SMH Group Appoint Steve Fern as Chief Financial Officer

Steve brings a wealth of experience in financial leadership, strategic growth, and business transformation, gained over a 25-year career across the UK, USA, and Australia.

Steve gained his ACA qualification early on in his career and has gone on to hold several senior roles across a diverse range of industries, including business turnaround, insurance and professional services. His fantastic track record includes his most recent success story where he held the role of Managing Director, taking the business on an incredible expansion journey which ultimately concluded with a sale to a national business.

Steve fostered a workplace culture where all staff felt valued and part of the company’s growth, aligning with the business’s core values. Earlier in his career, Steve supported hundreds of businesses during the financial crisis and implemented an industry-leading Enterprise Risk Management process while working in the US insurance sector.

Steve said: “I’m thrilled to join SMH Group at such an exciting time in its journey. The firm has a strong reputation for its client-first ethos and a dynamic approach to growth, with ten acquisitions since 2018. Chesterfield Chat launches podcast following success on Spire Radio

Chesterfield Chat, the weekly radio show that debuted on Spire Radio in May 2024, is excited to announce the launch of its podcast. Due to listener demand and the show’s continued success, episodes will now be available on all major podcast platforms, allowing listeners to catch up on their favourite interviews and local stories anytime, anywhere.

Chesterfield Chat has quickly become a go-to source for news and information about the Chesterfield community. Hosted by Jordan Hartshorne, the show features engaging interviews with local businesses, charities, community groups, and artists, covering everything from upcoming events and initiatives to inspiring personal stories and local achievements.

Pinelog welcomes Darrell Fisher as new Production Manager

Chesterfield-based Pinelog, a leading UK manufacturer of luxury timber lodges, has appointed Darrell Fisher as Production Manager.

Darrell brings 34 years of experience in the holiday homes, lodges, and motorhome sectors to his new role, having previously worked with the Swift Group Ltd, one of the UK’s largest leisure vehicle manufacturers. Beginning his career as an apprentice cabinet maker, Darrell has gained experience across the industry, from hands-on craftsmanship to strategic leadership, culminating in his role as Senior Production Manager at Swift.

“The stars aligned at just the right time,” Darrell explained. “I’d been thinking about a change for a while, and when I saw the role and spoke with Craig Morrison, Pinelog’s Operations Director, I knew it was the perfect fit. The scope of the role and the company’s vision for growth made it an easy decision.”

With extensive expertise in manufacturing, production management, and process improvement, Darrell is excited to bring his knowledge to Pinelog. His scope of work includes overseeing the transition from design to production, driving continuous improvement across manufacturing processes at the company’s Chesterfield site, managing delivery and installation, and ensuring exceptional customer satisfaction.

Impressed by Pinelog’s approach to craftsmanship and quality, Darrell said: “From day one, I’ve been impressed with the attention to detail and the traditional, hands-on building methods used for each lodge. The Pinelog production team are incredibly highly skilled and handcraft every aspect of the lodge from start to finish – unlike larger companies where teams often focus on smaller, segmented tasks. In his new role Darrell will bring his skills to assisting with Pinelog’s journey to modernise and fine-tune its production processes while maintaining the brand’s legacy of quality. “I’m looking to introduce more contemporary techniques, strengthening the production team, and ensuring that Pinelog continues to exceed customer expectations as it grows,” explained Darrell.

The Big Assembly 2025, founded and organised by Workpays, has once again proved to be the UK’s largest live-streamed apprenticeship event, with a record-breaking 197,000+ students, teachers, and employers signing up.

The event brought together leading employers, inspiring apprentices, and industry experts to provide valuable insights into apprenticeships and career pathways.

This year’s event featured a diverse panel of apprentices and industry leaders, who shared their career journeys, experiences, and advice to help young people explore their next steps:

These panellists provided first-hand insights into apprenticeships, discussing how they developed skills, gained qualifications, and progressed in their careers.
The Big Assembly 2025 was made possible through the support of leading employers, including Compass Group UK & Ireland, Boots, Arnold Clark, Drax, Tarmac, IAE, and WorldSkills UK. These organisations played a key role in delivering an engaging and impactful event, demonstrating the breadth of apprenticeship opportunities available.
The event also received recognition from Jacqui Smith, Minister for Skills, who highlighted the importance of apprenticeships in shaping the future workforce and praised the Big Assembly’s role in inspiring young people to consider apprenticeship routes.

Bridge Help welcomes Lisa Griffiths as new Business Development Manager

Chesterfield-based commercial bridging finance provider Bridge Help has swelled its ranks with the appointment of Lisa Griffiths, who has joined as a Business Development Manager.

Her appointment means Bridge Help continues to boast an all-female business development team, led by Katie Snodden, bucking the trend in the male-dominated financial services industry.

Lisa, who hails from Chesterfield, brings a wealth of experience her new role, including a 20-year career in law before transitioning into ground-up property development before moving into commercial finance brokering.

Her extensive knowledge of the property sector, from both legal and financial perspectives, gives her a unique understanding of the challenges brokers and borrowers face.

Speaking about her new role, Lisa commented: “I’ve always enjoyed working closely with clients and brokers to find solutions that make deals happen.

“Bridge Help is known for its flexible, common-sense approach to lending, and I’m excited to be part of a team that truly puts brokers and borrowers first. With my background in property and finance, I’m excited to work closely with brokers to help them find the right solutions for their clients and get deals done quickly.”

Across Chesterfield, businesses are stepping up, offering training, mentoring, and hands-on experiences to help individuals develop key skills and build successful careers.

National Careers Week (NCW) 2025 is a celebration of careers guidance, supporting young people as they explore future pathways.

Chesterfield is the first town in the UK to declare itself an Apprentice Town, showcasing its dedication to nurturing young talent, supporting career growth, and strengthening the local economy. By retaining and developing skilled professionals, the town aims to attract more employers and drive long-term investment.

Support is also available now for firms in the area to upskill their teams or take on new employees to tackle recruitment challenges across our key sectors.

Businesses build strong links with training providers to support careers

Many local businesses are working closely with training providers to give young people real-world experience. DogLand, in partnership with Juniper Training, is supporting student development. Owner Dawn Brown expressed her enthusiasm for her young learner, William, stating: “He brings fresh perspectives and a strong commitment to learning. We’re proud to be supporting him in achieving his goals and aspirations.”

Juniper’s Jordan Mitchell reinforced the importance of such initiatives, ensuring that our young people are supported. He added: “Our core mission is supporting young people in our community. We offer a supportive, academic environment where students can thrive and are encouraged to exceed expectations, contributing to their success and the success of the community.”

Companies like DBC Training are also supporting skills growth by offering flexible short courses that enhance employability. One learner who completed the Work In: Warehousing course, praised their tutor’s engaging approach, saying: “The content was detailed and motivational, and the experience has been invaluable.”


Nurturing talent in Chesterfield’s legal sector

Trainee Solicitor Harrison Easley at CMP Legal shared his experience, highlighting the firm’s hands-on approach, which has accelerated his professional development: “Unlike larger firms, CMP Legal has provided a more tailored and supportive environment, offering dedicated one-on-one guidance that has been instrumental in my professional growth as well as providing access to numerous resources to develop my skills. Because of the small size of the firm, I have also felt that my ideas and opinions have been heard, especially ideas surrounding the improvement of existing processes and utilisation of technology to meet the increasing client demand of ‘more for less’ in the industry.”

Similarly, Claudia Risorto, an apprentice solicitor at Banner Jones, praised the firm’s supportive environment in helping her gain practical experience while training: “I’m currently in the second year of a six-year solicitor apprenticeship. I believe it is a fantastic alternative to university because it provides real-world experience in a professional setting. Banner Jones has been incredibly supportive, allowing me to work across different departments and learn from experienced colleagues. This well-rounded approach is helping me build a strong foundation for my legal career.”


Hands-On Experience in Traditional and Emerging Industries

Skills development in Chesterfield is helping to keep traditional industries alive and support our rich heritage. National Trust Hardwick Hall is training young stonemasons, with apprentice Teddy stating: “Learning from experienced professionals and knowing my work will stand the test of time is incredibly rewarding.”

Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum, Black Swan Cyber Security Solutions is helping to develop the next digital innovators. Owner, Kevin Walker explained: “I’m working with the British Computer Society as an associate endpoint assessor, helping apprentices pass their qualifications and gain full-time employment.”

Global Brands has also embraced key digital roles to gain a competitive advantage,  with Ryan Arnold, a Level 4 Data Analyst apprentice, sharing: “I was initially nervous about starting a role in which I had no experience, however the recruitment team and the onboarding process quickly settled my nerves.

Encouraging Careers in Engineering and Construction

BSP Consulting has celebrated the success of apprentices like Josh Plumridge, who recently graduated with first-class honors in civil engineering. Carrie Booth, Business Development Manager said: “We are passionate about supporting the future workforce. In addition, we’ve provided work experience opportunities over the summer months for several students. We want to help and support the next generation.”

Stepnell, currently working on the Staveley 21 high street regeneration project, has dedicated 20% of its workforce to young professionals, offering multiple work experience placements to Chesterfield students. Stepnell’s Business Development Manager, Fay Paterson added: “Young people are crucial to our future, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm. We’ve also provided work experience to seven Chesterfield students and are committed to offering more opportunities through our projects.”

Ecotech Engineers is working with local schools to highlight careers in construction. Managing Director, Laura Holland said: “We’re starting a new initiative which supports schools, hoping to promote careers in our industry. By doing this, we’re also trying to remove some of the myths and stigma around women working in engineering.

Inspire Design & Development also prioritises professional development, with Gemma Feek, Commercial Executive, recently completing a Business Management degree apprenticeship while working for the company. Gemma comments: “Investing in young talent is vital for the future, and we’re proud to provide opportunities that help individuals develop and grow.”

BSP Consulting appointed as supplier to the NHS

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting has been named as a supplier on an NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) Framework Agreement.

BSP won a place on the Healthcare Planning, Construction Consultancy and Ancillary Services (HPCCAS) Framework Agreement to provide civil and structural engineering services.

The appointment opens up a pipeline of opportunities for the company.

BSP managing director Carl Hilton said: “This is great news for BSP Consulting. Over many years we have completed numerous projects, including new build hospitals and health centres and the re-modelling on many existing hospital sites to help to improve facilities and patient care.

“Being awarded a place on this NHS SBS Framework Agreement highlights our expertise in this field and gives us the opportunity to increase our work with hospitals and other healthcare operators in the future.”

BSP was previously on an NHS SBS Framework Agreement as a sub-consultant but has now been awarded a position in the company’s own right. The framework agreement runs for four years.

“We are currently on more than 20 framework agreements, which is providing a wealth of opportunities for the business – helping to cement our position as one of the largest independent civil and structural engineering companies in the East Midlands,” added Carl Hilton.

BSP is an award-winning firm that operates across the UK, offering civil engineering, structural engineering, transport engineering, geotechnical and environmental engineering.

The company works across all sectors including housing, student accommodation, commercial, industrial, health, education, senior living, retail and heritage.
