University of Derby Professor shortlisted for ‘Most Innovative Teacher of the Year’ award

Dr Ian Turner, Associate Professor in Learning and Teaching at the University of Derby, has been shortlisted in the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year’ category of the 14th annual Times Higher Education Awards 2018.

Dr Turner is Assistant Head of Department at the University of Derby where he has worked for eight years. He is a creative and innovative lecturer whose personal teaching philosophy echoes the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle’s famous quote, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

The awards – known as the Oscars of higher education – include 18 categories, covering the full range of university activity. ‘Most Innovative Teacher’ recognises academics whose imagination and passion have transformed a course and inspired their students.

Dr Turner’s unique teaching style uses a creative approach he devised called Lecture Theatre Pantomime. This uses costumes, role play, props and analogies to make demanding subjects such as immunology and genetics both enjoyable and accessible to his students.

He is also committed to enhancing the University-wide student experience, through the implementation and support of key learning and teaching strategies to encourage colleagues to adopt their own innovative methods.

In May last year, he won the HE Bioscience Teacher of the Year Award for his creative approach. He also received a National Teaching Fellowship in 2014 – the most prestigious individual award in higher education – in recognition of his outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession.

In the wider community, Dr Turner is keen to share his interest in science with younger audiences, bringing it to life by introducing scientific principles through the medium of popular culture. He regularly attends events to give talks on subjects including the science of superheroes, Doctor Who and Star Wars.

Dr Turner said: “I am humbled and delighted to be shortlisted for this award. Irrespective of the outcome, being considered for one of the ‘Oscars of Higher Education’ is a great honour.”

Professor Malcolm Todd, University of Derby Provost (Academic), added: “Dr Turner’s shortlisting in the ‘Most Innovative Teacher of the Year’ category is a tremendous achievement, and reflects his commitment to finding creative new ways to deliver the highest standards of learning and teaching to our students. As a university, we are committed to teaching excellence, as reflected in our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold rating, and the high standards of our academic staff.”

John Gill, Times Higher Education editor said: “Times Higher Education is extremely proud to host these awards once again. In yet another record year for entries, and with over 70 institutions represented on the shortlist, it’s a genuine privilege for the THE team and our judges to read through these many and varied tales of excellence from all corners of the UK. It’s a significant achievement to make this shortlist, and we look forward to honouring all the finalists at the Grosvenor in November.”

The Times Higher Education Awards 2018 gala ceremony will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London on Thursday 29 November 2018.

Expansion and relocation for Chesterfield beauty salon

A popular beauty salon has relocated from Sheffield to Chesterfield and taken on new premises on Chatsworth Road in order to meet increased demand from customers in the area.

Originally established in Sheffield in 2015 by passionate beautician Rebecca Hales, Blush Nails and Beauty is a full-service salon offering beauty treatments including, nails, tanning, massages and facials.

To date, the entrepreneur has worked alone but, just three years after opening, demand for appointments from customers in both South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire has prompted the move to a new salon that can accommodate her growing team – which now consists of four beauty therapists and nail technicians.

The premises, which is situated next to Bridal Boutique, the Little White Dress and hair salon Elysium, consists of three fully equipped treatment rooms and a nail bar.

Rebecca was advised on the lease of the premises by Chesterfield-based commercial property expert Ian Osborn of Banner Jones Solicitors, who are Chesterfield Champions.

Rebecca commented: “I am delighted to have secured the premises in Chesterfield and have already noticed an increase in clients since opening here.

“From launching on my own three years ago to now being a core team of four I’m proud of how far the business has come and am now looking ahead to the future where I hope to expand the team further in line with client demand.

“I’d like to extend my thanks to Ian Osborn and the Banner Jones team for their support and advice throughout the whole process.”

Supporting Rebecca with the lease of the property, Ian – a commercial property specialist at Banner Jones – commented: “Chesterfield’s Chatsworth Road is thriving, and Blush Nails and Beauty is the latest in a raft of new additions to its retail and hospitality offering.

“We’re delighted to have been able to support Rebecca in securing her new premises, and we look forward to seeing her move forward with her ambitious expansion plans.”

All four Proact Stadium stands now sponsored

All four stands at the Proact Stadium are now sponsored, following news that a sponsorship deal for the North Stand has been agreed with a long established, family-run business, Harold Lilleker & Sons Ltd.

Drew Lilleker, whose company has been arranging funerals in Chesterfield since around 1850, is delighted to have agreed a sponsorship deal with the club. He said: “Being a local, family business, it’s good to be doing something that’s involved in the community. My grandfather, Harold, was a huge Chesterfield fan who travelled the country to watch the Spireites so it’s nice to see his name on a stand.”

Debra Johnson, Chesterfield’s Corporate Relationship Manager, said: “We are delighted to be working with another local company and I would like to thank Drew and everyone at Harold Lilleker and Sons Ltd for supporting the club in this way. It is very pleasing that sponsorship deals are now in place for all four stands.”

Chesterfield Champion helps another to ‘secure its largest financial investment’

Mitchells Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers, located on Saltergate in Chesterfield, was approached by IT, Cloud and Communications provider Addooco to assist with the purchase of its business premises.

The process – which normally takes between three to six months – only took eight weeks because of Mitchells’ swift work providing the funder with all the necessary information and conducting smooth negotiating skills.

Andrew McDaid, a Mitchells Partner, said: “Addooco has been a really important client for us and over the years we’ve seen the company go from strength to strength with healthy business growth and staff expansion. For the firm, the next natural step was to secure a considerable property asset and what better building to invest in, than the company’s own premises?

“Mitchells has been in operation now for 150 years, but we recognise that in the ever-evolving business landscape, our industry has changed. Companies expect so much more from their accountants, which is why we do so much more than number crunching. Our collaboration with Addooco is in line with our ethos of being perceived as more of a strategic partner as opposed to just another service provider.

“We specialise in helping businesses grow, assisting firms of all sizes, to overcome big challenges so they can move to the next level of growth, allowing us to provide real value in a changing world.”

The purchase of Dundee House on Millennium Way in Chesterfield was officially completed on 29 June 2018.

Addooco’s Managing Director Richard Walters said: “We’ve employed Mitchells for a long time and their work handling our financial matters has always been so impressive that it made total sense to ask for their assistance in making such a significant financial commitment.

“We felt purchasing the building was helping the company to take the next logical step in literally cementing our presence in the region and a significant strengthening of the company’s financial position, instilling confidence among current and future clients about the financial strength of the company. Not only that, but we’re strong supporters of Destination Chesterfield and Chesterfield Champions so we were keen to provide a physical commitment to the town.

“The property acquisition will make a real difference to our business going forward. We can’t thank Mitchells enough for their excellent and professional work throughout.

“What really impressed us was when our bank initially made a verbal offer, which at the time I thought was good, Mitchells used their experience and expertise to negotiate better terms, lower arrangement fees and no personal security. This proves it really does pay to use the services of a specialist in this area.”

Mitchells Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers has been at the heart of the business community for 150 years. The company specialises in helping businesses throughout Chesterfield, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire grow and prosper.
