Peak District and Derbyshire Bucket List Launched for English Tourism Week

Visitors to the Peak District and Derbyshire are encouraged to indulge in an eclectic range of experiences this summer, ranging from climbing, caving, hiking and biking to sleeping under the stars and sampling local delicacies, following the launch of the ‘Ultimate Peak District and Derbyshire Bucket List: 101 Great Things to Do’.

Compiled by Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board, the release of the Ultimate Peak District and Derbyshire Bucket List coincides with English Tourism Week (30 March – 9 April), which celebrates the quality and breadth of tourism in England.

From ordering a pint in the real ale capital of the world to climbing the Crooked Spire, exploring the UK’s first National Park and discovering Britain’s oldest Ice Age cave art, the list provides a showcase for 101 of the best things to do in the Peak District and Derbyshire.

Food and drink experiences – such as sampling Hartington Stilton, learning how to make a Bakewell Pudding and dining at the area’s only Michelin-star restaurant – are also vital ingredients on the list, complementing Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire’s ‘Eat, Drink, Explore’ campaign, which celebrates local food and drink.

Run by VisitEngland, English Tourism Week marks the start of the tourist season and offers an opportunity to raise awareness of the value and contribution that tourism makes to the UK economy. The tourism industry in the Peak District and Derbyshire generated £2.15 billion in 2017 – attracting 40.45 million visitors annually and supporting 28,630 jobs.*

Throughout English Tourism Week, Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire is encouraging visitors and locals to share their own favourite ‘bucket list experiences’ using #UniqueDistrict and #EnglishTourismWeek19 on social media. Blachford UK sponsors 2019 Redbrik Half Marathon Fun Run

Local manufacturer and employer, Blachford UK has confirmed its sponsorship of the 1km Fun Run at the Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon for the second year running.

The family-friendly Blachford Fun Run will form part of the Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon events on 20 October 2019, along with the Peak FM Five Mile Run and Pronto Paints Wellbeing Challenge. The Fun Run will be open to people of all ages – and dogs!

Starting at 9.40am, the Fun Run will start and end in Queen’s Park, with entry priced at £5.

Based in Holmewood, Blachford UK is one of Europe’s leading designers and manufacturers of noise reducing trim and insulation for industrial vehicles.

In addition to its sponsorship of the Fun Run, the firm will enter its own team into the event, as well as the Pronto Paints Wellbeing Challenge, Peak FM Five Mile Run and Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon, to help raise money for local good causes.

Around 1,500 people signed up to Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon events in 2018, almost double the sign-up total from the previous year.

The Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon has raised around £100,000 for good causes since its inaugural event in 2017, including for the event’s charity partners Ashgate Hospicecare and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

Work progressing on multi-storey car park

Work is progressing well on Chesterfield Borough Council’s new Saltergate multi-storey car park, ahead of its opening this summer.

Work is now being carried out to pour the concrete that creates the decks of the new car park.

With 526 spaces, the new car park will be open 24 hours, have wider spaces and more disabled spaces than the previous car park it replaces and will also have six electric vehicle charging points with the option to add a further ten according to the demand.

Councillor Terry Gilby, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “It’s exciting to see the new car park nearing completion. The work has been carried out to programme and to budget.

“People using the car park will notice a real difference with 24 hour secure parking and better facilities. The car park will be open to the public as well as serving the new Premier Inn hotel on Elder Way.”

The new car park is built as part of the Northern Gateway development which includes the privately-led Premier Inn hotel and street improvements to Elder Way and Knifesmithgate.

Work is also due to begin in the coming months on Chesterfield Borough Council’s enterprise centre on part of Holywell Cross (Donut) car park. The main works are scheduled to begin after the the Saltergate multi-storey car park is complete.

Left luggage service now available in Chesterfield

Chesterfield Craft – the town centre’s craft beer shop – has partnered with Stasher, to provide the first left luggage service in Chesterfield.

A common problem to visitors to any town, is what to do with their bags and cases. Not all accommodation providers allow guests to leave their luggage at the accommodation prior to check-in or after check-out and not all transportation hubs have left luggage services. Spotting this gap in the market, Stasher was created to match up people requiring luggage storage, with shops and businesses that have space with which to provide luggage storage.

Chesterfield Craft is the town’s first Stasher Stashpoint. Luggage can be left at Chesterfield Craft’s shop, leaving visitors to enjoy their time in the town, without their bags. Prices are set by Stasher, at £6 per item for 24 hours of storage. All luggage must be pre-booked at www.stasher.com and this provides users of the service with £750 insurance for their stored belongings. Bookings are valid immediately.

Richard Young, Owner of Chesterfield Craft, said “As someone who loves travelling myself, I’ve made extensive use of luggage lockers in train stations overseas. I know first-hand the convenience that left luggage services provide to travellers. By joining Stasher’s network of Stashpoints, Chesterfield Craft can provide visitors to the town with the same convenience.”

Spireites stage successful Women at the Game event

Chesterfield’s Women at the Game event, staged last weekend when the Spireites faced Eastleigh at the Proact, has been hailed as a great success.

Held as part of a nationwide initiative to encourage more females to attend football matches, the event was attended by around 60 women. They mixed with VIP guests in the HUB, including the Chesterfield mayoress, Anne Brittain and former Miss World Europe Stephanie Hill, before taking their seats in the stand.

Associate Director Alison Richardson, who organised the event, was delighted with the response. She received some very positive feedback from those in attendance, some of whom were attending a football match for the very first time, such as the comments below:

‘I really enjoyed the match and the atmosphere. It brought back happy memories of going to football with my dad when I was a child and I’ll definitely be coming back to watch the Spireites again.’

‘This was my first football match and I have planned to go back and watch another with my family.’

‘Was a great first introduction to football. Felt very comfortable, met some lovely people, really enjoyed the game and the cupcakes were awesome!!’

Alison added: “I would like to thank the Community Trust for their help in putting the event on and thanks also to everyone who took part.”

Women at the Game was introduced by the late Jacqui Forster. Her widower, Pete Baker, who attended the match, praised the club’s efforts. He said: “Jacqui loved her football, going to games since she was five. She wanted to reach out to women who liked football but had never attended a live game, to remove the fear factor of what’s beyond the turnstiles.”

“It was great to see Chesterfield putting a lot of effort in on Saturday and get a large number of ladies to attend the match in a welcoming environment – exactly what Jacqui wanted.”

“She would have been so happy with what was achieved. I loved the themed cakes, too. Top job, Chesterfield!”

Council supports local businesses through business rates relief scheme

Chesterfield businesses are saving more than £1 million in business rates in a scheme administered by Chesterfield Borough Council.

The Government announced in the budget last October it will provide a business rates retail discount scheme for occupied retail premises with a rateable value of less than £51,000 in each of the financial years 2019/20 and 2020/21.

The value of discount should be one third of the bill, and must be applied after mandatory reliefs and other discretionary reliefs have been applied.

The council administers the business rates relief as part of the discretionary rate scheme, offering the relief to around 362 businesses in the borough, saving them a total of around £1,088,520.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “Creating a thriving borough is one of the council’s key priorities, which is why we have contacted all eligible local businesses to make sure they have taken advantage of the business rates reliefs they are entitled to.“

“This is one of a number of measures including the Local Labour clause that we take to support businesses in the borough.”

The council has adopted a Local Labour clause in every major planning application it accepts, which requires developers to provide a strategy that uses materials supplied by local companies. This has meant that local suppliers have benefitted from potentially more than £2.3 million worth of business.

Awards recognise those using physical activity to improve lives

The efforts and achievements of individuals and groups who are using physical activity to help improve the lives of people across Derbyshire have been recognised at the first ‘Towards an Active Derbyshire’ Awards.

The event showcased individuals who have used physical activity to achieve outstanding change in themselves, as well as some incredible tales of what others have done to transform the lives, health and wellbeing of members of their communities.

The awards celebrated all of the amazing work happening in our communities and Active Derbyshire, who organised the event, wanted the opportunity to thank the volunteers, groups and staff who help to make physical activity the norm.

The inaugural Towards an active Derbyshire Awards, organised by Active Derbyshire, were held at the Sports Direct Auditorium in Shirebrook on Wednesday, March 6, and sponsored by Chesterfield College, Derby City Council, the University of Derby, Strategic Leisure, Legacy Leisure, Active Nation, and Derbyshire County Council.

Attended by 200 guests, the event was hosted by Colin Hazelden (right) and included performances from choir CoDA Chromatics, dance group Trinity Warriors, and a spoken word performance from Rhythmical Mike.

The winner of the Change4Life Award was 64-year-old Norman Todd, who joined Livewell, Derby City Council’s free healthy lifestyle service, four years ago. Through physical activity and healthy eating Norman lost ten stone in one year alone, and is now physical active for up to three hours every day.

The This Girl Can Award was presented to Sophie Widdowson from Duckmanton (below) who has lost weight after taking part in multiple sporting sessions and activities and also going on to regional and national success in both tennis and basketball.

Martial arts coach Dave Cartawick, who has been coaching in Chesterfield for more than 25 years, was named Community Coach of the Year. He is passionate about engaging young people in sport and activity and works with local schools, Chesterfield College and community groups to increase participation in sport in general and martial arts in particular, running regular classes to encourage children and teenagers to become more active.

Chesterfield College’s Healthy Lifestyle project was named Project or Innovation of the Year. Funded by Sport England through the Tackling Inactivity in Colleges stream, the project is designed to open out physical activity opportunities to students that have been identified as physically inactive, primarily women and girls, disabled students and students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Active Derbyshire works in partnership with the local authorities and a wide range of other partners to get people active in Derbyshire.

Pop up cinema comes to Chesterfield

New company Bluebird North Events is bringing pop up cinema to Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. It will be launching with a screening of Kung Fu Panda at St Thomas’ Centre in Brampton on Saturday 23rd March 2019.

The company was set up by Chesterfield residents Brogan O’Callaghan and Adam Chapman after finding a lack of similar events in the area. Plans for future events include films such as Moana, Little Shop of Horrors, Mean Girls, Hairspray, The Polar Express and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Brogan stated: “We want to create events for local residents and believe this is something new and exciting for Chesterfield. We love Chesterfield as a town and want to show off what it is has to offer and to bring some additional evening entertainment to the area.”

She added: “Our events are pop up screenings but with added extras to make it a real day out. Cinema is such a great way to have a shared experience as a group, as you all laugh, cry and experience the emotions of the film together. This sense of community is what we’re trying to capture at our events, and we hope that the attendees will feel the same way.”

At the Kung Fu Panda event there will be a bar with a range of drinks for adults and children, as well as face painting and food stalls where you can buy popcorn, nachos, brownies and more. The event opens at 5pm, with the film starting at 7pm. Tickets are £8 for adults, £6.50 for children and £25 for a family ticket.

Adam Chapman said: “Our Kung Fu Panda screening is an evening of family entertainment in a popular Chesterfield location. Our first event is aimed at families, however we have a range of events being planned for the young, old and young at heart. Most of our events will be cinema screenings however we do want to expand into other areas such as live comedy and popular TV events.”

“The next screening we are planning is a special 50th anniversary screening of Kes. Tickets will be on sale in the next couple of weeks, watch this space!”

The search is on to find the top shopstraders and events in the borough of Chesterfield. 

This year, the Chesterfield Retail Awards welcomes a brand new category to recognise the plethora of festivals, events and markets that take place every year in the town centre. 

Local station, Spire Radio is sponsoring the new Best Town Centre Event category as well as giving the winner a free promotional and advertising package, which is worth up to £500. 

Now in its sixth year, the Chesterfield Retail Awards, which is organised by Destination Chesterfield, has gone from strengthtostrength; mirroring the town’s retail sector.  A new owner has been announced for Vicar Lane Shopping Centre, work has been completed on the conversion of the former Co-op to a Premier Inn on Elder Way, existing businesses have expanded and new businesses have opened.

Local residents form ‘Friends of Monkey Park’ community group

A group of Brampton & Ashgate residents are coming together to form the ‘Friends of Monkey Park’.

The Friends of Monkey Park is a newly established, volunteer run community group facilitated and hosted by Monkey Park Community Hub on Chester Street. The aim to bring local people together to improve and maintain Chester Street Park (a.k.a. Monkey Park).

The main aims of the group are:

  • To apply for grant funding and raise funds ourselves, to replace the old and dangerous play area with new play equipment
  • To work with the local council, police and community to reduce key issues such as littering, dog fouling and antisocial behaviour
  • To arrange events that bring people into the park
  • To act as guardians of the park

The first meeting of the group is on 13th March 2019 at 6:30pm at Monkey Park Cafe. Local councillors and members of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Green Spaces team will be attending the event.

Kevin Walker, Director at Monkey Park CIC said: “We welcome everyone to our meetings and are keen to hear from all points of view. We want to create a park that is open and accessible to the whole community and would love to hear your views.”

Chesterfield’s Memory Market to return in May

Chesterfield’s Memory Market will take place on Thursday 23 May 2019 to help show dementia patients and their families where they can turn for help locally.

More than 3,800 patients are living with a confirmed diagnosis of dementia in North Derbyshire and Hardwick. Across the same area it is estimated that a further 2,000 patients are probably living with the early signs of the illness, which affects people’s brain function and memory, and is more common among older people.

Chesterfield-based NHS nurse Trevor Hall is co-ordinating the Memory Market Place on 23 May in Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel from 12pm – 4pm.

Trevor said: “By 2025 the number of people over 85 is expected to rise by 76%. As there is a positive relationship between the number of older people and the number of people with dementia the need for us to create dementia-friendly communities has never been stronger.”

The Chesterfield Memory Market Place – now in its fifth year – has grown in popularity and size as a way to bring together, under one roof, a whole range of support organisations for patients, their carers and families living with dementia.

The free event is open to all, to come and see the range of help available and to get ideas and support for how to live well with dementia. Trevor, who is based at Walton Hospital, added: “This event is aimed at everyone who is worried about a loved one’s memory, is already living with a diagnosis of dementia or simply wants to know more about what’s on offer.

“People can call in for five minutes or stay all afternoon – it is completely free and easy. They’ll have the opportunity to visit stalls, meet and talk in a relaxed and informal environment about all elements of living with dementia or just find out what’s available.

“It’s a unique opportunity to make contact with so many different organisations and agencies who come together jointly to offer help and guidance.”

The different agencies represented will include health, social care, voluntary and private sector organisations.
