Museum seeks Crooked Spire memories

Chesterfield Museum is appealing for memories of the Crooked Spire church for a forthcoming exhibition.

The exhibition will take place at the popular Chesterfield Borough Council run attraction this summer and will explore St Mary and All Saints’ Church as a historic building, the heart of a community and the symbol of the town.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy said:-

“People around the world recognise the Crooked Spire church as a symbol of Chesterfield.

“We would really like local people to come forward with their memories of the church but we also want to know what the spire means to the people of Chesterfield as a symbol of the town and how it has played a part in their lives.”

Anyone with memories should contact Rachel Fannen, museum collections officer, on 01246 345722, email rachel.fannen@chesterfield.gov.uk or call into the museum during the normal opening times.

Chesterfield Museum is open each Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

10-minute activity challenge issued to Chesterfield’s workplaces

A New Year campaign with a difference aims to spark hundreds more people across Chesterfield into taking up an active lifestyle in 2017.

The Active Lunch Challenge will help people to complete ‘bite size’ chunks of exercise of just 10 minutes in and around their working day.

Participants can then log their progress online, set personal targets and check their progress alongside their colleagues – with spot prizes for taking part providing even more of a motivation.

Rachael Dyer, Sport Development Officer for Derbyshire Sport, who run the challenge locally, said:-

“We know that not having enough time in the day presents the biggest barrier to people staying active every day.

“This is about encouraging people to make the most of their time at work especially during the lightest and brightest part of the day over lunch. By introducing small amounts of activity, it can help adults reach a recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

“Whether that is a quick 10-minute walk to the shop at lunch or taking the stairs to see another colleague, it all counts. Just a little makes a big difference to your life.”

The Active Lunch Challenge is the latest concept by the Derbyshire Workplace Challenge that has already helped more than 2,300 people get up from their desk chairs and get moving.

More than 400 workplaces have signed up, with more than a quarter of people taking part describing themselves as inactive when started.

Of those who have joined so far, 65 per cent of registrations are women with the national This Girl Can underlining the value of staying active.

Chesterfield workplaces to get involved include Kier Asset Management, Rykneld Holmes, Royal Mail, Brookfield Community School and Chesterfield Borough Council.

The eight-week challenge begins on Wednesday January 4 and runs until February 28. It is free for employees, allowing them to log activity and support colleagues in company-wide, local and national challenges.

It aims to tackle Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and help address Public Health England figures that show an estimated 40 per cent of people do not exercise enough.

Free conference to address employability skills of young people in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire

Places still remain at a free conference which seeks to address the important issue of young people’s employability skills in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Organisers the D2N2 Enterprise Advisor Network and Destination Chesterfield, are appealing to representatives from education and businesses to attend the free conference, which is being held at Ringwood Hall on Wednesday 19 October 2016 from 8.00am – 10.00am.

The conference follows the launch of the D2N2 Employability Framework at last year’s (2015) Annual Conference of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership; a private sector-led body which promotes economic growth and jobs creation across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

The Employability Framework – which is being delivered (with £300,000 in support) through the Government-backed Careers & Enterprise Company Enterprise Adviser Network, and D2N2 – seeks to address the mismatch between the employability skills that young people are leaving school with or picking up through post-16 training programmes, against those needed by employers.

While apprenticeship opportunities in the area have increased, a recent D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership report suggests that only 48% of schools are organising visits to local apprenticeship providers, leaving employers struggling to fill apprenticeship vacancies.

The increase in apprenticeship opportunities in the area and less young people to fill them, coupled with the opening of the new University of Derby’s St. Helena campus in Chesterfield, has pushed employability skills to the top of the local agenda.

The conference on October 19 will aim to build stronger links between schools and employers in the area, and help young people better realise their career potential.

Gail Widerman, Director of Placing Futures Ltd, a partner of the D2N2’s Employability Framework said: “We work with both schools and businesses and more and more employers are telling us that they want work ready young people. I am delighted that so many schools and businesses have come on board with Chesterfield’s first Employability Skills Conference and are taking a joint approach to finding a solution and giving young people a very real future in industry.”

Dom Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager commented: “With more than £1billion of investment happening in Chesterfield over the next 10 years it is vital that our young people are work ready and have the skills that employers want. Having a pool of work ready employees is one of the key reasons businesses invest in an area and create jobs. The conference is designed to bring together the education and business communities and address the perceived and real skills gaps before they become an issue.”

Chesterfield’s first coworking space triples in size

Dedicated shared office space can now accommodate up to 25 people at a single time offers flexible and affordable office space to entrepreneurs, freelancers and telecommuters

Lonely entrepreneurs, freelancers and telecommuters working from home in Chesterfield need no longer be frustrated following the completion of expansion work at Monkey Park Works , the town’s first dedicated coworking space.

A team of volunteers and skilled tradespeople have completed the second phase of renovation work at the former tile warehouse, tripling the capacity of the shared office space above the Monkey Park cafe, bakery and cycle repair workshop on Chester Street in Brampton.

With more than 1,000 square feet of modern office space, there is now capacity for up to 50 members, who work alongside each other using a combination of open plan and cubicle seating.

Membership is very flexible, ranging from one day a week to full time. 15 people currently use the shared workspace on a regular basis, including staff working for mobile app developer 7DayTek , technology consultancy Systems Makers , PR and digital communications agency Roaring Mouse and several freelancers.

Simon Redding, cofounder and director of Monkey Park, comments: “We are delighted to complete the second phase of building work at Monkey Park Works. We now have a thoroughly modern working environment, supplied with superfast internet, that provides small businesses with a cost effective alternative to traditional offices and people who would otherwise work from home with a sociable substitute to the kitchen table.”

“Although we are only nine months old, we’ve already become a hub for digital & creative businesses and charities in the Chesterfield area. They appreciate being able to use the
coworking space to collaborate and be part of a working community. People are using the space to trade internationally and bring new opportunities back to Chesterfield and we are keen to foster more startups and other social enterprises that can create new jobs and new opportunities locally. As we’re a community nonprofit, we’ll also be using the income from the workspace to support the local area.”

Chesterfield College’s African Adventure has a big impact

A group of 9 students and 2 staff from Chesterfield College have just returned from a volunteering expedition, and trip of a lifetime, to Ghana with ‘African Adventures.’

The trip was made possible following a year of fundraising events, including a Santa Dash, a cycle to Africa fitness challenge and a quiz night. Overall, the team generated over £3000 through fundraising events to help them on their way to Ghana.

Whilst in Ghana, the team worked alongside local people to renovate a building at Tegbi Primary School to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the children to learn in. Some of the students also took the opportunity to plan and deliver Maths, English, Science and Art lessons to the Ghanaian pupils.

The Headmaster and school pupils from Tegbi Primary School held a special ceremony to say thank you to the College team for their hard work, and donations of educational resources, toys and clothing. At the ceremony the children also taught the College students Ghanaian songs and dances.

When sports student, Emily Bottom returned from her African adventure she said:-

“We were excited to learn about new cultures and work with the young people in Ghana but I don’t think any of us appreciated how much of an impact the trip would have on us before we went. We were really taken out of our comfort zone but it has helped us to understand different cultures and given us experiences we will never forget.”

Stuart Allen, Director of Learning for the Health, Wellbeing and Society Directorate at Chesterfield College and main organiser of the trip, said:-

“We are truly thankful to anyone who supported an event, donated prizes, and donated funds or their time to make this African Adventure become a reality. The work the volunteers did in Ghana leaves such a lasting footprint for the local people and also inspires the students to add value to their own communities.”

Chesterfield College is planning another African adventure next academic year to allow more students the chance to take part in such an inspiring and life-changing experience.

Residents urged to have their say on Chesterfield’s economic future

Residents and businesses are encouraged to take part in a consultation on a devolution deal from the Government which aims to secure powers and funding to create new jobs and training opportunities for Chesterfield people.

The consultation runs from 1 July for six weeks, ending on 12 August and will give people the opportunity to have their say on one of the biggest decisions made by Chesterfield Borough Council in recent years.

Rather than decisions on issues which affect people day-to-day being made by ministers and civil servants in London, Sheffield City Region has negotiated a deal with the Government which will see £900 million in funding over 30 years and £484 million over the next five years handed to local decision makers.

In April this year, councillors from all three political parties represented on the council voted that Chesterfield Borough Council should become a full member of the Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority

This would see the borough benefit in a share of this funding to:

  • Provide investment to bring former industrial sites back into use
  • Support start-up businesses and encourage existing businesses to grow
  • Provide skills and training for Chesterfield residents to ensure they have the skills they need for newly-created jobs
  • Invest in new housing
  • Provide better local transport links.

Councillor John Burrows, Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader, said:-

“It’s important that Chesterfield residents and businesses take part in the consultation and understand the issues at stake.

“In the next few years, we will create around 2,400 jobs for local people. This is thanks to funding from Sheffield City Region for projects including: the Northern Gateway, the Co-op redevelopment, Peak Resort, Markham Vale and Chesterfield Waterside.

“There is no plan B; we either accept the deal on offer and allow Chesterfield residents and businesses to share in the benefits or we miss out on the money and leave the powers with ministers and civil servants in London.”

Being a full member of the Sheffield City Region would not mean changes to services already offered by Chesterfield Borough Council including: refuse collection, street cleaning, leisure and park facilities, regeneration, housing, markets, theatres and tourism.

There are also no changes to the borough’s geographical boundaries. Chesterfield will remain part of Derbyshire. Derbyshire County Council will remain responsible for services including: education, children and young people’s services, adult care and libraries.

The only exception will be transport services. The mayor would have control over public transport to ensure services are more integrated to better serve the needs of local people. The County Council will continue to maintain roads in Chesterfield as at present.

Councillor Burrows added:

“I am proud to be from Derbyshire, I have said it time and again, I am Derbyshire born, Derbyshire bred and in Derbyshire, I’ll lay my head.

“The deal is not about taking Chesterfield into Sheffield and giving away powers but about accessing powers and funding that will benefit local people and businesses.

“A share of £900 million over 30 years and £484 million over the next five years is a significant amount of funding and the proposed devolution deal would allow local people to have their say on how this is spent rather than being at the back of the queue when it comes to funding from the Government so it’s vital people engage in the process and have their say.”

There are two consultation events taking place for people to find out more.

The first is a public meeting at the Winding Wheel on Monday 11 July at 6.30pm. This is open to all residents and businesses in Chesterfield and will allow them to ask questions of the council’s leader, Councillor John Burrows and Chief Executive, Huw Bowen.

There will also be a drop-in session in Chesterfield’s Market Hall on Friday 15 July from 10am to 4pm.

People can take part in the consultation between 1 July and 12 August at: www.sheffieldcityregiondevolution.org.uk. Paper copies of the consultation will also be available at the council’s Customer Service Centre in New Square.

The final decision on whether Chesterfield can be a member of the Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority and share in the benefits of the devolution deal will be made by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in the autumn ahead of mayoral elections in May 2017.

Spireites appoint Goalkeeping Coach

Chesterfield manager Danny Wilson has added to his backroom staff with the appointment of Matt Duke as the club’s new goalkeeping coach.

Duke joins the Spireites as a replacement for Mark Crossley, who left the club last month to become Notts County’s Assistant Manager.

The 39-year-old spent last season at Alfreton, following a 15-year league career which included a spell in the Premier League with Hull City. He also helped Bradford City defy the odds to reach the League Cup final in 2013.

Danny Wilson, Chesterfield Football Club Manager, said:-

“Matt has had a terrific career so he will have the respect of the keepers he works with. I think he has a great future ahead of him as a goalkeeping coach and it should be a seamless transition as he replaces Mark.”

New appointment Matt Duke, said:-

“It’s a new chapter in my career and I’m really excited about the challenge. I’m joining a fantastic football club and I can’t wait for the season to start.”

Challenge excites new Spireites signing

New signing Reece Mitchell admits the lure of first-team football prompted him to join Chesterfield from Chelsea after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed deal.

Speaking to Spireites Player HD, Mitchell said:-

“I had a really good season in the under-21s season at Chelsea and I was offered another year, but I wanted to play some first-team football and get some league experience. So when Chesterfield showed interest, I was really happy and was raring to go. I couldn’t say ‘no’ to Chesterfield.

“I’m really happy to be here and I’m excited about the challenge. I know they’re a club pushing for promotion Last season was not the best season, but the season before that, they got to the play-offs and did really well. The manager here likes to play young players, has a good philosophy and the upcoming season looks promising.”

The prospect of uprooting from his native south does not faze the 20-year-old. Mitchell says:-

“I’m really excited about it. I’ve lived in London all my life and been at Chelsea a decade now so it will be a different experience but it’s an experience I’m looking forward to.”

Mitchell helped Chelsea win the FA Youth Cup in 2012 and the Under-21 Premier League two years later.

Cathelco supply new system for CC Pacifique

This week, Cathelco Ltd. supplied a ballast water treatment (BWT) system for the C.C. Pacifique, a steel barge which is being converted into a cable laying vessel for Coastal Carriers BV of the Netherlands.

Robert Field, Technical Director at Cathleco, said:-

“The BWT project was scheduled with a tight deadline and we were able to hold discussions and produce drawings within a very short time span.”

The Chesterfield based company, who designs and manufactures equipment for ships and offshore installations, have been working on developing new systems and technology to give them a more reliable and economical offering. This has allowed Cathelco to operate more effectively in the most challenging of water conditions, providing a unique selling point over their competitors in marine, brackish and fresh water.
