Pioneering crime-cutting scheme will help make shopping safer in Derbyshire

A pioneering online scheme to help make High Street shopping safer and cut crime is being adopted in Derbyshire.

The county’s Business Crime Reduction Partnership will see Derbyshire Police, East Midlands Chamber*, retailers and participating local authorities all working together for the common goal.

The award-winning Chamber* already operates Shopwatch – a successful radio-based alert system for retailers – in Chesterfield, Bakewell, Matlock and Staveley.

But the new scheme operates online, offering immediate and wider dissemination of information and making it easier for the police to create intelligence for reports to steer operations or evidence for prosecutions.

The idea is the brainchild of the team behind the Chamber’s Shopwatch scheme.

Project leader Jackie Roberts said: “Retail crime is one of the few crimes that continues to grow and affects everyone. Even low-level retail crime has major implications for business turnover and viability, with knock-on effects on the local community and economy.”

She added: “During the past 18–24 months, town and city centre retailers have reported significant increases in anti-social behaviour and associated crimes.

“With resources stretched in most businesses and police forces, smarter working methods are needed to reduce the issues retailers face and to highlight offenders.

“Ever-tighter controls of resources mean that the police and shopkeepers are finding it harder and harder to bring offenders to justice, which creates an environment that encourages further offences.”

Under the new initiative, businesses would sign up to the web-based service. They could then upload information about shoplifters operating in an area and report other crimes.

They would also receive instant updates through the website and other online means, such as messaging, social media or emails, alerting them to crimes in their area as they happen, including descriptions of people to watch for.

The service will be staffed by dedicated operators who would alert police and other businesses immediately crimes are reported, with the aim of reducing crime through partnership working.

Jackie added: “By bringing the scheme online and working with partners most closely involved in trying to reduce crime or those most affected by it, the Chamber can help members and other businesses to reduce this blight on the retail community.”

Chris Hobson, the Chamber’s Director of Policy, said: “The Chamber’s vision is to enhance East Midlands businesses and communities and this is an obvious and very positive way of delivering that objective. We are very pleased to be working with the police on this initiative.”

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa said: “Too often you hear the view that business crime is a victimless crime. Well, not in Derbyshire.  I understand that business owners, staff, shareholders and actually, ultimately, customers pay too high a price for crimes against businesses.

“This scheme sets out to make retail areas in Derbyshire safer and therefore more enjoyable places to visit.  In turn, that encourages more customers, which helps the local economy. I’m very proud to be involved.”

The Police and Crime Commissioner’s office and the Chamber are jointly funding the scheme initially, the PCC contributing £30,000 to the cost.

The new scheme will also support existing pubwatch or shopwatch projects in Derbyshire. For further information call Jackie Roberts on 0333 320 0333 (ext 2061) or email jackie.roberts@emc-dnl.co.uk or visit https://bit.ly/2E3Oui4.

Pop Superstar STEPS into Chesterfield Panto

Chesterfield Theatres have announced that Lee Latchford-Evans from pop super group Steps will headline in the title role of this year’s spectacular family pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, at the Pomegranate Theatre.

Lee joined pop phenomenon Steps in 1997 and achieved huge success with the band selling in excess of 21 million records worldwide and winning numerous awards including the prestigious BRIT award for Best Live Act in 2000.

After a decade apart pursuing individual projects, Steps re-formed in 2011 with top-rated fly-on-the wall documentary Steps Reunion. The overwhelming popularity with which Steps’ return was received sparked a second TV series, Steps on the Road, a sell-out arena tour and a No. 1 album.

To celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2017, Steps released their fifth studio album, Tears on the Dancefloor which, again, topped the charts and had a sell-out arena tour, Party on the Dancefloor, leading to their epic outdoor Summer of Steps Tour in 2018. Following this, the band announced that they will be starting work on their hotly anticipated sixth studio album in 2019.

Away from the band, experienced actor Lee has also starred in musicals in London’s West End including playing Teen Angel in Grease, Niko Nikovsky in Eurobeat and touring with the stage version of All Creatures Great and Small. Lee’s feature films include Cash & Curry, The Rizen, DeadRinger and, most recently, horror comedy Paintball Massacre which completed filming in 2019. He has also starred in numerous pantomimes throughout the UK.

Pantomime producer Paul Holman said: “I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect Jack for Chesterfield’s panto. Lee has charm, good looks and, of course, an outstanding singing voice making him a ‘Step’ above the rest.”

With floor-filling songs, rip-roaring comedy, awe-inspiring special effects and a magical story that all the family can enjoy, Jack and the Beanstalk promises to be Chesterfield’s most STEP-tacular panto yet!

Royal’s Subsidiary Company To Give Staff a Voice on the Board

The new subsidiary company set up by Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is set to offer its employees a ‘voice on the Board’ – to make sure it listens to its staff and takes account of their views when making decisions.

Derbyshire Support & Facilities Services (DSFS) went live at the end of March.  Around 730 staff from IT, finance, estates and facilities, procurement and clinical engineering, transferred to the company taking their NHS terms and conditions with them and protected for at least 25 years.  In a challenging financial environment the move has safeguarded these valuable services and jobs from third party outsourcing, staffing reductions and redundancies.

Directors leading the company have pledged to involve staff in how the organisation is run and improved and as part of this commitment to staff engagement are advertising for three Employee Associate Directors to work in partnership with them on the Board.  The roles are open to all staff working within the subsidiary – as long as they have been in post since at least May 1 2018.  The position attracts a responsibility allowance of £3000 per year on top of salary*.

Speaking about the new development, Managing Director of DSFS, John Williams comments: “This is a really exciting step for our new venture.  Creating a shared sense of purpose, where the Board and its staff work together for the benefit of the company is something we are keen to realise. It’s an important part of the culture we want to develop and embed.

“We’re inviting applications from all interested DSFS staff that want to see our subsidiary grow and succeed.  We are determined to build on the positive staff engagement programme we ran as part of the process of setting up DSFS.”

The three associates will actively participate in Board meetings – enabling directors to use the knowledge and ideas of its workforce and supporting decision-making and improvement.  They’ll act as DSFS ambassadors, championing new initiatives, connecting with colleagues across DSFS teams and promoting opportunities for them to get involved.

The positions are already out to advert – with the new Employee Associate Directors expected to be in post by June 2019.

Improvements Lead To Good Rating For Royal Primary Care Services

More than 30,000 patients registered with the five GP surgeries that make up Royal Primary Care (RPC) can be assured that their services meet high-standards set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – thanks to a number of improvements actioned over the past year.

Earlier this year the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England announced that it would be carrying out a comprehensive inspection of services as part of its annual programme.  Inspectors visited RPC sites on April 4 2019.

In its reports published today (Wednesday, May 8 2019) the CQC has awarded services for both Chesterfield and Clay Cross localities an overall rating of Good.

In its commentary, the CQC highlights that a range of positive improvements for patients have been made since the last inspections in 2018 – taking RPC out of ‘requires improvement’.

Dr Peter Scriven, Royal Primary Care’s Divisional Director and one of its GPs comments:

“We are absolutely delighted to receive this Good rating from the CQC.  I am extremely proud of the whole RPC team.  They have worked incredibly hard to improve patient experiences and services.  We are in a much stronger position than a year ago and this has been recognised by the independent inspection body.  We know we have more improvements to make – and we are all committed to put in the time to make them happen.”

The CQC’s inspectors found that:

  • Patients’ care was provided in a way that kept them safe and protected
  • Patients received effective care and treatment that met their needs
  • Staff were kind and respectful to patients and involved them in decisions about their care
  • Services were organised to meet patients’ needs with improvements to enable timely access
  • Royal Primary Care is led and managed in a way that promotes delivery of good quality, person-centred care
