Additionally, rejuvenated paving and public realm works on High Street will better complement the conservation area.
Staveley 21 – Town Centre regeneration
Staveley 21 is a significant £6 million regeneration and revitalisation project in Staveley town centre.
It is based around the masterplan developed in 2021. It aims to make Staveley town centre a more attractive place, with better connectivity that will boost business confidence. In addition, the proposals will create an improved leisure and retail offer for residents and visitors.
The plans include improvements to the marketplace, a new lighting scheme, additional tree planting, and an open-air cinema. Furthermore, residents and visitors will benefit from a better connection to the canal, free Wi-Fi connectivity across the town and enhancement to the public realm.
There will also be shop front grants that local retailers can access to make improvements to their business premises.
It builds on improvements already made thanks to the Town Deal Accelerator Fund. Some of which was used to upgrade CCTV across the town centre.
Market Square regeneration
The market will have new paving installed along with additional seating and planting. As a result, this will make it a more attractive place to visit and spend time shopping, socialising, and exploring.
Elsewhere, the disused toilet block in the market square will be demolished. In its place, the creation of a new landmark pavilion building will help draw people to the market square.
The new building will also provide more commercial space in the town centre to help improve the offer of Staveley town centre for businesses. In addition, this will increase visibility into the market place.
The corner building of shops, called Barnfield Close, will undergo redecoration and modernisation. Consequently, this will enhance the area around the market square and create a more inviting entrance from Morrison’s car park.
As an enlarged public open space, the marketplace will be designed as a flexible environment to support existing uses such as Staveley Town Council’s regular markets but also as a setting that can be used to host a wide range of new events to encourage more people to visit the town centre.
The introduction of tiered outdoor seating will provide extra space to socialise and provide infrastructure for events. Elsewhere, play equipment installed to help make the marketplace more attractive to families.
Rejuvination of the high street
A shop front improvement scheme totaling £600,000 will allow retailers to apply for match funding to carry out improvements to their store fronts.
Improved connections
Increased connectivity across the town centre includes both physical improvements and digital improvements.
The links between the town centre and Chesterfield canal will be improved, so it is easier for residents and visitors to navigate by foot or bicycle. This would also include improved signage to help direct visitors to and around the town centre.
The installation of new signage will help to improve connectivity within the town centre and encourage exploration, helping to raise awareness of businesses and local points of interest.
Another improvement will see new town centre Wi-Fi made available to everyone working or visiting the town centre.
Moreover, a new lighting strategy covering the entire town centre will help support the night time economy, ensuring it is a more attractive place to visit at all hours.
The Staveley area is benefitting from £25.2m worth of government funding through the Town Deal, which must be spent by March 2026.
