Chesterfield to be lit up for Christmas this weekend

Residents and visitors are invited to attend the Chesterfield Christmas Lights Switch On and Market on Sunday 19 November.

The event is being held in Chesterfield’s town centre, and crowds can enjoy a range of street entertainment from 12pm.

This is a fantastic free event for all the family to enjoy – whether you want to sing along to some Christmas carols, listen to a steel band, be entertained by the National Elf Service, or simply see the festive lights being turned on across the town, there is something for everyone.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “If you want to get into the festive spirit, what better way to do this than to attend our Christmas Lights Switch On event. Come along with your family and friends to enjoy all of the free street entertainment, as well as having the opportunity to do some shopping in the town centre and by visiting our festive market stalls.

“Shopping local is a fantastic way to support our local economy and there are some incredible independent traders across the town centre.”

This year’s special guest appearing in Rykneld Square is Paddington™. He will be appearing outside the Visitor Information Centre at intervals between 12pm and 3.30pm check the website for more information. Don’t forget to bring your phones or cameras to take photos of Paddington during your visit.

The stage show will be held in New Square from 3.30pm with carol singing Christmas Crackers, Directions Theatre Arts dance school and a stunning light show with juggling and hula-hoops.

Stars of the Aladdin Pantomime including Anne Hegerty, Nigel Clarke, Tony Rudd and more will also be taking to the stage to join the celebration and host a ticket giveaway. The lights will be officially switched on at 4.45pm.

A market will be held alongside the event and the Market Hall will be open – making it a fantastic opportunity to support local independent businesses and start preparing for Christmas. Chesterfield residents will be able to park for free with their free resident’s pass.

Traders invited to book their stalls for the Christmas Lights Switch On  

Makers, crafters, and independent retailers are being invited to book a stall on Chesterfield Market for the day of the festive lights switch on.

The Christmas Lights Switch On event is taking place on Sunday 20 November and traders are welcome to trade from 12pm to 6pm, setting up from 10am.

Regular stall holders, casual traders and local creatives are being invited to sign up now to reserve their place at one of the town’s most popular events. Stall allocation will be on a first come first served basis, with existing Licensed Traders being given allocation priority.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The Christmas Lights Switch On is always a fantastic event for all of the family to enjoy. As well as the lights being turned on in Chesterfield town centre, we have another great stage show planned too.

“We expect there to be a high footfall in Chesterfield with members of the public coming into town from both local communities and other areas in Derbyshire too. We are inviting our regular and casual traders, as well as those who have perhaps not traded on our market before to book a stall at this event.”

Stalls are priced at £35 each and can be reserved via the My Chesterfield online platform. A member of the visitor information team will then contact you to take your payment.

Market stalls comprise of either an 8-foot or twelve-foot stall, with 4 boards, enabling trading on either side.

Everything you need to know about the Christmas lights switch-on in Chesterfield this weekend

Chesterfield’s annual Christmas Lights Switch-On is taking place on Sunday 21 November and everyone is invited to come along.

Residents and visitors will be able to see a variety of entertainment throughout the day, as well as having the opportunity to enjoy a market to do some Christmas shopping.

The event begins at 12 noon and will run on into the early evening, with the switch on happening at 4.45pm.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The Christmas Lights event is one of the most popular events that we organise locally for residents and visitors to enjoy.

“This year there is lots going on throughout the day, as well as stage entertainment to get everyone in the festive spirt.

“There is something for the whole family to enjoy at the event so everyone is welcome to join us for what will be a great afternoon of entertainment.”

What can you see at the event?

  • Visit the Market Hall to see The Rose Choir from 2pm to 2.25pm
  • Watch performances on Central Pavement from the Sheffield Brass Band at 12.50pm to 1.10pm and 2.10pm to 2.30pm and see the Gospel Choir from 3pm to 3.20pm
  • Visit Burlington Street to see the Pantonic All Stars Steel Orchestra from 12pm to 12.30pm, 1.30pm to 2pm and 3.30pm to 4pm

There will also be a range of walkabout entertainment around Chesterfield’s market from 12pm including Band Baja, the Glow Jugglers, a Christmas Tree Stilt Walker, Dancing Robots, a Winged Angel and LED Drummers.

Visitors can also go along to the Parish Church of St. Mary and All Saints (Crooked Spire) to see the festival of Christmas trees from 12pm to 5.30pm. The church will be filled with Christmas trees decorated by local people, groups and shops.

Families will also be able to meet the Minions, Bob and Kevin at Rykneld Square at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.  No booking is needed, but please be mindful that there may be a short wait to see the characters if it is busy.

Stage entertainment

The stage entertainment will begin from 3pm hosted by Becky and Laura from Peak Radio.

The Rose Choir, Band Baja, the Glow Jugglers and The Gospel Choir will all be performing on the stage, as well as visitors being able to see some of this year’s pantomime cast from Beauty and the Beast that is on at the Pomegranate Theatre.

There will also be a chance to see Santa Claus.

The Christmas lights will be switched on at 4.45pm.

Markets

A festive market will take place on the day of the Christmas lights switch on. All available stalls have been snapped up for this event, providing visitors with the perfect chance to start their Christmas shopping and get their hands on some unique gifts. Vinyl lovers are in for a treat with the Chesterfield Record Fair taking place on the same day.

Makers, craftsmen, and independent retailers have been invited to book a stall on Chesterfield Market on other days in the build up to Christmas. Chesterfield Christmas Lights Switch On promises fun for the whole family

Residents and visitors can get into the festive spirit as Chesterfield’s annual Christmas Lights Switch On returns for 2021.

There will be a variety of entertainers performing throughout the day and a market that will allow shoppers to grab a Christmas bargain. The event takes place on Sunday 21 November from 12 noon to early evening, with the switch on happening at 4.45pm.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The Christmas Lights Switch On is one of our most popular events attracting thousands of people each year and for many families it is a Christmas tradition.

“We’ve got lots planned this year to keep the whole family entertained throughout the day. I am delighted that it could return this year, and I hope lots of people will come along and have a great day out whilst shopping local and supporting local businesses.”

The stage show will be held in New Square and there will be a variety of different performers including choirs, dancing robots and children’s characters.

A market will run alongside this event in the Market Square and the Market Hall will be open so shoppers can start picking up presents from local businesses.

The Christmas Lights Switch On is a key element of the Christmas in Chesterfield campaign which aims to encourage people to visit Chesterfield town centre and support local businesses this Christmas.

Other activities planned include the return of the Amazing Magical Santa House and Elf Trail which were very popular last year. A series of walkabout entertainers including stilt walkers, carol singers and tap-dancing turkeys. The Crooked Spire will also be hosting its Christmas Tree Festival and Beauty and the Beast pantomime will be at the Pomegranate Theatre.
