Awards night celebrates Chesterfield & North East Derbyshire’s voluntary organisations

Chesterfield voluntary organisations have been celebrated in a special awards ceremony, highlighting the work taking place to support residents across our community.

As part of its continued work to recognise and reward the excellent work carried out by volunteers and voluntary and community groups across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire, The Volunteer Centre held its annual Voluntary Sector Awards on Wednesday 1st November at The Winding Wheel Theatre.

Now celebrating its 10th year, the Voluntary Sector Awards remain a big hit with organisations in the area.

CEO of The Volunteer Centre, David Radford said: “This has been a great year for the awards.  We have received more nominations than ever before and have more people attending than ever before – it’s great to see that people still get excited about the event.”

The evening showcased all that is great about the Voluntary and Community Sector. The Volunteer Centre itself has a long and proud tradition of working with organisations to enhance and improve the lives of communities and individuals in their area.  The Volunteer Centre is in a unique position to help organisations celebrate the work they do.

David Radford continued: “While most people are aware of the good work done by voluntary organisations and volunteers, they seldom get the recognition they deserve and we hope, over the last 10 years, we have gone some way towards changing that.

“We are really grateful to the sponsors of the evening because without them we would never get the show off the ground!”

Chesterfield Champions continue support for local communities and charities

Chesterfield businesses and organisations are continuing their work to bring the community together with a number of initiatives to support local people and charities.

Find out about the latest community efforts from our Chesterfield Champions in the roundup below:

Vicar Lane to host Eurovision party under the big screen

Movie Night Vicar Lane

On Saturday 13th May, Vicar Lane will be bringing the party from day to night as they welcome visitors for a glittering get together to celebrate Eurovision.

Throughout the day, families can enjoy the table tennis and giant games in St James’ Square. There will be fun to be had at Vicar Lane’s shimmer wall where visitors can pose for selfies with Eurovision themed props for the chance to win dinner for two at Pizza Pi and two drinks at Chandlers Bar.

From 5pm, the pre party will begin with a live DJ to change the tempo, whilst local bar Chandlers serve up signature cocktails from their pop-up bar which will be located in front of the big screen in St James’ Square. Visitors will then be invited to pull up a deckchair for a free viewing of the Eurovision final at 8pm.

Sarah Bowler, Tenant and Community Liaison Manager said: “This will be a really fun memorable event with flamboyant entertainers and lots of quintessential glitter – perfect for celebrating the Eurovision final. We’re really pleased to be partnering with Pizza Pi and Chandlers Bar to offer great food and drink deals to partygoers too.”

Hospice aims to break end of life taboos over coffee and cake

ashgate death cafe

Frank discussions about death over a cup of coffee and cake will be had when Ashgate Hospice hosts a unique Death Café this Sunday.

The North Derbyshire charity is inviting people to attend the free event at The Batch House food hall in Chesterfield on Sunday 14th May.

The Death Café, which takes place between 3pm and 5pm, aims to increase awareness of death and dying with a view to help people make the most of life.

From discussing what music people want played at their funeral to fearing the death of a loved one – the hospice’s no-judgement session is open to anyone.

The conversation, although led by a facilitator, will become a natural exploration of the group’s thoughts and feeling towards the end of life.

Shelagh Freeman, End of Life Facilitator at Ashgate Hospice, who has helped organise the event, said: “It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but perhaps a coffee and a slice of cake is just the ticket to get people to talk about a subject that is often avoided!

“Despite the events of the past three years people still find death and talking about it uncomfortable, but talking about death can only be a good thing.

“Not only does coming to terms with your mortality mean you’re more likely to live life to the full, but being open about it means we can support each other, our families and ourselves when the time may come.

“Our Death Cafe doesn’t have to be a morbid concept – it’s an opportunity to share a safe space, have open and honest conversations and make the most of our finite lives. We’re all going to die so we might as well eat cake and talk about it!”

Derbyshire Voluntary Action supports local community to spot the early signs of bowel cancer

Derbyshire Voluntary Action is continuing to raise awareness of bowel cancer signs, symptoms and the importance of screening with a focus on areas in Derbyshire where screening uptake is traditionally low.

These include areas within Chesterfield, Erewash and Bolsover.

The organisation is engaging with local businesses, organisations and individuals sharing the message that early detection saves lives

The ‘Be Cancer SAFE’ message is simple:

• Screening – Participate in screening when invited
• Awareness – Be aware of any changes in your body
• Fast – If you notice changes, act fast. Contact your GP
• Early – Early detection saves lives. Recognise the symptoms and act promptly

Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK and affects 1 in 15 men and 1 in 18 women. The disease is treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early. 9 in 10 people survive if diagnosed in the early stages.

The project employs a community approach to improving cancer survival, creating a network of Be Cancer SAFE champions who help to remove barriers and normalise conversations about cancer.

People can help to raise awareness by:

• Encouraging friends, family and colleagues to visit the GP if they notice unusual changes to their bodies
• Raising awareness of cancer symptoms and screening within your community
• Spread the #BeCancerSafe message

Kat Johnson, who is a project worker for the campaign says: “4 in 10 people cannot name a symptom of bowel cancer, we want to change that. We want as many people as possible to recognise signs and symptoms at the earliest opportunity and take the chance to be screened or contact their GP if they have any concerns”

Accountancy Recruitment Group to take on ’30K in a day’ challenge

Walkers in Holmebrook Valley Country Park

Chesterfield’s Accountancy Recruitment Group is taking on a huge charity challenge to support local charity, Fairplay. The ’30k in a day’ walk will take place in some stunning places, including hiking up and reaching the summit of 7 fells.

Lauren Stubbs, Business Consultant at the company commented: “We will be tackling The Old Man of Coniston, Grey Friar, Crinkle Crags, Great Knott, Pike of Blisco, Little Carrs and Wetherlam – we’ll reach 859m elevation at our highest point. There are around 25 of us altogether and we are hoping to raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity.

Fairplay supports children and young people with disabilities and additional needs, and their families, across North Derbyshire. They offer a wide range of services to meet the needs of families- providing  support to children and young people, aged 0-30, and to parents and siblings.

Speaking on how important it is to support local community groups and charities in Chesterfield, Lauren said: “There are some amazing causes and local charities which are bringing so much into the community. Often you won’t hear about these charities vs some of the larger ones but they are equally as important- and fundraising events like this are essential to give as much back to the charity as they do for the community.”

Chesterfield charity set to celebrate 30th anniversary

A Chesterfield charity which supports children with learning difficulties or disabilities and their families is set to celebrate 30 years of helping young people across the town.

Fairplay was set up in 1992 by a group of parents who wanted accessible activities for their disabled children. The group set up a club where their children could attend during school holidays.

The demand for the group was overwhelming and the group developed into an organisation with paid staff. The organisation has grown ever since, developing youth services as well as children’s and expanding into areas throughout North Derbyshire.

In 2009 Fairplay was successful in receiving funding to build its first centre in Chesterfield. The centre has been purpose built to ensure that all children and young people are able to access the facilities on offer. The centre was officially opened in July 2010 and features an activity hall, outdoor play area, sensory room, kitchen, and changing places toilet.

With the opening of the new centre Fairplay has been able to expand its services and now offers services to young people up to aged 30 as well as a new pre-school parent support group for parents with children under 5. Fairplay continues to grow and develop in response to the needs of local families and currently supports over 400 families across the area.

HR officer, Nikki Lowe commented: “We feel we have made an absolutely amazing achievement in reaching 30 years! The last couple of years have been tough due to the uncertainties faced because of the pandemic but we can say with pride that even through lockdown we have managed to remain open, meaning our much needed services have continued to run for those families in need.

“Fairplay would like to thank all of the individuals and business who, over the last 30 years, have fundraised for us. Every donation really does help make a difference, and allows us to continue with our much needed work and services for children & young people with additional needs or disabilities.

“We would also like to thank all our volunteers for their continued help and support, as we wouldn’t be able to run sessions without them.”

To mark the occasion, the charity will be taking on it’s biggest fundraising effort to date. CEO Heather Fawbert, and HR Officer Nikki Lowe will be taking on the challenge of walking ‘30k in a day’. The 18.5 mile sponsored walk will take place on Friday 19th August around the beautiful spot of Buttermere in the Lake District.

Although Heather and Nikki will be fortunate enough to take in some stunning scenery, this grueling walk will include hiking up and reaching the summit of 7 mountains! They will be tackling: Red Pike, White Pike, Pillar, Hay Stacks, Seat, High Crag and High Stile – they’ll reach a whopping 892metres (that’s 2,927 feet!) elevation at the highest point.

In addition, the team will be involving the young people who attend Fairplay by hosting a sponsored walk around Linacre at the end of June – with the aim of walking 30K in a day as a collective team. The charity is also campaigning to recruit 30 new volunteers and will be holding an information day on Wednesday 1st June. Anyone interested should contact Tom Boden.

Nikki added: “People can support us in many different ways, whether it is volunteering or by donating money. Any donation made for our 30th year fundraising events will be greatly appreciated and goes a long way in supporting our children & young people and continues our valued work in the community.

“If you are a business and would like to sponsor our walk we’d love to hear from you – or even better, we have limited availability to join us on our sponsored walk so why not get involved, put on your hiking boots and take in the views of Buttermere whilst raising money for our charity? All we ask for anyone wanting to join us is that you pledge to raise a minimum of £500 – accommodation is booked and travel to and from the venue can be sorted for you so it’s just a case of contacting us if you are interested.”

Ultra Refrigeration take on daring skydive for Chesterfield charity

Chesterfield-based refrigeration and air-conditioning company, Ultra Refrigeration recently took to the skies in order to raise funds for local children and young people’s disability charity Fairplay.

Ultra Refrigeration manager Steve Shipp is a qualified skydiver, with the company supporting Fairplay since 2018. Previously Steve raised £2,000 for them when he completed the Marathon Des Sables in the Sahara desert, widely regarded as one of the toughest foot races on earth.

Steve described how the rest if the Ultra Refrigeration team wanted to get involved with their most recent charity effort: “I’m a qualified skydiver and will talk about skydiving whenever given the opportunity. A number of our staff had approached me asking how much it would cost to do a tandem skydive.

“All the staff were given the option as their Christmas bonus 2019 to have a tandem skydive voucher or the cash equivalent. 12 staff opted for the voucher. The move to raise money for Fairplay was a simple and obvious next step.”

Steve also explained why he continues to support the charity: “Seeing first hand the fantastic work that Heather and her team at Fairplay do for these children and young adults is very humbling.”

The skydives were done at Skydive Hibaldstow  in North Lincolnshire. They were completed on 9th August, 29th September and 2nd October. The team managed to raise a total of £415 for taking the plunge. Team members described the skydive as “terrifying but exhilarating,” “insane” and “life changing.”

Fairplay will be using the money raised towards the expense of the trips they arrange for the children.

Steve says: “This is where they have the opportunity to experience a whole range of activities that we might simply take for granted. After the skydives were completed I visited the children and young adults at Fairplay. Some of them now want to experience skydiving too. Heather has left that mission with me!”

Ultra Refrigeration supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 180 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.
