New town centre café ‘beyond excited’ to open its doors to customers

A new café in Chesterfield town centre promises to provide a ‘warm and friendly service’ to visitors, after recently opening its doors to the public.

Café One is the latest in a range of new independent food and drink businesses in Chesterfield, with the owner aspiring for the venue to become a place for people in the community to relax, drink great coffee while they meet a friend, get work done, or meet a loved one for some lunch.

The Café has an industrial feel, inspired by nature – from the colour scheme to the plants that have been incorporated. The team hopes to have created a place where people feel welcomed and cosy, and leave feeling refreshed with a smile.

Explaining what customers can expect to find on the menu at Café One, owner Bee Jaansoo commented: “We have an extensive drinks menu, offering great coffee, variety of hot drinks, teas, soft drinks and seasonal options.

“We have a selection of European cake and homemade brownies (Vegan & Gluten free available). We also offer toasted tea cakes, cheese and fruit scones, toast (White, brown or rye bread) with an option of butter (dairy free option available) or jam, sausage rolls (English & European version) and MOMA porridge pots (Gluten, sugar free & vegan options available).”

“In the near future we want to offer sugar and gluten free cakes, protein bakes and protein shakes.”

Bee explained why she decided to take the plunge and open a new café in the town, despite having experience in the beauty sector.

“My background is beauty, but it’s something I didn’t want to do. So, I thought about what else I love; coffee and people.  So, that’s how we came up with the idea of opening a Café in Chesterfield town centre, as we live in Inkersall. I love coming to the town centre, so it only made sense to open a café here.

“What I love most about Chesterfield is the people and the community. As Chesterfield has become our home, it made sense to invest locally. Choosing local keeps the town alive and the people in the community thriving.”

Bee has also thanked the Cafe’s staff for helping to get the new venture off the ground. She added: “I want my team to feel proud and happy to be working at Café One. We are a small business, just starting out, but we care about our staff and we want them to feel valued and appreciated. They have been an incredible help in the opening of the café.”

“I am beyond excited and I feel very grateful that I’ve been able to do this work. As I mentioned I love meeting and talking to people, so being able to give something to people that they enjoy and makes them happy makes me happy.”

Chesterfield business earns rare honour of two prestigious Queen’s Awards

Chesterfield based company Imagesound has been recognised with two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, awarded for outstanding achievement by UK businesses.

Imagesound and sister company Musicstyling provide bespoke music and messaging solutions to businesses in over 150 Countries world-wide, from retailers Co-op, Tesco, H&M, adidas and Target, hospitality including McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Caffe Nero through to global hotel chains Marriott, Radisson and IHG.

Chesterfield manufacturer works with chocolatier to produce festive range for John Lewis

Robinson, a Chesterfield-based manufacturer specialising in value-added custom packaging – has teamed up with Holdsworth Chocolates to create a Christmas confectionery range for John Lewis.

The bespoke festive range includes a selection of 100% recyclable rigid boxes, sleeves and treat bags printed in a six-colour design and foil blocked on gold.

Robinson produced the 200g and 400g box and lid on a recently acquired rigid box line. The new equipment – SATE machinery – is based at the site in Chesterfield and offers huge advantages in terms of production and quality of the finished product with savings on fixed production costs, consistency and reliability, and ease of use and maintenance.

Jon Walker, New Business Development Manager at Robinson said: “Producing high quality, creative, engaging packaging for brands and retailers at an affordable price is key. Being an independent company means that we can be flexible to the needs of Holdsworth. We turned around production from design to delivery in just 3-4 weeks.”

David Sharples, Managing Director at Holdsworth Chocolates said: “Whenever we produce packaging, including for special celebrations such as Christmas, we aim to make sure all the materials we use are sustainable and can be recycled.

New retailer open at North Derbyshire shopping destination

Derbyshire-based Coghlans’s Food and Wine Experience has become the latest retailer to open new stores at the revitalised Peak Village in Derbyshire.

Alongside its high quality selection of wines, champagne, and specialist foods, Coghlans will host an ongoing programme of events in its wine and food workshop. ‘Meet the Producers’ events, wine courses and team building events will bring individuals and groups up close to guest chefs as well as artisan food producers of premium quality cheese, honey, coffee and much more; while its wine workshops will include tastings, wine and food pairing, and insights into wine production.

The store opened in early November all ready for the Christmas season at Peak Village, which officially started on the weekend of 26/27 November.

The new store opening follows on from other openings over the past few months and more expected early in the new year. Since spring, the site has added Wild Olive, Lambs Cakes and Bakes, Garden World, Grape Tree and the new modern dining concept Chatsworth Kitchen, which have all proved popular with visitors and driven increased footfall.

Significant investment over the past 18 months has enabled Peak Village to continue growing following its purchase last year by the Devonshire Group, the company that represents the interests of the Devonshire family at nearby Chatsworth.

Situated in the village of Rowsley on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Peak Village hosts nearly 20 shops and employs between 80 and 100 people. Fusion Utilities invests millions in new North Derbyshire site

Following a multi-million-pound investment, Wolseley Infrastructure has announced plans for its Fusion Utilities brand to open a new 160,000-square foot facility in Bolsover, near Chesterfield, just off the M1.

The new Wolseley Infrastructure site will house a wide variety of best-in-class utilities products which will allow the brand to provide better availability than ever to customers.

The new site will be used as a fulfilment centre to deliver stock directly to customers on-time and in-full nationally, as well as providing services such as Hire & Servicing and housing technical services, national sales office and design teams.

Located just off the M1 in Bolsover for easy driver access, the new site is due to be ready in April 2024.

Commenting on the investment, John Hancock, Managing Director at Wolseley UK, says: “This exciting investment has been inspired by our Customer First approach, which has guided our developments ever since Fusion Utilities became part of Wolseley Infrastructure. We believe that the new Chesterfield site will build upon our product and service offerings to provide our customers with an even easier, more streamlined way to meet their utilities needs.”

On top of the massive benefits to customers, the new warehouse will create jobs for residents in Bolsover and the surrounding area. Planning is already underway for the development, with Neal Lambert, Technical Director at Fusion Utilities, and Simon Dennis, National Operations Director, at the helm of the project.

Initial designs include the warehouse combining a green exterior with building features that mirror the natural landscape, visually showcasing Wolseley Infrastructure’s commitment to being environmentally conscious. The site will also include local vegetation to provide a biodiverse habitat, in addition to having attenuation ponds to reduce flood risks.

Neal comments: “This new warehouse marks an exciting time for Fusion Utilities, with our customers, colleagues and suppliers all reaping the countless benefits this site will provide, in a central location with easy motorway access. The team have been working tirelessly to make sure the site meets all our customer requirements and we can’t wait to unveil it in 2024.”

In addition to this announcement, Fusion Utilities have recently announced the launch of their Essential Product Range (EPR), in conjunction with its Civils brand Burdens. This further reinforces their commitment to provide greater stock availability, by enhancing their current offering. New book to showcase scenic walking routes around Chesterfield Canal

The Chesterfield Canal Trust has just published a book of walks along and around the canal, showcasing some of the town’s beautiful scenery.

Entitled ‘Walking along the Chesterfield Canal’, it has 76 pages with lots of maps, photographs and illustrations. It costs £10 and is available from the Trust’s shop at Hollingwood Hub and online from its website – search for Chesterfield Canal Trust.

The book was written by David Blackburn who is a leading light in the Ramblers and who has been the Walks Officer for the Trust for about 25 years.

David said: “I have been walking along the Chesterfield Canal for many years and it has given me a great deal of pleasure. It’s a privilege to be able to share some of the walks I enjoy, and I hope they will give lots of pleasure to other walkers too.

“They vary in length, cover the whole canal towpath and also use footpaths in the surrounding countryside; most are easy, with just a few offering a little more of a challenge in areas where footpaths are less well used.

“I hope users will find the walks in the book both interesting and enjoyable and tempt them to explore parts of the canal they have not visited before.”

The 25 walks are circular and cover the full 46-mile length from Chesterfield to the River Trent. There are two particular features to the book. If you complete all the walks, you will have covered every inch of the towpath. Also, each walk can be combined with the next one in the book, giving longer walk options if you wish.

The walks are very varied. They give the opportunity to enjoy a variety of canal scenery and features and also to explore the paths and tracks, some used relatively infrequently, in the surrounding countryside. You can visit the villages and towns close by.

Some walks, especially on the Derbyshire section, are in a more urban setting and pass through areas once devoted to the industries that made considerable use of the canal. That’s all been swept away, and the canal follows a peaceful green corridor, with only a few scars from past industry remaining.

In South Yorkshire there’s a big flight of locks – more in a mile than any other canal in the country. It’s surrounded by woodland and green fields and is amongst the most attractive lengths of canal in Britain. Some areas, especially beyond Worksop and Retford, have a quite remote feel as the canal passes through miles of agricultural land with several attractive villages close by.

There’s a great deal for lovers of wildlife too, with lots of flowers and trees and many birds – on and out of the water. Kingfishers can be seen regularly, even in the more urban parts beyond Chesterfield. The graceful heron can often be seen looking out for fish for its next meal, whilst in some of the clear water sections, mainly in Nottinghamshire, an abundance of fish can be spotted.

The canal is also home to the water vole, an increasingly threatened species. Do allow yourself time to stand and stare – the walks are best enjoyed if you are not rushed.

The ceremony is set to held at Casa Hotel in Chesterfield, on February 17th, 2023.

The awards evening is a fundraising event at which the local charity BrightLife will acknowledge and celebrate those members of society who have gone above and beyond in their actions to ensure that loneliness and isolation doesn’t occur amongst older people living within Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire.

Midlands Energy Summit shines spotlight on region’s opportunity to become ‘famous’ in future energy agenda

The East Midlands needs to determine which part of the future energy agenda it wants to lead if it is to attract overseas investors, an audience of business leaders heard at a conference.

Speakers at the Midlands Energy Summit, held by East Midlands Chamber in partnership with the University of Nottingham at the Hilton East Midlands Airport hotel today (1 December), emphasised the importance of the region having a clear focus when it comes to prioritising various energy strands.

Nora Senior, chair of the East Midlands Freeport, said becoming “famous” for an aspect of the green economy will help to establish clusters of businesses to accelerate innovation and create new jobs, while demonstrating a local commitment to achieving net zero will help to attract inward investment.

Many of the solutions will come from academic research and the University of Nottingham’s vice-chancellor Professor Shearer West CBE, as well as Sustainable Hydrogen Centre for Doctoral Training director Professor Gavin Walker, showcased some of its work in the areas of transport and mobility, energy generation and management, and communities and the built environment.

East Midlands Chamber director of policy and external affairs Chris Hobson said: “With our industrial heritage, world-class research in our universities, central location and the UK’s busiest cargo airport, our region has all the raw ingredients required to be a national and international leader in the net zero economy.

“This is why we are calling the East Midlands a Centre of Trading Excellence in our new Business Manifesto for Growth, which was launched in Westminster last week and calls for Government ‘to back the East Midlands to back the UK’.

“We believe there is plenty to get behind here but there is also a lot for us to think about as a region. The East Midlands Freeport offers a fantastic opportunity to create a name for ourselves on a global stage but as we heard during the Midlands Energy Summit, we need to consider what the focus should be – whether it’s in hydrogen, battery production or aerospace, for example.

“It’s also important that as a region, we demonstrate a commitment to growing our competitiveness in the right way as this is what investors across the world want to see when they decide where to throw their backing.

“More broadly, energy security is a hot topic for many organisations as our research tells us the number one concern for businesses right now is rising energy costs, which is also the main driver of inflation.

“Businesses are eager to work in partnership with Government and the energy industry to develop a long-term energy strategy that gives them certainty about security of supply and minimises costs, which will enable firms to get on with doing what they do best in creating wealth and opportunities locally.”
