Chesterfield’s historic Market Hall has welcomed several new traders as the building in the heart of our town continues to evolve.

The Catch have taken a unit inside selling fresh fish, Blueberry Café is operating the Market Hall Café and Galaxy Travel have taken a unit on the outside of the Market Hall.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “It is always a pleasure to be able to welcome businesses into the Market Hall. There is a fantastic variety selling everything including luxury goods, fresh produce, carpets, wool, and so much more. “The Market Hall is a fantastic place to do business, it sits right in the heart of our town centre, includes a strong community of businesses that work together, with the offer of affordable rents for small businesses to start and to grow.

“With the works planned through our Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project a strong future lies ahead for the Market Hall, with an expanded events space and a revitalised outdoor market the Hall will become an even more important focal point in our town.

“I hope all these businesses will settle into their new premises and have a successful future in the town centre.”

The Catch opened in May and offer a wide range of fresh fish prepared by expert fishmongers.

Aashirvad and Manu, the owners of The Catch, said: “We’re excited to share our passion for fish and its health benefits with the community! We will save you the prep work by cutting and cleaning your fish exactly as you like. We offer pre-orders to ensure we can provide exactly what you desire, along with a wide variety of cuts to suit your preference.

“From whole fish for the adventurous cook to convenient pre-portioned options, The Catch is your one-stop shop for fresh, delicious seafood.”

Blueberry Café has been appointed to run the Market Hall Café and they took over the operation of the café in March.

James Shawe, owner of Blueberry Café, said: “We are delighted to be running the café in the Market Hall. Established in 2008, we have carefully grown the business and are always looking for exciting new opportunities.

“Working with Chesterfield Borough Council has given us the opportunity to invest in the café, protect jobs and develop the business to ensure we continue to offer a superb range of products and services for all visitors to Chesterfield.”

Galaxy Travel has recently taken on one of the units on the outside of the Market Hall. A local taxi and travel firm the company provides a service for any occasion including local trips, nights out, minibus hire, or an airport transfer.

We are proud to be a part of Chesterfield’s dynamic business landscape.”

Markan Foods Limited who will be specialising in Nigerian food will also be setting up in the Market Hall very soon.

Best Bar None Awards Ceremony 2024

Supported by the Home Office and drinks industry, the Best Bar None scheme was launched last summer by Chesterfield Borough Council, in partnership with Best Bar None, Chesterfield Pubwatch and Derbyshire Constabulary.

The scheme is designed to build positive relationships between the licensed trade, police and local authorities, and champions improvements to the management of venues, encouraging best practices to be shared.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We are pleased to have rolled out the Best Bar None scheme in Chesterfield and it is great to see so many businesses receive their accreditations.

“Chesterfield is a very safe place to live, socialise and visit, and we hope that the introduction of this scheme will help people to feel confident that they can enjoy a night out safely.”

Roger Butler, the Chair of Chesterfield Pubwatch, said: “Chesterfield has many great pubs, restaurants, bars and clubs. It is a great place to enjoy an evening out.

“It’s also a very safe place to socialise. However, like towns and cities around the country, alcohol-related crime and disorder can sometimes be an issue.

“We want to ensure Chesterfield is even safer, and even more welcoming at night, and we’re really pleased that a huge number of businesses have been awarded the Best Bar None accreditation.”

Businesses can sign up for the Best Bar None scheme by contacting the council’s licensing team at licensing@chesterfield.gov.uk or by calling 01246 345230.

Expansion of the scheme into other areas of the town has been proposed throughout 2024 and 2025, to help improve night-time safety across all local communities. Learn more about the Best Bar None scheme on the Chesterfield Borough Council website.

Award wins for Chesterfield’s new Emergency Department

Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s Emergency Department continues to receive accolades, this time with a ‘highly commended’ at the Constructing Excellence East Midlands awards.

The ceremony recognises exceptional and innovative designs that have made a positive social impact.

Officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal on 12 July last year, the £27m state-of-the-art Emergency Department was shortlisted in two separate categories in the East Midlands region: Integration and Collaborative Working, and Building Project of the Year.

Constructing Excellence is a membership organisation that exists to drive a better construction sector and an improved built environment through innovation, best practice and collaboration.

The awards, which are judged by a panel of industry experts, are designed to showcase how organisations are living the Constructing Excellence principles.

Dr Hal Spencer, Chief Executive of the Trust said: “We are delighted to receive this award, alongside our construction partners – DSFS and IHP (the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine). A lot of hard work and dedication went into the build of our ED, and it is a good example of putting our patients at the centre of everything we do.

“With an innovative approach to patient flow, highly specialised equipment, ultra-modern technology and a fresh and bright interior – even using locally sourced artwork. We are very proud of our exceptional ED and equally proud of all the people who work in the department to look after our patients.”

This is not the first time Chesterfield’s ED has won an award – it also scoped the ‘Best Interior Design category’ in the national ‘Building Better Healthcare Awards’ in November 2023.

Adrian Leigh, Senior Project Manager for Integrated Health Projects (the Trust’s construction partner), said: “It is real kudos for us and the Trust to have been shortlisted for an award by Constructing Excellence East Midlands.

“The fact that we have been highlighted for Integration and Collaborative Working is a positive reflection on the close working relationship between all partners involved, to create this unique construction.

“From involving the people that would be working in the new ED to the people using it, getting this award one year on from delivery is amazing validation for all the hard work that went into making Chesterfield’s ED the best it could be.”

New EV charging hub to open in the centre of Chesterfield

An ultra-rapid EV charging hub is set to open within just a few minutes’ walk of Chesterfield’s historic marketplace.

Residents and visitors in the town will benefit from a new eight-bay charging station, which will be situated off Saltergate.

The new charging hub has been installed by Be.EV, and is set to launch this Friday with a special half price offer for its app users.

The ultra-rapid chargers, which Be.EV says are the fastest in Chesterfield, can add up to 165 miles of range in a short 20-minute stop (compared to several hours on a 7kW fast charger).

Switched on and available for use, the Chesterfield hub joins the north’s largest public EV charging network that connects communities nationwide.

Chesterfield has nearly 3,500 EVs, and the installation will help accelerate the EV transition in the town, and for the wider Midlands region. This is one of Be.EV’s first charging sites in the region, and the charging network already operates over 700 charge points nationwide.

Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV, says: ”We’re very pleased to bring ultra-rapid, ultra-convenient EV charging to Chesterfield and to have expanded our network in the Midlands.

“We’re on a mission to roll out reliable chargers to communities nationwide that need them, and this location will provide market-goers and local residents with future-proofed, ultra-rapid charging.

“The UK needs to transition to cleaner transport, and ensuring we have the infrastructure to support this shift is critical to our environmental goals.

“Other landowners and local authorities should take note. As more and more people choose to drive EVs, they’ll naturally gravitate to destinations where they can conveniently charge their car whilst shopping.”

Ann Fomukong-Boden, Destination Chesterfield Board Member said: “The opening of the new charging hub on Saltergate is welcome news for our town, as residents and businesses look to make more sustainable choices.

“Having this site in the town centre will give EV users the opportunity to pop into local shops, cafes and restaurants too, providing a boost to our high street businesses.”

For those wanting to use the site, its full address is 85 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1JR.

During last month’s World Environment Day, businesses in Chesterfield’s network of Chesterfield Champions showcased how they are transitioning to a more sustainable future. Find out more here.

Chair’s Blog: “I encourage you to experience the vibrancy of Chesterfield”

As I walk through Chesterfield town centre, I feel a sense of pride. High streets today throughout the country face well-documented challenges, yet Chesterfield has navigated these with remarkable resilience.

Our independent stores create experiences that make customers feel like friends and keep them coming back. For instance, Street Spirit hosts tasting events for whisky, gin, and rum connoisseurs, while Geeks Headquarters draws competitors from across the UK and Europe for its tournaments. These unique businesses are examples of what sets Chesterfield apart from other towns.

Our strong community spirit is attracting vibrant new businesses to our high streets. Over 25 businesses have invested in Chesterfield town centre in the past year. Hotpod Yoga and Bottle & Thyme have rejuvenated the Elder Way development, offering more reasons to visit the town. Additionally, more homes are being developed in the heart of Chesterfield, revitalising historic high streets. Projects like the renovation of Burlington House and the old Post Office building provide excellent urban living spaces that are just a short walk from nature.

Chesterfield’s cherished green spaces, including Queen’s Park in the town centre, further enhance the quality of life for residents. These areas, hosting events such as the Chesterfield Children’s Festival and the BRM Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, are integral to the community’s heartbeat. Our food and drink scene boasts a variety of independent pubs, bars, and restaurants, extending into areas like Brampton and Whittington Moor. Whether you prefer local produce or exotic cuisines, Chesterfield offers plenty of dining choices.

Significant revitalisation works are set to begin in Chesterfield town centre. This includes modernising our historic market with brighter stalls and better infrastructure and making the town more accessible with new paving and lighting. A dedicated events space in New Square will bring more events and people to Chesterfield.

We’ve seen from the success of this year’s events that there is a demand for unique experiences in the heart of our town. The 1940s market allowed families to get face to face with a real-life spitfire, immersing themselves in a slice of history. The Peddler Market sees foodies indulging in unique street food, enjoying quality time with friends and family. It goes to show that if you provide entertainment and experiences, people will come. This footfall in turn attracts more businesses to our evolving town centre.
