Ticket offer for Trust’s partners schools

A special offer from the Chesterfield FC Community Trust will see children at their partner schools receive free tickets for next month’s game against Shrewsbury Town.

Also, any adult who accompanies a child from a partner school to the game on Saturday, March 11 can purchase a ticket for just £10.

To boost the atmosphere, the Trust has arranged for 8,000 blue and white cards to be handed out before the game, with fans encouraged to hold the cards up as the players come out of the tunnel before kick-off. The cards are being printed by Print Digital Media, who have produced all of the Trust’s leaflets, booklets and posters as their official print partner.

All kids who attend the forthcoming Spireites Soccer School will also receive a free ticket for the Shrewsbury match with a paying adult.

John Croot, Chief Executive of the Community Trust, said:-

“We organise various ticket offers throughout the season and this is just one of the benefits of being a partner school. We also arrange for players to visit partner schools. I would urge anyone who is interested in their school becoming a partner of the Trust to get in touch with us to find out more.

“I’d like to thank Print Digital Media for kindly agreeing to provide the blue and white cards. We are also grateful to Lifehouse Church for agreeing to support us on the day by providing a team of volunteers.”

Take a Wild West Adventure at Chatsworth this February Half Term

Children will be transported to a Wild West themed adventure at Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground this half term, with a variety of rootin’ tootin’ activities on offer for young explorers.

It will also be the first chance to use the new Bird Hide which looks out from the paddock to specially created naturalistic feeding areas in Stand Wood. Designed by local architects and built by local craftsman, it will also include interpretation boards to help visitors identify the birds. Over the last year, farmyard staff have been feeding wild birds to attract them to the area, with 18 species identified so far, including pheasants.

The bravest cowboys and cowgirls will be able to venture through Tin Can Alley and get up close with some famous Wild West critters including snakes and spiders, before hopping on a trailer ride through the park. Subject to weather conditions, the trailer ride will operate between 11am and 3pm every day.

After taking on the creatures and bandits of the Wild Wild West, children will be able to let off steam in the adventure playground and explore the farmyard to meet ponies, lambs and piglets among all the farmyard favourites.

When it’s time to head back to the saloon, there will be hot food and drinks available for purchase in the cafe on site; or take advantage of the dedicated picnic room.

Ashgate Hospicecare win award for best ‘Healing or Learning Gardens’

Chris Parsons of Hallam Garden Design picked up the award for best ‘Healing or Learning Gardens’ at this year’s Society of Garden Designers awards for her design and implementation of Ashgate Hospicecare’s gardens.

The award ceremony, which took place at The Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, London, hosted a number of prestigious gardeners who were recognised for their knowledge and contribution to the landscape and garden design profession.

Chris Parsons said:-

“I am in utter shock of being the winner in the category ‘Healing or Learning Gardens’ for our gardens at Ashgate Hospicecare. There were a lot of high profile designers in our category who I respect greatly, so to be chosen over them really was amazing. It’s our version of winning Olympic gold. For a real garden there really is no higher accolade than this one.”

Lucy Nickson, Chief Executive of Ashgate Hospicecare, said:-

“A huge congratulations to Chris Parsons for winning the award for best ‘Healing Gardens’. The design and layout of the hospice’s gardens are simply beautiful and bring so much joy to patients and their families, staff and volunteers.

“The project to redesign and improve the gardens started a number of years ago but it is only now that we are seeing the full benefits as the garden starts to fully mature. We hope the gardens will get more beautiful year on year and are just so pleased that we have this wonderful space for patients, families, staff, volunteers and all visitors to enjoy.”

Chesterfield’s goal: time to talk about mental health

Chesterfield FC visited the Hartington Unit with one goal in mind: time to talk about mental health.

“Will my mental health conditions stop me from playing football?” was the question on one patient’s lips as Chesterfield Football Club players and staff visited the Hartington Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital on Thursday to play their part in Time to Talk Day – a national movement to get the country talking about mental health for 24 hours.

Player/coach and chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Ritchie Humphreys was joined by teenage striker Ricky German and winger Derek Daly for a guided tour around the gym and recreational activities hub of the unit, run by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The visit was organised by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust, who have done a lot of work to develop opportunities for people experiencing poor mental health.

In the spirit of Time to Talk Day, the players spent time chatting with patients and staff about life as a professional footballer on and off the pitch and the importance of speaking openly about our emotional wellbeing. Humphreys, German and Daly were also on hand to sign autographs and pose for photographs.

Over a game of pool and table tennis with the players, one patient concerned about how his mental health might affect his future asked:-

“From a young age I’ve always loved football and have dreamt of playing for a professional club one day. Will my mental health conditions stop me from playing football?”

To his delight, the players reassured him that the impacts of poor mental health are well-recognised in English football today, so much so that there is a wealth of emotional ’round-the-clock’ support and counselling available to past and present players through the PFA.

The annual anti-stigma campaign’s goal is to raise awareness that anyone can be affected by poor mental health and that by being open to mental health can break down any stigma surrounding it. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year and footballers are now immune to this.

Clare Farnsworth, Recreation Co-ordinator for Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and organiser of the visit, said:-

“It’s been absolutely fantastic to have the players here. Patients have said to me they can’t believe they’ve just had a game of pool with a footballer. There were smiles all around.”

Commenting on the visit, Humphreys, who also acts as ambassador for mental health at Chesterfield FC, said:-

“For us to raise the awareness around our local community is important to us. It was great for us to see the tremendous facilities on offer, as well as meet some of the patients and interact with them.”

Time to Talk Day has previously attracted backing from many top footballers and household names such as Clarke Carlisle, Kelly Smith, Freddie Flintoff and Stephen Fry – and most recently by Prince Harry, who reportedly regrets not opening up sooner about the death of his mother Princess Diana.

Employers to help shape skills growth across Derbyshire

An employer-led board aims to inspire local employers to boost employment and skills opportunities for young people in Derby and Derbyshire.

The D2 Skills & Employment Board (D2 SEB) bridges the gap between the private sector and those delivering the local skills agenda. Set up by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and supported by both Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council, the Board aims to ensure there is appropriate employer ownership and leadership to steer opportunities for local young people. The D2 SEB also works closely with local partnerships to ensure employment and skills activity contributes to local economic growth ambitions.

The Board is chaired by Graham Mullholland from epm: technology group and involves employers from a range of private sector businesses including: Pentaxia, Katapult, Advanced Roofing, One to One Support Services, Toyota, Greenbank Group UK, The Derby Conference Centre, Yews Residential, Bowmer & Kirkland, Federal-Mogul Motorparts, Jurys Inn (East Midlands Airport), Holiday Inn Derby- Riverlights, Signal House Group Ltd, Fairgrove Homes, Brighter Directions and the Arkwright Society. There are also key representative bodies that sit on the board including the city and county councils, DWP, Federation of Small Businesses, East Midlands Chamber, Destination Chesterfield and First Steps.

Graham Mulholland, CEO of epm: technology group, said:-

“It is important that the business community has a voice in shaping the skills agenda, and although the D2 SEB has taken time to form and mature, it is now in a great position to move forward. Our annual report reflects this and business leaders should now be confident to join in and have a voice.”

D2 SEB will focus on four priority sectors; Engineering, Construction, Health & Social Care and Visitor Economy, with an equal focus on Work Readiness.

Councillor Sarah Russell, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills at Derby City Council, said:-

“We’re passionate about improving opportunities for young people in the city to gain new skills and have more employment opportunities. It’s fantastic to have the Derby & Derbyshire Skills and Employment Board so employers are directly involved and pushing this agenda forward.”

An Annual Report has been published for 2015/16 which provides a detailed account of all the key activities achieved in the past year and what the priorities are for the next year.

Councillor Anne Western, Leader of Derbyshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Strategic Policy, Economic Development and Budget, said:-

“The job market is changing all the time so it’s a vital part of our work to make sure our young people are equipped with the most relevant skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Our young people are the ones that will shape the future so it’s important we give them the best opportunities. By working closely with our partners in the Derbyshire Economic Partnership we’ll be to learn from each other about how best to support young people, businesses and local communities.”

Ex-Spires walking football team on TV

Walking football, which was the brain-child of the Chesterfield FC Community Trust, will feature on ITV’s Tonight show this week.

The Ex-Spires walking football team will be shown on Thursday in The Truth About Exercise: Tonight.

Presenter Fiona Foster attended an Ex-Spires session at The Akademy in Dronfield and spoke to some of the players. Among them was 78-year-old Eric Bagshaw, who took up walking football six years ago after being diagnosed with diabetes.

Eric talked on camera about the marked improvement in his health since he has been playing walking football. He said:-

“I could feel myself getting stronger each week, and I just kept working at it, just loved it,” he said.

Taking up the story of when he faced a medical examination, Eric adds:-

“Doctor came down and he says, ‘Now then Eric, what you been doing this last six months’?

“So I said, ‘I’ve joined an exercise club, football’. He says, ‘Brilliant, because what that’s done for you is fantastic. Your diabetes has gone, your blood pressure’s normal, your kidneys, your liver, your heart’s perfect. You’ve got the body of a 40-year-old man’. Those were his exact words.”

John Croot, Chief of the Community Trust, came up with the idea of walking football after the Trust received funding from the Football Foundation for a project called ‘Extra Time’. He explained:-

“It was around 2010/2011 when I went to a presentation before we put the bid in and one of the things said was to look for unusual activities which would be ideal for older people.

“The requirement was for something which would have low injury risk, cardio vascular benefits and help develop friendship groups. Coming back I was going through what had been talked about and I thought, ‘Why don’t we play football, but walk it’?

“I’m proud that walking football started here in Chesterfield and it’s great to see that it’s really taken off. As a measure of the interest in it world-wide, I’ve been interviewed about walking football by TV crews from Japan, Holland, Germany and France.”

The Truth About Exercise: Tonight is on Thursday, February 9, from 7.30pm to 8pm.

Investment in Innovation

Businesses are benefiting from upgraded internet and phone systems at Chesterfield Borough Council’s two innovation centres.

Following IT upgrades tenants at Tapton Park and Dunston Innovation Centres now receive:

  • 1GB high speed digital connectivity, boosting their ability to sell and promote their products and services online
  • A state-of-the-art Mitel telephone system which enables tenants to work in agile ways, taking calls when away from the centres. All call charges are part of the managed services provided at the centres.

Councillor Tricia Gilby,  Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, said:-

“A thriving local economy is our key priority. The provision of state-of-the-art facilities to encourage new business ventures as well as supporting more established businesses is essential to achieving that objective.”

Councillor Mick Wall, Chair of the Chesterfield Innovation Centres Management Board said:-

“Our innovation centres, supported by a team of excellent staff, provide a superb environment for businesses to grow and expand, providing valuable, high skilled jobs for local people.”

Hundreds of companies have used the centres over the years to successfully grow their businesses and feedback about the improvements is very positive:

Ian Ford, of First B2B said:-

“Coming to Tapton Park was one of the best decisions we have made and with the initiative of bringing in very high speed fibre and telephony we would struggle to find a better solution to our accommodation requirements anywhere else in the area.”

Matthew Brailsford, of Custom Solar, said:-

“Having vision for the future is why I love having my business at the Dunston Innovation Centre. With renewable energy, super fast broadband and affordable offices I cannot think of a better space close to Chesterfield.

“Along with fantastic centre staff who support local apprenticeships and innovative businesses I feel very much at home.”

Various office sizes are available at each centre and range from a virtual office or furnished rent a desk suite to offices from 202 sq ft to 1,500 sq ft.

Leases can be put in place quickly and have flexible easy in-easy out terms to encourage take-up. This allows businesses to be operational within a minimum time period and adjust quickly to their changing accommodation requirements as they develop.

Other key features include telephone, admin, post and reception support, a free on-site business advisor offering access to specialist innovation support and access at discounted rates to the conference and meeting rooms in both centres.

While the centres have high occupancy levels offices continuously become available as start-up businesses expand and move to bigger premises in the town.
