Chesterfield business leaders share advice for young people ahead of results day

Millions of young people across the UK are eagerly awaiting their GCSE and A-Level results in the coming days, marking the culmination of years of hard work and exam preparation.

While this is a moment to celebrate their achievements, it’s also a time of important decisions about the future.

With numerous pathways to consider, the choices can feel overwhelming. Some may choose to continue their education by attending sixth form, college, or university, while others might opt to enter the workforce directly through full-time employment or apprenticeships.

At a recent business roundtable hosted by Destination Chesterfield in collaboration with the Derbyshire Times, leaders from various training providers and companies in Chesterfield shared valuable insights and advice, to help guide our young people in making informed decisions about their next steps.

Keep your options open and take advantage of opportunities to try new things. Everything will be a learning journey, and throughout that journey you’ll be developing skills which you can take anywhere.

I’d also recommend you look at the job market in the area as well. Find out more about the careers that are available, then once you find something that interests you, research the different routes and options available.

Lastly, it is OK to change your mind along the way and take a different path. We all do that through life, and it’s good to keep learning new skills!

Don’t rule out the option of self-employment and starting up your own business. You can make a good living out of working for yourself, whilst gaining valuable entrepreneurial skills… which perhaps you might not learn a lot about in school!

Also, the most vital skill you can learn is communication. Ask questions of your parents, your parents’ friends and everybody around you about how they got into their career.

Observe situations around you too, so if you’re in a shop and somebody’s not happy with something, how do the staff speak to customers? How do they reach a solution or come to a compromise? Having good communication and negotiation skills will stand you in good stead, no matter what career you choose.

You could have the opportunity to do an apprenticeship and and be paid for the work you’re doing, and also learn and develop as you’re going along.

Secondly, make good use of your school or college careers service and don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions!

I’d also recommend taking part in work experience and getting used to writing to employers. It shows that you can use your initiative, and its shows future employers that you’re interested in working for them, so it can open all sorts of doors!

Go into things with an open mind and don’t be afraid to try new things. However, don’t expect to achieve things overnight – building a career can take time.

Don’t be afraid to pick up the brush or make those cups of tea – there are jobs in the workplace that you might not necessarily want to do, but everyone’s had to start somewhere and in the long-term it shows that you have a good work ethic.

I’d advise young people to get a part-time job. It’s important to get those people skills so they’re informed on how to deal with difficult customers.

Simply applying for a job can give you experience on the types of questions employers ask you. You’ll then be set up to handle interviews calmly and use those listening skills.

Chesterfield Champions highlight local wellbeing support ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week

Chesterfield businesses are taking centre stage in championing mental health awareness.

Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 (13th -19th May), we’re shining a light on the proactive measures undertaken by our local organisations to nurture the well-being of their employees and residents across our town.

Chesterfield boasts a number of assets to support mental and physical wellbeing, including award-winning parks and green spaces, the town’s proximity to the Peak District National Park, and of course the overall sense of community and togetherness amongst our people. Did you know Chesterfield was recently ranked the happiest place to live in the East Midlands?

In our conversations with Chesterfield Champions, we explore the diverse ways in which businesses, public sector organisations and our local charity and voluntary sectors are fostering mental health awareness and support within our community.

Karlie Thompson, Associate Director of Communications at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS FT commented:  “Here at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, we are an anchor institute for the town and employ more than 5,000 colleagues; we are therefore a key player in the wider health and care system and we are committed to supporting mental health across all our partners.

“We pride ourselves on prioritising the health and wellbeing of our colleagues and our wider community. This includes our commitment to colleagues through 24/7 support services and a £2m Health and Wellbeing Hub with gym and counselling facilities on the hospital site to signage in ED which research shows reduces anxiety and worry as it explains what each section of the department does, what might happen to you in that area and who may treat you. We also have unique, tailored, sections of the department which are specifically designed to support those in mental health crisis.

“Help is there when people are in need and it takes many forms from reaching out through NHS111 to speaking to your doctor. The best place for people suffering with mental health is probably not our Emergency Department, equally, we would encourage anybody feeling they need support to reach out.”

Emily Bowman, Managing Director at Junction Arts said: “Wellbeing underlines everything we do at Junction Arts, when planning our events, festivals and projects we always consider how we can improve people’s mental wellbeing, whether that’s building young people’s confidence and self-esteem with our Six Pillars and Next Gen projects or combatting loneliness and isolation with our successful warm space, Cosy Crafts initiative earlier this year. We know that being creative and connecting with people can benefit our mental health.

“But mental health is not isolated to the communities we work in, it’s an important issue that can impact our team and volunteers – without them we can’t do the great work we do.  By talking more about our mental health we can dispel the stigma and misconceptions and encourage hope by sharing stories of recovery as well as the struggle.   The more we do this, the more chance there is for positive change.”

In support of staff mental health wellbeing, Fairplay are working closely with local charity RELATE, and Derby university students to offer counselling sessions for it’s employees.

Fairplay work hard to promote staff wellbeing and offer support to staff through supervisions and 1:1 meetings.  Fairplay have designated qualified Mental Health First Aiders who are available for support throughout the working week and also outside of working hours so that employees are able to reach out and talk to someone if they are struggling with their mental health wellbeing.

Fairplay’s HR Officer Nikki Lowe said: “supporting the wellbeing of our staff is very high on the agenda for Fairplay, and alongside internal support from qualified staff we are now working with local organisations to offer staff members additional support from external sources via RELATE counselling and level 5 trainee counsellor and psychotherapy students from Derby university.

“It is important that we all support one another, and to coincide with the counselling sessions being offered Fairplay have implemented a ‘mental health awareness process’ where all staff members have been given a badge with a green heart on which can be worn if they are having a particularly bad day or struggling with something, so that colleagues are aware that they are not feeling 100%.

“This visual aid will hopefully encourage staff members to be supportive of their colleagues and be a reminder to all that kindness costs nothing and a little ‘I’m here if you need me’ goes a long way.”

One of Chesterfield’s most picturesque locations, the Chesterfield Canal is an excellent way to boost your wellbeing.

You can enjoy a scenic walk along the towpath, have a quick drink or bite to eat at Holloingwood Hub, or even head out onto the water via a tranquil canal cruise or paddle boarding session.

Rod Auton, Scretary of Chesterfield Canal Trust said: “The Chesterfield Canal is seen as a safe and calm space by many local residents. Many come to Hollingwood Hub to visit Katey’s Coffee Shop, to sit in the beautiful gardens tended by volunteers and to enjoy a boat trip.

“Successive Covid lockdowns brought home to many of the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s volunteers just how important the companionship of being in a team and working for a common cause can be to enhancing one’s mental wellbeing.”

CarMats.co.uk innovates at new Chesterfield HQ to meet rising demand

CarMats.co.uk, a business specialising in UK-manufactured tailored car mats to fit every make and model, recently announced the opening of its 7,500 sq ft warehouse facility located on Chesterfield Trading Estate.

Since then, the organisation has been able to scale up its production and growth rapidly. Ash Young, Managing Director of CarMats.co.uk explained how the organsiation has adapted to capitalise on the demand it has experienced.

He said: “If we hadn’t done things differently, we wouldn’t have seen the growth that we have. When we set up the business we were aiming for 100 orders per day, but because we changed the way we marketed the products, we are now shipping around 150,000 orders per year and we’re going to turn over about £7.5m this year.

“We’ve managed to hire a really skilled team in Chesterfield and the transport links mean it’s easy for us to get out to couriers easily.”

Peak Pharmacy improves efficiency by investing in new technology

Chesterfield-based Peak Pharmacy has invested in new, innovative equipment to speed up its processes, along with improving accuracy and capacity.

The organisation recently moved to a new headquarters at the Horizon 29 development near Chesterfield and is now investing in an Austrian system provided by Knapp to improve the way it dispenses medications for customers.

Managing Director, Joe Cattee explained: “Knapp partners with a number of organisations within the country already and supports with the ability to pick products by using fully automated and manual picking zones for speed and convenience.

“The attraction to work with this provider was that they have designed a system that enables us to dispense patients’ medication at our site. This takes this workload out of community pharmacy and creates capacity within our pharmacy network for our teams to support patients in different ways.

“The machine is significantly more accurate than human dispensing, and the speed in which we can dispense medication means that we can do approximately half of all the prescriptions we do on a monthly basis through our Hub. Clearly, there will be some requirements to support and educate both our pharmacy teams and patients, but it enables us to revolutionise what we do under extremely challenging conditions.”

The new technology is helping Peak Pharmacy to revolutionise how it operates, enabling the business to continue thriving during a challenging economic climate.

Joe added: “By investing in automation at our Hub, we reduce the stress and pressure on our pharmacy teams, ensuring a better level of patient care is provided. The launch of the ‘Pharmacy First’ scheme on 31st January 2024, enabling community pharmacy to treat seven common health conditions without visiting a GP, shows the direction of travel that community pharmacy needs to undertake.

“By removing dispensing volume across our estate, and assembling centrally, we can ensure a more accurate and timely service of medication provision, whilst also having capacity to engage in more NHS and private services to support patient wellbeing. In short, if we don’t adapt then we will not remain a viable business. Community pharmacy plays a huge part in supporting the country, but the financial reimbursement for what we do means that the costs of running our business now outweigh the revenue we receive for the services we provide.”


Global Brands collaborates to provide sustainable drinks solution for Red Engine bars

Independent soft drinks and mixers brand, Franklin & Sons, part of Chesterfield-based Global Brands is launching a new-to-market product format.

The product will be launched across all UK Red Engine sites, the team behind Flight Club and Electric Shuffle.

Franklin & Sons has been working on producing a 200ml can for its Premium Indian & Premium Light Tonic in a bid to support the company with its sustainability goals, and has found perfect launch partner in Red Engine.

Flight Club and Electric Shuffle are two competitive socialising venues that have risen rapidly in popularity over the last few years, modernising traditional games such as darts and shuffleboard to reinvent the bar experience for the 21st century.

The aluminium cans weigh 94% less than the 200ml glass bottles, leading to a reduction in weight per case, significantly reducing transportation costs, fuel consumption and packaging volume, leading to a much lower carbon contribution.

Crucially for a hospitality venue, this initiative will also minimise waste and is projected to create a substantial 42% reduction in wastage removal expenses for Red Engine.

Highlight Crafts showcases design and print technology

Headed up by life-long crafter Stephanie Weightman and husband Karl, Highlight Crafts designs and produces products for a range of crafts including papercraft, fabric, mixed media, flower making, painting, digital crafting and so much more from their offices based in Clay Cross, Chesterfield. Customers can buy these products through their own website or through shopping channel Create & Craft.

The team at Highlight Crafts is aiming to be as sustainable as possible in their creation of new products. All paper products are printed by local printers which helps other local businesses in the area. All fabric is designed and printed in house on the companies printers, with much of this being printed to order, to cut out waste. They also have three large laser cutters enabling them to produce their own stencils cutting out unnecessary extra deliveries and packaging needs. The company has also recently just switched to paper packaging for their paper crafting dies helping to reduce the amount of plastic across all their packaging.

In August 2023 Highlight Crafts opened the Highlight Crafts Academy where they threw open the doors of their purpose built academy building to invite members of the public to come and join in the creative fun. With 4 classrooms that can hold up to 10 people each, the Academy was launched to as a place for customers who love to craft to come and learn new techniques, refine their skills, meet other friendly crafters and have fun doing what they love while being taught by some of the best in the business.

The Academy also runs 6 craft festivals a year. These are 10-day events where they run 4 classes per day as taster classes for local people. In between the day courses and festivals the Academy is open every Thursday afternoon for the weekly craft club for anyone wanting to come along and join in for a few hours. Centre Manager at Chesterfield’s Vicar Lane Shopping Centre wins national award

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre Manager, Shaun Brown won a highly commended award for ‘Manager of the Year’ at the Sceptre Awards in London.

The Sceptre Awards is a leading industry event, recognising talent and excellence in the retail sector across the UK.

Shaun was awarded for his exceptional performance and professionalism in getting the centre back on track post-COVID whilst forging a new direction for the scheme as it enters a new phase in its growth.

His energies have been focused on the implementation of new car parking facilities and training his award-winning security team. He has also been imperative in supporting the independent businesses at Vicar Lane and strives to look at ways for the retailers to boost their sales.

The recent installation of the giant outdoor screen has resulted in a free prominent promotional space for tenants.

East Midlands Chamber secures £8.9m funding to deliver new generation of business support

Businesses in the region are to receive a significant boost to their operations with a helping hand from East Midlands Chamber’s new generation of business support.

The chamber of commerce for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire has secured £8.9m of public funding until March 2025 to deliver its Accelerator project, which aims to provide one seamless point of entry for relevant business support.

It comprises key activities under the strands of net zero, innovation, digital and finance, with the aim of helping companies at all stages of their development to start, sustain, grow and innovate.

The East Midlands Chamber Accelerator project brings together a number of publicly-funded contracts including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), a key part of the Government’s levelling up agenda to enhance communities, businesses and skills; Innovate UK EDGE, which helps innovative SMEs to grow and achieve scale; and Made Smarter East Midlands, which assists manufacturers in switching to advanced and automated technologies.

Diane Beresford, deputy chief executive of East Midlands Chamber, said: “The East Midlands Chamber Accelerator programme has been carefully designed to provide businesses across the district with the right support, at the right time.

“At the heart of the project is a team of locally-based advisers and specialists, employed by the Chamber, who will offer high-intensity support to businesses seeking to grow, create new jobs or exploit technology to improve performance.

“Working with an adviser or specialist will be a key ingredient for businesses interested in taking advantage of Accelerator support and a diagnostics report will show them where best to point their energies.”

Key activities will be delivered under the strands of net zero, innovation, digital and finance to help businesses achieve the following:

  • Develop new-to-the-firm technologies
  • Improve productivity
  • Safeguard and create jobs
  • Adopt new digital technologies and processes
  • Engage in new markets
  • Improve productivity
  • Introduce new products and services
  • Increase revenue
  • Make progress on their journey to net zero.

The Net Zero Accelerator will build on the success of the Sustainable East Midlands campaign to deliver events, workshops, and the opportunity for an energy-saving and improvement opportunities audit.

Other investment themes include increasing investment in research and development at local level, with a focus on commercialising ideas and accelerating the path to market; improving training hubs, incubators and accelerators to support entrepreneurs and start-ups through the early stages of development and growth; and taking a whole systems approach to infrastructure investment that delivers effective decarbonisation across energy, buildings and transport.

While the Accelerator programme is open to participation from all sectors, there is recognition that manufacturing, visitor economy, retail and services businesses are critically important sectors that warrant targeted support.

The East Midlands Chamber Accelerator programme will build on the success of the Growth Hub service via a range of fully-funded action-planning workshops delivered locally on topics such as finance, carbon efficiency, HR and digital marketing.

Working with a locally-based business adviser or specialist will be the first port of call for businesses interested in taking advantage of Accelerator support. Diagnostics will be assessed, and a business action plan produced through the Balanced Scorecard strategic management system model.

Growth vouchers worth up to £2,000 – covering 100% intervention – will be available for specialist or sector-specific training or consultancy advice, in addition to support for identifying and accessing grant funding.

Businesses employing more than five people and with a turnover of £100,000 are invited to apply for a Chamber subsidy covering the £750 cost of joining the Help to Grow: Management course being delivered by the region’s universities, with the remaining cost of attendance covered by a Government subsidy.

The course provides an excellent opportunity for senior managers and leaders to engage with and learn from their peers.

Collaboration is very much the theme too for the Chamber’s East Midlands Manufacturing Network, in which manufacturers have the opportunity to share best practice and seek advice during local forums that take place every six weeks.

Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield are encouraging local retail and leisure businesses located throughout Chesterfield and Staveley town centres to complete a quick survey to allow us to gain a further understanding about supporting our high streets and town centres across the borough.

As a town centre or high street business, we would be grateful if you could complete the business tracker that will allow us to monitor the performance of the town, the success of marketing campaigns, events and business support.

This will help us shape future support for businesses, and events in the borough. Your insight will also be really useful to inform aspects of our significant investment plans which are being brought forward through the Levelling Up Fund and Staveley Town Deal.

The questions focus on your business’s location, if you have seen any recent increases or decreases in turnover pre and post pandemic, the level of footfall you see in your area, your views on Chesterfield or Staveley town centre as a place to shop, your awareness of business support available and your awareness of recent events held in the borough such as the Christmas Lights Switch On and the 1940s Market.

The results will be analysed and the process with be completed three times per year going forward.

Chesterfield’s Avant Homes helps dance company leap to success in first dance world cup

Hardy Alexandra Dance Company has sashayed its way to national success at the Dance World Cup, following a sponsorship deal with leading housebuilder Avant Homes Central.

The troupe of 42 dancers aged between five and 18 represented England at the Dance World Cup for the first time in Telford, Shropshire.

Avant Homes Central sponsored the dance company £1,000 which helped cover costs for auditions, team kits, costumes, accommodation, and transport.

The competition featured 120,000 competitors from 62 countries and the dancers of Hardy Alexandra Dance Company won a mixture a gold, silver and bronze medals across numerous dance disciplines and age groups.

Hardy Alexandra Dance Company instructor, Alexandra Mahjouri, said: “We’re extremely proud to see our dancers’ talent be recognised in a worldwide arena and with our array of medals they are now known as some of the best dances in England.

“Dancing can be an expensive hobby and Avant Homes’ contribution has allowed this international competition to be available to every student at Hardy Alexandra Dance Company. We’re very grateful for their donation and to be able to see our dancers take part in the Dance World Cup has been incredible.”

One of the dancers that competed in the dance troupe was ten-year-old, Sophie Harrison, who is the daughter of Avant Homes Central sales and marketing administrator, Kelly Harrison. Sophie has been dancing since she was one-year old and competed in the Dance World Cup in a song and dance routine.

Avant Homes Central managing director, Stuart Rowlands, said: “Hardy Alexandra Dance Company is an inspiring organisation, which does excellent work with youngsters keen to pursue dance, and all their hard work paid off after dancing to success at the Dance World Cup for the first time.

Chamber celebrates helping 1,000 young people find job placements via Kickstart Scheme

East Midlands Chamber is celebrating after passing a major milestone – helping more than 1,000 young people to secure a job placement via the Kickstart Scheme.

The region’s leading business representation group has been commended by the Minister for Employment after playing a key role in assisting companies to create six-month work placements for people aged 16 to 24 who are on Universal Credit or at risk of long-term unemployment.

The Chamber is the UK’s largest and – with almost half the vacancies created resulting in a position being filled – top-performing gateway organisation, which lodges funding applications on behalf of businesses to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

It celebrated the landmark achievement by welcoming key civil servants at the DWP to the Chesterfield Jobs Fair, hosted by Chesterfield Borough Council, earlier today (15 September).

East Midlands Chamber deputy chief executive and Kickstart lead Diane Beresford, along with education and business partnership manager Pieter Eksteen, also met with Jo Macdonald, who chairs the Kickstart gateway approvals board for the DWP, to explain how the Chamber has managed to secure so many placement starts among young people.

Diane said: “Young people have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic both in terms of their mental and physical wellbeing, and the significant amount of unemployment it has created.

“The Kickstart Scheme has therefore been a lifeline for them to get the skills and work experience that will be vital to their future prospects. We’re delighted with our track record in converting applications into real jobs, which have played a key role in giving young people the chance they may not have otherwise had while also enabling companies to trial new roles.

“We’re continuing to support businesses and job centres to place young people, as well as look beyond the six-month period to ensure there’s a future roadmap to full-time employment.”

How Kickstart Scheme has benefitted businesses and young people

Nick Hogan, owner of Chesterfield Escape Rooms, has hired six games masters via the Kickstart Scheme – with two other vacancies now live and an application for another position currently being processed – and joined the celebration event with Kickstart employee James Bryan.

Nick has entered into a joint venture partnership with some members of his Kickstart team to establish Chesterfield Games Quarter, which will comprise the escape rooms as well as a video games zone, virtual reality zone and the existing Geeks board game venue. Based in Soresby Street, it is due to open in October.

“I used the Kickstart scheme because I wanted to give something back to the town and create new opportunities for young people,” said Nick, who has given the team a five-figure, interest-free loan to the team to help it run the business.

“But it has also allowed me to get my foot into the market to assess the business opportunity, and has given me the confidence to now grow this into the Chesterfield Games Quarter concept.”

Freelance actor James, 22, of Chesterfield, (pictured above) is four months into his Kickstart placement at the escape rooms business after finding acting work opportunities deteriorated during the pandemic.

He said: “It’s been the opportunity of a lifetime to get involved with a new business, and gain some really valuable experience and diverse skills for my CV that will be really important for my future employability.”

How does the Kickstart Scheme work?

The DWP funds 100% of the age-relevant National Minimum Wage, national insurance and pension contributions for 25 hours a week over a six-month period.

Employers can choose to top up this wage and are also eligible for a £1,500 Government grant for training people on a Kickstart placement.

Once applications are accepted, young people are referred into the roles via a Jobcentre Plus work coach.

East Midlands Chamber has had more than 2,700 placements approved among almost 800 businesses located in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and other locations. Of these, 2,200 have resulted in vacancies being created and 1,024 of those have now been filled.

Minister for Employment Mims Davies MP said: “It’s fantastic to see that over 1,000 young people have begun their Kickstart journey thanks to the vital support from East Midlands Chamber, in a range of exciting new roles, setting them on the road for their future careers – crucially part of the over 69,000 young people who have now started these jobs.

“Our Plan for Jobs is focused on creating and spreading opportunity just like this around the UK as we push to level up across the country.”

Chesterfield Champions show their support for Mental Health Awareness Week

Today marks the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week, the UK’s national week to raise awareness of mental health.

The week, which is hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, is in its 21st year and runs from 10-16 May. The foundation’s main theme this year is nature, and how connecting with the great outdoors can improve our health both mentally and physically.

Chesterfield Champions have been raising awareness of various mental health initiatives recently, with some carrying out activities to mark the occasion this week.

Surecare Chesterfield 

Surecare has launched a new  training ‘Hail Yourself’ training package with staff this week. The training will talk about various aspects of mental health. The training is not only designed to help the company’s dedicated care staff to look after the service users, but also help them to look after themselves and each other.

Helen Axup, Registered Manager at Surecare said: “Mobility issues stop a lot of people being able to go out and mixing as they would like to. We as a company want to promote ‘a healthy mind helps a healthy body’.

“I am in the perfect position to see first hand how mental health effects various different people, whether it is the people we care for with SureCare, under-appreciated care staff or the people we know socially. It doesn’t matter who they are, we are a human race and we should offer support and understanding. This gave birth to our ‘Hail Yourself’ training because the person you should start with is yourself.”

A brand new VIP lounge has been launched at Chesterfield Royal Hospital to improve the wellbeing offer for staff, with the help of airline or aviation staff who are currently furloughed, grounded or made redundant due to the pandemic.

The crews used their exceptional customer service skills and expertise to provide the hospital staff with a little bit of respite, as well as an opportunity to chat and share experiences.

Mental Health Awareness Week: Heathcotes Group discuss the measures we can take to support good mental health

On Mental Health Awareness Week (10th-16th May 2021), Tom Matthews, HR Business Partner at Heathcotes Group, discusses the impact of the past year and the measures we can take to support good mental health.

The past year looms large in any discussion about mental health. The pandemic has been a cause of stress, anxiety, isolation and grief for communities across the world. Covid has been an unprecedented challenge for care providers, and on behalf of Heathcotes I am incredibly proud of the collective effort of our colleagues who have pulled together to meet this challenge. Our Support Workers, Team Leaders, Service Managers and central functions have shown unwavering dedication in support of some of the most vulnerable individuals in society, at a time when they needed that support more than ever.

The lockdown presented especially difficult circumstances for the individuals that we support. The sudden disruption and restrictions of the pandemic had the potential to have an extremely disturbing and stressful effect on individuals within our care, who have a variety of different needs.

Typifying Heathcotes’ person-centred approach, our services worked together to plan personal arrangements for each individual in our care, providing variations of established routines that were no longer possible in lockdown. The staff were amazingly inventive in coming up with ways to maintain engagement and contact with family members and help the people we support to cope. Our services nationwide arranged all kinds of initiatives, including talent contests, baking contests, photo shoots, rainbow-themed parties, art galleries, newsletters, garden makeovers and numerous other activities and events. Looking back over the past year, their efforts made an enormous difference in helping everyone to manage everyday life and maintain good mental health in the shadow of Coronavirus. They continue to do so as we tentatively approach a return to normality.

In our specialist provision of social care, there is a strong focus on the mental health of the individuals we support, but the wellbeing of our workforce is vital too. The workplace is hugely influential on mental health and organisations have a duty of care to ensure that this environment facilitates wellbeing.

Andy Bell, Deputy Chief Executive at Centre for Mental Health, said: “Work is – on the whole – good for our mental and physical health. However, mental health difficulties are both common and serious, and for a lot of people the places they work can have a big impact on their wellbeing. Companies, large and small, that take mental health seriously and create a mentally healthy environment to work in will benefit from being safer, happier and more productive.”

In any industry or sector, supporting good mental health starts with a culture of communication. There is no doubt that the national conversation around mental health has advanced in recent years, addressing the perceived stigma about discussing our problems, but many people are still uncomfortable about sharing their struggles and asking for help. Due to social conditioning, that reticence is more common amongst men. A survey commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation found that men are far less likely than women to seek professional support, and less likely to disclose a mental health problem to friends and family.

At Heathcotes, we’re proactive in changing attitudes, inspiring and empowering colleagues to feel comfortable about opening up and seeking support. This can encourage conversation in the workplace and educate and enable champions from across our organisation to access support and keep people safe. I’m really proud of our commitment to mental health safeguarding through upskilling, with access to accredited Mental Health First Aid training enabling employees to recognise the signs of colleagues experiencing a crisis and offering appropriate support.

In the past few months, Heathcotes have developed an employee assistance programme with a key emphasis on mental health and wellbeing, which we feel is vital to recognise following one of the most difficult years many of us have faced in our lifetime. It includes 24/7 access to a support team to discuss any matter, and access to expert counsellors providing confidential advice and support for depression or anxiety.

The programme also includes a range of online resources and apps providing lifestyle assistance, including diet and exercise planning, budgeting and physical and emotional wellbeing. Having a robust structure in place will make it easier for our colleagues to manage day-to-day aspects of their personal life, work life and wellbeing. It will also make it easier for our colleagues to reach out in their time of need.

While organisational leadership is essential, we can also make a crucial difference on a personal level. In busy environments like social care, it’s easy to let a working week pass by without taking time to discuss the worries and pressures in our lives. Regardless of your industry, if you suspect a colleague is struggling in silence, ask them how they are feeling. Simple gestures can make a huge difference in helping people to feel comfortable about speaking up.

The pandemic has given us a greater appreciation of the importance of observing and attending to mental health. At Heathcotes, we look ahead to more positive times with a greater understanding of how to look after ourselves and how to look out for others.
