Vicar Lane reveals community hero in their midst

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre is proud to reveal the identity of an as yet, unsung hero who has been working under the cover of darkness to help local charities over the last 18 years.

Ken Harper is the centre’s Night Security Officer and, while undertaking his duties and nightly patrols of the centre, he collects the small denominations of change discarded by shoppers throughout the day, collecting them up to make a monthly donation to charity. Over the past 18 years Ken has donated this ‘loose change’ to charities including Hospices and St. John Ambulance and, most recently to Cancer Research and McMillan Cancer Support.

Each year, for the least 18 years, Ken has collected between £150-£190, donating over £1,000 in total to a variety of local charities, proudly pinning the monthly paying-in slip on the team notice board for all to see.

To explain, Ken says, “I thought this was a good way of helping these charities out. Not only do I collect the coins that have been discarded, but I also receive change that has been saved by the on-site cleaning, security and management teams, who bring it in and add it to the pot – it’s a real team effort. The charities I donate to are worthy causes that are dear to my heart.”

New Advisory Board members sought by D2N2 LEP

Businesspeople are needed to join new Advisory Boards at the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, steering the future of an area with an economic output worth more than £45billion.

D2N2 is the private sector-led Local Enterprise Partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary organisations; which promotes economic growth in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. It is England’s fifth largest LEP (of 37), covers an area with a population of over two million and has an economic output of around £45billion GVA (Gross Value Added).

The LEP manages over £500million in resources (via funding from the UK Government and European Union) to invest in its business growth, capital projects, infrastructure, employment promotion, social and community projects, and other services.

Twelve additional private sector board members are now being sought to join four new Advisory Boards for the D2N2 LEP; to better push forward on objectives to boost its area’s economic growth, as set out in its Vision 2030 Strategic Economic Plan.

The Advisory Boards, which will use their expertise and experience to advise the main D2N2 LEP Board, are:

  • Place Board (2 private sector board members needed) – The Place Board will advise the main D2N2 Board on ways to continually improve the quality of places people live and work in, and visit, across the D2N2 LEP area. This will include advice and proposals around vital infrastructure and connectivity (both transport and digital broadband), and the marketing and promotion of individual places; with reference to the ideas, implementation and investment proposals set out under the ‘Place’ key priority in the Vision 2030 Strategic Economic Plan.
  • People and Skills Board (2 positions available) – This Board will develop, put into practice and oversee delivery of the ‘People and Skills’ element of the Strategic Economic Plan; and be the Skills Advisory Panel for the D2N2 LEP. Board members will also lead on developing the ‘People’ element in D2N2’s upcoming Local Industrial Strategy, to be published early next year (2020).
  • Business Growth Board (4 positions available) – Its members will contribute to the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan ambition that, by 2030, the LEP’s area will have a world-class innovation-led, highly productive economy, with a global reputation for manufacturing excellence. The Business Growth Board will focus on making sure D2N2 LEP area businesses are backed in maximising their growth potential and productivity, by coordinating help available in the area and structuring how future support should work. Board members will oversee delivery of the D2N2 Growth Hub’s targets. The Growth Hub is part of the LEP and helps small and medium-sized enterprises via a wide range of free programmes.
  • Innovation Board (4 positions available) – The Innovation Board develops a strategic and coordinated approach to innovation activities, to drive forward the D2N2 LEP area’s economic growth ambitions detailed in its Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) and Science & Innovation Audit report. The Innovation Board will work with universities, policy-makers, delivery partners and businesses to improve the area’s productivity; as set out in the SEP’s ‘Innovation’ priority section.

D2N2 needs 12 new private sector board members to join these Advisory Boards, particularly those with expertise in the work of the Boards, to contribute towards the development of their policies and priorities.

Applicants should have significant experience of working within a successful business based within the D2N2 LEP area, so as to demonstrate credibility and achievement as a driver of private sector growth; be an excellent communicator; demonstrate real leadership; have a good knowledge of the D2N2 LEP area and its needs; and possess extensive business networks and contacts. They must also be available to serve on the D2N2 LEP Advisory Boards for up to three years; and to attend regular meetings and events; with one to two days per month needed for the role (expenses only are available for the roles).

The closing date for Advisory Board member applications is 12noon, Friday 14 June. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to meet the Chair of the Advisory Board they’ve applied to. An announcement will be made in July on successful applicants.

Elizabeth Fagan (below), Chair of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Our area’s economy faces great opportunities but also great challenges, in 2019 and beyond.”

“We want 12 private sector applicants for our four new Advisory Boards; to provide them with expertise, new ideas and to best reflect the communities we serve across the LEP area.”

Applications should quote the reference ‘D2N2 Advisory Board Application’ and include a letter outlining how applicants’ experience and networks would benefit the LEP, paying particular attention to the ‘Experience and Attributes’ criteria outlined.

Businesses encouraged to invest in Derbyshire

Derbyshire County Council have launched a new service to raise the profile of the county among the business community and encourage more companies to invest in the area.

It will:

  • raise the profile of Derbyshire globally to secure investment and create new jobs, acting as a shop window for why Derbyshire should be a destination of choice for investors
  • make it easy for investors to choose Derbyshire by providing a one-stop shop offering quality business support tailored to individual businesses’ needs ranging from help and support to choose the right site in Derbyshire to provide information on workforce skills and assisting with recruitment as well as offering guidance on financial incentives
  • use market intelligence to target businesses in growth sectors to attract them to Derbyshire

The service was launched on behalf of the Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DEP) at an event today on Friday 24 May 2019, attended by around 150 guests including investors, commercial property agents and local businesses.

Guest speakers at the event held at Holiday Inn, South Normanton, included Leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Barry Lewis – speaking about the commitment to unlocking growth and promoting investment – and Managing Director of Toyota Europe Tony Walker, talking about why Toyota invested in Derbyshire and continues to grow its business in the county.

Also in the spotlight was Sally Ambrose from Chatsworth, talking about the estate’s impact on the local economy and how, as a key Derbyshire landowner, it will drive future opportunities to promote development in Derbyshire. And delegates also heard from Peter Storey, Head of Markham Vale, explaining what lies ahead for the council’s premier enterprise zone and why it has been so successful at attracting inward investment to date.

Councillor Lewis said: “Driving economic growth and creating more job opportunities for local people is a vital part of our ambitious plans for the future.”

“Derbyshire has so much to offer investors at both a national and global level. Its unique position at the heart of the UK together with excellent transport links and quality of life make our county an attractive place for businesses to locate invest, live, work and stay.”

Chairman of the Derbyshire Enterprise Partnership Richard Horsley added: “With its rich heritage of innovation and a broad range of development opportunities, Derbyshire has one of the strongest economic performances in the country and I am proud to launch the new service today.”

“With a diverse economy ranging from advanced manufacturing through to creative and digital industries, minerals and aggregates and tourism there are many opportunities for businesses and investors alike to thrive.”

Redbrik Half makes strides with running club partnership

One of the region’s biggest running clubs has teamed up with the 2019 Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon.

North Derbyshire Running Club, which every year hosts a monthly 5k series No Walk in The Park as well as the Bolsover 10k, Hardwick 10k, Spire 10 miles and the Grassmoor 10k, which is new for 2019, has joined forces with the 2019 Redbrik Half Marathon and Peak FM Five Mile Run.

The partnership will see the club provide a minimum of three pacers for the event itself, as well as hold an information stand in Queen’s Park at the start/finish line.

The club will also provide support and advice for runners on all levels, from tips on ‘couch to 5km’ challenges to guidance for more experienced runners – with jog clubs, training nights and more.

Sarah Johnson, Secretary and Coach at North Derbyshire Running Club, said: “This is a really great opportunity for us to showcase what North Derbyshire Running Club is all about – we’re thrilled to be involved.

“The Redbrik Chesterfield Half will be one of our Club Challenge events and we’re excited to enter a team into this year’s race. The event is so popular with local people and gives the community an opportunity to get behind a fantastic mass participation event – it’s great for the town of Chesterfield.”

Exhibition of Chatsworth treasures in New York could boost U.S. visitors to Peak District and Derbyshire

The Peak District and Derbyshire could look forward to a rise in visits from the US as a prestigious exhibition of art and objects from Chatsworth launches at Sotheby’s in New York.

Free of charge and open to the public from 28 June – 18 September 2019, Treasures from Chatsworth: The Exhibition, offers a rare chance to view the legendary Devonshire Collection in the US.

As well as offering a showcase to some of the Derbyshire stately home’s most famous treasures, it is hoped the exhibition will inspire more US tourists to book a trip to the Peak District and Derbyshire – discovering the area’s vibrant cultural scene in the process.

Treasures from Chatsworth will feature over 40 masterworks including fine art, decorative objects, furniture, jewellery, clothing and archival materials from the Devonshire Collection – widely celebrated as one of the most significant art collections in Europe. All objects have been accumulated over 500 years by the Cavendish family, and held at Chatsworth near Bakewell.

Research from VisitBritain shows that the UK’s culture and heritage is a huge draw for overseas visitors – with more than £8 billion spent annually by international tourists who visit castles/historic houses in the UK (based on 2016 figures).

Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board, says the exhibition will help to raise awareness of the area’s rich cultural heritage, which ranges from stately homes such as Chatsworth, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, to a vibrant arts scene and sites of worldwide historical importance, such as the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

The US is the UK’s most valuable inbound visitor market for tourism spend, with US visitors spending a record £3.6 billion across the UK in 2017, up 9% on the previous year. Visits from the US grew 13% to 3.9 million in the same period.

The US also ranked the UK second out of 50 nations for its overall brand in the 2018 Anholt Nation Brands Index, up one place on 2017 and equalling its highest ranking ever.

Tourism’s value to the Peak District and Derbyshire economy was worth £2.15 billion in 2017, supporting 28,630 full-time jobs with 40.45 million visitors travelling to the area in the same period.*

Chesterfield business Ingmans is celebrating after a luxury briefcase which retails at £3,995 has been commissioned by Joseph Cheaney & Sons.

Their leather luggage brand “Cobb England” is manufactured in the heart of Chesterfield alongside their retail and cobbler business.

Andy Ingman said “To say we are proud to be commissioned by a 150 year old,  established English company, with such prestige as “Joseph Cheaney & Sons is an understatement of great magnitude.
Joseph Cheaney are one of the UK’s greatest quality, Goodyear welted shoe manufacturers. ”

“Great Britain ?? is  the cultivator of the shoe industry in the 18th century, and has held its own on a global front ever since. So for our company as small as it may be, shows craftsmanship, quality, consistency and tenacity has made us break through into our capital London. Not only that, Jermyn street which is famous for retail throughout the world.”

The business relocated to the former Burton’s Store in Chesterfield on Burlington Street in 2018.

Andy Ingman, added “We wanted to create a lovely place to shop with a unique experience where we can offer excellent customer service.  We have a beautiful stock of shoes, clothing & handmade leather goods and we have also created a wonderful workspace for shoe repairs.”

Chesterfield has been named the 32nd most instagrammed town in the UK according to research by Cheaphotels4uk.

The travel website used Instagram to analyse where can you find the most picturesque towns in all of the UK.

It researched the photo sharing platform to find out which towns are the most Instagrammed, by examining how many times a post of every UK town had been shared on the site.

30 retailers make the shortlist for the 2019 Chesterfield Retail Awards

30 Chesterfield retailers are set to go head-to-head in the sixth annual Chesterfield Retail Awards.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield, the awards will see shops, stores, barbers, clinics, market stalls and events battling it out to claim at least one of 15 titles.

In a record year for nominations, 17 businesses have been shortlisted for the first time in the prestigious Chesterfield Retail Awards, while three businesses – Geeks Headquarters Ltd, Specsavers and Adorn Jewellers of Chesterfield – hope to defend their 2018 titles.

This year also sees the introduction of a brand new category – Best Town Centre Event, sponsored by Spire Radio – which is designed to recognise the contribution events make to both increased footfall and the vibrancy of Chesterfield.

The awards shortlist follows a lengthy nomination and judging process. All the shortlisted businesses will also battle it out for the coveted overall title of Retailer of the Year 2019, sponsored by East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire).

The winners of the awards will be announced at a black-tie awards ceremony held at Casa Hotel on Wednesday 19 June.

Progress is being made!

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield shares his latest views on the regeneration of Chesterfield.

At the start of 2019, there were various statements made to the effect that this year would be the year that we see progress being made on key developments in Chesterfield. It is now becoming clear that those statements were indeed correct.

The redevelopment of the former Co-op on Elder Way by Jomast Developments has come on in leaps and bounds with the opening of the new Premier Inn hotel officially opened in April.  Further progress will be seen at Northern Gateway in the coming weeks with the opening of the new Saltergate multi-storey car park.

The hotel opening was an encouraging step in the town’s plan to increase overnight stays in Chesterfield by five per cent. More hotel beds will follow at Chesterfield Waterside and Peak Resort.

To ensure we keep our overnight visitors in the town and that they, in turn, spend their money in the local economy, we must have an attractive offering. This is a proposition we continue to build, and it has independent operators at its core.

Jomast is actively targeting independent food, drink and leisure operators to fill the ground floor and basement of the Co-op, mirroring the plans to attract more independently-owned shops to Vicar Lane Shopping Centre by its new owners ALTERIS.

The change in consumer shopping patterns, from ‘bricks and mortar’ to ‘bricks and clicks’ means that when people visit town centres, they no longer want identical, faceless town centres. Town centres today need a variety and mix of shops, restaurants and bars – both chain and independent, as well as events which can engage the whole family.

Recognising the importance of events as a way to draw visitors to the town, I am delighted that this year’s Chesterfield Retail Awards include the brand new category – Best Town Centre Event.

Businesses urged to nominate their food and drink apprentices for top award

The search has begun to find Chesterfield’s Food and Drink Apprentice of the Year in the 2019 Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards.

Sponsored by Apprentice Town (led by Chesterfield Borough Council), the award was introduced last year to recognise the significant contribution young people are making to the town’s thriving food and drink sector.

Awards organiser Destination Chesterfield is urging businesses to now publicly recognise the hard work and dedication of their apprentices by nominating them for the prestigious award. Nominations must be made by midnight on Wednesday 5 June.

Last year the title was won by Corey Elliot (below), an apprentice at The Lilypad Café & Restaurant who plans one day to have his own restaurant.

As well as putting forward their apprentices, businesses can also nominate themselves for the Apprentice Employer of the Year award, which is sponsored by Learning Unlimited (The Chesterfield College Group). Last year the award was won by Stephenson’s Tea & Coffee House.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield added: “Chesterfield’s hospitality sector is growing steadily bringing jobs as well as new tastes and experiences to the town. It’s an exciting time for the sector. This award recognises the importance of apprenticeships in the sector to ensure the town has the skilled workforce to meet the demands of investors.”

“A new Premier Inn recently opened in the former Co-op on Elder Way creating 60 new jobs and more jobs and opportunities in the sector will be coming on board at Elder Way, Chesterfield Waterside and Peak Resort. These developments all need ambitious young people who are keen to build a career, not only in hospitality but also in Chesterfield.”

Neil Johnson, Assistant Director for Economic Growth at Chesterfield Borough Council, which leads the ground-breaking Apprentice Town initiative commented: “Apprentice Town is committed to raising the participation of young people in apprenticeships in Chesterfield.”

Equally important, is recognising and celebrating the achievement of the young people who are currently undertaking their apprenticeship, and this award does just that.”

Foodie families wanted to help find Chesterfield’s best family friendly restaurant

Destination Chesterfield, organiser of the town’s Food and Drink Awards is looking for a foodie family to help find the town’s best family friendly eatery.

Last year the popular Family Friendly award, which is sponsored by Jumble Creative Design, was won by Chesters Restaurant & Takeaway on Sheffield Road.

Now, the search is on to find 2019’s family friendly favourite and Destination Chesterfield needs you to help!

One young family with children aged under 12 is wanted to judge the shortlisted family-friendly establishments. They will help decide who takes the Family-Friendly title in the 2019 Awards which is held in association with the Chesterfield College Group.

The lucky family will win an all-expenses-paid meal for four at three local establishments.  They will also receive two tickets to attend the glittering 2019 Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards ceremony on Wednesday 23 October at the Winding Wheel in the heart of Chesterfield.

To enter the competition applicants simply have to tell Destination Chesterfield why their family should be chosen to mystery shop for the Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards.

Now in its sixth year, the Family-Friendly award aims to find the town’s ultimate eatery that offers great food, excellent facilities for young children, special menus and goes the extra mile to make sure families enjoy their dining experience. As well as enjoying a meal, the winning family will be required to mark the establishments on food, ease of access, cleanliness and the quality and variety of children’s food.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, commented: “Who better to decide the winner of the Family Friendly Award 2019 than families themselves? This competition is a great chance for families in the area to voice their opinion and get to enjoy a meal out too.”

The awards ceremony, which will be held in autumn, promises to be a glittering affair hosted by a celebrity chef (to be announced soon). In addition to the Family Friendly award, there will also be 14 other winners announced at the ceremony.
