Canal Cruises

Relax with a Canal Cruise along the beautiful Chesterfield Canal on one of two tripboats – the John Varley II or the Madeline.

The John Varley II runs from Tapton Lock and the Madeleine runs from Hollingwood Hub.

Choose from short, regular trips, suitable for young children or themed events featuring fish and chips or live music. We have listed a selection of the trips on offer. So, please do check out the Chesterfield Canal Trust website for details of all trips running. Booking is highly recommended for these popular trips via the Chesterfield Canal Trust at https://chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk/trip-boats/. You can also buy gift vouchers so a loved one can choose a date to suit.

John Varley II
Built in 2016, this state-of-the-art trip boat has a large wheelchair lift, foredeck, hearing loop and many other superb features including two stained glass portholes. So, you can cruise along comfortably, enjoy the greenery and spot many wildlife – from ducks to kingfishers!

Madeline
Big enough for up to 12 people and built in 2014 by Eckington School, this trip boat boasts a big cruiser-style stern. So, people find it easy to get on and off. Access to the passenger cabin is down a short flight of steps. There is a large front deck. What’s more, you can even have a go at steering, under the supervision of the crew.

Did you know that Chesterfield Canal features events during the year? From the Tapton Lock Festival to the Walking Festival. You could stop at nearby Barca Bar at Casa Hotel for lunch or try the Batchhouse opposite the SMH Group Stadium.
