Chesterfield reveals plans to create a successful post digital high street

Chesterfield has the raw ingredients to adapt and thrive in the face of the national ‘retail apocalypse,’ claims the new owner of the town’s Vicar Lane Shopping Centre, ALTERIS.

“People still want shops, but,” said Bert Broadhead, director of ALTERIS, “curating them better and creating a personalised experience for town centre visitors is the key to a successful post digital high street.”

Mr Broadhead was speaking at the town’s popular annual Celebrate Chesterfield event, organised by Destination Chesterfield, and held on Wednesday 20 March at the Winding Wheel.

The property fund company now has ambitious plans to transform the town’s Vicar Lane Shopping Centre which it bought out of administration last month. It plans to create ‘a new town centre retail model for the post e-commerce world’.

He added: “Chesterfield is already ahead of many town centres in the UK in terms of delivering a town centre experience to visitors. People no longer want identical, faceless town centres. They want a variety and mix of shops – both chain and independent stores as well as events which can engage the whole family.”

Plans to develop Vicar Lane have been driven using Facebook, which ALTERIS is using to engage the local community and help them inform the redevelopment of the shopping centre.

Colour, seating, events and high speed internet are all set to be introduced to Vicar Lane Shopping Centre over the next six months. ALTERIS has also identified independent retailers as being key to the future success of the shopping centre.

Proposed Vicar Lane Improvements

Appealing to independent retailers attending the packed event, Bert added: “We want to work with local, independent retailers and have made a number of units available with short term flexible leases to support them.” Work on the new look Vicar Lane will start later this year.

Supporting the drive to regenerate Chesterfield town centre, Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council revealed that the council will be submitting an application to the government’s Future High Streets Fund to sustain and grow footfall on the high street. As part of the funding bid, Chesterfield Borough Council plans to introduce universal Wi-Fi provision across the town centre.

He said: “Our retail occupancy levels are holding up well – 92 per cent compared to 88 per cent nationally, however, it’s a journey and we need to keep going.”

Huw explained: “UK shopping habits have changed and Chesterfield is responding well to this in the town centre masterplan by encouraging more people to live within the town centre and create that all important footfall and buzz. We want to make Chesterfield town centre a very desirable place to live, work, play and do business.”

Last year the council approved plans to convert the former magistrates court into 32 apartments, create 10 apartments at 1-3 Knifesmithgate, demolish the former headquarters of North East Derbyshire District Council to make way for 64 retirement homes, and convert the historic building at 87 New Square into nine luxury apartments.

Celebrate Chesterfield, now in its ninth year, is one of the biggest and most hotly anticipated business events in the area. This year the free breakfast event attracted nearly 300 delegates.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “We must not underestimate the power of town centre living to increase footfall to enable us to adapt to the changing face of retail.

“Chesterfield is a town of opportunity and we have the partners and collaboration in place to drive forward our ambitions to not only deliver our current development plans but also attract further investment.”

The University of Derby was this year’s headline sponsor with Central Technology and Markham Vale – Derbyshire’s flagship regeneration scheme, as associate sponsors.

Specsavers is once again supporting Comic Relief and the store in Chesterfield is getting in on the act by selling funny frames which are sure to raise a smile.

It is the third Red Nose Day that Specsavers has supported the charity by launching the frames in store, with this year’s red glasses jester theme in keeping with the charity’s comic ethos. Since 2015, Specsavers stores have raised £848,000 and have pledged to raise £250,000 this year in their quest to break the £1 million mark.

This will be done through the sale of the Comic Relief frames which cost just £2, with 100% of the proceeds going to the charity. They will be available to buy in stores and, for the first time, the Comic Relief website.

Vicki Bainbridge, Retail Director at Specsavers Chesterfield says: ‘Our glasses this year are fantastic and we hope everyone gets into the fundraising spirit by picking up a pair in store and help us smash our £1 million fundraising mark. We are really proud to support Comic Relief and all the good causes they fund.’

Catherine Cottrell, fundraising and partnerships executive director at Comic Relief, adds: ‘We’re so pleased Specsavers is continuing to support us for the third year. ALTERIS announces plans to transform Vicar Lane

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre has unveiled plans to transform the centre following its acquisition earlier this year by ALTERIS.

Purpose-built in 2001 as an open-air scheme, with iconic views through to the famous crooked spire of Chesterfield’s Church of St. Mary and All Saints, the centre draws over 3 million visitors annually.

After five years in receivership, ALTERIS identified an opportunity to create a thriving retail-focused asset in a historic town centre, with one of the UK’s strongest retail heritages, based around the country’s largest open-air market.

ALTERIS is formulating a masterplan vision for Vicar Lane in conjunction with architects Leslie Jones which will see St. James Square become a much more animated focal point within the scheme and re-energise a key meeting point for shoppers within the town.

Bert Broadhead, Director at ALTERIS said: “We’ve identified huge potential in Vicar Lane as it sits in a prime position within a thriving market town. We see a great opportunity to re-imagine the scheme making it more of a centre of gravity for Chesterfield – with enhanced F&B and leisure to complement the existing retail. We also have plans to enhance the public realm to make Vicar Lane a more uplifting place to be.”

“There is much talk of High Streets being in decline at the moment, but this isn’t the case everywhere. We spotted an opportunity with Vicar Lane where we can build upon a positive local catchment, strong asset potential and the prospect of economic growth within Chesterfield – not least via the planned HS2 station a stone’s throw from the centre. After many years of inertia, the centre offers us a blank canvas on which we can build.”

“We will be aiming to work with both national and independent operators, harnessing the latest technologies as well as traditional retail practices to help create a retail experience for the modern age, right in the heart of historic Chesterfield.”

Bert Broadhead will be speaking more about the plans for Vicar Lane at the upcoming Celebrate Chesterfield event on the 20th March, where local businesses come together to celebrate the town and hear about local regeneration work.

Technology is also a key factor and ALTERIS is investing in cutting-edge services which will help make the customer experience more user-friendly and fulfilling.

Tenants at Vicar Lane, which is currently 94% leased, include TJ Hughes, H&M, River Island, JD Sports, New Look, Superdrug, Deichmann, Waterstones, CEX, O2, 3 Store and Holland & Barrett, as well as local brands Quoozies and Ministry.

Chesterfield announces its first Retail Apprentice of the Year

The first Retail Apprentice of the Year award was part of the town’s long running annual Chesterfield Retail Awards. It was introduced to the category line-up by the event organiser Destination Chesterfield to support the Apprentice Town initiative and highlight the importance of apprentices within the retail sector.

Chloe Hall (18), a Level 2 hair and beauty apprentice who works at The Therapy Lounge in Hasland, Chesterfield, is the first apprentice to win the brand-new award, which was also sponsored by the Apprentice Town initiative led by Chesterfield Borough Council. Chloe’s employer, The Therapy Lounge, was also named as the Hair and Beauty Business of the Year at the awards.

Last year, Chesterfield became the first town in the UK to declare itself an Apprentice Town – demonstrating its commitment to growing the future and careers of young people alongside business and the economy by retaining and developing young talent in the town, attracting more employers to invest there.

There are currently more than 4,000 people currently participating in apprenticeships in Chesterfield. It is hoped the Apprentice Town initiative will encourage young people, parents and businesses to think ‘Apprenticeship First’.

Chloe, a former Bolsover School pupil, commented on her award win: “I was really shocked to win. It’s great to be recognised and it really has opened up a lot more new opportunities for me. I’m really enjoying my time here at The Therapy Lounge, especially carrying out treatments on clients and seeing the end result of that treatment.”

She added: “I’d recommend an apprenticeship over everything. It gives you so much real life working experience. With an apprenticeship, it leads you onto your next chapter and often cuts out that step in between.”

In addition to Apprentice of the Year, the Chesterfield Retail Awards also recognised the Apprentice Employer of the Year. The award, which was sponsored by Learning Unlimited (The Chesterfield College Group), was won by Ashgate Hospicecare.

Tracie Holocuk, Manager of one of Ashgate Hospicecare’s stores, said: “Having an apprentice in our business has made a huge difference to us. I would recommend it.”

Specsavers named as Chesterfield’s Retailer of the Year

Specsavers has been named as Chesterfield’s favourite store. The Burlington Street branch of the national opticians’ chain was crowned Retailer of the Year at the 2018 Chesterfield Retail Awards on Wednesday 13 June.

Commenting on the award win, Gareth Webster, Retail Director at Specsavers, said:-

“Winning Retailer of the Year is a proud moment for us all. Word of mouth recommendation is the bedrock of our business and this award embodies that. It means the world to us.

“Even though we’re a chain, each store is invidually owned and we try to personalise our store and service. We pride ourselves on treating customers like our family and this award recognises the personal care and attention we give to them all.”

In addition to scooping the top award, Specsavers was also named as National/Multiple Retailer of the Year at the annual awards.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield, the award ceremony recognises the very best shops, stores and market stalls in and around Chesterfield. The winners are all nominated by shoppers with the eventual winners being chosen by an independent panel of judges.

The Retailer of the Year title was just one of 15 awards presented to 11 businesses at the fifth annual Retail Awards ceremony, which was hosted by Peak FM’s breakfast show presenters Ricky and Becky.

Other businesses to celebrate multiple award wins at the fifth annual Chesterfield Retail Awards included Adorn Jewellers. The independent jewellers, which is based in The Shambles, scooped three titles on the night, including the Independent Retailer of the Year award. The company has recently opened a second store in Bakewell, however remains firmly committed to Chesterfield where it has been based since 2010.

Owner of Adorn Jewellers, Laura Jo Owen said:-

“We are thrilled with our hat trick of wins and so proud to be part of the awards. Chesterfield has an amazing retail scene and is a hotbed of independent retailers which we’re privileged to be part of. Since the business opened in 2010 we have been incredibly supported by both the retail community and our wonderful customers.”

As well as established businesses, the Retail Awards also recognised the town’s newest retailers. Ladies clothing boutique Dotique, based on Chatsworth Road, scooped the title of Best Newcomer. The store opened its doors in November last year after taking over and transforming the Johnson’s Hardware Store.

Owner of Dotique, Dorothy Robinson said:-

“I am completely overwhelmed, shocked and grateful to win the award. A year ago I was teaching in a school in Alderley Edge, and now I have had the chance to renovate one of the most fabulous buildings in Chesterfield, open this fantastic shop and be surrounded by the most amazing customers.”

And it wasn’t just businesses recognised for their contribution to Chesterfield’s retail sector; apprentices were too.

Apprentice beatuty therapist Chloe Hall (17) from Duckmanton, who works at The Therapy Lounge in Hasland was named the Retail Apprentice of the Year.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Deputy Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, added:-

“The 2018 Chesterfield Retail Awards has been our best yet and were, once again, an excellent opportunity for us to celebrate the town’s retail sector. All of Chesterfield’s retail businesses, and the people working within them, play an important part in contributing to the local economy.

“I was particularly pleased to see new businesses, like Dotique, picking up awards and also to see Chloe Hall from the Therapy Lounge receive the Apprentice of the Year award, which shows how the Apprentice Town initiative to deliver more apprenticeships in Chesterfield is succeeding.”

Exciting new opportunity for young people with learning disabilities

The new Fairplay Gift Emporium opened its doors following an official opening in May 2018.

The Chair of Fairplay, Cllr Peter Barr and Steve Shipp, MDS Ultra Marathon runner and Fairplay supporter, officially opened the new shop at Chesterfield Market Hall, alongside Fairplay young people and staff.

The aim of the Gift Emporium is to give young people the opportunity to learn valuable employment skills in a safe, supportive environment.

Fairplay has looked for suitable premises for many months and jumped at the offer of unit 21 on the side of the market hall. A grant from the National Lottery Awards for All has helped to get the project off the ground.

‘’The shop is in a great location as there is a lot of footfall around the market hall. We hope that our lovely range of gifts will encourage people to shop with us and support the young people in this exciting new venture’’.

‘’There is a lovely range of products for sale including cards, scarves, unique prints by Dave Draws based in Manchester as well local artists.’’
