University of Derby researchers develop fingerprint technique to help criminal investigations

Researchers at the University of Derby have developed a breakthrough identification technique that helps develop fingermarks after prolonged periods of time.

Up until now, fingerprint techniques used by forensic scientists have always found metal surfaces such as knives and firearms very challenging.

Now, a team of researchers from the University of Derby and the University of Nottingham, have developed an approach that uses Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), which is capable of revealing fingerprint ridge detail that is exceptionally clear and can be analysed up to 26 days after deposition. This raises the possibility of being able to reliably visualise fingerprints on surfaces previously thought to be devoid of such crucial evidence.

Adam Long, Undergraduate Programme Coordinator for Forensic Science at the University of Derby, said: “This revolutionary system is the first of its kind.”

“Fingerprints are incredibly difficult to retrieve from metallic surfaces. This is mainly due to physical and environmental conditions that the prints may be exposed to at the crime scene, the age of the print, as well as how the developing agents react with the surface.”

“A common example of the difficulties investigators face, comes from examining fired bullet casings. The high temperatures, pressure and friction caused when a bullet is fired makes fingerprints extremely fragile and this, combined with other factors, often results in their apparent removal or obliteration. This technique is non-destructive and can be used repeatedly to image fingerprint marks without compromising their quality.”

To conduct the study, researchers took fingermarks from six donors, every day for 14 days. The fingerprints were put on to disks of brass, aluminium and stainless steel and treated simultaneously so the effects of ageing could easily be determined. Using an Ion beam, from the ToF-SIMS technique, the researchers were able to detect and visualise the fingerprint secretions, in order to determine which metal surface was capable of preserving the previously undetected fingerprints.

The results showed that the fingerprints developed using traditional techniques did not work nearly as well, with one showing no results at all after the 14 days, unlike the ToF-SIMS method, which was used repeatedly up to 26 after initial sampling – the first time this has ever been done.

Dr Ian Turner, Associate Professor at the University of Derby said “It is fantastic to see the impact that combining the expertise of leading physicists and forensic scientists has had on developing fingermarks on this challenging surface.”

Dr Ian turner was recently shortlisted for a ‘Most Innovative Teacher of the Year’ award.

This technique is of interest to the East Midland Scientific Operations Unit – Forensic Services who helped develop the conventional marks used in the study.

The full findings, which were conducted by Tshaiya Devi Thandauthapani, Adam Reeve, Adam Long, Dr Ian Turner and Dr James Sharp, can be found here.

Record visitor numbers boost Chesterfield economy

New figures showing a record number of visitors to Chesterfield are providing a £175 million boost to the borough’s economy were announced this morning at the Chesterfield Investment Summit.

The industry figures show that in 2017, Chesterfield received 3.7 million visitors, an increase of 5.1 per cent on 2016. This compares with an average 1.3 per cent increase across the rest of Derbyshire.

The year also saw tourism contribute £175.21 million to the Chesterfield economy, a 6.9 per cent increase on 2016.

As a result, the visitor economy sector also supported 2,165 full-time equivalent jobs in Chesterfield, an increase of 4.8 per cent on 2016. This compares with a 2.5 per cent increase across Derbyshire.

Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “With the Peak District National Park on our doorstep, Chesterfield has long been a convenient place to visit but the fact we see so many people returning to visit us, shows we have a lot to offer in our own right.

“With attractions such as the world-famous Crooked Spire, the traditional open-air market, two theatres offering major shows and plays, Chesterfield Museum, Revolution House and Barrow Hill Roundhouse, it’s no wonder people choose to visit Chesterfield.

“This is great news for our local economy and we will continue to organise regular events to encourage people to visit the borough and, while they are here, take advantage of the many shops, cafés, restaurants and bars we have on offer here.

“I think it is easy to take what you have on your doorstep for granted but when I talk to visitors they are always very complimentary about Chesterfield and what it has to offer. These latest figures back that up and show how important tourism is to our economy.”

Chesterfield Borough Council organises regular events to attract visitors to the borough, such as the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket which brings in cricket fans from across the country. The next event is the 1940s market which takes place in the traditional open-air market place on Thursday 1 November.

“Adios Amigos” – Perez takes Silverstone Double Podium

Chesterfield’s Amigos Team Parker racing driver Seb Perez stormed to victory again last weekend for rounds 13 and 14 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship at Silverstone Race Circuit in Northamptonshire (15/16 September).

The 18 year old racer took to a double Porsche ProAm podium success, winning the second race and taking a third in race one keeping him on top spot and a good position to win the championship with only two races to go at Brands Hatch in two weeks time.

Fridays free practice at the circuit saw Perez and Team mate Nottingham’s George Gamble near top of the sheets.

A great qualifying session on Saturday saw the top ten grid positions separated by just over half a second and although Perez topped the category timesheet for much of the session, he could only salvage third fastest ProAm place within the 30 minute slot.

Race one on Sunday morning saw a mid-pack tussle for the opening lap and as the nose-to-tail group were about to complete the fist lap, Perez and rival Jamie Orton collided sending both spinning to the back of the field.

Despite the collision Perez knew this was going to be a difficult feat from back of the pack but in true fighting style Perez clawed his way through the field of 23 cars and by lap four, he had made his way to 16th place and showing no sign of let up.

His quest for a ProAM podium was on and by lap 18 he had seen off another six rivals holding onto same spot until the chequered flag after 28 laps to take third and a podium place

Perez lined up on row five and 3rd place ProAM racer for race two and as the lights went out his opening lap went better than in race one and by lap two he was in second place. Like a cat after a mouse Perez knew he needed to hunt the leader down and by lap three Super Seb had taken control of the race saying “Adios Amigos” to the rest of the pack

It wouldn’t be easy to retain however as title challenger Dan Vaughan was closing in and Perez would have to work hard to keep his ProAm lead. A tense handful of laps followed as the two tussled, confounded further when Pro runner Will Bratt made contact with Perez on lap 13.

Vaughan closed up once again, but Perez kept his nerve having to slow down having a puncture to take the chequered flag and another ProAm victory taking a fastest lap of the race too.

A jubilant Perez climbed out of the Porsche and said

“That feels great to add yet another victory to the CV and in a relatively straightforward race too,”

He added at the podium,

“I got a little held up behind Will (Bratt) which meant I was being forced back into the clutches of Dan (Vaughan) which was less than ideal and kept it closer than I’d like, otherwise I should have been well up the road. We have had some good pace this weekend as well which is a real confidence boost, although that puncture over the finish line meant it’s been a long run back to the podium to get the trophy.

“This win has certainly been vital to my championship hopes and it’s just so close at the top (of the championship standings) at the moment, every point counts. Let’s hope we can seal the deal at Brands”.

Team mate George Gamble retired on lap 26 with a puncture.

Perez leaves Silverstone leading the ProAm category by seven points , and second in the Rookie standings. Amigos Team Parker Racing are second in the Entrant Championship going into the last meeting at Brands Hatch on 29 -30 September.

You can follow Perez live and all the action on ITV4 as a support race to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

To date, the RISE initiative has helped over 300 businesses to fill over 400 graduate vacancies, from Manufacturing to Marketing. A recent survey of RISE businesses showed that businesses benefit in many ways by taking on a graduate and believe that hiring a graduate helped their business grow.

“RISE worked really well for us. We wouldn’t have had the resources to interview the number of initial applicants ourselves.” Riverside Automation

A spokesperson from Sheffield Sustainable Kitchens said: “The RISE scheme was a breath of fresh air and I learnt a lot about recruitment. All the information was there if we needed it, but wasn’t forced on us if we didn’t.”

Local organisations that have been involved in the project to date include Chesterfield Champions Casa HotelGlobal Brands, Roaring MouseMSE Hiller, and BHP Chartered Accountants.

There is no cost to use RISE except the graduate’s salary and employers NI. Plus, businesses signing up to the scheme for the first time will receive a £1000 subsidy.

Experience life on the Western Front at Chesterfield Museum

Visitors to Chesterfield Museum this autumn can experience what life was like for soldiers on the Western Front during the First World War.

Part of the art gallery at the museum, owned and run by Chesterfield Borough Council, will be transformed into a section of a trench like those on the Western Front in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918.

The trench experience will run from Friday 12 October to Saturday 19 January and has been made possible thanks to £1,500 in funding from Museum Development East Midlands and Arts Council England.

Councillor Steve Brunt, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This autumn is a special moment in our history marking 100 years since the anniversary of the end of the First World War.

“We came up with the idea of The Trench Experience to give people an insight into what life in a trench would have been like.

“Sights and smells are included to give visitors a good idea of a soldier’s life during the conflict.

“The exhibition also has a local focus on Chesterfield soldiers and visitors will hear extracts from their letters.”

Time to apply for secondary school places

Parents of year 6 pupils living in Derbyshire can now apply to us for their child’s secondary school place for September 2019.

Around 8,900 year 6 primary school children – who were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 – have been sent information on the application process.

The deadline to submit applications is at midnight on Wednesday 31 October 2018.Applying online is the easiest method and can be done here.

Applying online is quicker and allows parents to make changes to their application at any point up to the closing date. Anyone who applies online will receive an email to confirm their application has been received. To find out other ways to submit, please click the link above.

When completing the application form parents will be asked to list, in order of preference, the 3 schools they would most like their child to go to.Although parents have a legal right to express preferences they have no automatic right to a place at any particular school.

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered until places have been allocated to those children whose parents did return their form on time.

Parents who fail to meet the deadline may find that the school they want their child to go to is full.

Our Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said:

“As the new school term begins, the time has come for parents with children in year 6 to apply for their child’s secondary school place for September 2019.

“It’s really quick and easy to apply – especially if parents do it online and we have a dedicated team on hand to help parents with the application process.

“Picking the right school is a big decision so we’re asking parents to take their time to explore all of their options and send in their application before the deadline on Wednesday 31 October.”

Councillor Dale added:

“Missing the deadline could mean parents are less likely to get a place at their preferred school and could mean their child may have to travel further to an alternative school or not get into the same school as their friends.”

Any parents who are a refused a place for their child have a right of appeal to an independent panel.
