
Discover the amazing stories of local women from history at this Extraordinary Women exhibition.
This free exhibition looks at the lives of pioneering women who have played a significant role in the history of Chesterfield including Mary Swanwick, Violet Markham, Florence Robinson, and more.
It will feature stories from across the community as well as various interactive activities:
- A sound board of famous voices
- Writing about an inspirational woman
- Designing a shoe that reflects you
Presented in partnership with Derbyshire LGBT+, West Studios and Chesterfield College – they will be exploring ideas of feminine identity. Also featuring “If the Shoe Fits”, original artworks created by Chesterfield College Art and Design students!

Funded through Arts Council England, the Extraordinary Women exhibition forms part of the Museum on the Move project which aims to help people connect with the borough’s history whilst Stephenson Memorial Hall is closed for refurbishment.
