World Environment Day 2023 – How are Chesterfield businesses helping to combat climate change?

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day (5th June 2023), we’ve been finding out how Chesterfield Champions are helping to reduce their carbon footprint, to support the town’s net-zero targets.

Chesterfield understands it has a long journey ahead. But our businesses appreciate the level of commitment needed to achieve our long-term goals and agree on the value of our collective change.

Every improvement we make benefits the health of our people and our environment, and strengthens our local economy.

Chesterfield Borough Council recently set out the groundwork for the borough to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, by adopting a new climate change strategy.

The new strategy is based on six central themes, focusing on where the council can have the biggest impact. These themes influence the further reduction of Chesterfield Borough Council’s own emissions*, while supporting others to do the same.

So, how are local organisations playing their part?

Addooco is tremendously focused on the environment and sustainability. We’ve had our ISO14001 for Environmental Management Systems in place for several years now. In addition, by the end of 2023, we will be PAS2060 certified for carbon neutral.

“There are many other initiatives that feed into this too, including our EV charging points at our offices. All our company cars are electric, and all the energy we procure is renewable.”

“We accept that steel might not sound like the most sustainable material. However, with plenty of examples of installations that have lasted many years, and still look as good as new, installing once in a generation is better than needing to go back to replace time and again. That is all down to the quality of our products.”

“We banished plastic bags about 5 years ago, choosing to recycle cardboard wine boxes instead. We focus on organic wines which have less impact on the environment, as well as preferring winemakers who have Fairtrade credentials.

“Two years ago, we invested in an electric cargo bike and trailer for local deliveries. In some cases when the weather is awful, we use an electric plugin car. Additionally, all our hamper and gift packaging is reusable and biodegradable.”

“As a law firm that used to rely heavily on paper, Banner Jones has made huge improvements over the last 2 years. Most of our departments are now classed as ‘paper light’.

“Consequently, most client communications are now done via email and via a secure online portal. In addition, it benefits the speeding up of transactions for the client, as they are no longer waiting for letters to arrive in the post.

“We have also had recycling bins in our offices for several years, helping to reduce general waste.”

“Like many businesses, we are striving to become net zero. We have made changes to our packaging to use 100% recyclable materials. Another step we have taken to help the environment includes the introduction of fully electric company vehicles.

“We are always looking at ways of improving our housing product from a sustainability perspective. Our latest development (The Shrubberies on Newbold Road, Chesterfield) uses the Wondrwall technology system within each dwelling.

“Wondrwall is a home energy management system. It comprises home automation, gas-free heating, renewable energy assets and a machine learning platform to reduce energy bills and wastage.”

“At Rosewood, we are proud to be an ISO 14001 accredited company. Protecting our planet for future generations, the certification prompts us to minimise our impact on the environment by actively adopting our working style to become more sustainable.

“In an attempt to reduce our carbon emissions, clients visiting the office are welcome to use our Electric Vehicle Charging (EVC) point. Believing that we have a responsibility to care for the planet, our directors have also invested in electronic equipment to reduce paper usage when signing documents. By making these changes, Rosewood hopes to contribute towards a brighter, greener future.”

“Our Electric project journey began in 2019 and has now extended to hydrogen. We have set an ambitious target to become a Net Zero business by 2025, with a fully electric and now hydrogen fleet.

“As part of this, we are also working on a charging infrastructure project to host a range of electric charging hubs across various sites. This is to support the local community and our drivers, as people make the transition to Electric.

“We have also trialed three hydrogen cars in partnership with Peak Resort and Toyota. The partnership is working hard to increase the number of cars on the road with a vision of taking emissions out of the environment.”

“All our company vehicles in the next few months will be hybrid. This will reduce our annual expenditure on fossil fuels, and migrate towards an eco-friendlier business. We research technological advancements and try to integrate these for many of the companies we work with; keeping them at the forefront of technology.

“We have the ability to upcycle, and supply refurbished computers and technology to reduce our overall carbon footprint. We monitor device uptime for the companies we support, letting them know the carbon footprint they leave.”

“We’ve moved to an energy-efficient building and are making use of public transport and the cycle network when commuting.”

Master Debonair is working with a charity called Suitability. It provides suits to people who are looking for employment, but don’t have appropriate clothing suitable for an interview.

“This is supporting people in helping them to gain employment. At the same time, people are re-using products instead of letting them go to waste.”

“At Belvedere House we take being as sustainable as possible incredibly seriously. We have energy-saving champions at all our homes, who work hard to promote and maintain ways of working to reduce the amount of energy used.

“We’re keen to reduce our energy use and take weekly meter readings so we can monitor our changes. We try and recruit people within the local area so they are able to walk or cycle to work. In addition, we are looking into investing in an electric car charging point.

“We use recycled paper throughout the home. Our talented chefs work hard to ensure all food waste is kept to a minimum, and work closely with our food supplier regarding eco-friendly packaging as well as returning all used cooking oil to be recycled.”

“Over the last year, SDE Group have expanded on a new sector of the business. We are now responsible for installing and maintaining EV car chargers up and down the electric highway.

“Chargers are now installed at our head office to encourage our staff to switch to hybrid and electric vehicles. We have also recently invested in Solar Panels on our office roof to become more energy efficient.”

“As a business, we are focused on sustainability and with innovation being one of our brand values. Every time we innovate we think about the environment and what we can do to be more sustainable.

“In our warehouse, we have installed solar panels, have electric forklifts and have reviewed our waste strategy. We also have a couple of charging points for vehicles and over the next few years this number will increase.

“Our latest sustainability initiative was to replace all bulbs with LEDs. This has saved 67% in energy costs which have increased significantly recently.”

‘Broker of the year’ award for Chesterfield’s Mortgage 1st

A Chesterfield-based mortgage broker is celebrating after winning a prestigious industry award.

The team at Mortgage 1st were delighted when they found out earlier in the year that they had reached the final 5 in the Broker Firm of the Year (11-50 employees) category in the 2023 Financial Reporter Awards.

Directors Jon & Lisa Stones, along with Head of Growth Paul Lewis were invited to attend the awards ceremony on the 11th of May at Alexandra Palace in London where Mortgage 1st were announced as the winner.

Mortgage 1st were described by the judges as “ones to watch in the future, brilliant growth and market engagement”.

The Financial Reporter Awards aims to recognise and support a changing industry by promoting good practice and excellent service.

Operations Director Lisa Stones said: “we are absolutely over the moon to have won and for our team to be recognised with this industry award. To reach the finals or shortlist in a national award is amazing enough but to then go on and win is an incredible feeling and testament to team.”

And the good news doesn’t end there for the Mortgage 1st team, who are also shortlisted as a finalist in the Best Mortgage Broker (8-50 advisers) category in this year’s Mortgage Strategy Awards.

The prestigious awards ceremony is taking place on the 25th of May in London where the winners will be announced.

And they say things come in 3’s… Managing Director Jon Stones has also just been announced as a finalist and down to the final 3 in the British Mortgage Awards in the Business Leader: Broker (11-50 advisers) category.

Collaboration leads to eye-catching display at Chesterfield Waterside

Two Chesterfield Champions have collaborated with Chesterfield Borough Council to deliver an attention-grabbing display in and around the Basin Square area of the Chesterfield Waterside scheme.

FWD: Motion, a creative agency based in Chesterfield, managed the branding, design, manufacture, and installation of the new perimeter display at Basin Square working alongside Bolsterstone Group PLC which is delivering the Waterside scheme with Chesterfield Borough Council.

The new site display builds on the brand redevelopment and website build for Chesterfield Waterside which FWD Motion completed in 2019.

Chesterfield Waterside is one of the UK’s largest regeneration schemes; a £340 million sustainable development set in a canal-side environment. Waterside is built across 16 hectares with phase 1 of the development, known as Basin Square, delivering Grade A office space, a hotel, apartments, and a multi-storey car park.

Phase one at Basin Square recently saw the completion and opening of One Waterside Place, a seven-storey large floorplate office funded by Chesterfield Borough Council.

The new display, which features 190 meters of printed and cut vinyl 8x4ft di bond aluminium hoarding boards with protective anti-graffiti laminate, showcases the high quality office space available within the building.

Already two floors of One Waterside Place have tenants – BHP Chartered Accountants and luxury women’s leisurewear company Varley’s, and the new eye-catching display boards are helping to attract the attention of prospective tenants.

Tom Swallow, Development Manager at Bolsterstone Group PLC commented: “It was a pleasure to work with FWD Motion as always on the design of the hoardings. They worked with us to deliver a quality product which compliments the high quality public realm at Chesterfield Waterside. They are helping to create a lot of interest from prospective tenants and investors in both the office building and forthcoming developments at Basin Square and the wider Waterside scheme.”

Rosewood Wealth Management supports local artists by sponsoring the Chesterfield Postcard Show

Chesterfield’s Rosewood Wealth Management is joining forces with Junction Arts this spring to help it stage an exhibition of mini masterpieces that will raise money for the local arts charity.

The Brimington Road financial advice firm is sponsoring The Chesterfield Postcard Show 2023, an annual event that gives local people, communities and up and coming artists the opportunity to showcase their work at an exhibition in West Studios.

Last year 70 artists took part, and 131 postcard-size pieces were exhibited.  The exhibition celebrates the importance of getting creative and its impact on people’s self-esteem and well-being.  The event is organised by Junction Arts and local artist Dave Elsom and the theme for 2023 is Wish You Were Here.  They are inviting people locally, from across the UK, and Internationally to create their own postcard piece of art and submit it by the 20th of April 2023.

Rosewood Wealth Management was founded in 2019 by Directors Shannan Pool-Gorman and Donna Robertson, it has since grown to become one of North Derbyshire’s most respected financial advice firms.  They offer services including mortgages, equity release, pensions, investments, and insurance.

Incredible donation for Ashgate Hospice from football fundraisers

Two stalwart Sunday football league referees who have been donating their match fees to Ashgate Hospice were invited to Chesterfield FC where they handed over their donation pitch side.

Chris Roberts and Bruce Baskerville, from Chesterfield, have refereed thousands of semi-pro and non-league matches between them and decided to start donating a percentage of the fees they receive for officiating games.

The duo, both aged 64, have now raised more than £4,100 for the North Derbyshire hospice in just over 12 months.

Word of their kind-heartedness soon caught the attention of the local football fraternity and teams started voluntarily adding a donation of £5 or £10 as a gesture from their club.

They were invited to the Spireites’ match at home to Notts County on 11 February where they presented the money raised to Ashgate’s Community Fundraiser, Lynn Jones.

“We have made a commitment to ourselves that we won’t ask for any donations – that’s our mantra,” said Chris.

“We have been overwhelmed by the way our little story has caught the attention of the local football community, our friends and family.

“To begin, we just made a comment on our Facebook pages to highlight that we had raised another few pounds for the hospice and in just a matter of weeks people were offering us donations.

“We also noticed that when we arrived to do our matches some teams would voluntarily add a further £5 or £10 to our fee as a gesture from their club.”

Chris and Bruce wanted to help the hospice as they believe everyone in Chesterfield has an “affinity” with the hospice after being touched by its “amazing” care.

Bruce says they also want to improve the reputation of referees as well as the relationship they have with clubs, coaches, players and supporters.

“Last season I refereed a first division game in the Chesterfield Sunday League and sent the home team’s best player off,” he said.

“After the game they asked me to come into the home dressing room. I was expecting an earful and thought they’d end up throwing the match fee on the floor.

“They ended up paying me the £30 for reffing the game and then matching my fee for a donation to Ashgate.”

The money will help Ashgate Hospice care for families at its Inpatient Unit in Old Brampton, Chesterfield, as well as in their own homes across North Derbyshire.

Ashgate’s Lynn Jones, said: “We’re so grateful for the support of Chris and Bruce and everyone else in the local football community that’s supported their fundraiser.

“It’s so inspiring to hear how they’ve managed to turn a hobby of theirs into something that’s going to help families who need our vital support across North Derbyshire.

“I’m looking forward to following their fundraising venture over the coming season!”

Chesterfield’s Rose Cottage Doggy Day Care helped to put smiles on the faces of customers recently, by giving Mothers Day cards and cupcakes to the centre’s ‘Pup Parents.’

Dawn Brown, Founder of Rose Cottage explained: “Being a mum is a special privilege – we don’t all have human babies, some have fur babies!

“No matter what type of mum you are we appreciate you and we made Mother’s Day cards to make our mums smile and show our appreciation.”

Angela Doyle joins Robinson from Berry Plastics and previously Constantia Group where she worked in the flexibles sector in both the UK and Ireland in commercial sales, primarily in the food and beverage sector. Looking forward to her role as a New Business Development Manager at Robinson, Angela highlighted: “I have a strong technical and commercial skill set, working closely with customers and production on development, problem solving and meeting deadlines.  I have always enjoyed being part of a team, leading innovation and out of the box thinking.”

Junction Arts announces new Managing Director

Award-winning participatory arts charity, Junction Arts has appointed Emily Bowman, the current Deputy CEO for The Mighty Creatives, as its new Managing Director.

Emily will join the Chesterfield-based charity on the 1st of April and is tasked with helping the team to deliver an ambitious programme of creative events and initiatives throughout 2023. She will lead the charity to deliver its vision, support the Arts Council England’s ‘Let’s Create’ strategy and will be responsible to the Board on all matters of strategy, policy development and management.

Junction Arts has engaged communities across Bolsover District, North East Derbyshire, Chesterfield and rural areas of the East Midlands for over 45 years.   Following an uplift in National Portfolio Funding (NPO) from the Arts Council until 2026, the charity has aspirations for significant growth and is hoping to embark on a number of exciting partnership projects over the next three years.

Emily is currently the Deputy CEO for The Mighty Creatives, a children and young people’s charity based in Leicester and Arts Council England’s Bridge organisation for the East Midlands.  She has worked in the creative sector for 20 years and at a senior leadership level since 2015. Through her background and training in performance and her work in arts leadership, she has a deep understanding and passion for arts, culture, and creativity, specifically focused on young audiences, with experience in co-producing high-quality programmes that are accessible to all.

She said: “I am thrilled to be joining Junction Arts. I am excited to be leading such a vibrant and dedicated team and will do all I can to continue to grow and develop the organisation, building on its current success and supporting more people to engage, and creativity to thrive across our communities.”

Chesterfield firm named as one of Europe’s fastest growing companies for the second year running

Chesterfield-based Superior Wellness has earnt a place on the FT 1000: the seventh annual list of Europe’s fastest-growing companies for the second year running.

On 1 March 2023, the latest FT-Statista report was released highlighting the fastest-growing European companies in the three years to 2021. Superior Wellness is delighted to have earnt a place on this list, ranking 323rd up from 348th last year. This also means the company has ranked in the top 60 across the UK.

Superior Wellness leads the market as the world’s fastest growing hot tub manufacturer, creating premium, high quality products focused on improving your health and well-being.

The ranking shows how many businesses thrived despite the pandemic — or, in many cases, because of it. Superior Wellness was in a fortunate position to experience a monumental level of growth during the pandemic.

The ranking lists those European companies that achieved the highest compound annual growth rate in revenue between 2018 and 2021. The minimum average growth rate required to be included on the list was 36.2 per cent — marginally less than the 36.5 per cent last time round.

Superior Wellness moved into its headquarters in Chesterfield in March 2021 and last year opened a 10,000 sq. ft showroom with training facilities. Custom Solar completes rooftop installation at neighbouring manufacturing business, Weightron Bilanciai

A Chesterfield solar installation business has recently completed a project with one of it’s neighbours, improving the sustainable energy use of one of our town’s manufacturing firms.

The team at Custom Solar say they are proud to have recently completed thr Solar PV Installation for Weightron Bilanciai, on Chesterfield Industrial Estate.

The 57kWp system was installed using 115 Solar PV Panels, allowing 48,019kWh of green energy to be generated per annum for the client.

During the delivery period of this project, Custom Solar’s operations team had to work particularly cautiously as they faced the challenging weather conditions of frosty December mornings. Their health and safety team closely monitored the situation daily and assured it was safe for the installation team to proceed with works. Monitoring the environment daily meant Custom Solar were able to complete the install successfully with no complications, maintaining their 10-year incident free Health and Safety record.

Nick Catt, Managing Director at Weightron stated, “Custom Solar were able to deliver a solution that meets our current requirements, yet has the capacity to be expanded in the future if required, a seamless project from enquiry to completion.”

Get involved, collaborate and make change happen conference tells Chesterfield businesses

Chesterfield businesses have been urged to take action if they want to make a difference to the town’s future.

Speaking at the annual Celebrate Chesterfield Conference on Thursday 2 March, organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with Addooco IT, Peter Swallow, Chair of the town’s inward investment marketing campaign Destination Chesterfield, called on businesses to ‘get involved,’ ‘collaborate’ and ‘make change happen’ to ensure the town achieves its transformational growth strategy by 2030.

He said: “We have a network of more than 200 businesses, charities and education providers in Chesterfield, known as Chesterfield Champions, and the people in these organisations do so much to support Destination Chesterfield to market the town as a destination to invest, work, live and visit. But if we want to see the town thrive in an increasingly competitive market, we need to do even more collectively. We must collaborate and buy from each other and we must champion Chesterfield outside the area in order to help us bring investment into the borough and create highly skilled jobs.”

Launched on 23 February by Chesterfield Borough Council, key headline targets of the Chesterfield Growth Strategy include:

  • Increasing the number of employee jobs in the borough by 4% (2,000 jobs).
  • Increasing the number of businesses by 12% (400 businesses).
  • Increasing the number of higher value businesses by 15% (100 businesses).
  • Increasing the share of Chesterfield residents in knowledge-based occupations by 15% (baseline Census 21 – 18,000).
  • Increasing the value of the visitor economy by 20% (baseline £163m).

Speaking about the ambitious strategy at the conference, Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “Bringing together the public, private and community sectors to champion our borough is key to achieving our ambitions and strengthening the local economy. As a council we have continued to bring investment into the area from central government and elsewhere.

“Earlier this year we announced our success in bringing almost £2.7 million of UK Shared Prosperity Funding into the borough, a comprehensive spending plan is in place that will provide training support, grant programmes for businesses and charities, as well as helping to make further improvements to green spaces, sports and play facilities across our borough.

“We have secured more than £45 million from the government, this will be used to invest in the future of Staveley but also to improve Chesterfield town centre and enhance our appeal to visitors.

“Looking to the future there is more than £2 billion of investment across our borough and this will help ensure that we have a bright future ahead of us but there is still more we can do and working with the Chesterfield Champions we look forward to promoting our borough as the place to live, work, visit and invest.”

As well as being Chair of Destination Chesterfield, Mr Swallow is also Managing Director of Bolsterstone Group Plc, the company leading the private/public £340million Chesterfield Waterside regeneration scheme.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s Growth Strategy will see further investors like Bolsterstone Group and Devonshire Group attracted to the borough which currently has more than £2 billion of regeneration in the pipeline.

The Devonshire Group is behind the future residential development and regeneration of 150 hectares of former industrial land in the Staveley and is also partnering with Chesterfield Borough Council, Chesterfield College and the University of Derby in delivering the Construction Skills Hub. This is funded through the Staveley Town Deal and will provide training, careers insights, and work experience for more than 5,000 learners on a live construction site over 10 years.

In addition to site and bench joinery, brickwork, ground works and electrical installation the Hub will also provide training in green technologies.

The annual Celebrate Chesterfield conference, which was attended by more than 250 members of the town’s businesses community, also saw the launch of the new Destination Chesterfield plan, which will position the borough as a desirable and contemporary destination for visitors, investors and residents.

The new plan places the town’s network of Champions at the forefront, having been recently praised by the UK’s leading place branding, place marketing and place making specialist Thinking Place, as a ‘sales force’ for the town.

Peter Swallow added: “The financial support of the town’s Champions is incredibly important to ensure events such as Celebrate happen. New films explain why firms choose to invest in Derbyshire

A series of short films have been produced featuring businesses from across Derbyshire explaining why they have decided to invest in the county.

Derbyshire County Council and Derbyshire Economic Partnership commissioned the clips as part of the Invest in Derbyshire service, delivered in partnership with Marketing Derby.

The service promotes the county as a place to invest and provides support and advice to businesses looking to expand or locate in Derbyshire.

The support provided is bespoke, independent, free-of-charge and confidential.

In promoting Derbyshire, Marketing Derby is supported by local businesses whose own investment and growth stories make engaging case studies for others taking similar journeys and are exemplars as to why the county is a business location of choice.

The filmed ‘talking heads’ include a range of businesses across the county and from various sectors, including several firms in Chesterfield.

Among the businesses featured are Chesterfield Champions MTM Products, Roaring Mouse, Global Brands and Peak Village, which is owned by the Devonshire Group.

The films highlight why the businesses have decided to make Derbyshire their base.

They explain how they benefit from the central location and great connectivity, why the county’s quality of life offer is so important for staff wellbeing and recruitment plans, and how the heritage of innovation still lives on today.

Councillor Tony King, the county council’s cabinet member for clean growth and regeneration, said: “Derbyshire has so much to offer investors. Its unique position at the heart of the UK, together with excellent transport links and quality of life, make our county an attractive place for businesses to locate invest, live, work and stay.

“It’s great that existing Derbyshire businesses are able to share their story, which we hope will give more businesses the confidence to base themselves here.”

Central Technology announces new Managing Director and CEO

In order to support its continued growth plans and the development of its national branch network, Central Technology has announced a restructuring of the board team. Rob Longden is set to take over from Ian Snow as Managing Director, whilst Ian will move into a newly created CEO position.

Central Technology has achieved consistent year on year growth over the last 12 years and this change will enable that growth to further accelerate in line with current targets.

Rob has been with Central Technology for 6 years and has spent that time within the sales, operations and service delivery teams, most recently as Commercial Director. Rob has over 30 years of IT industry experience within both SME and corporate sectors developing, implementing and managing service delivery teams, ITIL frameworks and driving service excellence through process and operational controls.

Ian’s move to a full-time CEO role will see him focus on the strategic development of the business and ensuring the exceptionally high levels of customer service are maintained. This new role will draw on his past experience at Deloitte and as a Director at two high growth, market leading lift installation and maintenance businesses.

Ian commented: “Our goal was always to get CT into a position where Rob could take over as Managing Director and utilise his vast industry knowledge to help the business achieve its full potential. I am delighted we have reached the point where we can put this plan into action.”

Rob commented: “It is one of the proudest moments of my professional career to lead this tremendous company and the talented people within it, as well as being able to ensure successful outcomes for our valued customers.

“I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know and work alongside our team and customers for a number of years. Bridge Help makes senior promotion

Chesterfield’s commercial finance specialist, Bridge Help has promoted Katie Snodden to the newly created role of Head of Sales.

The promotion recognises the significant contribution Katie has made to the business since she joined as a Business Development Manager in 2021.

In 2022 alone Katie, who lives in Chesterfield, secured more than £8million worth of loans for brokers throughout England and Wales. In her newly created role, she will now lead Bridge Help’s team of Business Development Managers in growing the company’s loan book which it aims to double in 2023.

Chris Sellars, CEO and General Counsel of Bridge Help said: “Katie has built some amazing relationships across the industry, all whilst taking on additional responsibilities within the company. Her appointment is integral to our growth plans for next year and she is absolutely the right person for this role.”

Katie added: “I am thrilled to take on this exciting role. One of the many reasons I joined Bridge Help was the opportunity to grow my career and skillset within the business.”

Katie joined the bridging finance sector from the transport and logistics sector having previously worked within financial services for a large, chartered accountancy firm in London. Her appointment at Bridge Help signalled her return to the financial services sector, which she describes as her ‘first love’.

To further support the firm’s ambitious growth plans, at the end of last year, Bridge Help joined NACFB, the largest trade association for commercial finance brokers in the UK.

Regional law firm BRM Solicitors has appointed experienced Real Estate Director George Thomson and Paralegal Georgina Kassim to support its clients in Chesterfield and the surrounding area.

Newly appointed Director, George Thomson specialises in agricultural and commercial property and has previously worked with a range of clients from large public sector organisations to smaller owner-managed businesses.

Shannon joins Shorts after 4 years as a specialist R&D Tax Consultant at a major professional services consultancy firm. Prior to this, she achieved her bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Chester, followed by a master’s degree in Financial Management from Sheffield Hallam University.

On joining the firm as part of the Radius team, Shannon said: “It’s always nerve-racking starting a new job, but I’ve had such a warm welcome from everyone I have met so far. In the short time I’ve been here, everyone has truly made me feel part of the team.
