Businesses encouraged to invest in Derbyshire

Derbyshire County Council have launched a new service to raise the profile of the county among the business community and encourage more companies to invest in the area.

It will:

  • raise the profile of Derbyshire globally to secure investment and create new jobs, acting as a shop window for why Derbyshire should be a destination of choice for investors
  • make it easy for investors to choose Derbyshire by providing a one-stop shop offering quality business support tailored to individual businesses’ needs ranging from help and support to choose the right site in Derbyshire to provide information on workforce skills and assisting with recruitment as well as offering guidance on financial incentives
  • use market intelligence to target businesses in growth sectors to attract them to Derbyshire

The service was launched on behalf of the Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DEP) at an event today on Friday 24 May 2019, attended by around 150 guests including investors, commercial property agents and local businesses.

Guest speakers at the event held at Holiday Inn, South Normanton, included Leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Barry Lewis – speaking about the commitment to unlocking growth and promoting investment – and Managing Director of Toyota Europe Tony Walker, talking about why Toyota invested in Derbyshire and continues to grow its business in the county.

Also in the spotlight was Sally Ambrose from Chatsworth, talking about the estate’s impact on the local economy and how, as a key Derbyshire landowner, it will drive future opportunities to promote development in Derbyshire. And delegates also heard from Peter Storey, Head of Markham Vale, explaining what lies ahead for the council’s premier enterprise zone and why it has been so successful at attracting inward investment to date.

Councillor Lewis said: “Driving economic growth and creating more job opportunities for local people is a vital part of our ambitious plans for the future.”

“Derbyshire has so much to offer investors at both a national and global level. Its unique position at the heart of the UK together with excellent transport links and quality of life make our county an attractive place for businesses to locate invest, live, work and stay.”

Chairman of the Derbyshire Enterprise Partnership Richard Horsley added: “With its rich heritage of innovation and a broad range of development opportunities, Derbyshire has one of the strongest economic performances in the country and I am proud to launch the new service today.”

“With a diverse economy ranging from advanced manufacturing through to creative and digital industries, minerals and aggregates and tourism there are many opportunities for businesses and investors alike to thrive.”

Chesterfield is prime location for IT firm Addooco

Last year marked IT firm Addooco’s 10th year of trading, celebrating with the expansion of the team and its client base. One year on and the company has reported its most successful year to date, counting its prime Chesterfield location as one of its success factors.

Addooco provides technical services for businesses that haven’t got a dedicated in-house IT team. Their overarching objective is to realise value for their clients through technically superior digital strategies. With a rapidly growing base of clients, its clear this resonates with businesses in a broad range of industries.

Born in 2008 from a group of technically savvy people, Addooco saw the potential to create a business out of their skills. Over ten years later, the firm has rapidly grown and with the addition of new engineers, Addooco recognised the need to develop its people.

They enlisted the help of BSA Training (www.bsa-training.co.uk), an award-winning training provider dedicated to improving people and organisations. Run by trainer Bobby Singh, the business offers a multitude of courses such as Leadership & Management, Business Strategy, Sales and Marketing, Team Development, Communication and Customer Care.

Paul Walters of Addooco explains: “We needed someone with the capability to offer leadership training as well as coaching for our more junior staff members and employee surveys for staff at all levels.”

The training, led by Bobby Singh, covered a wide range of topics; including strategic planning, leadership, management, employee engagement, and giving and receiving feedback. “We have worked really hard to ensure our headquarters provides a comfortable working atmosphere,” says Paul. “It provided the perfect opportunity to reward our staff by investing in their transferable skills.”

Addooco’s strategically located base allows their engineers to physically service client requirements onsite where necessary from Newcastle to London in under two hours. Organisations both nationally and those with international operations benefit from their cloud solutions and digital strategies. Now, their clients are fully supported by a highly trained and physically available team.

Paul takes part in the leadership and management training himself and also helps facilitate the engineering workshops. “Bobby came highly recommended, but his previous experience and great programme of work were the deciding factors,” he explains. “His approach is very smart, friendly and approachable. He easily finds out what the challenge is even if you are struggling to articulate it.”

While Addooco has grown rapidly, it is an organisation that has always looked after its people while also focusing on customer requests. During his time working as an external consultant for the company, Bobby Singh recognised this. “From day one, Addooco have identified the importance of investing in its people. They don’t think of it as a cost to the business, but more about how it adds value to the bigger picture,” Bobby explains. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with the team, they have been really receptive to the new learning, and I’m over the moon to hear they are happy with the training and the impact the training has had.”

As an approved provider of a local training funding initiative, BSA Training was able to help Addooco IT access 50% funding towards the cost of the training.  Bobby explains “We were able to sit down with Paul and understand where they were and where they wanted to be as a business.  We then designed a programme and helped them put together a funding application, demonstrating a strong business case.”

Addooco’s prime Chesterfield location, people development and technical superiority will be key drivers to success moving forwards. It is anticipated that the company will continue to invest in both its technical offering and their people to ensure their clients continue to enjoy a strategic advantage.

Three young people to battle it out for top retail apprentice title

One young person will be named as the town’s top retail apprentice next month at the 2019 Chesterfield Retail Awards.

Three retail apprentices have been shortlisted for the prestigious Apprentice of the Year award, sponsored by Apprentice Town (Led by Chesterfield Borough Council).

Kelly Jaggers, a hairdressing apprentice from Bliss Hair, Nails and Beauty in Hasland, Rebecca McNair, an apprentice beauty therapist from The Therapy Lounge in Hasland and Laura Davies, a design apprentice at JMJ Pottery on Chatsworth Road, are all in the running for the top award.

Kelly, Rebecca and Laura were nominated for the award by their employers. They will be recognised alongside 34 businesses from the town’s retail sector which have been shortlisted across 15 categories in the annual Retail Awards which are organised by Destination Chesterfield.

The winners of all the awards will be announced at Casa Hotel on Wednesday 19 June.

Kelly Jaggers from Bliss Chesterfield

Former Hasland Hall School pupil, Kelly Jaggers initially started her own nail business, however she jumped at the chance to develop herself further when she was offered a hairdressing apprenticeship with Bliss Hair, Nails and Beauty.

Delighted to be shortlisted, Kelly (24) from Hasland said: “I was surprised when I heard I’d been shortlisted for the award. It’s great to have my hard work recognised. I enjoy my job and I love working with the team at Bliss; it really is a lovely environment to work in.”

Kelly hopes to progress onto her NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing after recently completing her Level 2.

Lisa Jackson, the owner of Bliss Hair, Nails and Beauty added: “I am thrilled to see Kelly shortlisted for this award. She is always working hard and she really does have a huge positive impact on the business – I don’t know what we’d do without her!”

Rebecca Mcnair, former Heritage High School pupil, ensures everything runs smoothly at The Therapy Lounge and when she’s not carrying out her own treatments, she’s assisting other therapists. After completing her NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy, Rebecca hopes to move on to NVQ Level 3 in Massage and Reflexology and eventually open her own salon.

Rebecca (19) commented on being shortlisted: “I feel really honoured and excited to be recognised at the start of my career and it has given me a real boost to reach my future goals. It’s fantastic to be working alongside other passionate and experienced therapists, with most of them starting as apprentices too.”

Carly Smith, Salon Owner at The Therapy Lounge added: “Rebecca works harder than most young people I know. She picks things up really easily and has a natural flair for the beauty industry – she’s a great asset to the team.”

Laura Davies (24), who is currently doing an NVQ Level 3 Design Apprenticeship at JMJ Pottery, has a passion for all things creative. The former St Mary’s Catholic High School pupil hopes to one day run her own pottery business.

Laura commented on being a finalist: “It was great to be put forward for this award in the first place and a privilege to be named as a finalist at the Chesterfield Retail Awards. I try to be as helpful and approachable as I can be with customers and I truly enjoy what I do – to have that acknowledged is amazing.”

Janine Mannion-Jones, Owner of JMJ Pottery added: “Laura is a wonderful person who is always willing to work hard and support others. She uses her initiative, which is incredibly important in the work we do, and I am delighted to see her shortlisted for this award.”

Alongside the Apprentice of the Year title, the Chesterfield Retail Awards will also be honouring the town’s Apprentice Employer of the Year, sponsored by Learning Unlimited (The Chesterfield College Group).

Three businesses have been shortlisted for the Apprentice Employer of the Year award – Bliss Hair, Nails and Beauty, Fresh Ideas Florist and The Therapy Lounge.

The apprentice and apprentice employer award categories were introduced to the Retail Awards line-up last year in order to commend the valuable contribution apprentices and apprenticeships make to Chesterfield’s retail scene.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, commented on the importance of the apprentice awards: “Apprentices, and the businesses that employ them, are integral parts of Chesterfield’s success within a number of sectors, including retail. It is great to see so many young people developing their skills through apprenticeships and making the most of the opportunities that Chesterfield businesses can deliver.”

Have your say on proposed new road in Chesterfield

Residents are being invited by Derbyshire County Council to have their say about a proposed new road in Chesterfield.

The road, which is currently being referred to as the Hollis Lane link road, is proposed to link Brewery Street via the station with the A632 at Spa Lane, Hady Hill.

It is part of wider plans by Chesterfield Borough Council to regenerate the area around Chesterfield train station for housing and business use and to improve parking. The proposals are part of the work being carried out jointly by the county and borough councils on how to maximise the benefits of the potential HS2 service which is proposed to serve the town.

Read more about the plans for Chesterfield Station.

If the proposals for the new road go ahead, it would improve access to the station from the south and reduce the level of traffic travelling through the town centre.

The road would be built in two phases. Phase one would include widening the junction of Spa Lane and Hollis Lane and upgrading traffic lights at the junction. This would help to manage the additional traffic. New steps and a ramp would be built to provide access for pedestrians from the underpass and a new cycle route would be created alongside the link road to connect with the existing railway station cycle route.

The second phase would extend the link road north towards the station and through to Brewery Street.

Under the proposals, Lordsmill roundabout and Piccadilly junction would also be improved to help traffic flow better along the A632.

Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Transport and Infrastructure, said:

“Investing in roads is one of our top priorities for ensuring our local economy can thrive and grow.

“The proposed road will open up opportunities for regeneration around the station as well as providing better access to the station and helping to cut congestion on existing roads in the area.”

A public exhibition will be held at Chesterfield Library, New Beetwell Street, Chesterfield, S40 1QN on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 May 2019 so local people can find out more and give their views about the proposals.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions from 2pm to 6pm each day.

You can find out more information about the proposed Hollis Lane link road.

Anyone who is unable to make it to the event but would like to have their say can send their comments to Tom Mather, email: tom.mather@derbyshire.gov.uk by 7 June 2019.

All comments received will be taken into account before a planning application for the first phase of the work is submitted to Derbyshire County Council in the next few months.

There will be a further opportunity to comment as part of the planning process when the planning application is submitted.

MP visits Royal Chesterfield NHS Trust to see how technology is helping to improve patient safety

Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has visited Royal Chesterfield Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to understand more about the key role technology is playing in driving patient safety standards.  The Trust has, in recent years, harnessed and invested in cutting-edge technology to manage medication administration. The automated systems reduce the risk of medication errors and free-up healthcare professionals to spend more time on face-to-face patient care.

At the MP visit, Martin Shepherd, Head of Medicines Management at Chesterfield Hospital NHS Foundation Trust demonstrated the benefit of the Trust’s decision to invest in a series of Omnicell systems which automate the administration of medication.  This new approach allows Trusts to track everything back to the patient from the moment the medication is prescribed to when it is administered – ensuring patient safety.

Toby Perkins MP commented: “It is great to hear the benefits that this service has brought to patient safety and the extent to which it allows more time and space for nurses to dedicate to care. It is a substantial investment that Chesterfield Royal Hospital have made and was ahead of its time when the first machine was installed. I am pleased to learn that there are plans for these to be rolled out right across the hospital over the coming years. The rising costs and demand of medicines are key financial pressures on the NHS and anything that reduces costs, wastage and erroneous dispensary, as this system does, is to be welcomed. The pharmacy department has won awards previously and whilst it may be a less high profile department than some it is crucial to the overall success of the hospital.”

‘Careers Hub’ announced for North Derbyshire

A national initiative to improve careers and educational support for young people, including in some of the UK’s most disadvantaged areas, will establish a ‘Careers Hub’ in North Derbyshire.

This will cover 21 schools in north-east Derbyshire (including ones in Chesterfield and Bolsover), following a successful bid by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership and partners.

Around £80,000 in support will enable D2N2’s Careers Hub (led by the Shirebrook Academy) to bring together schools and colleges together with employers, universities, training providers and career professionals to improve job opportunities for young people, focusing on best practice. Support and funding, a ‘Hub Lead’ to coordinate activity and build networks, a central fund for employer engagement activities, and training for a ‘Careers Leader’ in each school are set to be available from September 2019.

This is one of 18 Hubs have been announced (and two existing ones expanded), backed by a further £2.5million in national investment, delivered via the Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC). The CEC, established in 2015, is a nationally funded body which helps link schools and colleges with employers, to increase employer engagement for young people. It works closely with England’s 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships, including the D2N2 LEP.

The Careers Hubs are based on a pilot scheme by the Gatsby Foundation (which is behind the Gatsby Benchmarks, an internationally recognised ‘checklist’ of what schools and colleges need to do to provide the best careers advice) and the North-East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), run from 2015 to 2017.

Claudia Harris, Chief Executive of the Government-backed Careers & Enterprise Company, said: “Careers education is improving across the country. The accelerated progress we’re seeing in the first wave of Careers Hubs shows that this model is working and delivering for young people, with schools and colleges in this first wave of Careers Hubs already outperforming the national average across all aspects of careers education.

“We are delighted that the Government’s investment is supporting us to roll out this model to a quarter of schools and colleges in the country, helping more young people get the vital support and opportunities they need.”

Carolyn Fairbairn, Director General of the CBI, said: “Employers understand just how important their role is in preparing the next generation for the world of work and their enthusiasm for supporting schools has never been greater. Connecting business and young people is a proven way of improving life chances.”

She added: “Firms can sometimes struggle to engage with the schools and colleges that need their support. It’s therefore hugely encouraging to see more Careers Hubs on the way. There is no doubt they will play a pivotal role in helping employers get more involved.”

Funding for the Careers Hubs initiative is being delivered via the CEC, with funding from the Department for Education.

Exhibition of Chatsworth treasures in New York could boost U.S. visitors to Peak District and Derbyshire

The Peak District and Derbyshire could look forward to a rise in visits from the US as a prestigious exhibition of art and objects from Chatsworth launches at Sotheby’s in New York.

Free of charge and open to the public from 28 June – 18 September 2019, Treasures from Chatsworth: The Exhibition, offers a rare chance to view the legendary Devonshire Collection in the US.

As well as offering a showcase to some of the Derbyshire stately home’s most famous treasures, it is hoped the exhibition will inspire more US tourists to book a trip to the Peak District and Derbyshire – discovering the area’s vibrant cultural scene in the process.

Treasures from Chatsworth will feature over 40 masterworks including fine art, decorative objects, furniture, jewellery, clothing and archival materials from the Devonshire Collection – widely celebrated as one of the most significant art collections in Europe. All objects have been accumulated over 500 years by the Cavendish family, and held at Chatsworth near Bakewell.

Research from VisitBritain shows that the UK’s culture and heritage is a huge draw for overseas visitors – with more than £8 billion spent annually by international tourists who visit castles/historic houses in the UK (based on 2016 figures).

Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board, says the exhibition will help to raise awareness of the area’s rich cultural heritage, which ranges from stately homes such as Chatsworth, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, to a vibrant arts scene and sites of worldwide historical importance, such as the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

The US is the UK’s most valuable inbound visitor market for tourism spend, with US visitors spending a record £3.6 billion across the UK in 2017, up 9% on the previous year. Visits from the US grew 13% to 3.9 million in the same period.

The US also ranked the UK second out of 50 nations for its overall brand in the 2018 Anholt Nation Brands Index, up one place on 2017 and equalling its highest ranking ever.

Tourism’s value to the Peak District and Derbyshire economy was worth £2.15 billion in 2017, supporting 28,630 full-time jobs with 40.45 million visitors travelling to the area in the same period.*

Jo Dilley, Managing Director of Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, said:  “Promoting the Peak District and Derbyshire on a global scale is at the heart of our work, so it is fantastic news that items from Chatsworth’s prestigious Devonshire Collection will be exhibited in New York this summer.

“Boosting visitor numbers and increasing visitor spend is paramount in ensuring that the local economy can reap the benefits of tourism, and the Treasures from Chatsworth exhibition will serve as a great international showcase for the area’s rich cultural heritage.

“Chatsworth is one of the UK’s leading stately homes and we hope the exhibition will inspire more US visitors to add Chatsworth, and the wider Peak District and Derbyshire area, to their must-visit list.’

Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism, Councillor Barry Lewis, said: “Promoting Derbyshire as a global cultural and tourist destination is one of our top priorities and Chatsworth is one of the jewels in Derbyshire’s crown, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to our county each year.

“So we’re thrilled to hear some of the estate’s treasures will be showcased in New York and hope it will whet the appetite of American tourists who will be encouraged to visit Derbyshire and see all our beautiful county has to offer for themselves.”

Gavin Landry, VisitBritain Director of the Americas, said: “It is great to have this exhibition come to the US and shine a spotlight on the cultural draw of the Peak District and Derbyshire, inspiring Americans to travel to Britain.

“Our research shows that many US visitors are motivated to travel to Britain due to our history and heritage and this exhibition is sure to get more Americans to experience the delights of Chatsworth and the surrounding area and extend their stay.”
