New design studio for Chesterfield packaging manufacturer

Chesterfield-based manufacturer, Robinson has invested in a new state-of-the-art design studio.

The CAD design room is run by a team with more than 50 years’ experience in packaging creation. It includes a DYSS X5 machine for sample making technology, a Sumbel desktop gluer and can produce production standard products and samples in small runs.

The specialist design team have the capabilities and knowledge to design premium packaging to meet key sustainability credentials, both internally and for customers with a 24-hour turnaround time for samples.

Robinson is often thinking of creative ways to use packaging – this recently includes experimenting with hybrid packaging. Careful thought goes into the packaging to ensure it maintains a level of premium feel whilst also being suitable and secure for the products in them, for example luxury glass candles and cakes.

Elouise Boam, New Product Development and Quality Manager is delighted with the new facility. She says: “From a customer’s existing brief or free licence to create, we design and produce packaging in our purpose-built studio, using the latest Kasemake software, DYSS X5 sample table and Sumbel Bench top gluing unit to produce production standard samples, prototypes and small to medium production runs.

“We can turn around a brief in 24 hours, and work with industry leading suppliers of print, print finishing, paper, and board to create beautiful packaging.

“We carry out product and transit testing to ensure the quality and integrity of the finished pack meets the customers’ requirements and exceeds expectations.

“Paper based inserts and supports are our speciality with sustainability, re use and cost-effective solutions at the forefront of our creative design ideas.

With 50 years combined experience of design and technical knowledge we create bespoke packaging solutions from Rigid Board, Carton board or a combination of any paper-based material imaginable”.

Robinson were recently awarded FSC ® certification (Licence code: FSC-C186000) for its Paperbox division.

FSC certification ensures that all products produced at Paperbox are sustainable. FSC-managed forests help provide clean air and water by restricting hazardous chemicals and following strict harvesting and forestry practices. Their work also helps ensure a diversity of animals, trees and plants as well as providing safe working conditions for everyone involved.

This further demonstrates the investment that the company is making in its Paperbox business, following a significant investment in its new SATE box-making machine in Chesterfield, with improved quality and a reduced carbon footprint that allows customers to avoid long, complex supply chains from Asia.

Eleven learners from Chesterfield’s White Rose Beauty College through to the national final of World Skills competition

Learners at Chesterfield’s White Rose Beauty College have been announced as finalists for the 2023 UK World Skills event.

The learners will compete across various speciality categories, including the Beauty Therapist, Creative Media Makeup and Nail Technician competitions. The competitions are designed by industry experts to help young people grow personally and professionally, by developing their technical and employability skills.

They focus on upskilling and developing young people, aged 25 and under, from all backgrounds and abilities. After their success at the regional heats which took place earlier this year, the learners will now undergo further training and development from September to October 2023 before competing in the National Finals in November.

Using international best practice to raise standards in apprenticeships and technical education, the competitions aim to support under 25s across the world via competitions-based training, assessment, and benchmarking, to succeed.  The national finals will ultimately test learners ability to achieve world-class standards in the Skills Olympics which takes place every two years.

Learners including, Harriet Dolphin, Bobbi Stobbs, Eva Henderson, Ellie Whittaker, Amelia Fox, Kelsey Lawler and Phoebe Botham will put their skills and knowledge to the ultimate test as they battle to win these prestigious competitions in their field.

This is a fantastic achievement for these learners, and White Rose Beauty Colleges, who are a subsidiary of Learning Curve Group and deliver funded training courses in a host of beauty related disciplines, supporting people to upskill and reskill to develop or start their careers in the industry.

White Rose Beauty Colleges have nine academies across Yorkshire and the North West, taking Learning Curve Groups total to 17 hair and beauty academies across the UK. This news comes just two weeks after two of Learning Curve Groups Hair and Beauty learners were announced as finalists in the national VTCT Awards for Student of the Year.

A Chesterfield business owner has been included in a prestigious list of entreprenuers, which celebrates the UK’s fastest-growing companies.

Rob Carlin, Managing Director at Superior Wellness has been included in the 2023 E2E International 100 list in association with The Independent and in partnership with IWG as the strategic founding partner.

The list, which was independently verified by data from Experian and Go Live Data, celebrates the UK’s fastest-growing international companies according to their export turnover over the past two years along with a minimum annual turnover of £10 million.

Celebrating international entrepreneurs and founders across a host of sectors, the E2E International 100 is a significant initiative designed to showcase the very best UK companies that are excelling, experiencing consistent growth and presenting disruptive business strategies, creating an impact not just in their own sector, but also on a nationwide and in some cases a global scale.

Chesterfield manufacturer installs new robotic manufacturing plating plant

Engineering supply chain solution provider CBE+ has built the first 6+1 robotic Electroless Nickel Plating (ENP) line in the UK and Europe at its 70,000ft² state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

This new manufacturing capability will allow the company to undertake a range of innovative projects at its Chesterfield base, including the processing of small, precision-engineered components in high volumes and the ability to deliver high-quality parts at a consistently high standard.

The automated line from Sidasa Engineering will also facilitate a highly repeatable surface treatment process, reducing the time taken to complete and send large orders to customers and significantly increasing CBE+’s Electroless Nickel production capacity, utilising a FANUC robot system.

Chief executive officer, Marie Cooper, says: “This is a significant investment for CBE+ and one that will bring many benefits to the business and our customers. The new plating line reduces the scope for human error by automating dosing control and deposition monitoring and measuring. This results in a consistently high-quality finish on the products we process. Automating these tasks means we can redeploy skilled employees to projects that require higher levels of expertise.”

This is the latest of significant investment in the business. A sum of £4m has been invested over the last few years including a new Wire EDM line in 2021 and merger with Nitec UK at the back end of 2022. The firm has double its turnover during this period, with future growth to £10m forecasted over the next few years.

This investment contributes to CBE+’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The new nickel-plating line will be linked with the newly commissioned effluent water treatment plant and combined heat and power (CHP) system. The CHP system captures heat generated as a by-product of electrical power generation which is then used to provide heat energy for the surface treatment processes. The effluent plant filters and neutralises all waste chemistry on-site and allows for environmentally safe disposal and recycling.

The new line is currently being tested with plans to be fully operational this June.

The company recently opened its doors to the public, hosting an open day on the 26th April. More than 60 people from the manufacturing and engineering sectors attended the event which featured a tour of the entire facility including the new plating line.

World Environment Day 2023 – How are Chesterfield businesses helping to combat climate change?

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day (5th June 2023), we’ve been finding out how Chesterfield Champions are helping to reduce their carbon footprint, to support the town’s net-zero targets.

Chesterfield understands it has a long journey ahead. But our businesses appreciate the level of commitment needed to achieve our long-term goals and agree on the value of our collective change.

Every improvement we make benefits the health of our people and our environment, and strengthens our local economy.

Chesterfield Borough Council recently set out the groundwork for the borough to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, by adopting a new climate change strategy.

The new strategy is based on six central themes, focusing on where the council can have the biggest impact. These themes influence the further reduction of Chesterfield Borough Council’s own emissions*, while supporting others to do the same.

“Two years ago, we invested in an electric cargo bike and trailer for local deliveries. In some cases when the weather is awful, we use an electric plugin car. Additionally, all our hamper and gift packaging is reusable and biodegradable.”

“As a law firm that used to rely heavily on paper, Banner Jones has made huge improvements over the last 2 years. Most of our departments are now classed as ‘paper light’.

“Consequently, most client communications are now done via email and via a secure online portal. In addition, it benefits the speeding up of transactions for the client, as they are no longer waiting for letters to arrive in the post.

“We have also had recycling bins in our offices for several years, helping to reduce general waste.”

Believing that we have a responsibility to care for the planet, our directors have also invested in electronic equipment to reduce paper usage when signing documents. By making these changes, Rosewood hopes to contribute towards a brighter, greener future.”

“Our Electric project journey began in 2019 and has now extended to hydrogen. We have set an ambitious target to become a Net Zero business by 2025, with a fully electric and now hydrogen fleet.

“As part of this, we are also working on a charging infrastructure project to host a range of electric charging hubs across various sites. This is to support the local community and our drivers, as people make the transition to Electric.

“We have also trialed three hydrogen cars in partnership with Peak Resort and Toyota. The partnership is working hard to increase the number of cars on the road with a vision of taking emissions out of the environment.”

“All our company vehicles in the next few months will be hybrid. “At Belvedere House we take being as sustainable as possible incredibly seriously. We have energy-saving champions at all our homes, who work hard to promote and maintain ways of working to reduce the amount of energy used.

“We’re keen to reduce our energy use and take weekly meter readings so we can monitor our changes. We try and recruit people within the local area so they are able to walk or cycle to work. In addition, we are looking into investing in an electric car charging point.

“We use recycled paper throughout the home. Our talented chefs work hard to ensure all food waste is kept to a minimum, and work closely with our food supplier regarding eco-friendly packaging as well as returning all used cooking oil to be recycled.”

“Chargers are now installed at our head office to encourage our staff to switch to hybrid and electric vehicles. We have also recently invested in Solar Panels on our office roof to become more energy efficient.”

“As a business, we are focused on sustainability and with innovation being one of our brand values. Every time we innovate we think about the environment and what we can do to be more sustainable.

“In our warehouse, we have installed solar panels, have electric forklifts and have reviewed our waste strategy. We also have a couple of charging points for vehicles and over the next few years this number will increase.

“Our latest sustainability initiative was to replace all bulbs with LEDs. This has saved 67% in energy costs which have increased significantly recently.”

Chesterfield photo and video specialist expands offer for businesses

A Chesterfield photo and video media specialist is expanding his company’s offer to businesses, offering promotion and induction videos to firms.

Frank Fell, owner of Frank Fell Media is looking to help companies showcase their services through the medium of high quality video, supporting them through the entire process from script writing, filming, editing, colour grading, voice overs and delivery of final production.

Induction videos are a helpful tool in getting a messages over in a constant and effective way for a business, while freeing up time for staff involved.

Frank explained how the idea to offer the new service came about: “My background is in engineering and, before becoming a full time videographer and photographer in the travel industry.

“I was employed by Metalbox, at their nearby Sutton-in-Ashfield Plant. The pandemic prevented me from travelling for a couple of years and the company was looking for a video to make their induction process easier, more effective and more concise. They gave me my first opportunity to produce a number of ‘Production and Induction Videos’ at their Sutton Plant and later at their Wisbech Plant.”

Now, Frank is aiming to focus closer to home, as part of his efforts to assist local businesses with their marketing projects: “Chesterfield is my home town. I went to college here and worked in engineering at Dema Glass for over 10 years, so I have an affinity with the place and people.

“To learn about and help promote other businesses by means of video content is very interesting and rewarding. I really enjoy creating content, that becomes the final product, like a moving jigsaw puzzle.”

Frank also believes that as technology improves, services provided by the creative and digital sector will continue to increase in significance: “I believe the local creative and digital sector can have a massive role to play in the overall economy of the town, in an age where quality video production has never been more important.

“Local is the important word here. Being local means that business relations are much easier than dealing with bigger nationwide production companies. My emphasis is developing a product that the customer is highly satisfied with before signing off and continued service through developing ideas or updating videos when necessary.”

Chesterfield-made fruit liqueur products to be featured on ITV’s Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh

A Chesterfield drinks producer is set to showcase some of the town’s fabulous local produce on TV’s Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh.

Hogg Norton’s gooseberry liqueur will be featured on the ITV 1 show, which will be aired on Sunday, 4th June. The product is made by the company here in Chesterfield, amongst a wide range of tasty fruit liqueurs.

All of the Gooseberries used in the product are grown in Chesterfield around the Holymoorside area.

Michael Norton, Co-Founder of Hogg Norton said: “It is amazing to see our products on the TV. It showcases what we produce, especially as it is all from Chesterfield and also the quality of our products as well.

“This is the second time with Andy and Alan on Love Your Weekend, as the Cherry flavour was on the show last year. We have also previously featured in the Great British Menu with our Sloe and Rhubarb liqueur too.

Michael added that he is proud to be putting Chesterfield on the map with his products: “What we produce in Chesterfield, and the fact that nearly all the fruit we use is from Chesterfield really gives that local link, which to us is very important. I feel makes us stand out in the industry.

“We have also been showcased previously by winning eight Great Taste Awards and two Great British Food awards, which is also testament to the quality of our liqueurs.

“Buying local is so important to any local producer. The passion and quality that goes into our products, and the fact that it is made locally with local ingredients really is something to be proud of. For locals to buy something which is from their area makes it that extra bit special.”

Chair’s Blog: “There has never been a better time to support our town”

Summer is just around the corner, and it’s that time of year when people begin to plan their holidays. In 2023, however, you won’t need to look very far for all the fun and entertainment you could possibly want.

With an abundance of events coming to Chesterfield to match all tastes, there has never been a better time to support our town and help showcase what an excellent visitor destination we have.

This summer, we will see the return of firm favourites such as the BRM Solicitors Festival of Cricket, with the crunch fixture between Derbyshire and Yorkshire set to pack out the beautiful Queen’s Park once again. Thousands will flock to Chesterfield Pride, which is one of the largest events of its type in the entire region. Furthermore, our marketplace will welcome families from all over the country as the Medieval Fun Day returns in July.

We’re not stopping there though. A multitude of new events are coming to the town this year. The world-renowned Peddler Market will appear in our town for the first time – a real achievement for Chesterfield and a sign of the confidence in our area’s strong visitor offer.

Junction Arts will launch The Chesterfield Children’s Festival in Queen’s Park too, attracting families for a great weekend of outdoor fun this July.

Destination Chesterfield is again launching its Summer in Chesterfield campaign this month, aiming to highlight all these magnificent events and activities.

On top of that, we’re continuing to champion our increasingly popular independent food and drink offer. When you go into town or along the famous ‘Brampton Mile’ nowadays, you’ll find many of our wonderful pubs, bars and restaurants – full to the brim. Proof that you don’t need to travel to a city for a great evening out.

Everyone needs to continue supporting and championing local where we can. In a world of online shopping, there is no doubt that our high streets are changing. We must continue backing our independent shops, bars, restaurants and markets.

Whilst it’s understandable that people are having to be more prudent due to the cost of living, I’m delighted to report that you needn’t go on an expensive holiday abroad to have fun. We can create memories to last a lifetime right here, in our beautiful market town, surrounded by the stunning backdrop of the world-famous Peak District.

I look forward to seeing you at one of our town’s many exciting events this summer. Hopefully, we’ll get a nice dose of sunshine to go with them too!

Create memories to last a lifetime this summer in Chesterfield

Make memories in Chesterfield this summer – with a packed events line up, including new family festivals, the return of some old favourites and lots of activities that everyone can take part in.

Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield have today launched Summer in Chesterfield, a campaign that will highlight all the fantastic things happening across the town this summer.

The campaign will support the town’s businesses by promoting what is happening in and around Chesterfield on social media, via website content and e-newsletters to communicate to as many residents, visitors and business owners as possible. There will also be prizes to win throughout the summer.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Town Centres and Visitor Economy said: “Chesterfield has so much to offer, that it’s easy to plan fun things to do to make memories with your friends and families. We’ve got some great ticketed events which are new to Chesterfield but also the return of some familiar favourites. But we’ll also be promoting some great free activities and events to help ensure everyone can make memories together this summer.

“We have fantastic parks, lots of places to picnic, markets to wander around and a range of events many of which have no cost attached at all. The popular Medieval Fun Day will include a range of entertainment around the town, and many people return year after year to attend this.”

Summer in Chesterfield events

Chesterfield is welcoming back popular events, but there are also some new events to make memories at this summer.

The BRM Solicitors Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, will return to Queen’s Park from 11 – 18 June, with the T20 game on Sunday 18 June expected to sell out once again.

Chesterfield Canal Festival will see all four tripboats in action over the weekend of 24 – 25 June, with two having wheelchair lifts, as well as concerts in the evening canoeing, mini diggers and more.

The Plastic Free Festival returns on Sunday 16 July, where you can learn how to reduce your single use plastic and have a fun family day out with craft workshops, kids entertainment, food, drink, and live performances.

Indulge in street food as well as enjoying live music and bubble magicians at the free two-day Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival which takes place in Queen’s Park from 22- 23 July.

One of the biggest pride festivals in the region, Chesterfield Pride will take place in Stand Road Park once again on 23 July, featuring headline acts A1 and Tinchy Stryder.

The popular Medieval Fun Day is returning to entertain the crowds on Tuesday 25 July, from 10am to 4pm in Chesterfield town centre. The Market Place will be full of stalls selling a range of goods as well as fun and games for children in the same location. Head to the medieval encampment in the grounds of the Crooked Spire Church to see knights in battle or look out for the medieval themed entertainment, including Epico the Dragon, a jester and a Tudor musician, across the town centre.

Celebrate imagination and play at the Children’s Festival, organised by Junction Arts from 29 – 30 July with entertainment to include a circus, story time yoga, silent disco and much more.

For foodies, tribute bands and local musicians, head to Eat in the Park in Queen’s Park from 5 – 6 August.

Great outdoors

If you are a fan of the great outdoors there is a lot to experience from cycling adventures to, big hikes and even paddle sports with many activities being free to go along to.

Chesterfield has a range of organised walks throughout the week that are open to everyone, and two Parkruns for those who fancy something slightly more involved. You can also find local self-led walking routes that will take you into the countryside and Peak District through the Summer in Chesterfield campaign.

Get out on the water with the Chesterfield Canal Trust and try out paddle sports or cruise up the historic canal on one of the trust’s tripboats. You can also take in an unrivalled view of the town and the surrounding countryside with a tower tour at the Crooked Spire.

Visitors will be able to enjoy one of the country’s leading street food markets when Peddler Market takes over New Square from 23 June – 24 June. Come along to sample award winning street food, craft drinks, music, art, and family activities.

Chesterfield not only has regular markets on Monday, Friday, and Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, but we also have one of the largest flea markets in the country every Thursday. A variety of specialist markets are taking place throughout the year too including the record fair, artisan market, young person’s market, and the vegan market amongst others.

Shopping in Chesterfield is a great experience both in the town centre and just outside on Chatsworth Road and Whittington Moor. We have a number of well-known chain stores, and a fantastic selection of independent retailers who are happy to offer gift advice where needed. Chesterfield Champions support local community and charities with exciting initiatives

Businesses across Chesterfield have kicked off the summer with a number of initiatives, aimed at supporting the community and local charities.

Recent events and activities included a postcard show featuring 173 artists, a charity football match between local businesses, a dance group for residents affected by cancer, and a bake-off to raise funds for vulnerable people in our area.

Chesterfield Postcard Show raises £1,200 for local charity

This year, the Chesterfield Postcard Show saw record entries, donations, and visitors, raising over £1,200 for local charity, Junction Arts.

The 2023 show featured 329 pieces of original art, with 173 artists, creatives and community groups submitting their work for the exhibition, which took place between the 9th and 19th May at West Studios in Chesterfield.  Many entries were from local people but there were also submissions from across the UK and Europe.

All money raised from the sale of the postcards supports Junction Arts community projects and events in the area, creating a better future for everyone through the arts.

Over 200 people visited the show during the 10 days and 52 artworks have been sold so far.   For those that didn’t make it to the exhibition, the postcard-size artworks are still available to buy, via the Junction Arts Etsy page.

The Chesterfield Postcard Show was organised by Junction Arts and local artist Dave Elsom, to allow creatives, communities, and up-and-coming artists to show their work in a professional exhibition.

This year’s show was entitled ‘Wish You Were Here’ and celebrated the importance of getting creative and its impact on people’s self-esteem and well-being.

Hannah Bowdler, Relationship Fundraiser at Junction Arts said: “We are so grateful to the artists and groups who have created and donated their work in the theme of ‘Wish You Were Here’, both Dave and I were blown away by the support and growth in uptake for the second show. We can’t wait to see what 2024’s show will be like!”

This year’s exhibition of mini masterpieces was sponsored by local financial services firm, Rosewood Wealth Management. Their support allowed organisers to run outreach workshops within the town centre, increasing accessibility and increasing local involvement.

Attending the exhibition at West Studios, it was amazing to see some of the incredible postcard designs produced by participants. We especially liked the fact that those involved were able to produce their own unique, personalised mini masterpieces. Organised by Junction Arts, their mission to unite the community through the medium of art was something we greatly admired.”


Local transport firms face off in charity football match

Leading taxi and private hire firm City Taxis went head-to-head with Chesterfield vehicle hire company B&B Vehicles in a charity football match last weekend, raising money for The Sheffield 1000 and Support Dogs.

The Sheffield 1000 aims to get 1000 people donating £1 each week, with the money donated to local charities and good causes every week of the year. Support Dogs train puppies into support dogs for people with epilepsy, autism and other disabilities in their day to day lives.

The game, which took place at Bramall Lane, was organised by City Taxis’ Business Development Director Paul Gosney and B&B Vehicles’ Maz Kenyon.

After a strong start by City, B&B pulled it back with an equaliser that meant it was 1-1 when the final whistle blew. With a tense penalty shootout deciding the winner, City managed to come out on top after professional footballer Joe Green saved three of the five shots.

Paul Gosney, Business Development Director at City Taxis, said: “It was great to manage the City Taxis team to victory today, all for a good cause. After a strong 90 minutes from both sides, it was a fantastic ending to a brilliant day, where we raised both funds and awareness for our chosen charity, The Sheffield 1000.”


New dance group opens for Chesterfield and Derbyshire residents affected by Cancer

People across Derbyshire who have been affected by cancer are invited to join a new local dance group to meet, socialise and get together with other people living with the condition.

The Dancing for Health sessions have been kindly funded by the Chesterfield Royal Hospital Charity Fund which enables the classes to be provided free to all the participants.

Sessions are held every Thursday morning 10am – 11.00am at the Calow Community Centre, Allpits Road, Calow, Chesterfield S44 5AT.  Refreshments are available after the class and an opportunity to socialise with other group members.

Leading a physically active lifestyle during and after cancer treatment is linked to an improvement in many of the adverse affects of cancer and its treatment.

The Dancing for Health Seated Dance programme is specially designed to accommodate people affected by cancer and provides a physical and social activity that is gentle and safe.

The dance routines are fun and easy to learn. They can be done seated or standing, making them fully inclusive and get everyone involved no matter what their ability.

Dancing is a multidimensional activity that contributes positively to many aspects of a person’s overall health. Boosting happiness and mental health and keeping both the body and brain active to make participants feel great.

The classes are delivered in a group setting with others who share similar health challenges. Participants are also welcome to bring a friend or family member with them.

Tracey Barnes, Managing Director, Dancing for Health CIC, said:  “Dancing for Health provides fun and friendly dance classes for people who can’t attend a mainstream dance class because of medical or age-related reasons. Our classes are really accessible for people with cancer and enables them to use dance, to help manage their symptoms and improve mood.

“My job is so rewarding, making a difference to people’s quality of life and hearing how our dance classes have helped them is why I go to work every day.”


Oasis Studio hosts ‘bake off’ for Hope House Charity

Chesterfield-based creative and digital firm, Oasis Studio recently hosted a bake off competition, to raise funds and awareness for Hope House Chesterfield.

The charity works to support those who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness in the Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire area.

Oasis Studio’s team worked together and held a ‘budget-bake off’, where members of the charity and residents joined them for the morning. It provided an opportunity for the Oasis Studio team to hear about Hope House’s upcoming charity events and learn more about the crucial service they provide.

Paul Deakin, Director of Oasis Studio commented: “The cost-of-living crisis doesn’t discriminate. Everyone has been affected by it. Whether it’s looking at how you can spend less on your weekly shop or assisting a family member with household bills to get them by, it continues to affect everyone. Local charities aren’t exempt from this. With people having less available funds, financial support for charities has also suffered.

“As a local business, we have a responsibility to support our local community and charities in any way we can. Hope House Chesterfield offers a lifeline to some of the most vulnerable individuals in the Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire area, and without support from the local community and businesses, they would struggle to continue to provide that crucial lifeline.

“The team raised £170 for the event and donated the bakes for the team and residents at Hope House Chesterfield to enjoy.”

Unusual markings designed to ‘ward off witches’ discovered at historic Chesterfield landmark

A series of unusual markings on the fireplace at Chesterfield’s Revolution House have been officially confirmed as protection marks designed to ward off witches.

The apotropaic markings (commonly referred to as anti-witch marks) depict a double ‘V’ which is a reference to the Virgin Mary Protector of Life and Family. Markings like this were usually placed near openings or windows with the intention of keeping witches and evil spirits out.

The unusual markings were spotted by one of the museum team who photographed them and sent the images to Professor Ronald Hutton, who kindly identified them.

Professor Ronald Hutton, a professor at the University of Bristol and leading authority on folklore, said: “These are convincing examples of apotropaic markings. The interlocked VVs are absolutely standard. The others are harder to make out but could correspond to more than one other known type of mark in the repertoire.”

Revolution House was originally constructed as a farmhouse in the 16th century and later became an inn during the 17th century – during this period there was a heightened belief in witches and witchcraft.

On Sunday 11 June Revolution House will be hosting a Witchcraft event. Visitors will be able to learn all about the 17th century witch hunts and get hands on to create their own witch pot.

Like apotropaic markings, witch pots were believed to protect your family and house from an attack by a witch’s curse and ensure you came to no harm.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We already knew that Revolution House had a rich history but this is an interesting discovery that tells us more about the people who have used the building in the past.

“We’ve been planning the Witchcraft event for a while and this discovery makes it even more relevant – the event is set to be a great day out for everyone and I hope lots of you will come along and make your own witch pot.”

The Witchcraft event is free to attend but donations are welcome and takes place on Sunday 11 June between 11am and 4pm. Creating a witch pot will be a drop-in session and visitors will be treated on a first come first served basis.

Other events are planned at the house each month throughout the summer including the return of legendary Tudor Minstrel Dante Ferrara, a demonstration of the healing properties of herbs and a display showing a selection of the council’s collection of sketches and art by Joseph Syddall.
