goal to be recognised as the go-to firm in our region. The opportunity to work on more international work is one that I know they will find stimulating but they will also be pleased that the individual, independent culture at Shorts is not going to be subsumed into a large corporate monolith.”

Participant firms are handpicked for their size, strength, reputation, financial condition, leadership and strategic geographic relevance. As part of the Alliance, Shorts can connect with 65+ other participant firms and share expertise with the 47,000 people at Praxity firms in more than 100 countries.

Chesterfield Champion invests in Chesterfield with move to new offices

Chesterfield Champion VHS Fletchers are celebrating continued growth of their business with a move to a new office building on Beetwell Street.

VHS Fletchers is a client-focused firm of solicitors dedicated exclusively to crime and regulatory law.  The solicitors acquired the criminal department, and its staff, of local firm Banner Jones in the Spring of 2015  in order to offer expert advice across the entire Derbyshire region, in addition to their offices in Ilkeston and Derby. Since 2015 they have shared their Chesterfield offices with Banner Jones.

The move not only marks growth in the business where other local law firms have closed their criminal offices but a desire to Invest in Chesterfield town centre. The new office, 50 yards from the police station, was chosen so that people needing to speak to the police and want a solicitor can simply pop in on their way past to receive expert advice which, at the police station whilst being interviewed by the police, is always free.

David Gittins, Partner at VHS Fletchers, says:-

“We had the choice to go to an out of town purpose built office but deliberately chose to re invest in the town centre for ease of clients and to assist in the regeneration of the town.

“We are also focused on investing in local people having recently recruited well known local solicitor Denney Lau in addition to local lad Ben Strelley who joined us from a Sheffield firm.”

Further to the move to new offices, VHS Fletchers are also extending their services, having taken the step of retaining a specialist full time Crown court department in Chesterfield to provide the full remit of criminal legal advice to the residents of Chesterfield and surrounding area.

Perez’s Perfect Podium

18 year old Chesterfield Porsche Carrera Cup GB star Seb Perez grabbed a well earned podium place in his Amigos Team Parker Racing Porsche 911 GT3 at Donington Park last weekend.

The up and coming Derbyshire racer took a second ProAm contender place this was the  highlight after a tough weekend at the Leicestershire circuit for him and his Nottinghamshire Team mate George Gamble.

Perez knew coming to his local circuit he needed to get some points after an eventful weekend at Brand Hatch three weeks ago that saw him shunted off in first competitive race in the Porsche and a 10th in race two.

Perez’s qualifying session on Saturday was hampered by bad weather, it rained all session and there was no chance of the track drying, needless to say Perez in his usual style gave it all he had got and took the Amigos Porsche to finish second in the ProAm running and seventh on the grid seeing Team mate Gamble back of the grid after a technical issue with his car.

Race one saw Perez from 4th row of the grid struggle in the conditions and decide to gain points rather than a category win.

From the first lap the race many position changes took place, this was not without excitement and a spin coming out of Redgate sent Perez down the pack of the 23 starters and after an exhausting 23 laps was happy to see the chequered flag in 11th position and take fourth in ProAm.

A Sunday afternoon second race saw the 1.97 mile Donington track dry but very cold with 40 minutes and 33 laps ahead of  the 23 cars and Perez starting from 6th on the grid.

As the lights went out he made a great start but on lap seven an infield spin could well have seen his race over but the Amigos Team Parker Racing race ace took a charge back into the pack for the next 26 laps and aided by a few safety car laps saw him take 8th place and despite the spin could well have seen a race podium or top five place.

Perez was still happy taking second and a maiden podium in the ProAm category in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB after 4 rounds.

An elated Perez after coming off the podium said

“It’s been a really good weekend overall and to take my first ever Carrera Cup podium at my home circuit is really the icing on the cake”.

“Race one was difficult yesterday (Saturday) so the focus was really on today and I had a really good pace from the off. The contact at the beginning was really unfortunate, not sure if Dan (Harper) had a well car to be honest and I went for a move which didn’t really work and went right to back of pack. When the safety car came out it helped us tremendously.

The weekend we had at Brands was a nightmare so to get the result here is fantastic”.

Perez leaves Donington 4th in the ProAm and 5th in the Rookie category of the Championship, Amigo Team Parker Racing are currently fourth in the Team Championship.

The next round of the season will see Perez travel to the iconic Italian circuit of Monza as a support race to the European Le Mans Series on the 12th/13th May and back on home soil again at Oulton Park on 9th / 10th June where all the action will be on ITV4.

University of Derby nursing students crowned winners at Student Nursing Times Awards 2018

Two students who set up the University of Derby’s Nursing Society have scooped a top prize at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2018.

Kelly-Hellen Hitchcock and Laura MacPherson, both third-year Mental Health students, set up the society to unite student nurses from across all cohorts and disciplines at Derby. The society, which has around 100 members, aims to provide peer support, as well as organise social events and career-focused trips.

The Chesterfield Campus has enabled the University to build on its experience and success to offer an outstanding learning environment and some of the best facilities available in the UK for our Adult Nursing degrees and Health and Social Care courses. Combined with the strong relationships with local healthcare providers and other employers, it ensures some of the highest employability rates for their students in the UK, with 100% of their nursing students in a professional or managerial job six months after finishing their course.

Following a record-breaking year of award entries, the winners of the Student Nursing Times Awards were announced at a ceremony held at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Student nurses, universities and organisations from across the student nursing community were honoured in 19 categories dedicated to celebrating exceptional achievement.

After excelling during the rigorous judging process, Kelly-Hellen and Laura were announced winners of the Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs category.

Kelly-Hellen said:-

“It is so amazing to win this award and be able to showcase all of the work we have put in and the fantastic things we have achieved with the Nursing Society over the last 18 months.

“Most of all, it’s a great chance for us to thank all of the people who have been a part of our journey. While it’s our names on the award, so many people have helped us get here, and we accept it on their behalf too. It’s such a surprise and an absolute joy to end our time as student nurses on such an incredible high.”

Laura added:-

“I hope we’ve made a difference to the student nursing experience at the University of Derby, which will continue long after we have left. This is an amazing way to recognise and celebrate nearly finishing our training.”

As part of the Nursing Society, Kelly-Hellen and Laura, who are both Academic Representatives for their course at Derby, arranged trips to the Royal College of Nursing Congress and Nursing Times Careers Fair, organised a Nursing Society Christmas lecture with academics from across the university and guest speakers, as well as raising more than £800 funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The pair have also actively encouraged students to take part in the national Scrap the Cap Campaign – urging the government to ditch the 1% cap on public sector pay – completing postcards, attending an organised rally in London, and inviting local MP Chris Williamson to speak to student nurses.

Dr Paula Holt, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dean of the College of Health and Social Care at the University of Derby, said:-

“This is an exceptional achievement and we are extremely proud of our engaged, committed and talented students, who are so passionate about their studies and supporting others.

“The Nursing Society has been fundamental in helping students to communicate with one another and share their experiences of studying at Derby and we hope it continues in the future, helping the next generation of trainee nurses.”

Jenni Middleton, Nursing Times Editor and host of the Student Nursing Times Award, added:-

“Every year, our judges are stunned by the standard of our entrants, and this year in particular they commented to me just how much better the quality of applicants was. We are delighted to be handing out these trophies to the very best students, and the organisations that are supporting them and helping them to become nurses.”

Going into their eighth year, the Student Nursing Times Awards will return in 2019 and are the only awards recognising student nurses and nurse education.

Emotional Reunion for Alec & Carol

Representatives from the Air Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance attended Chesterfield’s game at the Proact against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday to receive the proceeds of a collection.

A total of £3,700 was raised at Chesterfield’s game against Notts County in March, meaning that each organisation received £1,850.

The collection was organised by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust in recognition of the life-saving efforts of both organisations during the game against Lincoln City.

Season ticket holder Alec Freeman received CPR from St John Ambulance first-aider Carol Crompton after collapsing in the East Stand before being taken by Air Ambulance to a hospital in Derby.

Club officials were delighted to welcome Alec as a guest on Saturday and he enjoyed an emotional reunion with Carol in the Brampton Brewery 1866 Lounge before the game.

“Meeting Carol was very emotional,” said Alec. “It’s hard to say how thankful I am to Carol for what she did for me. Saying ‘thank you’ just doesn’t seem enough.”

Carol’s life-saving contribution saw her presented with an Award of Merit by the club, handed over by Alec.
