Chesterfield firm named best in county

Marine maintenance equipment manufacturer Cathelco has been named Derbyshire Business of the Year 2014 by the county’s Chamber of Commerce.

The Chesterfield-based firm which produces anti-fouling systems for seawater pipework received the award at the Chamber’s Derbyshire Business Awards at the Roundhouse on Friday. The company also won the Excellence in Innovation award.

In its 55-year history, Cathelco has completed more than 30,000 installations worldwide. Its success stems from its focus on two very specialised but essential safety systems for vessels in the harsh marine environment, namely its pipework anti-fouling systems and its hull corrosion protection systems.

Its Technical Director, Robert Field, said: “We are delighted to have won this award, which comes on the back of a great year for Cathelco. Our BWT system is going into commercial production and there is already strong interest from ship owners worldwide.

“As a result, Cathelco will be enlarging its production facilities and increasing its workforce. This award is testament to the hard work of all our staff in achieving this.”

Another Chesterfield business – Mitchells Chartered Accountants – also scooped an award on the evening for Best use of Technology to Improve Business Performance.

A spokesman at the firm said: “We are delighted to have won the award because it is at the very heart of what we do.  Essentially, we are on a journey of development to transform our clients’ businesses using more than just accountancy skills.

“We’ll continue to blaze a trail in the effort to make business operations and growth easier for our clients.  Our motto is ‘if you can’t measure it you can’t manage it’ – we think this is why the Chamber were kind enough to recognise us for this prestigious award.”

Chamber Chief Executive George Cowcher said: “The Chamber’s congratulations go to all of this year’s winners. We had some stellar entries this year and the judging process was extremely tough, but all of the winning businesses thoroughly deserve their success.

“The standard of competition was extremely high this year which clearly shows that, following a year in which the local economy has made remarkable progress, we have some real success stories of Derbyshire businesses doing well.

“Over the past 12 months, businesses in Derbyshire have been busy investing, innovating, exporting and growing and these awards are testament to the quality of business we have in this city and county.”

Chesterfield restaurant makes 2015 Good Food Guide

Chesterfield’s authentic italian restaurant, Calabria has been recognised in the Good Food Guide 2015.

The restaurant will feature in a new ‘Local Gem’ category in the guide, which highlights local eateries that deliver perfect food and overall experience. Entries to the Good Food Guide are based entirely on anonymous expert inspections and reader recommendations.

The guide, published by Waitrose, is the UK’s bestselling and most respected restaurant guide. It has been running since 1951 featuring some of the world’s most famous restaurants, including those owned by Heston Blumenthal, Gordon Ramsay and Michel Roux Jr.

Based on Glumangate, Chesterfield, Calabria Cucina Italiana & Caffè Bar is a well-loved eatery throughout Derbyshire and no stranger to accolades. As well as being shortlisted for two awards at this year’s Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards, the popular eatery is ranked first in restaurants in Chesterfield on Trip Advisor and was voted Best International Restaurant 2014 at the Derbyshire Food & Drink Awards’.  The team also scooped three awards in the 2013 Chesterfield Food & Drink Awards – Best Customer Service, Chef of the Year, and Restaurant of the Year 2013.

Calabria was also the first restaurant in Derbyshire to receive the Marchio D’Ospitalitá Italiana Seal of Quality, which recognises its commitment to a truly authentic taste of Italy (through the use of authentic quality ingredients) and accurate representation of the country’s distinctive gastronomic culture.

Calabria’s owner, Vittorio Risorto said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this internationally famous guide. It is credit to the whole team that we have been selected. Their customer service, attention to detail and the good quality authentic Italian eating experience they deliver each and every day have earned us the accolades that have achieved national recognition for Calabria in the guide.”

Vittorio also gives his time as a board member to the town’s marketing campaign, Destination Chesterfield, where he has responsibility for the retail sector.

He added: “This isn’t just fabulous news for Calabria, but also great news for our town where there are a growing number of quality places to eat and drink.”

Wherever possible, Calabria uses authentic ingredients in its food, many direct from the Risorto family’s roots in Calabria, the southern region of Italy. Such is the popularity of these ingredients that earlier this year the delicatessen delicibo was opened, located at the new Market Hall in Chesterfield and on-line at www.delicibo.com.

Chesterfield company secures prestigious award

A Chesterfield-based business has won a major industry award for its refurbishment of the offices and reception of the Mining Information Centre in Mansfield.

Leverton UK, based in Wingerworth, has received the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Award for Collaborative Working following its £250,000 major structural refurbishment of the Coal Authority’s reception and offices on Lichfield Lane in Mansfield.

The company, a family business established in 1972 which specialises in commercial refurbishment and shopfitting contracts, was recommended for the award by Shirley Hurst-Cox, the Coal Authority Facilities Manager who submitted the award entry.

Shirley Hurst-Cox commented: “Leverton UK went beyond the brief.  They managed other contractors on site well, brought design flair to the project and recycled and reused existing materials to ensure the refurbishment of our offices and reception were delivered on time and on budget.

“All too often in construction we hear of projects going over budget and being delivered late.  Leverton UK’s collaborative approach to working at every stage just shows this can be avoided. This award is justly deserved.”

Selected from a shortlist of 40 other companies, Leverton UK was presented with the award at the recent East Midlands Committed to Construction Awards Dinner 2014 held in Nottingham – the most prestigious event in the region’s construction industry’s social calendar.

At the ceremony Leverton UK was praised by CIOB for the way, as principal contractor, it worked with other contractors on site and delivered the project ahead of schedule and on budget despite finding asbestos, which had to be removed, two weeks into the refurbishment. The company was also recognised for its value engineering measures, while working on the project, achieved through recycling a number of materials.

The new glass stepping stone bearing the Coal Authority Logo inset into the floor of the new reception was the brainchild of Marcus and uses recycled glass partitions that were removed from the original offices.

Leverton UK Directors, Marcus and Tony are both Fellows of the CIOB which is the highest professional qualification and recognises people who have worked at a senior level in the industry for at least five years.

Marcus Leverton said: “We were delighted to win the award. To be recognised by our peers and the CIOB is incredible.

“We approached the refurbishment of the Coal Authority’s offices like we do every project; with a professional team all sure of the end goal, aware of their own responsibilities, yet willing to go the extra mile to help each other out.

“But most of all, each member of the team, from the client to the guys working on site, know they are appreciated and are wholly included in the project which results in a superior end product. The award is definitely a highlight in the company’s 41 year history.”

The Awards were open to organisations, both public and private; and also individuals located in and around the East Midlands and whose business is related to construction. The categories were chosen to reflect sensitive and diverse issues and matters current in a modern construction industry.

Chesterfield’s parks among the best in the country

Four parks, all maintained by Chesterfield Borough Council, have retained the prestigious Green Flag award.

The national accolade, handed out by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises Britain’s top parks and open spaces.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Both Poolsbrook Country Park and the grounds of Chesterfield and District Crematorium were awarded the honour for the second time, after first receiving the award last year.

Holmebrook Valley Park received its fourth Green Flag, while Queen’s Park‘s award marks the tenth time it has been given Green Flag status.

Councillor Chris Ludlow, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Executive Member for Environment said: “One of our priorities as a council is to keep our parks and open spaces clean, tidy and well-managed.

“The fact that four of our parks have retained Green Flag status shows we are successful in this.

“I’d like to thank our staff and the many residents and volunteers of our friends of the park groups, without whom, this would not be possible.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.

“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.

“Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”

More than 1000 entries for Chesterfield Marathon

A 67-year-old man from Clay Cross has become the 1,000th person to sign up for the Chesterfield Marathon.

John Edward Bee, a former member of North Derbyshire Running Club, will take part in the 26-mile distance event on September 14.  While an experienced runner, it will be the first full marathon for John, who has taken part in a number of half marathons, 10km and 5km races in the past.

John said: “I’m hopeful I can finish the full distance, but whether I can run all the way is another matter!  It’s really all about taking part and showing support for charity.  I just really hope I can finish before everyone else has gone home!

“I was going to keep entering the Chesterfield Marathon a secret from the running club’s members, but I may need to rethink that now! It’s great to be the 1000th entry.”

Daniel Lane, Landlord of John’s local pub, the George and Dragon in Clay Cross, has already offered him a generous sponsorship amount, which John is aiming to at least match as his own sponsorship target.

Daniel added: “John has taken part in the pub’s own charity event – the ‘Dragon Run’ – a five-mile annual race in and around the Clay Cross area for a number of years.  John is yet to be beaten in that race, despite his humble attitude towards his own running ability. We have every confidence he will do very well in the Chesterfield Marathon.”

The Chesterfield Marathon is set to be one of the biggest participant events in the town for more than 30 years. It is in aid of children’s charity Kids ‘n’ Cancer, along with other local charities.

Mike Hyman, founder of Kids ‘n’ Cancer and the Chesterfield Marathon, says: “We are delighted to pass the 1,000th entry milestone for the race.  Interest in the event is really growing with entrants coming in daily.  It should be a fantastic day for Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.”

Runners can take part in a full marathon, half marathon, fun run and a relay race, where four competitors take a share of the course.

In addition to the races, fun activities will be taking place at Queen’s Park throughout the day.  The Chesterfield and Derbyshire Marathon post-race celebrations kick off straight after the fun run finishes with entertainment and live bands managed by Red Butterfly, John Proctor fairground rides, an inflatable arena and sport fun with Premier Sports. The day will finish with a finale of fireworks by Pyrotex award winning professional firework displays.

Entry into the events costs £45 (full marathon) £35 (half marathon) £100 (relay) and £5 (fun run) and anyone raising £200 for Kids ‘n’ Cancer can gain free entry.

Apprenticeships highlighted as being key to Chesterfield’s continued growth

Chesterfield has been highlighted as being on one of the fastest growing corridors in the UK. Speaking at the recent Celebrate Chesterfield event, organised by the town’s marketing campaign Destination Chesterfield, George Cowcher, Chief Executive of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC), said:

“There is the capacity and opportunity for the town to expand and become important to the UK economy.”

With standing room only, more than 200 people attended Destination Chesterfield’s event at the Proact Stadium which reviewed the town’s successes during the last 12 months as well as announcing plans for the forthcoming year.

At the event Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of the Chesterfield Borough Council announced that Chesterfield is creating more jobs.  He said:

“The most recent figures that are available show in the period 2009 to 2012 employment in Chesterfield increased by 10 per cent. This has had a positive impact in helping to reduce unemployment to the current rate of 3.1%.

”And in December 2013, Chesterfield’s unemployment rate was at the national average – which was then 2.9 per cent – for the first time in 20 years, although that gap has increased slightly since then.”

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said:

“The manufacturing, retail and tourism sectors are all strong areas for Chesterfield and are key areas for employment growth.”

In particular the growth in employers taking on apprentices was highlighted as a major contributing factor in reducing unemployment levels in Chesterfield.

Trevor Clay, Principal of Chesterfield College, said:

“Apprenticeships are really important for the continued growth of Chesterfield. They are an important part of helping us narrow the skills gaps that are emerging in many of our industries, specifically manufacturing, engineering, construction and IT. Small to medium size businesses make up a large proportion of Chesterfield’s economy, and being able to train up and develop staff themselves benefits them hugely.”

Mr Clay warned however that the government’s failure to consult with small businesses on its proposed reforms for apprenticeships could lead to a significant reduction in apprentice numbers and harm the town’s continued growth.

Although still under consultation, one of the biggest changes for apprenticeships will be where funding is directed. Currently this goes to training providers and colleges who then deliver the training on behalf of an employer. Plans from the Government include directing funding to employers in the form of Tax Relief from HMRC which they would then be responsible for paying their provider of choice

Trevor Clay said:

“I have grave concerns that the responsibility and administrative burden of commissioning the training and funding will put many SMEs off taking on apprentices. Many of these businesses are owner managed, without an HR and finance team to support them. In many cases the administration has to be taken on by the owner personally who is probably on the shop floor actively running the business on a day-to-day basis.”

At the event Chesterfield College also announced it was opening a technical academy in the town for 14 to 19 year olds who do not want an academic career in order to create a supply chain of new talent for Chesterfield’s industries.

Huw Bowen also highlighted the town’s tourism pull saying: “Achieving the Coach Friendly Town of the Year award for 2013 should not be underestimated. We attract more than 500 coaches of tourists each year, who bring significant spend into our economy.”

He also highlighted that Chesterfield’s shop occupancy rate was one of the highest in the UK, currently standing at 94%.
