Summit celebrates collaborative approach to turbocharge Chesterfield’s business growth

Business leaders have outlined details on how Chesterfield’s collaborative approach towards regeneration is creating a perfect environment for business growth.

The Chesterfield Investment Summit took place on Wednesday 6 November 2024 at Casa Hotel, providing an extensive update on various projects that will dramatically increase jobs and prosperity across the borough’s communities.

Destination Chesterfield organised the event, which was supported by Markham Vale, We Are Spaces, and East Midlands Chamber. The summit showcased a range of transformative projects taking place across the Borough, many of which have been made possible thanks to collaborative partnerships created across the public and private sectors.

Delegates heard an update from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) on the East Midlands Investment Zone, which is set to bring hundreds of high-quality jobs in advanced manufacturing and green industries to the former Staveley Chemical Works site and former Hartington Colliery site.

Speaking at the summit, Cllr Nadine Peatfield, Deputy Mayor of the East Midlands, commented: “The East Midlands Investment Zone is a gamechanger for our region. Under the leadership of Mayor Claire Ward, EMCCA will help create 4,300 jobs and leverage £383m of private investment.

“Investing in the right places at the right times is going to be crucial to deliver the change needed to make this region the best place in the country to live, work and learn.”

Huw Bowen, Chief Executive Officer at Chesterfield Borough Council provided delegates with an extensive update on the town’s wide range of current and future regeneration projects.

These include the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield scheme, in which contractors are currently on-site carrying out transformations of the town’s famous marketplace and the historic Stephenson Memorial Hall Building.

A further £20m is also expected to be made available to the Chesterfield Town Board as part of the government’s long-term plan for towns, with details of further development in the town centre to be revealed in the future.

In addition, the summit was updated on the progress being made on development in Staveley. Chair of the Staveley Town Deal project, Ivan Fomin said: “Developments are now underway with a £6 million project to improve Staveley Marketplace, ensuring it is a great facility for people living, visiting and working in the area. On top of that, the £4.41 million Staveley Waterside building is being constructed at the canal basin, complementing the wider restoration of the Chesterfield Canal.”

Other speakers included Ojay McDonald, CEO of Association of Town and City Management, Amy Revell, Director at We Are Spaces, Scott Knowles, Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber, Peter Storey Head of Markham Employment Growth Zone at Derbyshire County Council and David Wells, Director of HBD. Collectively, they called on delegates to continue building on recent momentum, by continuing to work in partnership across sectors to maximise the town’s potential.

Cllr Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice-Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “Bringing forward investment is a collaborative approach and Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield have a successful track record of working with partners to achieve our economic plans.

Calls made for government funding to unlock regeneration in Staveley

Politicians and businesses are calling for government funding to help bring forward the Chesterfield Staveley Regeneration Route (CSRR), to ensure a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revitalise several former north Derbyshire mining communities is not missed.

The proposed 6km road would unlock the development of the former Staveley Works site for new housing, commercial units and community spaces, and also the former Staveley Chemical Works site for employment uses. Investment in the new road would also align with many of the projects currently being delivered through the £25.2 million Staveley Town Deal.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader, Councillor Tricia Gilby, was joined by local MPs Toby Perkins (Chesterfield) and Louise Jones (North East Derbyshire), plus officer representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council, and landowners Harworth Group and The Devonshire Group, on a recent site visit to discuss the enormous potential of the Staveley Growth Corridor in terms of new homes, new jobs, a new primary school and new leisure opportunities centred on the Chesterfield Canal.

Harworth Group and The Devonshire Group have both submitted planning applications to Chesterfield Borough Council to develop their respective parts of the former Staveley Works site, which if fulfilled could generate an additional £205 million of spend per annum into the local economy. In addition, The Devonshire Group is exploring how it can redevelop the adjacent former Staveley Chemical Works site for employment uses.

These proposals are dependent on the delivery of the Chesterfield Staveley Regeneration Route, which if constructed will also unlock other regeneration and development opportunities in the Staveley area, relieve road congestion and improve air quality.

The former Staveley Chemical Works site together with the former Hartington Colliery site are also earmarked for inclusion in the proposed East Midlands Investment Zone – where the priority will be to attract new green technology and advance manufacturing businesses and create new high-quality jobs for local people.

Funding for the road project is currently being considered by the Department for Transport.

Many of the region’s political leaders have signalled their support for the new route and the regeneration that would be unlocked by it, including East Midlands Combined County Authority Mayor Claire Ward, who visited the site in July.

Toby Perkins MP said: “The Chesterfield Staveley Regeneration Route is vitally important to the regeneration of Staveley and alongside improving traffic flows for everyone, it is likely to lead to thousands of new jobs and hundreds of new homes. It is important that money is found to complete the detailed land investigation work which is needed to provide certainty on the costs of the clean-up and construction. And after that we need confirmed approval that the funding for the road will be made available. I will be stressing the importance of this to the new Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, alongside our new Mayor Claire Ward and other local politicians and business leaders.”

Louise Jones MP said: “There is huge potential for the Regeneration Route to unlock the homes and jobs that our community needs. I’m determined that we grab this opportunity with both hands – I’ll be working with Toby Perkins, Claire Ward and our local councils to secure the funding we need to get the project up and running.”

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “We couldn’t be better placed to realise the enormous potential of the Staveley Growth Corridor. The public and private sector are fully aligned in terms of their shared commitment to delivering 1,300 new homes and separately building a commercial estate that will support the creation of 6,400 new jobs over a five to ten-year horizon.

“Our collective ability to do this is however reliant on government support for the Chesterfield Staveley Regeneration Route and trying to secure this is a priority action. It is therefore very encouraging to have the full support of our local MPs and East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward.

“We want Chesterfield to be a thriving borough and working together as partners we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver long-lasting change and future prosperity for communities that are still recovering from the decline of mining and other traditional industries.”

Councillor Carolyn Renwick, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, said: “The Chesterfield Staveley Regeneration Route is one of the most significant economic growth opportunities in the East Midlands. It has the capacity to deliver the government’s growth agenda by reclaiming brownfield land and facilitating forward jobs, homes and environmental benefits at scale, ensuring an old industrial site is brought back to life.

“With our partners, Chesterfield Borough Council, Harworth Estates and The Devonshire Group, we want to work with government to deliver this transformational investment that will bring widespread benefits to communities along the Staveley Corridor and join the dots with other strategic investments in Chesterfield and across Derbyshire’s northern growth zone.”

Jo Neville, Harworth Group’s regional head of planning, said: “The walkaround the site and the previous visits from the East Midlands Mayor earlier in the summer show real commitment from the region’s leaders to addressing local housing need and creating opportunities for communities.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to work with our partners in Chesterfield to deliver at Staveley Works and hope the government recognises the strategic case for investing in this part of the country as part of its national growth agenda.”

Andy Byrne, Group Property Development Director at The Devonshire Group, said: “We are committed to helping bring the successful regeneration of this once thriving industrial heartland to fruition, so it is reassuring to see and hear the continued support of local politicians. With plans submitted and the support from local stakeholders, we’re raring to get started, so all that’s left is commitment from the Department for Transport to help deliver the new route and unlock this once-in-a-generation opportunity.”

New Chesterfield artist in residence set to inspire with exciting public art projects

From printmaking to photography, local people are being invited to get involved in a new art project which will help bring Chesterfield town centre to life during the ongoing regeneration work.

Local artist, Lucie Maycock, has been appointed as the ‘artist in residence’ the first project for the new public art programme, Animate Chesterfield. It aims to encourage people to visit the town, engage in creative activity and experience new artworks that will help leave a lasting legacy.

A series of workshops – aimed at both children and adults – will be running in the project’s base in New Square, from September to December 2024. There will be a range of activities on offer including printmaking, storytelling, photography and much more.

Lucie is a Chesterfield-based socially engaged multi-disciplined freelance artist who specialises in community arts. Her career spans over 15 years working in a number of disciplines and creative mediums.

Initially she specialised in youth arts, working in a creative arts centre delivering visual arts, media, theatre projects and more. Lucie says she is immensely passionate about all of her community projects and strives to make the world a better place using the arts as her tool.

Lucie added: “There are many ways you can get involved with the artists residency programme in Chesterfield from September to December 2024. Dream and imagine a future for your town through creative arts, crafts, photography, printmaking and much more.

“It’s a chance to discover and tell hidden stories about Chesterfield and all its rich heritage and help to co-create and feed into ideas for creative artwork that will animate the town.”

Animate Chesterfield is led by Chesterfield Borough Council and delivered by Beam, a leading cultural development organisation working across the North of England. It will run for the next two years and as well as the artist in residence the programme includes the creation of new trails and other artworks.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Lucie into this role, and I know she has planned some fantastic workshops that will spark creativity and create memories for our residents. I look forward to seeing what is created and I’d encourage you to take a look at the upcoming events and take part in this great project.”

Funding for the public art project was secured through planning agreements as part of the council’s percent for art scheme, which was part of the previous Local Plan (and now continues on a voluntary basis), and the funding must be used for the delivery of public art.

Chair’s Blog: It has been a pleasure to update you on Chesterfield’s progress

This is my final blog as Destination Chesterfield Chair

For over a decade, I’ve loved writing about our town’s successes, wonderful people, and the challenges we’ve tackled together. However, it’s time to step down from my voluntary role as Chair of Destination Chesterfield.

In 2010, the UK began to recover from a global financial crisis, online shopping gained momentum, and Chesterfield FC still played on the hallowed turf of Saltergate! That year, my company sought planning permission for Chesterfield Waterside beside Chesterfield Railway Station, aiming to revitalise the old Trebor factory site, creating jobs and homes.

Today, the new office block, One Waterside Place, houses several thriving companies, and all spaces are occupied. Additionally, hundreds of families now call Waterside Quarter their home.

waterside place

New business spaces have emerged at the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre in the town centre and The Glass Yard opposite the SMH Group Stadium—both near full occupancy.

We’ve also become a town of experiences. New restaurants opened across town, including at the Batch House within The Glass Yard – Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly baked bread when walking in there? The award-winning, independent, four-star Casa Hotel also stands as a point of pride, serving local produce and providing excellent facilities.

Last year, we began revamping the iconic Stephenson Memorial Hall. I eagerly await the contemporary home for our Pomegranate Theatre and Chesterfield Museum, enabling our town to host bigger and better shows and exhibitions.

This summer, we began modernising our market to attract diverse traders and highlight our 19th Century Town Pump. We look forward to a more accessible town centre with a flexible market space for events, friends, and family.

Market Square Chesterfield – artist’s impression

Staveley is also set for transformation. New seating, lighting, paving for the town centre, and a new pavilion building will modernise the area to bring our communities together and support high streets.

It hasn’t all been sunshine and roses though… who could have predicted a global pandemic?! Despite challenges, our town’s ‘can-do’ attitude shines through. Positivity from businesses, the public sector, volunteers, and residents has helped us adapt to change.

Chesterfield boasts wonderful landmarks, history, and a great quality of life. But above all, I’ve learned that Chesterfield’s greatest asset is its people.

Thank you for sharing that passion far and wide. My final message: keep shouting about Chesterfield. We all want our town to become an even better place to visit, live, work, and invest. Let’s do this together as a community.

It has been a pleasure to update you on Chesterfield’s progress. I look forward to reading the views of our new voluntary board members at Destination Chesterfield in future articles. While I no longer lead as Chair, I will continue to play my part in securing our town’s positive future.

Pete.

Staveley Waterside Development gets underway

A transformation is about to begin at Staveley town’s canal basin as part of the Staveley Town Deal, a £25 million government-funded regeneration programme for the area.

A new, 2-storey building is to be constructed adjacent to Staveley Canal, creating an attractive mixed use facility that will support 11 business units for office, retail and workshop use alongside opportunities for food and drink. In short, creating a whole new destination in Staveley for both commerce and visitors.

The project is being managed and funded by a partnership between Derbyshire County Council and the Staveley Town Deal, which is overseen by Chesterfield Borough Council. The Town Deal is providing £3.5 million of the £4.5 million cost of the project with the balance being met by the County Council.

The canal basin will be greatly enhanced by the new development and, hopefully, will encourage more visitors to make recreational use of the canal for walking, cycling and boating. Access to the site will be improved with a new road and footpath and there will be indoor and outdoor dining space. Contractors started work on phase 1 of the project at the end of July. This initial phase is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2025.

This Staveley Waterside project forms part of the wider Markham Vale programme of works, a flagship 85-hectare business park based on the site of the old Markham Colliery.

The programme is a joint venture being delivered jointly with HBD focused on attracting and assisting businesses to support net zero ambitions and helping make Derbyshire a greener and lower carbon place to live, work and visit.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, Councillor Tony King, said: “It’s great to see this highly anticipated new development get underway at Staveley.

“Not only will it bring more life and jobs to the area, it will also draw more visitors to this attractive canal-side environment and encourage greater use of the infrastructure that’s already there.

“We have drawn on our many years of experience from work at Markham Vale and brought it to the Staveley Waterside project to help regenerate the area. It will provide both high-quality business accommodation and a visitor destination that people from near and far can enjoy.”

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “I am thrilled to see this prominent project right by the canal, start on site. This landmark development is a key part of the Town Deal programme as it will help create new jobs and encourage people to explore the historic canal, contributing to our overall goal of ensuring that Staveley is a place where everyone can start, stay, and grow.”

Staveley Waterside is one of 3 projects the county council is leading as part of the Staveley Town Deal which includes 10 projects in total.

Wheels to Work is a project we are leading to help people in Staveley access job and training opportunities by providing bicycles and e-scooters for those with limited transport options. And we are also working with partners on a project to reinstate a railway station in Barrow Hill and create better public transport connections between Staveley, Chesterfield and Sheffield for jobs and training opportunities.

New Chesterfield Town Board launched to drive almost £20m investment in the town

Plans to invest almost £20m in Chesterfield over the next decade have taken a major step forward, with the launch of a new independent board which will oversee how and where the funding is spent.

Local business leader Dominic Staniforth has been appointed to chair the new Chesterfield Town Board – sitting alongside representatives from other local businesses, community and voluntary organisations, and the public sector, including representation from Chesterfield Borough Council.

It follows the Government’s ‘Long-Term Plan for Towns’ announcement in October last year, which named Chesterfield as one of 55 UK towns to benefit from the new funding initiative – which aims to give local communities a greater voice in shaping improvements across the town.

Board members have now held their first formal meeting where it was agreed to run a public consultation exercise in June, giving local people the chance to have their say on how the money should be invested.

In line with Government guidance, a representative of Chesterfield Borough Council sits on the board, and the authority will also act as the board’s accountable body.  However, all decisions about how the £19.5m worth of endowment-style funding is invested will be made by the Chesterfield Town Board, in consultation with local people.

Dominic Staniforth is a Partner at BHP LLP Chartered Accountants – which has a base at One Waterside Place – and has been an active part of Chesterfield’s business community for many years. Speaking in his role as Chair of the Board, he said: “Chesterfield is already a great town full of wonderful people and organisations that share a common purpose to make it even better – a place to live, work, invest and study – and this funding will further bolster our ability to deliver on that collective ambition.

Dominic Staniforth BHP

“I am honoured to have been invited to become Chair of the new Chesterfield Town Board and it’s fantastic that leaders from across the town, and the council, have already begun work to identify how and where this funding could make the greatest impact for local residents and businesses.

“Listening to the views of local people and understanding where they think this investment could make the biggest difference is at the heart of this work and we will be sharing more information about how to get involved in the coming weeks.”

Working closely with the council, the Board will now oversee the development of a long-term vision statement and three-year investment plan – to be developed following consultation with local people, and based on what they see as priority areas for investment. This must be submitted to the Government for approval later this summer.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of the council, said: “We have really strong and innovative business and community networks here in Chesterfield and this is again another great opportunity to bring people together – backed by millions of pounds worth of funding – to deliver projects which will make a real difference to the quality of people’s lives over the next 10 years.

“We’re delighted to welcome Dominic to the role of Chair, as a local business leader with extensive experience of the area, and a shared passion and commitment to make the town of Chesterfield thrive for generations to come.”

In line with Government guidance, the funding must be spent across three key themes, which include:

  • Safety and security – to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.
  • High streets, heritage, and regeneration – making the place more attractive and accessible to residents, businesses, and visitors.
  • Transport and connectivity – improving access to the town centre, supporting greener modes of travel and enhancing public transport options.

More information about the Chesterfield Town Board and how people can get involved in shaping its future plans will be shared soon.

Hartington Business Park fully let as Capital Angling Limited agree on-site expansion

Devonshire Property Group, part of the portfolio of Devonshire Group businesses, is celebrating full occupancy at its Hartington Business Park scheme in Staveley this week.

Capital Angling Limited, an existing tenant at the site, has agreed to take on a further 2,465 sq ft to support its expanding e-commerce operations.

The business, which provides a wide range of fishing tackle and equipment, has agreed a five-year lease on a second unit at site, taking its footprint at Hartington Business Park up to 7,364 sq ft.

Adam Mayfield, Property Development Manager at Devonshire Property Group, said: “Reaching fully let status at Hartington Business Park is indicative of the high level of demand for industrial warehousing in Derbyshire. We are really pleased to be able to help support Capital Angling’s expansion on site and to provide them with a platform to continue to grow their business. The strong tenant confidence in us and the scheme is a testament to our continued investment in the area and our commitment to ensuring that the unit sizes & specifications suit a broad range of occupiers and exceed energy efficiency standards.”

Jamie Jackson, Director at Capital Angling Limited said: “Hartington Business Park has proved to be an ideal location to grow our business, particularly given its proximity to both our customer base as well as some of their favourite fishing spots. Our success, and the support we’ve had from Devonshire Property Group, has been key to us being able to expand into our second unit at the site.”

Located on the northern edge of Staveley, five miles to the North East of Chesterfield, the 22,614 sq ft Hartington Business Park benefits from easy access to the M1 via J30 and J29A, located just 3.5 miles and 2.5 miles away respectively.

Ranging in size from 2,479 sq. ft up to 4,899 sq. ft, Hartington Business Park’s units have been built to a shell specification that allows occupiers flexibility to utilise the space for maximum business benefits. Built with a steel portal frame and steel profile cladding, the units also have secure concrete yards, EV charging points, full fibre broadband, ample parking spaces and boast a BREEM ‘Very Good’ rating.

100% occupancy at Hartington Business Park follows recent news that Devonshire Property Group has also fully let its 102,515 sq ft warehouse at the nearby Markham Vale. Beginning operations at the site later this Spring will be digital and information management specialists, Restore Records Management, who have let the warehouse on a long-term lease.

Andrew Byrne, Property Development Director at Devonshire Property Group, added: “Across Derbyshire and the East Midlands there is an acute need for quality industrial units to help support the region’s businesses in discovering new opportunities for growth. Achieving full occupancy at both Hartington Business Park and Markham Vale clearly demonstrates this. Fully letting both sites was only achieved through our continuous investment across our industrial portfolio and by ensuring that our sites provide the flexibility, facilities and specifications that our occupants need to grow and succeed.”

Canal restoration gets underway in Staveley

The Chesterfield Canal Trust celebrated the start of its latest phase of restoration with a groundbreaking ceremony at Staveley.

Lee Rowley MP, Toby Perkins MP and Cllr Tricia Gilby, the Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, were joined by Tony Mitchell, a director of O’Brien Construction Ltd. and Peter Hardy, the Chair of the Chesterfield Canal Trust.

O’Brien’s are carrying out the first phase of an 18 month long project. They will do major groundworks to clear the route of the canal and landscape the surrounding area. Next, the abutments for the new Trans Pennine Trail bridge will be built and, in September, this 38 metre long structure will be lowered into place.

Later a length of canal will be reinstated along with a new lock and another accommodation bridge at the bottom of Bellhouse Lane. There will also be a pumping system and a new Bellhouse Basin will be built. The towpath will be upgraded to a multi-user trail, stretching all the way across the Doe Lea Valley to Renishaw.

Finally, the whole area will be planted with wildlife friendly vegetation and a seating area for people to enjoy the tranquillity of the newly restored canal will be installed. You will be able to follow the progress of the works as they happen by going to the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s website.

Peter Hardy, Toby Perkins MP, Cllr Tricia Gilby, Lee Rowley MP, Tony Mitchell canal restoration groundbreaking

This is one of ten projects funded through the Staveley Town Deal, a £25.2 million investment in Staveley through the Government’s Towns Fund. The total cost of the canal restoration is around £6 million, most of which will come from the Town Deal. The Trust currently has an appeal to raise £50,000 to go towards the cost of the gates for the new Keith Ayling Lock, named after a former Chair of the Trust. To learn more, go to the Chesterfield Canal Trust website.

Peter Hardy welcomed everyone and said this was the culmination of three years of preparatory work. Toby Perkins said: “The canal is a huge asset to Chesterfield and the Trust’s volunteers are involved in something that genuinely matters and makes a difference to very many people”. Cllr Gilby was pleased that another of the Staveley Town Deal projects was getting underway and said, “This wonderful asset will boost the tourist economy and people can use it to walk and cycle, possibly even to get to work”.

Lee Rowley also praised the volunteers and said: “It’s just amazing to see that this has got going, it’s taken a number of years to do but we’re now seeing another example of Levelling Up in action”. Tony Mitchell said that O’Brien’s were very happy to have the opportunity to do the works which will bring joy to thousands of people for many years to come.

Chesterfield Canal Trust supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 200 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Chesterfield has a key role to play in the region’s economic growth aspirations

I have spent the past few days at UKREiiF – the largest real estate and investment event in the UK, attracting over 12,000 delegates from the public and private sectors.

It has been a busy week of meetings and events, discussing the opportunities in Chesterfield and raising awareness of the Borough as a place to invest.

The success will be known in the coming months and years, as we develop relationships alongside the progression of £2 billion worth of regeneration projects.

Delegates at UKREiiF

One of the strands of the Chesterfield Place Story is creating connections. People think of this as being about our excellent transport links, supply chain, and location next to the Peak District National Park. It is much more than just that!

Throughout history, Chesterfield has built relationships to bring forward growth and investment. We have a clear growth strategy, and projects to deliver those ambitions and want to continue collaboration to achieve these ambitious plans.

Following the launch of the East Midlands Combined County Authority and the election of the first Mayor it was positive to hear a collective voice for the region at UKREiiF.  As Derbyshire’s largest town, Chesterfield is important to the region’s economic growth ambitions.

East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward showcased the region’s investment potential at two events.  These were organised by D2N2 LEP, The upper-tier local authorities, Marketing Derby, Marketing Nottingham & Nottinghamshire, and Destination Chesterfield.

Destination Chesterfield hosted a table at a VIP lunch with the Mayor. A group of Chesterfield Champions, from across the property sector, alongside Chesterfield Borough Council presented our key asks to the Mayor to support the delivery of the Borough’s Growth Strategy.   Discussions included bringing forward transport infrastructure, facilitating investment and developing skills and talent through our regeneration schemes.

Lunch Meeting at UKREiiF

The second event showcased the region to delegates interested in investing in the East Midlands.  The Panel discussed why the ‘Time is Now’ to consider the East Midlands and launched a new online investment portfolio for the region.

Forum at UKREiiF

Chesterfield Property and Construction Group also came together to discuss all things property over drinks and we launched our new Investment Map. You can view the map here.

Chesterfield was highlighted in the Midlands Engine Investment Portfolio. The updated website was launched at a drinks reception and includes transformational opportunities for our historic town centre, the Chesterfield Waterside scheme, and the forward-thinking master plan for Chesterfield station.

Stephenson Memorial Hall

Chesterfield has a strong heritage of being inventive and delivering innovative approaches. From the first disposable nappies and the drills that made the Channel Tunnel to being the proud home of railway innovator, George Stephenson!

Once again, In a noisy marketplace, Team Chesterfield and Team East Midlands have collaborated and articulated why our area and region is a wonderful place to invest, live and work.

Chesterfield Investment Summit returns this November. The event promises to provide exciting updates on Chesterfield’s regeneration opportunities and I hope to see you all there.

Bookings will open in the Summer and if you would like to find out more about partnering on the event please do contact us at info@chesterfield.co.uk

East Midlands set to shine at national economic development event

Regeneration across the East Midlands will be put under the spotlight at a major investment and infrastructure forum next month.

The UK’s premier economic development event, the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF) is taking place this year from 21-23 May in Leeds.

UKREiiF aims to connect people, places and businesses to drive sustainable and inclusive investment – regenerating towns, cities and driving development – which in turn have a positive impact on communities, economic growth and prosperity.

Representatives from D2N2 LEP will be attending UKREiiF and will lead an interactive panel discussion on 22 May – ‘Focus on the East Midlands: our Time is NOW’.

During the panel session, delegates will hear directly from the new East Midlands Mayor, who will be confirmed once elections have taken place on Thursday 2nd May. Senior leaders from D2N2 LEP, East Midlands Freeport and the East Midlands Development Company will also outline investment and development opportunities in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and explain how devolution is set to transform the East Midlands region.

With access to up to £4 billion funding to invest in skills, transport, homes and regeneration and decarbonisation, the East Midlands devolution deal represents a once in a generation opportunity for our new East Midlands Mayor to use their new powers and new funding to drive growth and prosperity across the region. Panellists will discuss major infrastructure investment propositions coming on stream in our region such as the East Midlands Investment Zone, the STEP Fusion programme and the East Midlands Hydrogen cluster.

Devolution Panellists sat at table on stage with full audience listening

Panel discussion on East Midlands Devolution at UKREiiF 2023

Panellists include:

  • The newly elected East Midlands Mayor*
  • Elizabeth Fagan CBE, Chair D2N2 LEP
  • Nora Senior CBE, Chair, East Midlands Freeport
  • Sir Chris Haworth, Chair, East Midlands Development Company

*The East Midlands Mayor will be elected on Thursday 2 May and will confirm attendance following the election

The panel will be chaired by independent broadcaster Geeta Pendse

D2N2 LEP Chair, Elizabeth Fagan CBE, said: “During the panel, I’m looking forward to discussing the wealth of investable propositions we have in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, such as the East Midlands Investment Zone, that will focus on advanced manufacturing and green industries. The Investment Zone will complement our region’s low carbon prowess in nuclear and hydrogen, in particular the STEP Fusion programme in North Nottinghamshire and our East Midlands Hydrogen Consortium, our unique inland hydrogen collaboration cluster. The East Midlands is on the cusp of a very exciting future and it’s vital that we seize the momentum that devolution brings to transform our region.”

East Midlands Freeport Chair, Nora Senior CBE, said: “We have been presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attract and drive investment, innovation, and green growth across the region with two landmark destinations offered by East Midlands Freeport and the new combined authority’s investment zones. This panel will be an excellent showcase for all that the East Midlands has to offer investors who are keen to harness the skills, expertise and manufacturing heritage we have on offer here in the heart of the country.”

The Chair of East Midlands Development Company , Sir Chris Haworth said: “This is a momentous year for the East Midlands. We are looking forward to working with the East Midlands Combined County Authority and Mayor. There are some hugely exciting opportunities in the region which is at the centre of an energy revolution with the emergence of STEP nuclear fusion. Later this year, the closure of Ratcliffe Power Station, which is the last coal fired power station in the UK, marks a significant moment in history and provides a key location for economic growth adjacent to East Midlands Parkway Station.”

Delegates representing Destination Chesterfield will be in attendance at the event, discussing the wide range of investment taking place across the town with fellow attendees.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield said: “UKREiiF is an excellent opportunity to showcase our region, which we know has huge potential for investment and growth.

“Chesterfield has seen a significant amount of major regeneration over the past decade, with several multi-million-pound projects still coming forward.

“We look forward to seeing how devolution in the East Midlands will bring further growth to our town and surrounding areas – improving jobs, skills, infrastructure and quality of life for our people.”

Join the interactive panel session at UKREiiF to discuss how Team East Midlands is working together to unlock our region’s £4bn investment opportunity and create a brighter future for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. The panel is free to attend for delegates attending UKREiiF.

New town square in Clay Cross to be named Baileys Square

The Clay Cross Town Board has officially revealed the name of the new town square, which is to be built as part of the town’s redevelopment.

Baileys Square is set to provide residents, businesses and visitors with a vibrant day and night-time economy.

The new name is based on an old map of Clay Cross, featuring ‘Bailey’s Square’ in the same location as the new development, brought by the Town Centre Regeneration project.

The square will feature an open space, well-suited for future activities and markets.

Baileys Square will be a place to meet with family and friends, hosting a unique selection of places to wine and dine, a place for families to take part in experiences and crafts; and enjoy vibrant events.

The Clay Cross Town Deal project will enhance Clay Cross’ evening economy with a wider food and leisure offer thanks to the flexible business units coming as part of Baileys Square.

Chair of the Clay Cross Town Board and Managing Director of Inspire Design and Development, Lee Barnes, says: “I am extremely eager to unveil Baileys Square to the public. It will be a place to host some amazing events, make some fantastic memories for those attending and will become a household name to residents and visitors of Clay Cross, as a substantial leisure space at the heart of Clay Cross.”
