Business Advisory Board for the East Midlands meets for the first time

Business leaders and entrepreneurs from across the region have been appointed to the East Midlands Combined County Authority’s (EMCCA) Business Advisory Board.

Following an extensive recruitment process, 11 business representatives have been recruited to the board, and they met earlier today for the inaugural meeting of the Business Advisory Board, which took place at Bolsover District Council in Derbyshire.

The Business Advisory Board, chaired by David Williams, Chairman of Geldards and EMCCA’s Associate Member for Business, will provide strategy, advice and guidance to the EMCCA Board.

The purpose of the Board is to strengthen the connection between EMCCA and local businesses in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. It will help ensure the experience and knowledge of regional businesses, large and small, is harnessed when making decisions on the economy, skills, transport, housing and the transition to net zero.

At the inaugural meeting, members were provided with an overview of EMCCA’s recently launched Inclusive Growth Commission and discussed how the Business Advisory Board will inform its work. The advisory board members also discussed the current investment strategy and pipeline of development currently underway in the region, providing their input and feedback to the plans outlined.

Two Destination Chesterfield Board Members are also represented on the EMCCA Business advisory board; Scott Knowles, Chief Executive, East Midlands Chamber and Andrew Byrne, Property Development Director, Devonshire Group.

David Williams, Chair of the Business Advisory Board said: “I was delighted to welcome members of the Business Advisory Board to our inaugural meeting earlier today. We had an excellent discussion and heard great contributions from our members, who provide good representation from across our region in terms of sectors, geography, and small, medium and large businesses.”

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “The Business Advisory Board is an important part of our collaboration with our local businesses and I look forward to hearing the views of board members going forward as we progress our work on the Inclusive Growth Commission, and our investment pipeline for our region.”

More than 150 new homes to be built in Mastin Moor

Contracts have been exchanged to enable the building of more than 150 new houses in Mastin Moor, near Chesterfield.

Vistry Group is expected to begin development on land south of Bolsover Road in High Ridding, after exchanging contracts with The Devonshire Property Group.

The 11 acre site, which was previously agricultural land, will provide approximately 165 mixed tenure homes on the second phase of the wider Mastin Moor development, which will eventually deliver 650 homes alongside a local centre with retail and health facilities, as well as a community garden.

Vistry Group has submitted a reserved matters application for 165 homes to Chesterfield Borough Council, with a determination expected in 2025.

Devonshire Property Group has already constructed the main site infrastructure, in addition to an innovative Construction Skills Hub south of the site. The hub will offer sector specific training on the live construction sites in Mastin Moor, providing opportunities for future generations of builders to develop their skills.

Harron Homes occupies phase one of the wider development, building new homes on a 16 acre piece of land to the south west.

Rob Spittles, Managing Director of Vistry East Yorkshire, said: “We are delighted to have exchanged contracts on this parcel of land and to be contributing to the growing community in Mastin Moor. We know there is a need for high-quality homes in the area, as well as properties that offer a mixed-tenure for a variety of buyer needs, and look forward to adding this offering to the wider development in the future.”

Andy Byrne, Director at the Devonshire Property Group, said: “We’re delighted to have Vistry on board to deliver another phase of homes at The Riddings in Mastin Moor. What we really like about Vistry is their mixed tenure model, providing homes for sale, rent and affordable housing. This helps to create a truly sustainable community, something that is important to the Devonshire Group. Once complete the overall development will provide over 50 acres of new parkland, a new local centre and an extension to the existing community gardens. We wish Vistry well with their planning application and look forward to welcoming them on site in 2025.”

Partnership working in Chesterfield leads to more young people taking up careers in STEM

More young people are taking up manufacturing and engineering courses in Chesterfield, according to new figures.

Chesterfield College has reported a phenomenal 80% increase in engineering study enrolments for 16–18-year-old students in the last 3 years.

The figure was released during the annual Made in Chesterfield Festival, in which local businesses invite school pupils to their factories and premises to showcase the range of rewarding careers in STEM sectors.

Destination Chesterfield and Direct Education Business Partnership coordinate the Made in Chesterfield campaign. It is delivered in association with the Chesterfield College Group and supported by Chesterfield Borough Council, EMCCA Careers Hub, MSE Hiller, United Cast Bar Ltd and Natwest.

More than 3,500 school pupils in Chesterfield have now engaged with the town’s manufacturing and engineering businesses since Made in Chesterfield was first launched 10 years ago. This year, students were invited to visit several businesses, including:

  • MSE Hiller
  • Superior Wellness
  • Weightron Bilanciai
  • United Cast Bar
  • The Devonshire Group
  • Penny Hydraulics
  • Aztec Oils
  • Heraeus Electro-Nite
  • Chesterfield Construction Skills Hub

Celebrating its success, Nick Catt, Board Member of Destination Chesterfield and Managing Director of Weightron Bilanciai, commented: “To see more young people enrolling in engineering courses across our town is a testament to the fantastic collaboration between the College and local businesses in recent years.

“We know how vital it is to highlight careers in Manufacturing, not just to help our businesses grow in the future, but to allow our people to thrive in skilled and rewarding jobs. I look forward to seeing further partnerships across our town to keep narrowing the existing skills gaps in our sector.

Julie Richards OBE, Principal and CEO of The Chesterfield College Group added: “We are delighted to see such a significant increase in young people choosing to pursue engineering and manufacturing courses at Chesterfield College.

“This 80% rise in enrolments reflects both the growing interest in STEM careers and the strength of the partnerships we’ve built with local businesses through initiatives like Made in Chesterfield. By working together, we’re ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities they need to thrive in these dynamic industries, helping to secure a prosperous future for Chesterfield and beyond.”

Schools in the area have also expressed their gratitude to businesses for opening their doors to young people. Debbie Crossley, Careers Adviser at The Bolsover School commented: “The Made in Chesterfield tour to MSE Hiller was so informative and insightful, and I really appreciate the team taking the time to speak with our students and explain things in detail.

“The links to the curriculum were fabulous and covered several subjects including English, maths, physics and chemistry.  It was great to see the students relating some of their classroom learning to the skills and knowledge they will need in the workplace.”

Clare Talati, CEO of Direct Education Business Partnership said: “We are thrilled to continue supporting the Made in Chesterfield initiative, which plays a crucial role in connecting young people with local employers.

“By providing meaningful, hands-on experiences, we’re raising awareness of the fantastic career opportunities available right here in Chesterfield. These partnerships not only inspire the next generation, but also help businesses engage with potential future employees, ensuring the local workforce is prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

New café opens its doors at the Healthy Living Centre in Staveley

A new independent café has officially opened its doors in the Healthy Living Centre in Staveley – further boosting facilities for sports centre customers and residents.

The new outlet – called the ‘Coffee Stop’ – has been created on the ground floor of the Chesterfield Borough Council-owned leisure centre.

It is open seven days a week – serving a variety of hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals, and provides a new social place for sports centre customers, and members of the public, to meet-up.

Councillor Steve Lismore, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “This independent café is a great new addition to our centre, and comes just weeks after the newly-refurbished gym was unveiled, boasting a range of state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

“Going to the gym, a fitness class or watching your child’s swimming lesson can be as much about socialising and making new connections, as it is about exercising – and the Coffee Stop provides the perfect place to meet up or enjoy a post-workout refreshment.

“We are delighted to welcome this local business into our centre, and we wish them great success.”

The council had offered the opportunity for a leaseholder to take space in the ground floor of the centre on Barlow Road as part of its plans to both improve local facilities, but to also make the best use of its buildings.

Neil and Maria Butkeraitis, co-owners of the Coffee Stop and who also operate the popular café at Poolsbrook Country Park, said: “We’re so excited to open our doors in the Healthy Living Centre and bring even more facilities for people to enjoy in this hub of the community.

“We’ve already got a great family of customers at our café in Poolsbrook Country Park, and we hope everyone will love the opportunity to enjoy our relaxing atmosphere and tasty menu in this additional new venue.

“We’ve been working hard to get everything ready, and to recruit some new team members – and we look forward to seeing customers old and new in our new home!”

The café is open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm on Saturdays and 9am to 5pm on Sundays, serving a variety of hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals, including vegan and gluten-free options.

New cycling route opens at Markham Vale

A new cycleway has been installed linking Markham Vale business park to Staveley, allowing people working at the site to choose a more sustainable commute.

The 1.37mile (2.2km) cycleway starts just off Markham Lane next to the Environment Centre and ends on the Seymour Link Road.

It was officially opened by Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, Councillor Tony King, who was joined by a group of enthusiastic cyclists who will be regularly using the trail.

Councillor King said: “Another feather in Markham Vale’s cap. This place is a real success story and a phenomenal transformation over just 2 decades.

“Attracting local, national and international business to Derbyshire it stays at the forefront of developing business and industry fit for the future.

“This cycleway is another indicator of our commitment to help deliver green initiatives. At Markham we will also have the Electric Forecourt that can charge 30 electric vehicles simultaneously and state of the art energy efficient new buildings in line with our Net Zero ambitions.”

Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, Councillor Carolyn Renwick said: “Across the county we support many cycling opportunities for both business and leisure. This cycleway is a good example and helps our ambitions to provide more infrastructure for safe and sustainable ways to travel. I hope that it will encourage some of those working at Markham to travel by bike and provide new leisure cycling opportunities for our residents as well.”

The Markham cycleway has cost £750,000 from a funding package of £7 million that was provided by the government in 2023/2024 for local improvements in the East Midlands. The funding was via the East Midlands Combined County Authority Devolution Capital Fund.

Markham Vale is a 200-acre joint venture between the County Council and property developer HBD, part of Henry Boot. Situated off M1 junction 29a it centres around what was the mostly derelict Markham Colliery site. Over the last 20 years it has been transformed into a prime business location. This latest development adds to its attractions and boosts its ambitions to offer sustainable transport options to those working on the site and those cycling for leisure.

Chesterfield’s new board game café is now open

After months of anticipation, Chesterfield’s first dedicated board game café is now open to customers.

Board & Bean will bring people together over games of all types and genres, alongside a helping of food & drink.

Co-owner of the new venue, John McAssey commented: “We are overwhelmed at the positivity received when we first announced this a couple of months ago. The people of Chesterfield and surrounding areas have put their trust in us with many becoming members early to help support our project. We have made an inclusive space for all to come and enjoy, relax and socialise.”

John explains the amount of work that he and his team have put into making the space inclusive and accessible: “The floor has been levelled, ramps added and we raised the floor to ensure easy access to our self contained toilets. The tables and games library have been lovingly crafted by Andy who originally had the idea of opening a board game cafe. The building work has been completed by Clinton to a really high standard and he will be in the cafe day to day to ensure everyone has a great experience. Our private Annex room is also available if you need a space away from the main room.”

Whilst in the process of developing the venue into a warm and friendly space for gaming, the Board & Bean team has also established links within the local business community to help support the local economy.

John added: “Growing up in Chesterfield and seeing what great things our town has to offer really cemented that we need to collaborate with other like minded businesses and entrepreneurs. We have been working hard to create a great community within our entertainment and hobby spaces.

Geeks Headquarters, which offers a one stop shop to get all your gaming needs, have worked with us to provide Board & Bean members with 10% discount on board games. We will be providing Chesterfield Escape Rooms visitors discounts on food and drink. Not forgetting the amazing local groups to provide sessions for people to paint, make comics, play role playing games and a lot more coming soon.

“Our passion project is also focusing on the community working with the Derbyshire Connectors programme bringing people with learning difficulties together. Local groups and charities will be a focus and we are currently working with WORTH, Wee See Hope and Mindsight to provide a space to raise some much needed funds for great causes.

“We love Chesterfield, it is where we have grown up and live. There are some amazing spaces and we want to help shine a light on these while working in partnership. We hope Board & Bean will be an attraction for people to come and visit the town too. Please show your support, we also still do great coffee and cake!”

Regional Green Growth triples in 9 years, says new study

Green Growth activity – environmentally sustainable economic growth – from businesses in the East Midlands is three times higher than it was in 2015.

That is according to joint research published by East Midlands Chamber and the University of Derby.

Green Growth Trends research published this week by the two organisations tracks and analyses awareness and engagement with green growth, decarbonisation, and the uptake of nature-based solutions (NBS), based on responses from businesses in the Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey.

Findings for 2024 reveal a 7% increase from 2023 in East Midlands businesses achieving turnover from the supply of green goods and services, while more than 45% businesses in the region invested in decarbonisation initiatives over the past 12 months, an increase of 6% since 2023.

The research highlights significant difference in Green Growth activity based on the size of a business. Three quarters of large businesses in the East Midlands pursue Green Growth activities but only half of small businesses do, while for micro businesses the figure drops to four out of ten.

Key findings from Green Growth Trends in the East Midlands 2024

  • 7% more businesses derive turnover from the supply of Green Growth goods and services than in 2023
  • 43% of businesses trade in environmentally friendly goods and services
  • Three quarters of large businesses pursue Green Growth, half of small and four out of ten (39%) micro businesses
  • More than 45% businesses invested in decarbonisation initiatives over the past 12 months, up 6% since 2023
  • Seven out of ten large companies invest in decarbonisation
  • Just over 30% of businesses have never engaged in nature-based solutions over the last 12 months
  • Three in ten businesses have no turnover for green goods and services, 10% lower than in 2023

East Midlands Chamber Director of Policy and Insight Richard Blackmore said:

“With COP29 just behind us, the publishing of this report is timely and gives assurance, on one hand that East Midlands businesses are prioritising playing their part in the journey toward Net Zero, while also highlighting how much further they still need to go.

“Smaller businesses tend to be behind larger businesses, according to the findings of this research, where fewer staff and more limited resources may create a greater challenge, but it’s important that firms keep going with that mission toward becoming more sustainable and reducing their carbon footprint.”

Derby Business School Associate Professor of Strategy and Sustainability Dr Polina Baranova said:

“Seeing a 7% lift in East Midlands businesses benefiting financially by actively pursuing Green Growth is really encouraging, especially as there’s limited support nationally for businesses on their Green Growth journey.

“Larger businesses are well on their way, but micro businesses are lagging behind with just four out of ten embracing Green Growth. It’s important that businesses resist ‘climate fatigue’ and don’t pull back from their effort to embrace and gain from Green Growth.

“With 10% fewer businesses engaged in Green Growth than in 2023, the need to keep Green Growth high up the list of priorities is clearly underlined.”
