Spectacular ‘Shine a Light’ displays to wow visitors at Hardwick Hall

The National Trust’s Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield will host two nights of stunning after-dark displays for the final instalment of Derbyshire’s Shine A Light spectacular on Friday 17th & Saturday 18th February 2023.

Tickets for the magical events are selling fast as visitors prepare to watch Hardwick’s remarkable history unfold in a breath-taking display of light and sound projected against the dramatic backdrop of Bess of Hardwick’s Elizabethan masterpiece.

The displays will combine cutting-edge projections, moving animations, special effects, and live music to tell the story of the jewel in Bess’s crown. Witness tapestries come to life, landscapes re-form, and buildings rise and fall.

Plus, with live entertainment throughout each evening, and food and drink vendors selling treats from pancakes to Indian street food, Shine A Light promises fun for the whole family.

The displays at Hardwick Hall are the final instalment in a four-part programme of Shine A Light events that began at Cromford Mills in October 2022. The events have since thrilled hundreds of visitors at Elvaston Castle and Barrow Hill Roundhouse.

The displays are unique to each venue and visitors who watch all four chapters – and successfully spot the ‘hidden animal’ at each – have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a hamper of local produce.

Delivered by internationally-renowned Derbyshire-born video projection artists Illuminos, Shine A Light is designed to celebrate Derbyshire’s rich history and cultural heritage, boost the visitor economy and extend the tourism season during the traditionally quieter autumn and winter months.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of Derbyshire County Council which commissioned Shine A Light, says: “Our second season of Shine A Light has been even bigger and better and the fourth and final instalment looks set to wow audiences once more.

“What better way to spend an evening than to see our local history and heritage brought to life with a modern-day twist. An event not to be missed!”

Jo Dilley, Managing Director of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, says: “Shine A Light has already delighted hundreds of people with magical displays that shine the spotlight on Derbyshire’s rich cultural heritage.

“Each venue is unique, with its own story to tell, and not only do these events bring local history to life, they also support the recovery of local visitor economy businesses and offer a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an evening of entertainment with live music, food and drink. Get your tickets whilst you can!”

Shine A Light takes place at Hardwick Hall on 17th & 18th February 2023. Entry is from 17:30, with large-scale projections every 20 minutes throughout each evening. Tickets are £9 for adults and £6 per child (aged 4-16 inclusive, free for 3 and under).

Chesterfield energy broker to support local businesses in cutting costs

A Chesterfield-based energy broker has launched a campaign advising other businesses in the area on how they can reduce their energy bills.

Choice Utility, based in the town’s Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre is hoping their advice and support will help local businesses to keep their costs down, and take away their fears caused by recent volatility in the market.

The firm wants to educate business owners on how the market works by going into their premises and showing them ways in which they can keep their bills down.

Examples of this could be working with companies to secure a better deal on their energy, or simply advising on ways to reduce their consumption by taking a look at the appliances used within their business.

Choice Utility believes the collaborative campaign will help other businesses realise the benefits of making small changes, which in-turn can have a huge impact on savings.

The company also plans to spread the message and provide expert advice on its social media channels, keeping businesses in the loop on everything they need to know on where the market sits.

You can keep up with the Choice Utility ‘A Fortnight In Energy’ on the company’s LinkedIn page:

Dan Molloy, Managing Director at Choice Utility commented: “The reason we’re wanting to focus on SMEs is because they’re busy. We get that business owners don’t want to spend their time talking to dozens of suppliers, it’s going to take you all day.

“The one thing in common that every business has is that they are using gas or electricity. We want to reassure businesses about their energy and have an open line of communication with them, and this awareness campaign will help us to display that.

“We understand there is a stigma with energy companies, with people thinking they’re all a ‘much of a muchness.’ My advice to businesses would be not to shy away from looking at their energy, as you could potentially be saving thousands of pounds by simply picking up the phone and speaking to a broker.

“As a company, we’re all really passionate about Chesterfield and want to see businesses in the town flourishing, so we want to play our part in helping them and supporting our local economy.”

Trees planted in Staveley in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Almost 50 trees have been planted at a site in Staveley, in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Local school children and tree wardens were joined by representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council to plant 48 oak trees on Darley Close at Staveley, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Initiative.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative which was launched to help mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Following the wishes of His Majesty The King, the initiative has now been extended to the end of March 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant trees throughout the planting season, in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

The newly planted trees will help to create a new woodland in the area – called the Queen’s Copse – that will serve as a local memorial to Queen Elizabeth II.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of the Council; Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Deputy Leader of the Council; and the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield were all on hand to help plant some of the first trees on the site.

People across the country – from individuals, groups, schools and communities to larger organisations and businesses – can also play their own part by coming together to plant trees – to serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty. More information on how to get involved can be found at www.chesterfield.gov.uk/explore-chesterfield/parks-and-green-spaces/queens-green-canopy

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Trees help enhance our green spaces, create habitats for wildlife and can tackle climate change by absorbing carbon emissions so I’m hoping that as many people from our local communities will join in with The Queen’s Green Canopy and plant trees across the borough.

“This initiative is not only a great way to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her extraordinary service, but it will also help increase biodiversity across our borough.”

Over time the site will be managed in a way that is sensitive to nature and biodiversity and compliments the surrounding housing and open space.

Housebuilder joins forces with Junction Arts and local school for birdbox art project in Brimington

Housebuilder Bovis Homes, part of Vistry Yorkshire, has teamed up with Junction Arts, a Chesterfield based arts charity, to create a variety of artistically designed birdboxes at its Brimington Heights development.

Junction Arts commissioned artists, Adrian Riley and Annabel McCourt are leading the project, which will see clusters of birdboxes placed around the development site to provide refuge for local birdlife, as well as acting as creative markers for connections with existing public footpaths and rights of way.

In November last year, Adrian and Annabel brought in a third artist, Iona Calvert to work closely with children from Brimington Junior School, involving them in the creative process of being public artists. Pupils from the school spent four days coming up with designs for the exteriors of the birdboxes. Etched on poles supporting the birdboxes will also be quotes from the schoolchildren about the things they value about ‘home’.

Following close advice from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, the birdboxes will come in a variety of different sizes, materials and colours to encourage diversity of bird species, and will be strategically located throughout the development to draw the eye across the various vistas of the area.

The initial plan is for 40 bird boxes to be placed throughout the Brimington Heights development, with the potential for more to come in later stages. Additional artwork created by Adrian and Annabel will also be showcased throughout the site at various locations.

Adrian Riley, said, “We loved working with the children at Brimington Junior School. Over four days they played with pattern, colour and words, made up birdsong, invented new names for colours and sounds and explored what home meant to them, which resulted in some great ideas.

“Their enthusiasm, creativity and humour will help bring the birdbox artworks to life and create something that’s both visually engaging and of benefit to local wildlife. We also hope the boxes will encourage local people to walk the re-opened public footpaths to view the work. They’re intended to bring joy to everyone who encounters them.”

Louise Graham, sales manager at Brimington Heights said: “Bovis Homes strives to work with local communities to gain their valuable input in shaping and enhancing each of our developments. These community partnerships are incredibly important to us and demonstrate our company culture, underpinned by our values, of ‘building better together’.

“It’s been wonderful working with the Brimington schoolchildren and using their creative enthusiasm to help bring the birdbox project to life. The values the children placed on the meaning of ‘home’, and what ‘home’ means to them were particularly insightful and are just the values that we plan to instill within the Brimington Heights development for our buyers as they make their new property a home, and the new development, a neighbourhood.”

“Brimington Heights is in such a beautiful location, this is the perfect project to both cater for local wildlife and enhance the natural spaces within the development for our residents.”

The Brimington Heights development includes a number of other ecological enhancements, such as a native hedgerow that has been planted along the northern boundary of the site, providing a landscaping buffer as well as a feeding corridor for wildlife.

Brimington Heights comprises 150 three, four and five-bedroom homes, and provides options for those stepping onto the property ladder for the very first time, growing young families needing a bit more space, as well as those looking for a place to downsize after children have flown the nest.

Junction Arts supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 200 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

The business opened in the town back in November 2019, just months before the lockdown. Head of Recruitment, Helen Bradshaw takes up the story on how the business had to quickly adapt to changes brought on by the pandemic:

“We successfully navigated our business through this difficult period by adapting our courses to facilitate online learning but like most businesses we were unable to execute all our plans due to the restrictions in place.

“With lockdown firmly behind us we feel now is a great time to host an open event to showcase who we are, what courses we offer and reach out to those in the community who may still not of heard of us.”

Helen and her colleagues are hopeful that the relaunch event will help to engage the local community and provide people with an insignt into the key learning opportunities they are able to offer.

She commented: “We have an evening of positivity and fun planned, with music and light refreshments, mini treatments such as hand and arm massage or shoulder massage to enjoy, make-up demonstrations and a tour of our college with staff on hand to answer any questions about the importance of our role in the learning and development of others and contribution to our town.  In addition, and our way of saying thank you all attendees will receive a voucher which can be redeemed against a treatment at another time.”

White Rose Beauty Colleges is confident that the business will continue to grow  in Chesterfield  and is dedicated to its commitment and contribution towards the Chesterfield community.

“Our college plays an active role in supporting Derbyshire schools by attending their careers events, also we host open days and taster sessions in our college throughout the year. Our excellent two-year Study Programme for school leavers helps prepare the learner for work in the industry by providing a realistic salon environment where members of the public can book treatments.

“We are passionate to introduce the concept of how diverse a career in beauty can be, with excellent links to organisations who we regularly invite as guest speakers to our college.  We have forged good links with local salons and are happy to advertise job opportunities around our college.  We provide the opportunity for NEETS learners who often come to us with challenges and obstacles which we help and support them to overcome.  We literally encourage every learner to believe in themselves and achieve their goals.”

“Our adult learners can choose from a varied and interesting course programme, we find our learners are either looking for a career change or have a job they enjoy but want to learn something creative.  We have strong links with the Job Centre and have attended career events, our Level 2 Diploma courses are fully funded including kit and uniform to anyone who is unemployed to ensure those in need are not denied the chance to join us.

“Most recently we have offered and facilitated courses for a local group of Ukrainian refugees who wished to upskill whilst they are in the UK or simply enjoy the sociability of meeting new friends. We will continue to reach out and support local charities and businesses alike, my belief is we can and do make a difference.”
