Bringing empty homes back into use

Plans to bring empty homes back into use in Chesterfield have been adopted by Chesterfield Borough Council.

The council’s cabinet has approved the Private Sector Empty Homes Strategy 2016-2020, which outlines how the council aims to bring empty properties back into use.

There are currently 490 empty properties in Chesterfield with approximately 1,500 applications currently on the council’s housing waiting list.

Bringing these homes back into use will give opportunities for people currently on the waiting list to buy or rent their own homes.

It will also allow the council to receive funding from the Government through the New Homes Bonus and receive Council Tax income when the properties are occupied.

The council would always prefer to work informally with property owners to bring empty homes back into use; however, where these negotiations prove unsuccessful, the new strategy means the council can now consider measures such as compulsory purchase or enforced sale of the property in order to return the property back to use.

These interventions will only be considered where all other intervention has proved unsuccessful.

Councillor Tom Murphy, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for housing, said:-

“Empty homes are bad news for neighbours who often have to put up with vandalism and anti-social behaviour and can see value of their own property decrease.

“Leaving properties empty can also see a significant reduction in funds for the council, which can be used to improve the services we offer to our residents so it makes sense for everyone that we put plans in place to tackle the problem and bring these homes back into use.”

The new strategy takes into account changes in the housing market in Chesterfield over recent years.

Judges visit blooming marvellous Chesterfield

Chesterfield played host to judges from the East Midlands in Bloom committee to judge the borough’s entry into the regional competition.

Chesterfield in Bloom is a community project, led by volunteers working with Chesterfield Borough Council to make continual improvements to the borough’s environment.

As part of the tour on Friday 15 July, the judges visited some of Chesterfield’s parks and green spaces, including the Green Flag award winning parks at Queen’s Park, Eastwood Park and the grounds of Chesterfield and District Crematorium.

They also met volunteers and residents who have entered the Chesterfield in Bloom ‘Best Kept Garden’ competition.

Peter Benham, East Midlands in Bloom judge, said:-

“I’ve been in Chesterfield three times judging and this time and I pleased to say that there is a nice Bloom committee and it’s great that the community is working together to help improve the look of Chesterfield.”

Chesterfield won a silver-gilt award in last year’s East Midlands in Bloom competition.

The results of this year’s awards will be announced in September.

Chesterfield residents urged to recycle household electricals

People in the Chesterfield area are being urged to give their unwanted household electricals a new lease of life for a chance to win ÂŁ50.

Everyone who brings an appliance to Derbyshire County Council’s Bright Sparks re-use and recycling event will get the chance to enter into a prize draw to win shopping vouchers. The event run in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council will take place on Sunday 24 July at Morrisons, Staveley. For more about the event click here.

Councillor Dean Collins, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said:-

“We ran one of these events in Hasland last year and it was very successful. More than 200 items of electrical equipment were brought to the event for re-use or recycling.

“Dealing with waste which residents put in their non-recycling bin costs us £20 million per year at a time when we’re getting less money from central Government to run council services. So it’s increasingly important that we recycle as much as we possibly can and all the electricals we collect at our Bright Sparks event will be put to good use.”

Councillor Chris Ludlow, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said:-

“We are always keen to work in partnership with the county council to support events like this because they help to get out the message about the importance of recycling.

“Recycling makes sense from an environmental point of view but for tax payers there is also a financial incentive for doing it because it helps keep council tax rates lower if less money is wasted on paying landfill tax charges to dispose of waste that could be recycled instead.”

Chesterfield borough residents can also now recycle small electrical items such as irons, mobile phones and hairdryers by placing them on top of the lid of their blue bin on collection day. Personal data from items such as phones, laptops and sat navs should be removed first.
