Essential Site Skills emphasise importance of staff wellbeing

For National Work Life Week (7 – 11 October 2019), Essential Site Skills (ESS) took time to recognise their hard-working staff members and their families, as well as their strong belief in a modern working ethos.

As an award-winning, nationwide training provider, ESS promote a working culture where the passion that their business was founded on is visible. They constantly encourage their employees to continue their professional development within their careers, making a point to always listen and offer learning opportunities where possible.

Excessive working hours and a lack of flexibility can lead to a lack of productivity and an unmotivated, uncaring workforce. Ensuring employees are supported in their working week creates a positive outlook, engagement, motivation and a loyalty to the organisation.

ESS are big believers in helping to ensure their employees’ wellbeing is supported both at home and at work. The whole team embolden one another, encourage engagement and champion each individual success – both in and out of work.

Meet Client Sales Co-ordinator, Laura Wagstaff with two of her children, Bronte and Olan.

Laura said: “Working for ESS has been a breath of fresh air for me. I have never felt at ease asking to nip off to children’s school events or appointments and was always weighed down heavily with the guilt, worried that this would affect my progression at work. That is not ESS at all, all managers are so supportive of my home-life commitments which has meant that I can still have a fantastic career as well as being a mummy!”

Meet Training and Consultancy Manager, Michael Harcourt, spending some quality time with his daughter Mila.

Michael said: “Working for ESS has enabled me to spend time at home with my daughter when I’m not out training. This is a huge benefit for me and keeps me motivated to work hard for the company. Work life balance is a big part of the ESS ethos and is actively promoted by my line manager.”

Meet Training and Consultancy Instructor, Matt Fletcher with his two daughters Esme and Lily.

Matt said “Creating a balance between work and family time is so important. ESS have always supported me and I’m given the flexibility to manage my own training diary, so that I can be around for school plays, sports days, drop offs and pick ups.  I really value this time with my children and wife. Your relationship with your employer is a two way street and I can honestly say, after the support I have received they will be repaid in my hard work and graft. That’s the key to a healthy and positive workforce, take care of them and they will give you everything back.”

Every team member at ESS has the opportunity to not only work flexibly, but also do what they enjoy, developing their learning with further training. ESS are a happy and forward thinking team; with a strong belief in the quality and integrity of the training delivered.

Ashgate Hospicecare’s Family Bedroom transformed to ensure families can stay together

Vine Hotels have renovated Ashgate Hospicecare’s Family Bedroom free of charge to ensure that families can stay together.

The Family Bedroom is now open for families and friends visiting patients on the ward. The newly renovated bedroom and en-suite provide a beautiful, homely, and comfortable space for families. It allows them to remain close to their loved ones at the hospice.

Julie Foster, Matron at Ashgate Hospicecare, said: “This fantastic project has only been possible thanks to Vine Hotels, who have gone the extra mile to help transform their local hospice.”

Vine Hotels have created a comfortable, restful and beautifully furnished space for families and friends visiting their loved ones here at Ashgate Hospicecare.

The Family Bedroom is incredibly important for our patients. It provides the calming reassurance that their families and friends are able to stay overnight at the hospice and are near to them. For families and friends, the Family Bedroom provides all the facilities required to ensure a very comfortable stay without having to leave the hospice, especially when time is most precious.

On behalf of everyone at Ashgate Hospicecare, thank you so much Vine Hotels for enabling us to provide the excellence in care that we strive for.”

Dawn Langan, from Hastings, knows how vital the Family Bedroom is to people. She said, “When my mum came into the hospice, I was really scared. However, as soon as I saw how well my mum was treated here, it completely changed my mind about hospice care. The fact that mum could have her own room meant that she was able to maintain her dignity right up to the end. We could go to the other family areas at the hospice to relax and make a drink and to give mum the privacy she needed.

Being able to use the Family Bedroom made a huge difference to us in my mum’s final days. My children and I were able to spend much more time with her, rather than worrying about finding somewhere to stay or having to come back and forth to the hospice when we didn’t know how long we had left with her.

The staff would always check on us and they even kept sandwiches aside for us so that we didn’t have to worry about getting food in the middle of the night. We were able to spend those last days making more precious memories with mum and those memories will always stay with us. I know that having a beautifully renovated Family Bedroom will make a world of difference to so many families going through the worst time of their life.”

Garin Davies, Chief Executive of Vine Hotels, which has five hotels and venues across Sheffield said: “Ashgate Hospicecare provides a vital service to lots of families and we wanted to be able to help in some way. We were pleased to be given the opportunity to lend a hand and refurbish the room. We know how important the facility is and wanted to ensure that Ashgate could enable families to stay together.”

To find out more about how you could support this project, call Ali, Capital Appeal and Partnerships Manager on 01246 567250 or email alison.ward-foster@ashgatehospicecare.org.uk.

BHP receives national recognition for pioneering AI technology

Yorkshire and North Derbyshire’s largest independent firm of Chartered Accountants, BHP, has received national recognition for its work championing cutting-edge technology to improve financial reporting.

The leading regional firm, which has offices in Chesterfield, York, Sheffield, Cleckheaton and Leeds, scooped Audit Team of the Year at the British Accountancy Awards – run in partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

The award recognises BHP’s market-leading use of data analytics in audit. BHP is one of the pioneers of AI software, Inflo, which offers clients previously unobtainable insight into their business.

Inflo mines 100% of data meaning improved fraud detection, enhanced insight into anomaly transactions, and better assurance over business processes for clients.

Lisa Leighton, Joint Managing Partner at BHP, said: “We couldn’t be prouder of this achievement.”

“While quality, added-value and proactive advice have always been central in our audit work, we’re now standing out in our market for how we’re transforming our audit process with AI technology.”

“Not only are we pioneering the use of data analytics with our clients and fundamentally changing BHP as a business in doing so, but the firm is going further to actively champion this technology in the mid-size sector to help improve industry standards across the board.”

BHP is quickly becoming a thought leader in this area, speaking at industry events, conducting webinars and writing articles, and BHP’s Data Analytics Manager has been approached to support with a research project commissioned by the ICEAW.

The team at BHP also share their knowledge and learning internationally and have presented at the Kreston European Conference.

The British Accountancy Awards 2019 took place at The Grosvenor House Hotel on 25 September. Hosted by Sean Lock, over 800 guests were welcomed to celebrate excellence, professionalism, and innovation in accountancy.

Not only do these awards recognise key achievements in the market from an accountants in practice perspective but they also recognise excellence with practitioners working across the industry. Smaller regional practices and individual excellence are also celebrated with multiple awards for each.

Earlier this year, BHP was recognised by the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list – now in its 19th year, the hard-fought and nationally-celebrated list recognises the very best in employee engagement around the country.

BHP was also recently awarded Mid-Tier Firm of the Year and Best Employer of the Year at the Yorkshire Accountancy Awards and recognised with the Community Award at the Yorkshire Dealmakers Awards.

With more than 300 staff, including 33 partners, over the last 10 years BHP has increased turnover from £8m to over £22m.

Perez Finishes fifth in Porsche Championship

Chesterfield’s race ace Seb Perez finished fifth in the season finale of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship at Brands Hatch at the weekend (12 – 13 October).

The 20-year-old has had an up and down season in the Pro class series that saw him in the points at the seasons final two races, finishing 6th and 7th in the championship on the Kent 2.4 mile Grand Prix circuit.

Finishing short of a podium slot at the weekend, and in the championship, was made up for by his teammate George Gamble taking two podium finishes, a second and third place, that saw him take the championship third place finish to the season and their team Amigos Redline Racing finishing runners up.

The weekend was going to be hard for last season’s Pro Am champion knowing that he wouldn’t make the mark to be champion but points made prizes for him and the team and he did well on that score.

The weekend’s free practice sessions on Friday saw a mixture of weather conditions and all the teams knew this would be the case for the whole of the weekend, Perez finished 7th and  10th   out of the 22 cars taking part where tyre choice was the big issue due a drying track followed by rain rapidly changing the conditions.

Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session saw Perez finish 9th and again on a damp track with drizzle falling for most of the session with a mix of some red flagged sessions slowing the test down but still saw less than two seconds separate the top 13 cars to finish.

As the lights went out for race one Perez sliced past rookie driver Tom Roche and by the end of lap one he was in 7th place, by lap four he was in 6th place where he remained for the other 11 laps out of 17.

A part reverse grid for race two saw Perez line up on row 3 he knew that this would be a difficult race having Josh Webster alongside and Gamble in front who were in battle for a championship runner up slot as the championship had been decided two weeks earlier at Silverstone where Dan Harper took the crown.

Perez maintained some good laps and kept up with both Webster and Gamble but couldn’t make the move, a three lap safety car stint at the end of lap 12 bunched the pack together and as the lights went out on the car Jamie Orton managed to pass putting Seb into 7th place where he remained for the last two laps.

After the race Perez said: “We had a good final two races. It has been fantastic competing in Porsche for the past two years and great to be with Redline Racing. They are a brilliant team and I have enjoyed every minute with them.”

He added: “We haven’t decided on anything for 2020 yet, but we have options both in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB as well as further afield, so we’ll see what we decide on. I have some rallies planned now for the winter so that will be great fun.”

The 2019 season has had some highs and lows for Perez that has seen him take two podium places during the season as well as racing supporting the British Grand Prix as a guest in the International Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup and also seeing him action when the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship was support race to the FIA World Endurance Championship both at Silverstone.

University of Derby and Chatsworth team up to measure stately home’s economic impact

The University of Derby has been commissioned by one of the country’s most popular stately homes to measure its economic impact after agreeing a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) initiative with Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire’s Peak District.

The partnership aims to provide the team at Chatsworth with the skills needed to accurately assess the effect that the estate, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and its commercial activities have on the region.

Under the terms of the partnership, the University will recruit a graduate associate with the required level of economic expertise in business analytics to work on the project for a two-year period. During their time working with Chatsworth, the KTP recruit will introduce and embed knowledge into their practice and processes.

The graduate associate, supported by two economics academics from the University of Derby – Dr Nicola Lynch and Melanie Powell – will create mechanisms for data collection and measurement to make it possible for the economic impact work to be done in-house, rather than having to hire external consultants, which has been done in the past.

Professor Carley Foster, Head of the University of Derby’s Centre for Business Improvement, is overseeing the initiative.

She said: “This is a really exciting project and a wonderful opportunity for the graduate that we recruit. Using their expertise, they will enable staff at Chatsworth to learn how they can measure the economic impact of its commercial activity in a standardised way. The task will be to develop data collection tools and templates, complete with user guides, which staff at Chatsworth can use to support their changing needs in the future.”

“This has the benefit of enhancing the skills and knowledge of current employees, something which can’t be gained by hiring external consultants. As well as aiding the professional development of the staff, it will help Chatsworth to evaluate its activity in-house all year round, which will give its staff greater control and ownership of that process.”

Andrew Lavery, Chief Executive of the Chatsworth House Trust, said: “Everyone at Chatsworth is very aware of the fact that our future is intrinsically linked to the future of our local communities, employees, visitors, suppliers and partners. This awareness has been the driving force behind a new initiative called Our Commitment to Our Shared Future, which details 10 goals we will deliver over the next 10 years, including doubling the benefit to local economies from our organisations.”

“The insight that this partnership with the University of Derby will bring will be invaluable in helping us deliver this goal, and will provide the team at Chatsworth with new skills to make more informed decisions for the benefit of the Chatsworth House Trust charity, and our local communities, for many years to come. It is also an excellent opportunity to further strengthen the relationship we have with the University.”

The University of Derby signed a strategic partnership agreement with the Chatsworth House Trust and the Devonshire Educational Trust in 2018, pledging to work more closely together.
The University’s Chancellor is Lord William Burlington, son of the current Duke of Devonshire, who had himself been Chancellor for more than a decade before stepping down.

Professor Kathryn Mitchell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, said: “I am delighted that our long and fruitful relationship with Chatsworth and the Devonshire Educational Trust includes initiatives such as this Knowledge Transfer Partnership. To work together in practical ways was at the heart of our strategic partnership agreement.

“Our solution-focused approach is proving successful and we are delighted to have been selected to work with one of the premier tourism businesses in the country.

“Not only will this project provide valuable insights to Chatsworth and its staff, but it will provide a superb opportunity for the successful graduate to work alongside one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations with the support of University of Derby academics.”

The deadline for applications for the graduate associate post is Wednesday 16 October. Click here for more information about the project and applying for the post.

Elder Way becomes Chesterfield Champion

Pledging its continued support to Chesterfield town centre, Jomast Developments, the company behind the multi-million-pound regeneration of the former Co-op department store on Elder Way, has become a Chesterfield Champion.

Jomast’s Elder Way project is now one of more than 180 champions who are helping to drive development of the local economy and raise the profile of the town.

Welcoming Elder Way to the Champions’ line up, Dominic Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager said: “Elder Way is a pivotal site in Chesterfield that is helping transform the town’s Northern Gateway. I’m delighted to welcome the scheme onboard as a Champion showing that the town is a great place to not only live and work but also invest.”

Since investing in Chesterfield in 2016, Jomast has spent millions transforming the top two floors of the four storey building into a Premier Inn hotel, breathing life into the town’s famous 1930s, Mock-Tudor building and helping create more than 20 new jobs.

Further jobs are set to be created in the town as the basement and ground floor of Elder Way will be developed into restaurant and leisure space.

Part of the Destination Chesterfield campaign, the Chesterfield Champions scheme is funded through support from local businesses and Chesterfield Borough Council which has worked closely with Jomast to regenerate Elder Way.

Mark Hill (right), Commercial Property Director at Jomast Developments, added: “Since investing in Chesterfield we continue to be impressed by the public and private approach to helping the town reach its potential. It is very much a joint effort that is reaping rewards in terms of attracting investment to the town and we’re delighted that Elder Way is able to play a role in this.”

Stanedge Golf Club’s Owner shortlisted for national award

Fame Tate, Owner and Director of Stanedge Golf Club in Chesterfield, has been shortlisted into the final two for the “Newcomer Manager of the Year” title at the 2019 GCMA Golf Club Management Awards.

The 2019 Awards will recognise the outstanding work going on at golf clubs, and acknowledge all key personnel who are working together to ensure the successful operation of the club.

Fame has lived in Chesterfield all of her life, despite travelling whilst she was playing golf on the Ladies European and Asian Tours. Earlier this year, Fame was was named the PGA Female Assistant of the Year and the Top PGA student for the Midlands 2019, plus being crowned the winner of the “Outstanding Achievement” award for the English Women’s-North Business Awards category (below).

In February this year, she purchased Stanedge Golf Club, which closed in December 2018 and had lost all of it’s members. Fame and her team are now in their eighth month of business and what an incredible eight months it has been, in more ways than one.

How do you feel about being shortlisted for this award?

I am absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the award and I feel incredibly proud of what we accomplished in a matter of months at the club and it is fantastic for this to be recognised.

What was your thought process when you had purchased Stanedge Golf Club?

When I purchased the club, I had a strong vision, ambitions and aspirations of what I wanted to achieve in terms of the club as a whole. But in simple terms, I had to ask myself what was our future? What did we need to do to get there? and how did we need to work together? I wanted the club to thrive again in every aspect and I strongly believed that it had fantastic potential and could be achieved. Of course there is a lot more to it than that. I had done an enormous amount of market research and demographic segmentation, plus having a strategic business plan in place.

My passion since retiring from professional golf has always been getting more people into golf by giving them the opportunity to learn and play but not only to recruit them but to retain them. I am guided by what I want to achieve at the club and its future. Its not just a vision, its what the vision does. This is what drives my ambition everyday. I care and it matters and that it is what has made me put all of my energies into the transformation of Stanedge. As a business we have grown and developed massively over the last few months and we have had to move and change with it. All along I have been mindful that where ever possible I have had to re-invest back into the business to make it grow, develop and thrive.

You have been so successful in turning the club around from zero to over a 100 members in a matter of months, what has been to key to that?

The biggest thing for me from the start was for people to see change. The clubhouse was incredibly run down, which is putting it mildly and the golf course wasn’t in great shape. Everything just needed an awful lot of TLC. The previous members had lost faith in the club and visitors were not coming to club due to the poor condition of everything. I wanted everyone to see that we were there for the long haul, that we meant business and wanted to put Stanedge Golf Club back on the map. As a consequence of this, the clubhouse has been completely refurbished and the golf course has undergone an extensive improvement plan, which is obviously an on going process.

We have put so many initiatives in place since February to raise awareness and the profile of the club. We held an Easter fun open day in April which attracted over 100 people and was a huge success. We run various coaching initiatives for existing golfers and those who are new to the game, for ladies, men, juniors and mixed coaching. We have held a 6@6 league for Congu and non-Congu golfers, social nights, various offers to incentivise people to come to the club for golf or food….the list goes on and on.

You can not underestimate the power of word of mouth and over the last eight months we have re-gained people’s faith and trust back in the club. We have created an environment that is accessible, affordable, friendly, social and welcoming for everyone, whether you are a golfer or not. We don’t have a dress code but people are still respectful of that. We are constantly developing what we are doing at the club, to make Stanedge a better place for members and visitors. For me it is more than just golf, we are providing people with an experience and building a new community and culture.

You obviously have to wear many different hats being the owner, the golf club manager and PGA professional at the club…how have you managed to juggle all of these very different roles and your staff?

Time management has been key however, sometimes there haven’t been enough hours in the day, plus hard work and the ability to delegate. As a manager of the club, I won’t ask any member of team to do something that I am not willing to do myself. I accept that I can’t do everything. I have a small but very strong team of staff who I trust with their responsibilities, which enables me to focus my time on other elements of the business. It has been so important for me to surround myself with the right people. Every member of my team brings something different to the table which is crucial as everyone sees things differently. I encourage collaboration, team meetings and brain storming sessions. I want every member of my team to feel empowered and have a sense of ownership, giving them a reason to go the extra mile. The whole team needs to succeed, no matter what their role or responsibility in order for the club to be a continued success. There is no committee structure in place at the club so if a decision is made, we are in a unique position to be able to run with it. After all of the decisions that are made we reflect, re-assess and change accordingly for the better of the golf club.

I believe that this is only the start for Stanedge Golf Club.

The 2019 awards ceremony will be held at the biannual GCMA Conference, held from 10-12 November 2019 at De Vere Cotswold Water Park.
