United Cast Bar achieves King’s Award for Enterprise

Chesterfield’s United Cast Bar (UK) has been honoured with a King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.

The company, which is Europe’s largest manufacturer of continuously cast iron bar, is one of 252 organisations nationally to be recognised with a King’s Award for Enterprise.

Considered the most prestigious awards for UK businesses, receiving a King’s Award for Enterprise is a globally acknowledged royal seal of approval for UK companies.

United Cast Bar’s King’s Award recognises the company’s outstanding achievement in international trade. Established in 1998, United Cast Bar (UK) has risen to become a market leader in the production of continuously cast flake and nodular graphite iron.

More than 90% of the cast iron bar produced at the company’s foundry and worldwide headquarters in Chesterfield, is exported to Europe and further afield, including North America, South Africa, and multiple locations in the far east.

Delighted to be recognised, James Brand, Managing Director of United Cast Bar Foundries, said: “The team and I are over the moon. It is recognition for our continued product development and commitment to producing a high quality product that has enabled us to open new markets around the world and trade competitively internationally.”

Part of the United Cast Bar Group of companies. United Cast Bar (UK) is considered as a pioneer in the production of continuously cast iron bar. Since 2014 it has held the World Record for producing the largest continuously cast bar of iron.

Most recently the company has invested more than £5 million in new equipment at its Chesterfield site where it employs 100 people.

“Having a King’s Award for Enterprise gives us a further platform to develop and grow the business internationally. There are exciting times ahead for United Cast Bar,” added James.

Lucinda White, owner of Chesterfield-based Pure Awards who wrote and submitted United Cast Bar’s application to the King’s Award for Enterprise process last year, said: “It was a pleasure to work with James and the team at United Cast Bar preparing this very prestigious award entry. Whilst there is never a guarantee of success, we were confident the company had a strong story to share and that their achievements in the recent years expanding their international trade operations were worthy of this award.

“We are thrilled with the result, which is another achievement of our own in helping more Derbyshire businesses gain recognition as first time entrants. It’s a great effort and brilliant result for everyone involved.”

The King’s Awards for Enterprise are awarded to businesses for outstanding achievement in four categories: International Trade, Innovation, Sustainable Development, and Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility). Entries to the annual awards

The King’s Awards for Enterprise, previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, were renamed last year to reflect His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s by recognising outstanding UK businesses. The Award programme, now in its 58th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to use the esteemed King’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.

Applications for King’s Awards for Enterprise 2025 open on His Majesty The King’s Coronation, 6th May 2024. For more information, visit https://www.gov.uk/kings-awards-for-enterprise.

X17 bus service to begin taking visitors to Matlock Farm Park

The well-known X17 bus route which serves Chesterfield, Sheffield, Barnsley and Matlock will soon be adding Matlock Farm Park to its list of destinations.

The addition of Matlock Farm Park to the route will begin on 12th May, giving people the chance to visit the park all year round. The X17 will stop at the park twice a day for both outward journeys (stopping mid-morning and lunchtime), and return journeys (lunchtime and late afternoon).

Matlock Farm Park offers farmyard fun for all ages, all year round, in the fresh air and tranquility of the countryside. Families can meet, feed and cuddle a number of different animals, and there is plenty to keep the little ones busy, including an indoor play barn and outdoor play areas.

The park also is home to the UK’s largest Jumping Pillow, go-karts, a shop and cafe. Visitors can meet sheep, goats, pigs and donkeys to more exotic animals, such as wallabies, rhea birds, emus and meerkats.

Lotty Hawkins, Communications Manager at Matlock Farm Park said: “We are so delighted to be included on the well known X17 bus route. We’ve tried a few times over the years to get interest for a bus service and it is Stagecoach who’ve come up trumps, really listening to our needs.

“Many visitors just don’t have access to a car and there have been occasions when we’ve actually gone out with a car to rescue a stressed lone parent with a toddler in a pram, as they’ve been trying to walk from a bus stop over a mile away down roads without a footpath and fast moving traffic.

“Not only this, but there is definitely increasing interest in using public transport to be more green and to enjoy a relaxing bus journey through the surrounding beautiful countryside.”

“We really hope visitors will make great use of the service – they’ll benefit too by receiving 10% off individual adult, child and concession farm park day tickets, including mid-week term time offers, when purchasing them on the door and presenting their bus ticket for that day’s travel.”

Chesterfield office development, The Quad is now fully let

DHU Healthcare CIC and a 5A1 covenant strength company have become the latest anchor tenants to snap up newly refurbished office space in Chesterfield as FI Real Estate Management’s (FIREM) office development, The Quad, is fully let.

Taking a combined 56,000 sq ft, the two organisations join a raft of businesses choosing Chesterfield as their home following extensive refurbishment by FIREM to create high quality, flexible and energy efficient office space that have been designed with wellbeing in mind.

Work to refurbish the Quad has included brand new mechanical and electrical technology with a high quality Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) air conditioning system, new air handling units to circulate clean air and electric vehicle charging stations.

Neighbouring the Quad, FIREM has also completed a £2.5m refurbishment programme at the HQ, one of Chesterfield’s most prominent office developments where there is now only 5,000 sq ft of office space available.

FIREM’s investment at the HQ has created over 100,000 sq ft of modern open-plan office space, expertly designed to reflect new ways of working and how businesses utilise office space with private offices, meeting rooms and coworking space.

Pioneering a new approach in the Chesterfield business community, FIREM also offers bespoke and turnkey packages tailored to meet specific business needs and requirements. Each workspace at the HQ can be configured to suit individual needs with the option to adjust as businesses grow.

FIREM’s refurbishment programme brings Chesterfield’s office accommodation in line with developments found across neighbouring cities such as Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby.

Both the Quad and the HQ are located in the heart of Chesterfield town centre overlooking Queen’s Park and are surrounded by a variety of local amenities for the convenience of visitors and tenants.

Adjacent to The HQ sits The Quad, where FIREM has experienced rapid leasing success, welcoming two tenants to the building prior to completion.

Dom Knowles, Head of Offices FI Real Estate Management, commented: “The way businesses use office space is fundamentally different to just a few years ago. As developers, it’s our responsibility to provide workspaces that respond not only to the needs of the current market but to set the trends for future ways of working.

“Our space at The HQ and The Quad is flexible and customisable, allowing our tenants to maximise their workspace without compromising on convenience. Elevating spaces with the highest standard of amenities creates spaces where people love to come to work and will ultimately thrive, which benefits the business. We’ve had a large volume of interest in this development throughout the refurbishment and I expect we will be fully let in the coming months.”

Interested parties can contact Dom Knowles: dknowles@fi-rem.com for more information.

Markham Vale expansion aims to create 100 new jobs

Property developer HBD, part of Henry Boot, is bringing forward a new 31,264 sq ft commercial scheme at Markham Vale which could create more than 100 new jobs.

Reserved matters planning has been submitted for Markham Vale Trade Park; a brand-new development designed for trade counter businesses and SMEs. A 4,000 sq ft pre-let is already under offer to a national operator in a deal that could create around 16 full-time jobs.

Markham Vale is a flagship 200-acre industrial and logistics scheme delivered in joint venture between HBD and Derbyshire County Council. An award-winning development, it remains one of the region’s best-located industrial and logistics schemes, sitting at the heart of the UK motorway network and providing direct access to the M1 via a dedicated junction, J29a.

Vivienne Clements, Executive Director at HBD, said: “The Trade Park will be the newest addition to Markham Vale aiming to accommodate trade occupiers and smaller business who want to benefit from the scheme’s prominence and accessibility to the surrounding demographic. The Trade Park will provide much-needed Grade A space, allowing smaller trade businesses to operate from energy-efficient buildings in a prime business location.

“The job creation element is also significant, with the potential to provide 100 full-time jobs. Almost 20 years after development began, Markham Vale remains one of HBD’s most successful projects and we’ve no doubt this latest addition will see strong interest from potential occupiers looking for well-located, high-quality space in an area with a strong local labour market.”

Councillor Tony King, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, said: “This is a fantastic addition to Markham Vale bringing more jobs to the area and opportunities for small businesses, as well as providing a supplies hub to trades operating in the area.
“We’re proud of the positive impact Markham Vale continues to have on the local economy and this announcement sends yet another strong signal to other investors that Derbyshire is a place that helps businesses to survive and thrive.

Occupiers will benefit from Gridserve’s new Electric Forecourt being developed on the adjacent plot. Markham Vale Trade Park is expected to start on site late this year.

The letting agents on Markham Vale Trade Park are JLL and M1 Agency.

Harry Fullerton, Associate Director at JLL, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for trade occupiers and small businesses to capitalise on the prominence of Markham Vale as well as the growing number of homes and population surrounding the scheme. The energy-efficient specification and long track record of delivery by HBD at Markham Vale will undoubtedly make this latest development an attractive proposition for occupiers in a market of low supply.”

Markham Vale offers an appealing location for occupiers given its population of 270,000 (expected to increase further with more than 4,000 new homes being built within the area) and 119,000 passing vehicles each day on the M1. Its location close to amenities including McDonalds, Starbucks, KFC, ASDA and Burger King, plus the new Gridserve EV charging forecourt, will also benefit occupiers.”

Situated in the centre of England with excellent transport networks, Chesterfield is an ideal location to base your business. Find out more at: https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/business/invest-in-chesterfield/

East Midlands set to shine at national economic development event

Regeneration across the East Midlands will be put under the spotlight at a major investment and infrastructure forum next month.

The UK’s premier economic development event, the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF) is taking place this year from 21-23 May in Leeds.

UKREiiF aims to connect people, places and businesses to drive sustainable and inclusive investment – regenerating towns, cities and driving development – which in turn have a positive impact on communities, economic growth and prosperity.

Representatives from D2N2 LEP will be attending UKREiiF and will lead an interactive panel discussion on 22 May – ‘Focus on the East Midlands: our Time is NOW’.

During the panel session, delegates will hear directly from the new East Midlands Mayor, who will be confirmed once elections have taken place on Thursday 2nd May. Senior leaders from D2N2 LEP, East Midlands Freeport and the East Midlands Development Company will also outline investment and development opportunities in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and explain how devolution is set to transform the East Midlands region.

With access to up to £4 billion funding to invest in skills, transport, homes and regeneration and decarbonisation, the East Midlands devolution deal represents a once in a generation opportunity for our new East Midlands Mayor to use their new powers and new funding to drive growth and prosperity across the region. Panellists will discuss major infrastructure investment propositions coming on stream in our region such as the East Midlands Investment Zone, the STEP Fusion programme and the East Midlands Hydrogen cluster.

Devolution Panellists sat at table on stage with full audience listening

Panel discussion on East Midlands Devolution at UKREiiF 2023

Panellists include:

  • The newly elected East Midlands Mayor*
  • Elizabeth Fagan CBE, Chair D2N2 LEP
  • Nora Senior CBE, Chair, East Midlands Freeport
  • Sir Chris Haworth, Chair, East Midlands Development Company

*The East Midlands Mayor will be elected on Thursday 2 May and will confirm attendance following the election

The panel will be chaired by independent broadcaster Geeta Pendse

D2N2 LEP Chair, Elizabeth Fagan CBE, said: “During the panel, I’m looking forward to discussing the wealth of investable propositions we have in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, such as the East Midlands Investment Zone, that will focus on advanced manufacturing and green industries. The Investment Zone will complement our region’s low carbon prowess in nuclear and hydrogen, in particular the STEP Fusion programme in North Nottinghamshire and our East Midlands Hydrogen Consortium, our unique inland hydrogen collaboration cluster. The East Midlands is on the cusp of a very exciting future and it’s vital that we seize the momentum that devolution brings to transform our region.”

East Midlands Freeport Chair, Nora Senior CBE, said: “We have been presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attract and drive investment, innovation, and green growth across the region with two landmark destinations offered by East Midlands Freeport and the new combined authority’s investment zones. This panel will be an excellent showcase for all that the East Midlands has to offer investors who are keen to harness the skills, expertise and manufacturing heritage we have on offer here in the heart of the country.”

The Chair of East Midlands Development Company , Sir Chris Haworth said: “This is a momentous year for the East Midlands. We are looking forward to working with the East Midlands Combined County Authority and Mayor. There are some hugely exciting opportunities in the region which is at the centre of an energy revolution with the emergence of STEP nuclear fusion. Later this year, the closure of Ratcliffe Power Station, which is the last coal fired power station in the UK, marks a significant moment in history and provides a key location for economic growth adjacent to East Midlands Parkway Station.”

Delegates representing Destination Chesterfield will be in attendance at the event, discussing the wide range of investment taking place across the town with fellow attendees.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield said: “UKREiiF is an excellent opportunity to showcase our region, which we know has huge potential for investment and growth.

“Chesterfield has seen a significant amount of major regeneration over the past decade, with several multi-million-pound projects still coming forward.

“We look forward to seeing how devolution in the East Midlands will bring further growth to our town and surrounding areas – improving jobs, skills, infrastructure and quality of life for our people.”

Join the interactive panel session at UKREiiF to discuss how Team East Midlands is working together to unlock our region’s £4bn investment opportunity and create a brighter future for Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. The panel is free to attend for delegates attending UKREiiF.
