‘The Boutique Outlet’ is the Latest Pop-Up to Join Vicar Lane

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre, Chesterfield is excited to announce the arrival of yet another new name to the centre.

‘The Boutique Outlet’ is a ladieswear pop-up, stocking popular brands such as French Connection, Masai, Mos Mosh, Salsa (jeans), Cream, Great Plains, Fransa and Postcard, always up to 80% off recommended retail price.

The boutique offers high quality fashion with a mix of formal, casual and occasion wear. Accessories such as scarves and handbags, as well as Lexus shoes, are also available.

The Boutique Outlet is situated on Steeplegate at Vicar Lane (opposite Qoozies), and is open Monday – Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

Both venues are now open to customers following the latest easing of lockdown restrictions across the UK.

It also coincides with the current Love Chesterfield campaign, which is aimed at supporting the town’s retail and hospitality sectors by raising awareness of shopping and eating locally, along with re-discovering some of the town’s best-loved visitor attractions. People and businesses are being encouraged to use the hashtag #LoveChesterfield on social media to spread the word.

Chesterfield Escape Rooms celebrates official opening

Chesterfield Escape Rooms has officially opened to the public, after the highly-anticipated visitor attraction was given the green light by the easing of covid-19 restrictions.

There are a number of games to choose from at the venue, with the aim of solving the puzzles and escaping the room before the time runs out.

An official ribbon cutting was carried out on Monday (17th May) by Chesterfield’s mayor, Cllr Glenys Falconer who enjoyed a game of ‘Rob The Bank’ during her visit.

Nick Hogan, owner of Chesterfield Escape Rooms said: “It’s been a few months in the planning but it has finally happened, we’re open for business! Our original objective was to put a smile back on the face of Chesterfield and give the town centre a new focus and I think we have achieved it.

“We are only small cog in the amazing amount of positive activity taking place around the town, but nevertheless the feedback we are getting from the games is fantastic.”

The Escape Rooms now employs 15 staff on a mixture of permanent, Kickstart and casual contracts. They are all trained to ensure customers feel safe and enjoy their experience.

Nick continued: “What i have loved so far is watching teams from the Games Masters area, having fun. To see people together, smiling, laughing, joking and having fun has made the setting up of the business worthwhile. Our social reviews on trip advisor, Facebook and Google have been unbelievable and testament to the pride and hard work that all of the team put in to each game.”

“So many people i have spoken to have advised they have never played or even considered playing an escape room but have decided to support the business and give it a go. The very same people are the ones I love watching the most. One lady, who, in reception asked lots of questions due to her lack of understanding, was seen doing a full on fist pump when she solved her first clue!!”

“We really want our customers to embrace our different themes and experience all of the games and wow are some of them competitive! We have launched a set of monthly leader boards which are advertised in reception, starting the concept of being an ‘Escape Room Legend’ to get into our all-time Hall of Fame! A player must have successfully completed all three games to enter!”

Businesses called on to enter new Love Chesterfield Awards 2021

Entrepreneurship, sustainability and community contribution from businesses will be recognised in the brand-new Love Chesterfield Awards 2021.

The search is now on to find the businesses and organisations that deserve recognition for their efforts over the last 12 months.

Entries are now being invited for four business categories in the Love Chesterfield Awards 2021.

Businesses, projects and individuals are invited to enter Entrepreneur of the Year (sponsored by Banner Jones Solicitors), the Sustainability Award, Community Contribution and Apprentice of the Year (sponsored by DBC Training) categories.

The introduction of the Sustainability Award is part of the combined efforts across Chesterfield to become carbon neutral. It will reward firms that have implemented positive changes over the past two years, which have resulted in significant benefits for the business.

Recognising the importance of helping start-up businesses in the town, the winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award will also receive a package of practical support. Category sponsor Banner Jones Solicitors’ will provide 10 hours of free mentoring with its commercial and employment law specialists and Destination Chesterfield will fund 12 months of marketing support through its Chesterfield Champions scheme.

Launched this month by Destination Chesterfield in association with EntireFM – Complete Facilities Management, the new Love Chesterfield Awards aims to recognise the contribution that all consumer facing businesses and organisations make to the high street – from retailers and food and drink businesses to estate agents, charities and accountants and everything in between.

Shortlisted businesses will be evaluated by a mystery panel of judges before the winners are announced on Wednesday 20 October.

Subject to COVID restrictions being lifted, the award organiser, Destination Chesterfield plans to host a black-tie ceremony at the Winding Wheel Theatre in October, bringing together the town’s business, retail and hospitality communities.

Local magazine group Heron Publications launches sixth title, ‘So Bolsover Magazine’

Expanding its coverage of the north Derbyshire district, magazine company Heron Publications has launched a brand new title – its sixth.

And a particularly busy month for the family-run company has also seen the printing of its largest ever publication.

‘So Bolsover’ magazine is the newcomer and 6,500 copies have been delivered free of charge to homes and businesses in and around the town. A bi-monthly glossy A4 title, the first edition has been particularly warmly welcomed by individuals, businesses and organisations.

It features plenty of relevant news, features and pictures from the Bolsover area, including columns by Town Mayor Paul Goodwin and Bolsover MP Mark Fletcher.

Said director Mike Firth: “It may seem a strange time to expand our business just as we are hopefully coming out of a pandemic, but the local community – through Old Bolsover Town Council – was very keen for us to launch one of our magazines in the area just as businesses are working hard to get back on their feet.

“They had seen Heron Publications’ titles in other towns and villages and wanted one of their own.”

Meanwhile, publication of the ‘Dronfield Eye 2021 Directory’ has been slightly delayed this year, but it has certainly been worth waiting for with a bumper 150-page edition due to land on doormats this week.

Vicar Lane and its independent businesses support local work experience programme

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre, Chesterfield is once again proud to be working with Derbyshire Adult Community Education Services (DACES), to develop a work experience programme, this time with the support of the centre’s independent retailers.

The programme, put together by Shaun Brown, Centre Manager of Vicar Lane, will see five learners from Shirebrook and Clay Cross working in independent shops, as well as the Centre Management office, at Vicar Lane.

The aim of the programme is to bridge the gap between education and the real world of work, with the learners receiving meaningful interactions with employers.

Qoozies, Shop Indie, Nana B Baby & Childrenswear and Gorilla Garms are all getting involved in the programme.

The work experience programme is scheduled to start in May, with the learners working one day per week across ten weeks. The learners are currently studying a Customer Service qualification, and will be assessed whilst on their placements at the shopping centre.

Vicar Lane’s partnership with DACES began in 2019, and continues to grow, with Shaun Brown also planned to take part in the learners’ upcoming mock interviews, to help them overcome the nerves and build confidence.

BHP announces relocation plans to Chesterfield’s Waterside development

Local accountancy firm BHP has announced plans to open a new office in the Chesterfield Waterside development – one of the UK’s largest regeneration schemes.

The move to the innovative and sustainable £320 million Waterside scheme will allow for the expansion of the BHP team as they actively recruit in a number of roles.

Construction of the seven storey Grade ‘A’ office building, One Waterside Place, began last year. The steel frame is now complete, and the building will be made watertight and undergo an internal fit-out before businesses move in later this year.

Joint Managing Partner, Lisa Leighton, said: “Despite the wider economic uncertainty of the past year, our team has continued to grow, and Chesterfield has always been an important location for us.

“Waterside is a fantastic regeneration project and offers us a really exciting opportunity to provide first class office facilities for our team and also get behind transformational investment in the area.”

Built across 16 hectares on the edge of Chesterfield town centre, the development will transform the remains of the old Trebor and Arnold Laver factories and create a thriving and successful canal-side environment. The site will include housing, shops, bars, a hotel, an outdoor event venue, an ecological park and a canal basin marina.

With both the commercial and residential elements underway, Chesterfield Waterside is already becoming an enviable address to live and work.

Lisa Leighton continued: “Going forwards we expect most of our teams to adopt a seamless blend of office and home working in which the office will be a place for collaboration, sharing ideas, meeting clients, and for all our people to grow and develop.

“The building will be set within an attractive landscaped area and connected to a high-quality public square featuring the newly constructed canal basin.

“As well as state-of-the-art work space, we’re planning on off-setting our carbon footprint across the whole office and staff will benefit from commuter friendly walking and cycle paths, as well as good access to Chesterfield’s mainline train station.

‘Escape the everyday’ campaign launched in Derbyshire to boost holiday bookings

The county’s official tourist board, Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire has launched a new ‘Escape the Everyday’ campaign, supported by funding from VisitEngland, to help local tourism and hospitality businesses recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Visitors are being encouraged to Escape the Everyday on a unique range of bookable experiences in the area as part of the £70,000 campaign, which aims to support the sector’s recovery by promoting short breaks and boosting visitor spend.

The campaign has kicked off with a short video and branded content across social media, digital display and radio advertising. The content also drives online ‘traffic’ to visitpeakdistrict.com/escape-the-everyday, where visitors can book a range of activities and experiences across the Peak District & Derbyshire.

Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire has worked with local tourism businesses to create engaging content for the campaign centred around the themes of ‘Discovery’, ‘Freedom to Explore’ and ‘Treat Yourself’.

Experiences include walking with alpacas, feeding lemurs at a local wildlife park, foraging for wild ingredients on a fine dining experience, short breaks at luxury spa hotels and enjoying a rock-climbing taster day in the Peak District National Park.

The campaign will target pre-school families and young couples and is funded by the VisitEngland Destination Management Organisations’ Recovery Marketing Fund, which supports recovery during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Derbyshire Institute of Sport continues support of mental health in the workplace

A Derbyshire Institute of Sport project to put health and wellbeing at the heart of its support for the business community has proved a winner, with more than 100 people joining a mental health webinar about the importance of switching off from work and de-stressing.

The webinar, by DIS sports psychology lead Dr Phil Clarke, was the latest in a series of monthly, 30-minute ‘lunch and learn’ webinars available exclusively to businesses who sponsor the Community Interest Company.

Managing director Chloe Maudsley explained: “During the first lockdown of 2020, we wanted to explore how we could use the skills, knowledge and experience of our team to help the businesses whose support makes our work possible.

“When we were founded in 2012, our original goal was to increase the number of Derbyshire-based, world-class athletes. Our target of developing 20 such champions by 2020 was achieved in February last year, just before lockdown. We knew there was great potential to use the skills of our psychology, nutrition and strength and fitness coaches to work with businesses too.

“As the pandemic continued it was clear that the uncertainty, anxiety and anguish caused by the pandemic and life in lockdown was wreaking havoc on the mental health of many people. We knew we had to help.”

The result was the Thrive sponsorship programme, which has health and wellbeing benefits at the heart of its offer. There are three different Thrive Sponsorship packages so there’s something to suit businesses of all sizes. As well as the webinars, other benefits include nutrition consultations, online exercise classes, monthly wellbeing check-ins and online physiotherapy screenings.

New ‘Garden Oasis’ open for Children at Kids Planet Sheepbridge

A brand-new outdoor garden oasis and forest school area have opened at Kids Planet Sheepbridge, one of five centres operated by the childcare firm in the Chesterfield area.

The well thought out garden environment offers children at the nursery on Dunston Trading Estate, Foxwood Road, the opportunity to explore and discover the natural world.

Designed and created in partnership with Newby Leisure, the garden, which includes a herb planting area, natural water features, mud kitchen and sandpit offers children a space full of sensory richness and away from technology.

Nursery Manager, Sarah Jones who believes it is essential for children to have the opportunity to spend time outdoors to build an important connection with the natural world said: ‘We were honoured here at Kids Planet Sheepbridge to have the Mayor of Chesterfield attend our setting. She spoke about the amazing charities she supports, which as a setting, we hope to raise funds for in the future.  The team have put in an incredible amount of work to create our fabulous outdoor space and the children are loving the time spent in their new outdoor environment”.

Speaking at the opening, The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Glenys Falconer said: “I was honoured to be invited to officially open the new outdoor area at Kids Planet Day Nursery Sheepbridge.  The staff were professional and informative, and I was amazed by the standard of the new high quality, stimulating environment provided by the nursery.  Kids Planet Sheepbridge is a lovely place for children to attend, and I look forward to hearing more about the Forest School classes they are running.”

After what has been a challenging time during the pandemic, the new awards will celebrate the town’s food and drink and retail businesses, entrepreneurs, regeneration projects, contribution to the local community, apprenticeships and sustainability.

And because the high street and hospitality businesses recognised in the Love Chesterfield Awards are all at the heart of the community, Destination Chesterfield is asking people to nominate who they think should win one of these prestigious awards.

“The new Love Chesterfield Awards recognises all sectors of the business community and the role everyone has played in the town’s economic survival and recovery from the pandemic.

There are 16 categories in total in the new Love Chesterfield Awards 2021, however people can nominate across 12 categories:

• Café of the Year
• Food Producer of the Year – sponsored by MSE Hiller
• Accessibility Award – sponsored by Spirecross Ltd
• Best New Hospitality Business – sponsored by Shorts Chartered Accountants
• Retailer of the Year – sponsored by East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire)
• Excellence in Customer Service
• Market Trader of the Year
• Best New High Street Business – sponsored by Chesterfield College Group
• Independent High Street Business of the Year

Other categories in the Love Chesterfield Awards 2021 include the Sustainability Award, Community Contribution, Entrepreneur of the Year and Apprentice of the Year.
