Superior Wellness supports national Fibromyalgia Awareness week

As official partners of Fibromyalgia Action UK, Chesterfield’s Superior Wellness will be raising awareness and much needed funds during national Fibromyalgia Awareness week, taking place 5-12 September.

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes persistent pain all over the body.  As well as widespread pain, other symptoms will include but are not limited to fatigue and non-refreshing sleep, and brain or fibro fog.

Although there is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, there are treatments to help relieve some of the symptoms and make the condition easier to live with.  Hydrotherapy and relaxing in warm water are a great way for those suffering with the condition to find some potential respite. Routine soaks can also help relieve stress which is another that can make symptoms more intense.

The team at Superior Wellness will be holding a cake sale to raise funds and promoting the charity all week to mark the occasion. A charity team has also been set up and they are arranging a series of events throughout the year to raise further funds.

Sarah Elphick, Head of Marketing said: “We are delighted to be working closely with Fibromyalgia Action UK and supporting the national awareness week. We have a number of customers who have fibromyalgia and have told us a nice soak in a hot tub has helped them. The warm water and the hydrotherapy from the jets can make a difference.

“We hope to raise awareness of the condition through the partnership, particularly amongst young people, as many may not even know what it is.”

Last month, a team of 39 from Superior Wellness took part in Tough Mudder and raised £2,905 for the charity.

Work begins on multi-million pound urgent care centre at Chesterfield Royal Hospital

Work has started on an exciting £24million development that will revolutionise the way Chesterfield Royal Hospital delivers Urgent and Emergency care.

After years of planning and months of preparation to make the site ready for work to begin, the hospital is now moving into the next stage of the project which will see the building come to life.

Construction begins today (7th September 2021) and will take approximately 18 months to complete, opening in summer 2023. This New Urgent and Emergency Care Development will provide the hospital with a state of the art environment that enables staff to truly transform urgent and emergency care services.

The stylish, new Urgent and Emergency Care Department building has integration at the heart, bringing together a host of services into defined clinical areas to ensure that patients can get the support they require based on their clinical need, be it a minor illness or injury, or emergency care for a serious accident or critical care for a life-threatening condition.

This vision will become a reality when the building, developed thanks to involvement from staff, partners and representatives across the Joined Up Care Derbyshire integrated health system, is complete. The Development will include an Urgent Treatment Centre for minor injuries or illness, as well as defined areas for paediatric care, major injuries and medical emergencies.

There is also dedicated space for patients requiring emergency mental health support.  The hospital is already working closely with clinicians within the Trust and the wider healthcare system to develop its pathways to deliver a truly integrated model of care encompassing therapy, diagnostic imaging, primary community and social care services.

Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at the hospital, Berenice Groves is leading the project and explains more: “After a significant focus on  planning and design in consultation with clinical colleagues and partners, we are delighted to get this development underway. It’s exciting to see our project come to life and is a real boost for everyone to see the work begin. This is the biggest development in our Urgent and Emergency Care Services since the hospital opened its doors in 1984.

“As we are building a new department, our current emergency services will not be affected or disrupted during the construction. We look forward to seeing the building develop over the next few years, ready to open to patients in summer 2023. The new department and the ongoing pathway developments will benefit our patients for years to come”

Demand for Emergency Care is increasing year on year and the trust has exhausted all available opportunities to expand and adapt services within the existing footprint. The current Emergency Department (ED) was built in 1984 and has delivered outstanding care to our patients, however as demand increases the department’s ability to work flexibly and adapt to new ways of working is limited. With this in mind, and taking into account emerging models of care, learning from the pandemic experience and building on closer partnership links, the Trust made the decision to revise the plans to refurbish the current Emergency Department and embark upon a new build approach. The building will be situated next to the current ED building with the aim of ensuring patients can be streamlined to the most appropriate clinical service based on their clinical need.

Katherine Lendrum is the Trust’s Consultant in Emergency Care and Clinical Lead for the Emergency Department, she said: “This will make a huge difference and the team is incredibly excited to see work start on the building. This last 18 months have given us an opportunity to apply what we’ve learned throughout the pandemic, cement the partnerships we’ve developed and to strengthen new ways of working that ensure our patients’ experience is a good one.

“Whatever level of care you need, you will immediately be in the right place when you arrive at the door.  Then it’s our job to assess you and make sure you see the right expert in the right part of our Emergency or Urgent Care Department as quickly as possible.  This could be a GP, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Therapist or Consultant, but it will be someone with the skills and expertise that you require.

“Making the best use of our resources is a key part of patient care by ensuring our patients are given the most appropriate care in the right place without placing undue pressure on our services. We have seen demand on services build at the hospital and to continue with our ED as it currently stands wasn’t an option in the long term. We are close to having outgrown it but additional capacity has been built into the design of the unit to change the way we can deliver care and improve the experience for our patients.”

By involving staff, partners and representatives across the Joined Up Care Derbyshire integrated health system in the creation of this new facility the new Urgent and Emergency Care Department will provide collaborative services that make the most of digital innovation and technology, best practice care and treatment and give patients the best possible outcomes through exceptional care.

The project will also include building a new paediatric assessment unit (PAU) alongside the Royal’s Nightingale Children’s Unit to ensure babies, children and youngsters with acute illness or injury are assessed, investigated, observed and treated with an expectation of discharge home in 12 hours or less. Work is due to start on that part of the development in the New Year.

Plans for new 3G pitch announced by Chesterfield FC Community Trust

Chesterfield FC Community Trust has announced plans to install a new 3G pitch on Stand Road, for the benefit of the community.

The location of Stand Road would ensure the club and the community has a facility just a stones’ throw away from the Technique Stadium, situated on Sheffield Road.

John Croot, chief executive of the Community Trust, said: “If our plans receive the go-ahead, it will be a valuable community facility, operated by the Trust.

“We will engage with new and existing groups who wish to use the facility, further enhancing our efforts to make sport accessible for all in the area.”

The Community Trust has been working to further engage local residents across Chesterfield since taking over the running of the football club in summer 2020.

Recent initiatives include a Christmas Toy Appeal, provision of free school meals for local children during the school holidays, and providing education for youngsters in local schools.

A spokesperson for Chesterfield Borough Council said: “The council is currently working with Chesterfield Football Club regarding the potential for one 3G pitch to be developed in the area.

“We welcome any developments that would bring new opportunities for the local community, however the football club will be required to go through the full planning application process before any development on the site can go ahead.

“If and when a detailed planning application is received for the site, this would be subject to consultation in line with our usual planning processes and local residents would have opportunity to make formal representation before any decision was taken.”

Derbyshire Distillery raising spirits at Peak Village as new store opens

Dr Derbyshire’s Emporium is the latest new tenant to commit to the Peak Village (formerly Peak Shopping Village) retail and lifestyle destination in Rowsley, following recent store openings by Denby Pottery and Dotique, the designer fashion brand for women.

The brainchild of premium gin-maker Derbyshire Distillery, Dr Derbyshire’s Emporium will be an all-round experience for gin-lovers with sampling, personalised labelling and regular gin-related events at the store, which is due to open in early October.

Set up in 2018, Derbyshire Distillery uses traditional methods to produce high quality gins, vodkas and liqueurs using the best local and international ingredients and fresh Derbyshire water. The store at Peak Village is the brand’s first standalone retail outlet but it is already the gin of choice for many hotels, restaurants and bars in the region.

“It’s a real vote of confidence in the changes we’re making that Derbyshire Distillery, Denby and Dotique have all committed in the past few weeks. A huge amount of work is being done to improve the site and that’s generated a lot of interest from aspirational brands looking for a suitable outlet near to Chatsworth, Bakewell and Matlock. We’re expecting to announce more exciting new shops and events by the end of the year and for Peak Village to become a real ‘must-go’ destination for locals and visitors alike,” says Katayune Jacquin, Peak Village Centre Manager, who has worked at the site for more than a decade.

Situated in the village of Rowsley on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Peak Village hosts nearly 20 shops and employs between 80 and 100 people. Aiming to offer something distinctively different from traditional high streets and shopping malls, Peak Village is targeting a higher percentage of independent retail brands and operators with a strong local connection.

Peak Village was bought earlier this year by the Devonshire Group, the company that represents the interests of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire at nearby Chatsworth.

Approximately £1m has been committed to redevelopment with more than half already spent on essential repairs, redecoration, refitting of vacant units, and the landscaping of public areas with planters and new street furniture.

“The ongoing upgrade of facilities is good news for Peak Village, which was underinvested for some years previously, and it’s good news for the local economy. This investment has secured existing local jobs and is creating new jobs both directly and through the local companies and suppliers we’re working with. What’s more, Peak Village will be drawing in millions of pounds of retail revenue to the Derbyshire economy.” says Andrew Byrne, Property Development Director at the Devonshire Group.

The Devonshire Group has strong experience in retail through its existing operations at Chatsworth (the estate farm shop and gift shops) and at Bolton Abbey and is a landlord to many retail outlets across its estates in Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

Banner Jones Solicitors supports grassroots football

Banner Jones Solicitors has announced it has become the new season kit sponsor for the Wingerworth Bulls under 7’s football team.

The Wingerworth Bulls are part of the Wingerworth Junior Sports Association (WJSA) that was formed in 1986 by Geoff Lord.

During the 1985 football season the school fixtures had been temporarily suspended, so a group of local lads, led by his son, approached Geoff Lord with a plea to arrange a game of football. Geoff told them to get the names together of 15 boys aged 13 and he would see what he could do. 36 years later, Geoff Lord remains the club president and child welfare officer and the club continues to grow year on year.

In 1996 they played their first game on The Avenue in Wingerworth, and although the area that has changed significantly in recent years, the WJSA continue to play football there.

The under 7’s coach, Craig Mann says: “WJSA is committed to making football accessible for all, regardless of ability, gender or background. Everyone is welcome at WJSA.

“Our core values are to create an enjoyable and positive experience of football, with the main focus at this age being confidence on the ball. The club enables children of all ages to participate in football in a fun, educational and safe environment.

This is the first season for my under 7’s team and I am really looking forward to seeing them grow. We train every Monday evening at The Avenue, and we will play games in the North Derbyshire Youth Football League on Saturdays.’

New vintage antiques store with a modern twist opens in Chesterfield

A new store trading in antiques and vintage items is coming to Chesterfield, adding yet another independent business to the town.

The Lucky Magpie Salvage will open this weekend (Saturday 4th September) following a major refurbishment of the premises on Hollis Lane Top.

Owner, Suzie Kujawinski has worked with her team in putting together a unique customer journey, featuring sections designated for different focuses. The store will sell a range of old items including: lamps and lights, military, nostalgia, signs, fairground, and Kitchenalia.

Suzie said: “I really want to make sure that The Lucky Magpie is supporting local, independent businesses and also up-and-coming creatives that have a flair for upcycling pieces.

“Whether you’ve got five pounds or a hundred pounds, it is open to everybody. So whether you just want to spend some pocket money or invest in something for life, you can find it here.

Chatsworth Launches Recruitment Drive For Hospitality Staff

Chatsworth has launched a recruitment drive to fill more than 30 hospitality roles in its cafes, pub and restaurants across the Derbyshire estate.

A selection of full and part-time positions are available for immediate starts in the hotels and restaurants, working in both the kitchens and front of house.

The recruitment drive follows the launch of a professional training academy to support new employees at Devonshire Hotels & Restaurants Group. The Devonshire Hospitality Academy will welcome its first students in autumn 2021 for its in-house training programme, which will lead to a recognised industry qualification at Level 2 Apprenticeship. Crucially, on successful completion of the course, permanent full time jobs will automatically offered.

In an effort to attract candidates and highlight the exciting career opportunities on offer, two Recruitment Days are taking place at Chatsworth on Thursday 9 September and Saturday 11 September.

Every attendee will be guaranteed an interview with a member of the senior hospitality team with a range of short term part-time seasonal roles on offer to longer-term opportunities with for those looking to build a career.

Richard Palmer, Devonshire Hotels MD, is particularly interested in finding people looking to make a longer term commitment and take advantage of the 18-month industry recognised training programme on offer.

“The loss of the labour force from Europe and the impact of the pandemic on the hospitality sector being one of the last to re-open has created a ‘perfect storm’ impacting on our ability to recruit and find people with the right skills.

Local entrepreneurs set to be recognised for hard work and resilience at 2021 Love Chesterfield Awards

The entrepreneurial achievements of new sole traders and limited companies are being celebrated in the brand-new 2021 Love Chesterfield Awards, organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with EntireFM – Complete Facilities Management.

Four businesses – CarMats.co.uk, Precious Memories by Anne-Marie, Stanedge Golf Ltd and Virtual World Studios Ltd – have all been shortlisted for the Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Sponsored by Banner Jones Solicitors, the new category recognises the achievements, leadership, vision and success of new sole traders and limited companies in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire over the last 18 months.

In addition to the accolade, the winner of the award will also receive 10 hours of free mentoring with Banner Jones Solicitors as well as a 12 months of marketing support through Chesterfield Champions with awards organiser Destination Chesterfield covering the contribution cost for a financial year.

The winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year award will be announced at a black- tie awards ceremony at the Winding Wheel Theatre on 20th October 2021.

Vicar Lane encourages visitors to enjoy a ‘Blind date with a book’

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre has teamed up with The Works and Waterstones to bring an innovative initiative to the shopping centre, aimed at getting more local people to enjoy reading.

In celebration of National Read a Book Day, customers can enjoy a Blind Date with a Book – completely free.

From Monday 6th September, Vicar Lane is encouraging people to head to St James Square where they’ll find a ‘Reading Zone’, complete with beanbags and deckchairs, and the Blind Date with a Book set up.

Locals can have a read of the brief synopsis on the wrapped books, and pick one that takes their fancy.

The Reading Zone will be in situ at the shopping centre in the heart of Chesterfield for the week.

Shaun Brown, Operations Manager, Vicar Lane said ‘’We’re excited to celebrate National Read a Book Day with the launch of Blind Date with a Book.

“We all lead busy lives and it’s hard to remember to leave time for ourselves, so by setting up a Reading Zone at the shopping centre, we hope people will be encouraged to take time out of their day to sit down and read a book!’’

The latest initiative comes off the back of the popular Summer Zone at Vicar Lane, which saw residents treated to some of the best sporting action on the big screen in St James Square over July and August, along with pop-up bars and food vendors.

ActionCOACH boosts fundraising efforts for children’s cancer charity

Business coaching company ActionCOACH, which has a team based in Chesterfield has partnered with Children with Cancer UK to help raise money for the charity.

Throughout September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Action Coaches across the UK are raising funds by delivering seminars for business owners – and 100% of the ticket price is being donated to the charity.

Children with Cancer UK is the leading national children’s charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer.

Julie Wagstaff, UK Co-founder of ActionCOACH, is thrilled to be launching the initiative: “I think everyone has been affected by cancer at some point in their lifetime, but childhood cancers are particularly agonising to encounter and it’s a shocking statistic that on average 12 children and young people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer every day.

“We’re determined to help raise both awareness and funds for a brighter future for the children and families touched by cancer. We understand that children are the dreamers and entrepreneurs of the future, and that’s why we want to encourage business owners to get involved and help us make an impact on so many families across the UK.”

Around 4,500 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK, with it being the leading cause of death in children aged one to 14 years old.

Survivors can face a lifetime of serious health issues as a result of the intensive treatment used to treat their cancer, so the charity’s funds also focus on research for new therapies that are safer, kinder and with fewer toxic side effects. So far, the ActionCOACH UK network of 200+ coaches has raised over £27,000 for the charity, but they don’t want to stop there.

Chesterfield businessmen to complete marathon for canine charity

Two dog-loving local businessmen are planning to design and complete their very own marathon route to raise money for their favourite canine charity.

Paul Gosney, who lives in Chesterfield and Tony Dent, from Ecclesall, Sheffield, are taking part in the Virtual London Marathon on Sunday October 3 on behalf of national charity Support Dogs, whose training centre is in Brightside.

Tony, a partner at B&B Vehicle Contracts, a vehicle leasing specialist in Chesterfield, and Paul, business development manager at City Taxis, are old friends who share a common love of dogs.

The pair, neither of whom have run a marathon before, are currently plotting a 26.2 mile marathon route starting at Dronfield Woodhouse and finishing at Support Dogs via various parts of Sheffield – hopefully around six hours later.

They plan to post staging posts online to encourage supporters to cheer them on at various points along the way, snaking through the city and avoiding as many hills as possible! Support will be provided by their friend Jim as pacemaker on his electric trike, Spike le Trike, and Tony’s wife Katey in a back-up van.

“We both love dogs, and Support Dogs do amazing work,” says Tony, whose company has made Support Dogs their charity of the year.

“I’ve known about their work and supported them for many years. I was recently watching one of their videos about a young girl whose life was turned round by her assistance dog, and every time I watch it, I cry!  It’s heart-breaking and heart-warming at the same time.

“It gives someone a new lease of life which you would not expect from an animal. The sheer joy that a dog brings to people’s lives and what these dogs do is incredible. They give people who have disabilities such freedom and a new lease of life, and that’s what’s it’s all about for me.”

Tony and Paul are now hard at work in the gym and pounding the streets in preparation for the event, in which participants can choose their own marathon-length route.

Toy had heart surgery two years ago, so the Virtual London Marathon is a big challenge. Both men, who have set themselves a fundraising target of £3,000 are planning a practice half marathon route in September to test their fitness.

“When people hear that we’re doing a ‘virtual’ marathon they seem to think that it’s online and we’re not actually running 26.2 miles – but believe me we are!” says Paul.

Support Dogs trains assistance dogs for children and adults with autism, epilepsy and physical disability, enabling them to lead safer, more independent lives. It receives no government funding, and for every dog it trains it receives more than 50 requests for help.
