Chesterfield Escape Rooms among the best in the UK according to Tripadvisor

Chesterfield Escape Rooms is celebrating success as the attraction has been listed among the top 10 best escape room attractions in the UK, according to reviews website TripAdvisor.

The business has shot up the rankings since its opening in Summer 2021, following hundreds of positive reviews on the site. At the time of writing, the escape room sits at number 5 in the UK rankings. You can see the list here.

Expressing his delight at the news, owner Nick Hogan said: “Living and working in a small town that encourages visitors, customer’s feedback and word of mouth referrals are so important. Trip advisor is also a huge area of interest for visitors to assess what to do when visiting the area so this was a key focus from Day 1.

“The team have been brilliant in ensuring that customers are made aware of our objective to be a top ranked Escape Room and its only with their help and support in providing on line feedback we have managed to achieve our goal. The team have to ensure they deliver a quality product every time and they have achieved that!

Nick also added that the ranking on TripAdvisor is positive news for the town as a whole, adding to Chesterfield’s visitor economy offer: “We can tell from our booking system that approximately 35-40% of our players are from outside of Chesterfield, with a growing number travelling in from Nottingham, Sheffield, Derby and even further afield! These players are using the Escape Rooms as one of the things to do in Chesterfield but then go onto to increase spend elsewhere in the local vicinity.

“There are 790 different locations offering over 2500 Escape Rooms in the UK so we are overwhelmed with the success to date. It was a real pinch yourself moment when we got into the top 5 as our target was to be a top 50 venue.

“Our next target is to consolidate our top 5 position and then try and build on it. We have a new game going into construction in February / March ready for Easter so with further support from our customers, we maybe be able to go a little higher. The visitor economy is so important to the town so the more attractions we get the better and we are delighted to be able to help out.”

Two other business have also opened in and around the Escape Rooms. Chesterfield Virtual Reality offers an arcade approach to Virtual Reality (for up to 4 players) and also offers VR Escape Rooms. Game Zone has also opened on the town, providing a mix of retro and modern day gaming in a social environment.

Community partnership project invites businesses to shape new consortium

A partnership project between the University of Derby and Derbyshire Voluntary Action is inviting Chesterfield-based businesses to an online focus group to assist in shaping a new business consortium.

Community Chesterfield, which works to strengthen local communities by bringing the University and local voluntary groups together, is set to launch a consortium to bring these same benefits to the business community.

To help structure the consortium, Community Chesterfield is hosting an exclusive focus group to give businesses from Chesterfield and the surrounding areas with more than 50 employees the opportunity to discuss how the new scheme could benefit them and establish new and mutually beneficial relationships across the region.

The consortium, which will be launched in the summer of 2022, will enable a select group of businesses, academics and voluntary sector organisations to transform the skills and knowledge in the region and strengthen our communities.

The consortium is being designed to enable the exploration of new opportunities to collaborate and work across the voluntary and business sectors, helping businesses to meet staff development and wider company needs, including a focus on corporate social responsibility and employee health and wellbeing, as well as creating positive stories to share.

Jenny Raschbauer project manager at Community Chesterfield, said: “Community Chesterfield is a polit project, so we are in the fortunate position of being able to come up with ways to further achieve our goal of strengthening the local voluntary and community sector here in Chesterfield.”

“The goal of the business consortium is to create a network of cross-sector individuals and organisations who can work collaboratively to bring create opportunities that benefit all parties, whilst ultimately having a positive impact with the Chesterfield area.”

“The benefits to businesses of the consortium will also be rigorously evaluated and assessed by University of Derby members, so participants will have evidential data about how working alongside community organisations in this way has been an advantage to them. It really is a win win situation.”

Derbyshire Voluntary Action looks to recruit new trustees

Derbyshire Voluntary Action (DVA) is looking to recruit new Trustees to its Board to broaden the sectors represented by its membership.

The organisation, representing more than 420 voluntary and community sector groups across Derbyshire, wishes to create a robust strategic plan to build more successful cross-sector collaborations, engage with businesses and improve its financial sustainability.

DVA’s Trustees work collaboratively and strive to provide the charity with clear leadership and effective governance. Newly recruited trustees must be willing to play a crucial role in supporting DVA to move forward and build on the organisation’s successes.

The key roles of the Trustees include contributing to board papers and being available to contribute to Board sub-groups, such as finance and HR, supporting staff and providing insight and guidance on key issues, new initiatives and new business/funding opportunities.

Trustees also:

• Actively contribute to the Board’s leadership role in providing strategic direction to the organisation by setting overall policy, defining goals and evaluating performance.
• Ensure that DVA works within the spirit of its governing document and complies with charity law and any other applicable legislation or regulations.
• Ensure that DVA pursues its charitable objects – as defined in its governing document and its vision and mission – as described in its business plan.
• Ensure that DVA uses its resources exclusively to pursue its organisational strategy, business plan and objectives.
• Safeguard the good name and values of DVA.
• Ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
• Support the chief executive in their role and monitor their performance against organisational strategy and the business plan.

DVA is particularly interested in hearing from people who are willing to share their experience and skills in the following areas; business development, marketing and brand management, finance, voluntary and community sector group development, lean management and digital skills.

New financial facility confirmed for Custom Solar

Custom Solar has announced that the company has secured £4.8m in new lending from Virgin Money to accelerate its growth ambitions.

Based in Chesterfield, the business is behind the largest rooftop commercial installation in the country, fitting 21,000 solar panels at the Port of Hull, which will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1,400 tonnes every year.

The company has grown a pipeline of future projects and as such has looked towards further growth opportunities and with financial support from Virgin Money, it has given the business flexibility to target bigger designs and installations across its corporate and public sector customers.

Custom Solar was founded in 2011 and over the last 10 years the team has grown to 30 people, who travel to customers all over the UK. With the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, it’s seeing an increase in customers moving towards sustainable business improvements and taking advantage of the incentives available when investing in renewable energy.

Chesterfield Borough Council backs sustainable electricity bill

Chesterfield Borough Council has unanimously approved a motion that supports the Local Electricity Bill.

The motion means the council will support the bill when applied to renewable electricity and will also write to local MPs to encourage them to support the bill in parliament. The Local Electricity Bill empowers community groups, local businesses and councils to become local energy suppliers, which aims to help ensure that the supply of renewable energy across the UK can be increased.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, deputy leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “It was important for the full council to support this motion and for us to support the Local Electricity Bill in principle, because we all agree that we must reduce our carbon emissions in order to minimise the effects of climate change. We are already doing lots to reduce emissions in Chesterfield but energy remains one of the most significant areas to decarbonise.

“I hope our local MPs will listen to our motion and support this bill in parliament. It could help revolutionise electricity supply and create new local networks of renewable energy generation, which is essential to helping reduce emissions both in Chesterfield and across the UK.”

Currently to sell electricity there is a high cost because of complex grid balancing codes and network agreements, which is a barrier to entry for small local electricity generation.

The Local Electricity Bill aims to remove this barrier, making it financially viable for electricity generators to sell directly to local people.

The bill would establish a Right to Local Supply which would make the setup and running costs of selling renewable electricity to local people proportionate to the size of the supply company.

Provided the carbon cap on electricity generation is low enough it could lead to increasing the supply of local renewable electricity which could help the UK meet its climate change targets.

The council will now write to local MPs to encourage them to support this bill in parliament.

Grassmoor Memorial Parkland to honour those lost to COVID-19

The first steps towards creating a lasting memorial parkland to remember and honour local people who died from COVID-19 and pay tribute to the work of the NHS have been taken with the planting of the first trees.

A ceremony held earlier this month (Wednesday, 8th December) saw Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis and Civic Chairman Councillor Jean Wharmby help to plant a Japanese flowering cherry tree at Grassmoor Country Park near Chesterfield. An avenue of oak trees has already been planted at the site.

The ceremonial planting was attended by multi-faith representatives, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment Councillor Carolyn Renwick, an NHS representative, members of the Friends of Grassmoor Country Park and our countryside service staff. Attendees made short speeches about the effects of COVID-19 on their communities and welcomed the start of work on the memorial parkland.

Councillor Barry Lewis said: “The idea for the memorial parkland came from a lady who contacted me during the pandemic and had lost loved ones to COVID-19 and wanted somewhere to remember them and celebrate their lives.

“From that conversation the idea grew, and what we will have as the trees grow is a beautiful, green, peaceful space where people will be able to sit, walk, reflect and remember.

“I’m incredibly honoured to have been part of the ceremony to mark the first trees being planted and very pleased we have been able to make this happen.”

Council Civic Chairman Councillor Jean Wharmby said: “This has been an incredibly poignant and moving event to officially mark the start of our memorial parkland, which will grow and grow.

“So many of us have been affected by COVID-19 and sadly many have experienced the loss of someone close to them.“While we know the pandemic is far from over, we are beginning the process of recovery and healing, and the start of the memorial parkland is part of that process. In years to come people will be able to visit this area of Grassmoor Country Park and remember and celebrate the lives of those who were lost. It already feels like a truly special place.”

The county council agreed the creation of the memorial parkland in September and it has been supported by the Friends of Grassmoor Country Park.

The memorial parkland will be designed in keeping with the character of the local landscape and will feature a native wildflower meadow with an avenue of trees including wild cherry, rowan, hazel, birch, hawthorn, dogwood, oak, wych elm, willow and aspen. These trees have been selected for their spiritual meaning and to give displays of blossom in the spring and fruit for birds and other wildlife in the summer and autumn. They will be complemented by smaller, native shrub species.

A walkway to a memorial feature is also proposed, which will be made accessible to all.

The ceremonial tree planting marks the first phase of work to develop the memorial parkland area, and in time the newly created area will become a location for people to visit, spend time and remember loved ones lost during the pandemic. Further work to install seating to provide an area for quiet contemplation overlooking the parkland as it matures would follow in the second phase of the project.

Friends of Grassmoor Country Park have agreed to help the council with the planting and maintenance of the memorial parkland which will contribute to the authority’s target of planting a million trees by 2030.

Grassmoor Country Park is a popular country park that was developed on a reclaimed colliery site. It is easily accessible from Junction 29 of the M1 and the A617 and can be visited by bus.

Hot Tub Award Success for Superior Wellness

Chesterfield based Superior Wellness were successful in winning four awards at the prestigious UK Pool and Spa awards, held on 13 December 2021 in Birmingham.

The first accolade was for International Team of the Year – the team has doubled in size in the last 12 months and between them can speak six different languages. International sales account for 13% of total sales vs 3% the prior year highlighting the sheer success and growth. The team are focusing on further expansion in Europe as well as the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The After Sales and Logistics team have also created new roles to support international customers including a French speaking customer service advisor.

The second award was for Best Marketing Initiative – awarded for the Channel 5 documentary ‘Hot Tub Brits – More Bubbles Please!’ which featured Superior Wellness. The marketing team also received a Gold Award for the Superior Wellness rebrand, the 10-year anniversary campaign and the partnership with Fibromyalgia Action UK. Sarah Elphick, Head of Marketing said: “The team have transformed the marketing during the last 12 months and continue to take it to the next level. I am very proud of what we have achieved so far and excited about 2022.”

The third award was for Spa Supplier of the Year; over the past year the partner network has grown to over 200 partners. Gareth Ward, Sales Director said: “It has been an incredible year for our business and industry as a whole and we are delighted that our efforts and dedication has been recognised with this award win. A huge thank to all our partners and suppliers for their continued support.”

And last but certainly not least the evening ended with Rob Carlin, Managing Director winning the prestigious Special Achievement Award. The award marked the 10-year anniversary of Superior Wellness.

Rob Carlin said: “It has been an incredibly special year for Superior Wellness, which is why the Special Achievement Award is so fitting in this particular year. We moved into our new 130,000 sq ft head office and warehouse in March. The move coincided with the ten-year anniversary on 28 April; which was a huge milestone for the whole team.

“It is a great honour for us all to end the year with the award success, the team have been working hard all year and it’s great to see that all of their hard work has been recognised. I am extremely proud of the whole team.”

The entrants were awarded gold, silver or bronze standard in the competition covering both home and public pool and spa facilities in a contest that attracted on-line votes and votes from judges, before being scrutinised by an independent jury.

More than 100 new jobs on the way at Markham Vale

Sustainable packaging firm Smurfit Kappa and home furnishings company Gallery Direct are the latest businesses to get keys to new premises at Derbyshire County Council’s and HBD’s flagship regeneration site, Markham Vale.

Founded in 1934, international paper-based packaging specialists Smurfit Kappa is set to create up to 20 new jobs with their expansion to another unit on the site where they have been based for 6 years.The eco-friendly company sources almost all their raw materials from their own paper mills and their products are 100% renewable and produced sustainably helping customers reduce their environmental footprint.The firm’s new base will be used for warehouse and distribution across the UK.

Mark Hawkins, General Manager at Smurfit Kappa said: “We moved into a new state of the art purpose-built site back in 2015 as one of the first occupants on the Markham Vale development.

“Since then the site has grown to a turnover of over £40 million and recruited over 65 people locally, due to the growth of the site and Smurfit Kappa’s own expansion in the UK we now require a purpose built distribution centre which the new building gives us, being perfectly located next to junction 29A of the M1.

“This new venture will create further jobs for the area and give people a great career opportunity working within Smurfit Kappa.”

Craig Handley, Customer Service and Logistics Director at Smurfit Kappa said: “With over 12,500 pallet spaces, the new Markham Vale North distribution facility will complement our existing production units in both Markham Vale and Chesterfield offering both excellent just in time customer deliveries.

“The unit is positioned ideally near the motorway access allowing the distribution of goods for our customers in the far north and south. We are undertaking an employment drive from within the local community for warehouse FLT drivers who will be using state of the art new VNA trucks.”

Established in 1973, family-run business, Gallery Direct is a leading British based designer, manufacturer and worldwide distributor of furniture, home decor and accessories.

The company’s new northern base is set to create up to 90 new jobs and will be used for packing, warehousing, and a distribution hub with space to expand further for a new state-of-the-art showroom.

Peter Delaney, managing director at The Gallery Direct Group said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have secured this prestigious facility in an amazing northern location. The fact is that this new property, combined with our southern warehouse and head office, improves further our distribution and operational capacity.

“We will be able to serve 96% of our clients’ requirements with one day delivery times, utilising our own home distribution fleet.”

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, Councillor Tony King, said:

“We are delighted to welcome Gallery Direct to Markham Vale and see the expansion of Smurfit Kappa.

“Our central location makes Markham Vale an ideal distribution base for companies looking to cut their mileage and reduce their carbon footprint as well as meet needs of their clients more quickly.

“Smurfit Kappa’s focus on sustainability and innovation aligns with our own ambitions for attracting cleaner, greener growth.

“And we’re pleased that we’ve been able to come up with the goods for Gallery Direct which will soon be serving customers in the north of the country from Derbyshire instead of down south.

“The fact that between them they bring 110 new jobs is excellent news for the local economy too.”

NHS recruitment event to take place in Chesterfield in the new year

A recruitment event is set to take place in the new year, showcasing the opportunities available within the NHS across Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Healthcare is a specialist provider of children’s, learning disability, substance misuse and mental health services – across community, inpatient and other settings. The Trust is actively looking to recruit Band 5 and 6 registered mental health and learning disability nurses, as well as occupational therapists.

To assist with this a series of recruitment events around the county are being planned, with the first one taking place from 10.00am-3.00pm on 15 January in Chesterfield at the Technique Stadium. There will be staff available to chat to about working for the Trust and the opportunities that are available. To make the recruitment process more effective and efficient, applications will be handled on the day, with interviews and conditional offers being made at the same time.

The Trust employs more than 2,800 staff providing services from several community and inpatient settings across the whole of Derbyshire. Across the county and the city, it serves a combined population of approximately one million people.  The Trust is looking for enthusiastic, talented and compassionate qualified staff to provide quality children’s, mental health, learning disability and substance misuse services to the people of Derbyshire.

Print Digital Media invests in huge new printer

Chesterfield-based printing company, Print Digital Media has made a significant investment, with the firm investing in equipment which will enable it to print 400,000 sheets per day.

The new printing machine has several impressive features, including an innovative UV curing system which provides instant dry product and delivers shorter turnaround times. The new printer is also better for the environment and safer to use; it does not discharge ozone, does not use powder, is virtually odourless and uses 30% less electricity.

For over 40 years Print Digital Media has used knowledge and expertise, providing a bespoke range of products. The company specialises in brochures, catalogues, corporate stationery, packaging and event programmes. It prints roughly 20,000 football programmes every week for clubs across the UK, and closer to home it provides the pre-match programmes for Chesterfield FC & Derbyshire County Cricket Club.

Company Director, Richard Musgrove said: “Machines with this capacity don’t come cheap and it was a scary moment placing the order but there are so many benefits and as we recently extended our range into small box packaging, it gives us the capacity to double current volumes.

Heathcotes opens new supported living in Chesterfield

Care provider, Heathcotes Group, has opened a new provision of independent supported living properties in Chesterfield for adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs.

The company’s Brendon House service features four self-contained apartments for individuals who are stepping down from a hospital or full-time residential care setting to improve their independent living skills.

Each property offers spacious accommodation with its own lounge, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. The two-storey building includes two apartments and communal space on each floor as well as separate space for an on-site team of around 10 support workers providing 24-hour care support when needed.

Heathcotes’ Director of Business Development, Natalia Lysiuk, said: “The opening of Brendon House is another step in the expansion of our enhanced supported living services, which we have developed to complement our full-time residential care provision. We have worked closely with Derbyshire County Council on this development, which has been a real success.

“For the people we support, the type of accommodation we offer at Brendon House represents the next stage in the care pathway towards full independence. It is also suitable for individuals who require a single-person service due to their complexity and inability to live with others.

“Brendon House follows our successful model for independent supported living, providing a homely environment which encourages and facilitates the development of daily living skills. The setting also naturally fosters a sense of community and social inclusion amongst residents, progressing hand-in-hand with their increasing independence.

“Our on-site team is available to assist whenever required and each resident has a designated support worker for ongoing support. Having established a range of supported living provision in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, we are now looking to significantly increase this type of service and accommodation in the East Midlands.”
