Several businesses in the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have been shortlisted in the unLTD Business Awards.
The inaugural unLTD Business Awards celebrate the best Start Ups, SMEs and Entrepreneurs in the South Yorkshire region who are helping to drive the local economy forward.
Chesterfield-based CMP Legal, a niche commercial law firm that specialises in corporate, commercial, dispute resolution and employment law has been shortlisted as a Finalist for the Legal Company of the Year Award at the ceremony.

The winners will be announced at the unLTD Business Awards on 30th November 2023 at the Peddler Warehouse in Sheffield. The awards will be hosted by The Chase’s Paul Sinha and will feature entertainment from local musicians, DJs and circus performers.

Chesterfield Football Club is celebrating its part in raising the profile of our town, following the club’s recent televised fixture in the Emirates FA Cup.
More than half a million people tuned in to ITV 1 for the game on Sunday, 5th November which saw the Spireites pick up a 1-0 win against Portsmouth, a team which currently sits two divisions above Chesterfield.
There was an average figure of 557,000 viewers for the match, with the audience peaking at 798,000. The coverage also provided many of the town’s businesses which sponsor the club with national exposure.
Commenting on the benefits of such high-profile media coverage, Dom Stevens, Destination Chesterfield manager, said: “It was wonderful to see the Spireites triumph in front of a national television audience, and the coverage certainly helped to put Chesterfield on the map.
“The club continues to play a major role in attracting visitors to our town from across the UK, bolstering our independent businesses.

Two businesses in the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have taken home prestigious accolades at East Midlands Chamber’s Derbyshire Business Awards.
The ceremony recognised East Midlands Chamber members across 13 categories, ranging from Excellence in Innovation and Environmental Impact at organisational level through to individual honours for Entrepreneur of the Year and Apprentice of the Year, in addition to the overall Business of the Year winner.
Chesterfield’s EcoTech Engineers won the award for Outstanding Growth (Sponsored by Amazon), while Rose Cottage Doggy Day Care took home the accolade for Excellence in Innovation (sponsored by Rolls-Royce).
Finalists, chosen by a judging panel of the Chamber’s senior leadership and board of directors, as well as sponsors, discovered their fate during a gala dinner attended by 350 people at Derbyshire County Cricket Club.

A raffle was held to raise funds for the Chamber Charitable Fund, which comprises president Stuart Dawkins’ three chosen charities for this year – Foundation Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation, and Nottinghamshire Community Foundation.

Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield have once again partnered to launch the annual Christmas in Chesterfield campaign, promoting the exciting festive fun, delightful dining, and unique gifts which can be found in the local area.
Councillor Kate Sarvent, portfolio holder for the town centre and visitor economy, said: “We have a packed entertainment schedule organised in Chesterfield this winter, with many of the events being free or low-cost to come along to. We understand that the cost of living is still affecting everyone, particularly as the colder months are upon us, so as a council, we want to do all we can to provide you with things to do over the festive season that won’t cost a fortune.”

A Festival of Christmas Trees – at St Mary’s and All Saints Church (Crooked Spire) from Saturday 18 November to Sunday 3 December.
Visitors are invited to come and see over 100 colourful Christmas trees decorated by local people, community groups and businesses, including WI, scout and guide groups, schools and high street stores and venues. This is a free event, and one not to be missed.

Santa’s Grotto at the Assembly Rooms, Market Hall from Sunday 19 November to Sunday 24 December – at various times (see website for more details on dates, times and how to book).
Families are invited to visit Santa in his Chesterfield Grotto and share their Christmas wishes. Each child will be given a wrapped gift. Tickets are on sale now and are priced at £7.50 per child.
There will also be six relaxed sessions for children with learning disabilities or sensory and communication disorders. The flashing lights will be off, background lighting will be increased and children will have a little longer to meet with Santa.
Chesterfield Christmas Lights Switch On and Market – Sunday 19 November, from noon to 6pm in Chesterfield town centre.
Join us to turn on the Christmas lights across the town centre. There will be a stage show to entertain the crowds, market stalls to visit and the opportunity to meet this year’s special guest – Paddington™.
Paddington™ will be appearing in Rykneld Square at 12noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.

A Christmas Carol Concert will be taking place outside Revolution House on Thursday 7 December at 6.30pm where you will be able to see the Holymoorside Brass Band in the garden for traditional, festive carol singing.
The John Varley ll will be sailing from Tapton Lock (S41 7JB) and the Madeline from Hollingwood Hub (S43 2PF). Here you can take to the water this Christmas to meet Santa on Chesterfield Canal. There will be two different boats in operation.

The Chesterfield Santa Fun Run features participants dressed in Santa suits running around the park, with a 1500m race and another one of 5k. Chesterfield Santa Fun Run is Supporting local charities, Ashgate Hospice and CSALS.

Organisers of the Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K have confirmed the event is set to come back to the town next year and will take place on its new Spring date of Sunday 24th March 2024.
The route will start and finish in Queens Park and will be centred on the heart of Chesterfield, taking in major landmarks such as the town’s famous crooked spire. It will also feature service and cheer stations on the course and start at 10 am.
Full entry into the 2024 Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k will cost £25, with Early Bird entry priced at £20 and available until 30 November.
As its name suggests, the Redbrik Foundation is once again the title partner of the 10k event, alongside other charity partners Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Cavendish Cancer Care. To date, the event has raised over £220,000 for a number of charities and good causes.
The Redbrik Foundation is a charitable trust which supports a number of local organisations each year, primarily seeking to enhance the lives of children and young people, the elderly or vulnerable and those with disabilities.
John Timms, Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k Event Director, said: “We are delighted to be bringing the event back to Chesterfield for a third time in Spring next year.

Clay Cross Town Board and North East Derbyshire District Council have reached a major milestone in their proposals for the Town Deal’s Town Centre Regeneration, as Planning consent was approved by the Planning Committee on 7 November 2023.
The approval covers several key elements which are:
The creation of a new Town Square which will become a public space to be used for markets, seasonal events and as a public forum.
Food and beverage and leisure units – the route from Broadleys to the public square to be lined with artisan food companies, leisure operators and cafes and restaurants.
The pedestrianisation of Market Street, creating more public space for visitors.
Repurposing an existing historic building with the aim of providing a quality food and drink offering and leisure opportunities, directly overlooking the public square.
Improving connections through the town by re-opening access between Bridge Street and Market Street.
Further work is also being undertaken by the Town Board to explore the possibility of direct access to a car park via the A61.

Chesterfield Canal Trust has announced a funding drive to create new community spaces alongside the canal in Staveley, and has received support from AVIVA.
The firm is supporting the Canal Trust’s appeal via its ‘Save Our Wild Isles Community Fund.’ As part of this, the Canal Trust has launched a Crowdfunding appeal and is encouraging people to help boost the area’s regeneration.
AVIVA will kick start the appeal with £500 and will give the Trust £2 for every £1 it raises, up to a maximum of £15,000. This means that if the Trust can raise £7,500, AVIVA will turn it into £23,000, or up to £24,500 with Gift Aid.
Restoration works will take place at Hartington. At present there is rough ground and steep slopes, but over the next 18 months a new Trans-Pennine Trail bridge and a new lock will be built, and the canal will be restored.
The Trust wants to create a great canalside environment for people and wildlife around the new bridge, giving nature a head start and creating a suitable setting for the new lock which will be built early in 2025.
It needs to raise funds for 60 Trees (some semi-mature), 200 metres of hedging, 12 benches (including four wheelchair-accessible ones), native wildflowers, signs and information boards, accessible paths and landscaping works.
The new information boards will encourage people to learn about and help tackle climate change and the planting will take this into account.

A campaign which aims to close skills gaps in Chesterfield by providing young people with tours of leading manufacturing, engineering and construction businesses is returning for the tenth time.
Made in Chesterfield has already introduced more than 3,600 young people to the prospect of a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) sectors, with more set to gain valuable insights this November.
Figures published in East Midlands Chamber’s Q3 economic survey revealed that 58% of manufacturers across the region which tried to recruit experienced problems in finding suitable staff. At the same time, Chesterfield Borough Council has forecast that 3750 people are expected to be working in the sector across the borough by 2030.
These figures outline the requirement for a strong, skilled pipeline of talented individuals to secure the future growth of these industries across the town.
During Made in Chesterfield, secondary school pupils will gain access to firms such as Weightron Bilanciai – an international firm that makes industrial weighbridges, Superior Wellness, a hot tub manufacturer listed as one of the UK’s top 50 fastest-growing businesses, and Dalton Roofing, a family-run business operating in Chesterfield’s property and construction sector.

The Destination Chesterfield Partnership has received £180,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It follows a successful funding bid by Chesterfield Borough Council, to secure £2.69 million worth of funding for local projects.
A Chesterfield-based energy broker has worked alongside a local council in the area to help reduce its energy bills.
Choice Utility worked alongside Staveley Town Council to ensure the authority wasn’t paying over the odds on its gas and electricity. The partnership shows the value of collaboration between local businesses and organisations in the town to boost the local economy.
Dan Molloy, Director at Choice Utility commented: “We worked to define the parameters of the contracts in place, as well as when they were set up and how. Some of these were auto-renewed by the supplier without STC’s knowledge.
“We also evaluated the true energy consumption, as the supplier had not recorded it correctly. Following that, we spoke to the energy supplier to understand the new energy contracts agreed. We were then able to explore options available and offer those to STC, giving our advice on what we be most cost-effective.
“After negotiating firmly with the supplier, we were able to reduce the rate to something far more palatable (saving around 60% going forward) without needing to extend the contract.”
Sabrina Doherty, Town Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer at Staveley Town Council said: “Dan from Choice Utility has been brilliant at helping us deal with a very difficult situation and uncooperative suppliers.
“He really went the extra mile for us and achieved a significant saving on our existing contracts whilst finding us the best deal for our new contracts. I can’t recommend them highly enough – they were excellent.”
The company, based in Chesterfield’s Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre is looking to further support local businesses in the area, and will be hosting a drop in session in January for businesses to discuss their energy costs in a relaxed and informal setting.

Every year lots of residents turn out to show their support and remember together as a community, I’m proud to be leading the parade this year and I look forward to seeing the many members of our community turning out to pay their respects.”

The service will be followed by a parade from St Mary and All Saints’ Church, through Burlington Street, High Street, Glumangate onto Rose Hill.
Residents and visitors are welcome to watch the parade which will be led by Chesterfield’s Mayor and Mayoress and other local dignitaries. They will be joined by members of the Armed Forces, ex-services organisations and uniformed youth organisations from Chesterfield.
Members of the public are also welcome to attend the wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial from approximately 3.30pm with the poppy cascade featuring 16,000 poppies donated by people from across the world as a backdrop.
The poppy cascade was installed on the front of the Town Hall on Tuesday 31 October by members of The Royal Engineers Association, who are the custodians of the poppies. Each year the Royal Engineers Association ensure the poppy fall’s safekeeping, making sure it is dry and safely stored and any repairs are carried out prior to their next outing.
On Friday 10 November children from schools across Chesterfield will join the Mayor and Mayoress in holding a minute silence at 11am outside the Town Hall and laying a wreath of remembrance.
Staveley Town Council will hold their annual Remembrance parade and service in Staveley on Sunday 12 November. The parade will leave Staveley Market Place at 10.30am and head for the Garden of Remembrance, where the service will take place come rain or shine at 10.45am.
Brimington Parish Council will hold their annual Remembrance parade and service in Brimington on Sunday 12 November. The parade will leave the Recreation Ground on Station Road at 1.45pm before a service in St Michael and All Angels Church at 2pm. The parade will then head to the Memorial Gates in Broom Gardens on Manor Road where there will be wreath laying and the Last Post at 3pm.
