North Derbyshire’s Peak Village doubles site turnover in just three years

The organisation which runs the Peak Village retail park in Rowsley, near Chesterfield has reported major success at the centre in recent years.

In the past twelve months alone, Peak Village has welcomed 535,000 visitors through its gates and has now appointed new letting agents to capitalise on the centre’s recent growth.

Devonshire Property Group, part of the portfolio of Devonshire Group businesses, has appointed FHP Property Consultants to support with new lettings and lease renewal negotiations.

The new appointment follows strong 2023-24 performance at Peak Village with continued investment and proactive asset management from Devonshire Property Group delivering £8m in turnover for the financial year, up over £4m in the space of three years.

Amidst difficult trading conditions in the post-pandemic period, diversifying the centre’s offering, as well as delivering a mix of independent and high street brands, has also had a noted impact on footfall at the site, with over half a million people coming to sample what Peak Village has to offer.

In the last eight months alone, Peak Village has welcomed three new retailers to the centre, with Ashbourne-based premium lifestyle and country clothing and footwear retailer Henmores, local independent business Baxter & Co and artists and makers collective, The Derbyshire Makers all opening stores.

FHP will work with Devonshire Property Group to support the centre as it aims to continue evolving its retail and leisure mix to drive further footfall and attract local independent, luxury and national brands.

FHP has the largest dedicated retail and leisure team of any agents in the Midlands, and has claimed the EG award for “Most Active Retail Agent in the East Midlands” for 12 successive years and was ranked 5th nationally in 2023 for retail and leisure space transacted.

Katayune Jacquin, centre manager at Peak Village, added: “Devonshire Property Group is committed to bringing the most desirable, exciting and in-demand retailers to Peak Village. Working with FHP is a crucial part of our strategy for making the centre the go-to destination for both those from the region and the many tourists who visit Derbyshire every year. The past few years have been incredibly difficult for the retail industry, and I think it’s a testament to our resilience and approach to investment that Peak Village has not only been able to weather those storms but thrive.”

Tom Wragg, Associate Director at FHP said: “We are excited to be working with Devonshire Property Group in supporting the evolution of Peak Village and bringing premium retailer and leisure operators into the scheme alongside exciting independent and regional businesses. At FHP we pride ourselves in being a national agent with a regional presence which puts us in a prime position to attract the right mix of operators for Peak Village. We are already seeing strong levels of interest from high quality national retailers and look forward to building on that momentum.”

The Devonshire Group purchased Peak Village in 2021, with the aim of revitalising the centre by drawing on local expertise to enhance the site’s role in the economic and employment landscape of the Derbyshire Dales, as well as supporting the local community.

Significant investment since then – including ongoing work to transform the site’s central courtyard and Massarella conservatory to provide a modernised and more welcoming areas for customers – has enabled the site to continue improving and growing.

Earth Day 2024: Chesterfield businesses strive towards sustainability goals

Chesterfield businesses are highlighting how they are becoming more sustainable and playing their part in reducing carbon emissions, waste, and pollution.

Earth Day 2024 provides the perfect opportunity to showcase our businesses that are taking responsibility and looking after our corner of the world. Many companies across Chesterfield are implementing eco-friendly practices and innovative solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and minimise impact to the environment.

Several recent developments have indicated the town’s commitment to sustainability, including the recent office spaces at One Waterside Place and the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre. The former achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating, while the latter was rated Excellent.

Last month, Chesterfield Borough Council approved a new annual delivery plan that aims to ensure the council is a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 and that the borough is carbon-neutral by 2050. Investing in even more green vehicles, continuing to make council homes more energy efficient and making further progress towards decarbonising key council buildings – including leisure centres and the Town Hall – are among the actions set out in the council’s climate change plan for the coming year.

What’s more, future schemes such as the PEAK Gateway Resort will also be developed with sustainability in mind. PEAK’s masterplan includes a zero carbon carless mobility system offering day passes to visit the national park, and will generate its own energy on-site.

The town’s Property and Construction Group also regularly holds focused discussions on the subject of sustainability, enabling sector leaders to share knowledge and best practice.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield commented: “As consumers increasingly prioritise sustainability, Chesterfield businesses are not only meeting regulatory requirements but also seizing competitive advantages by aligning with environmental values. Earth Day serves as a catalyst for businesses to accelerate their efforts in building a more sustainable and resilient future.”

We spoke to several figures from our town’s network of Chesterfield Champions to find out how businesses in the area are playing their part.

Claire Wilks, FWD Motion

Claire Wilks 873 FWD Motion

At the heart of our business lies an unwavering commitment to sustainability across all our business operations- and we are increasingly finding this principle mirrored in clients’ priorities and decision-making too. We think about how our products sourced, produced delivered and even end-of-life recycling- the whole lifecycle is considered with eco-consciousness in mind.  Embracing local suppliers and UK-made products, and we are also now using more environmentally friendly UV link (rather than solvent inks)- and we are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint still further.  We have taken proactive steps transitioning our entire vehicle fleet to electric, with charging points at our headquarters. And our initiatives include a bee-friendly garden and encouraging a cycle commute with onsite showers. Solar panels power our HQs with plans for further expansion. This approach underscores our mission to promoting environmentally sustainability in all aspects of our mission.

Sophie Pashley, Peak Pharmacy

Sophie Central Assembly Manager

We currently assemble about 1.5million patient prescription items each month. This means thousands of paper bags. With our new system, bags are made from compostable potato starch immediately decreasing paper use. Our workplace travel plan encourages car sharing, and use of electric vehicles, for delivery vehicles and staff cars. The movement sensor lighting in our building turns lights off when parts of the building are unoccupied. Where possible, waste generated on site is recycled and we continually look for ways to improve this further.

Gareth Paradise, Global Brands

Gareth Paradise Shot

We’ve got a team of staff who are dedicated to continually improving our sustainability. We’ve recently invested in solar panels to take the bulk of our power demands. We constantly monitor power use and look to install devices and practices to reduce consumption. Our cardboard and plastic are all recycled from our warehouse, which amounts to quite a lot each year! Last year we completed our first carbon footprint assessment, setting clear targets to become carbon net zero by 2050.

Bridget Ball, Chesterfield FC

Chesterfield FC Bridget Ball

Steps have been taken to reduce the use of electricity around the stadium, where possible. Chesterfield FC Community Trust deliver sessions in schools, outlining the importance of protecting the environment and advising how youngsters and their families can do their bit to become eco-friendly.

Kelly Parks, Banner Jones Solicitors

Kelly Parks

Legal Firms are historically very paper-heavy but in recent years we have made a real effort to reduce our paper trail, opting for online files and court bundles. This drive has been seen across the whole business and is probably the most significant change in our environmental footprint. We also conduct far more client meetings on the phone and online which saves them a trip to our offices, which means less traffic pollution.

Richard Fowler, RA Information Systems

Richard Fowler exhibiting for RA Information Systems

One of our key priorities is environmentally conscious outsourcing to diminish our carbon footprint. We’ve partnered with ASK4 Data Centre, a facility powered entirely by renewable energy derived from wind, hydro, and solar sources. This strategic collaboration not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also provides our clients with tangible evidence of our dedication to eco-friendly practices. In addition to this, we actively participate in recycling electronic waste.

Jon Harris, Minuteman Press Chesterfield

Jon Harris - Minuteman Press

All the papers we use are FSC accredited, meaning they come from sustainable managed forests. All our waste paper and toner cartridges are either recyclable or sent back to be re-used. In our line of business, we believe it is important to educate customers on the process behind the print and try to ensure we are using processes which cause the least damage to our environment and reduce the amount of waste.

Mike Jones, Windowcharm Blinds and Curtains

Mike Jones-Windowcharm

Sustainability remains a focal point for me. I constantly seek ways to improve by sourcing materials locally whenever feasible, prioritizing UK-based suppliers who manufacture components domestically rather than overseas. Embracing a local workforce and encouraging car-sharing among staff contribute to our sustainability efforts. We responsibly recycle/reuse waste materials and emphasize overhauls and refurbishments over replacements whenever possible.

Rob Carlin, Superior Wellness

rob carlin superior wellness

With innovation being one of our brand values, every time we innovate we think about the environment.  We have installed solar panels on the roof of the warehouse, have electric forklifts and sourcing sustainable materials for our production facility.  We also have a couple of charging points for vehicles and over the next few years this number will increase.

Peter Botham, Shed Grounds Maintenance

Peter - Shed grounds 873

Sustainability is at the heart of our approach at Shed, and we are proud to have achieved ISO 14001 certification, a testament to our environmental responsibility. We’ve been proudly paper-free since 2019, reducing unnecessary waste and resource consumption. We’re also making strides in our vehicle fleet by adopting electric vans and company cars.

Jenna Frudd, Wilmott Dixon

Jenna Frudd, Wilmott Dixon

The built environment generates 40% of annual global CO2 emissions, so we want to make sure we’re making a difference where it counts. This applies to our own business’ sustainability goals as well as helping our customers on their own sustainability journeys. We have a 2020-2030 sustainability strategy named Now or Never that includes ambitious targets. Two of these targets are to become a net-zero carbon business, as well as ensuring all new buildings and major refurbishments we deliver for our customers achieve net zero operational carbon by the end of the decade.

Scott Fullaway, Stepnell

Scott Fullaway, Stepnell

“At complete construction partner Stepnell, we are committed to using a local supply chain wherever possible to support a sustainable local low carbon economy. Our dedicated energy and renewables team, Step Energy, provides bespoke solutions to help our clients save energy and reduce their carbon output throughout the project lifecycle. By developing and delivering commercially appropriate renewable energy strategies, we can help clients meet their energy requirements and contribute to a low carbon built environment.”

Curtis Newsome, Eden Tyres and Servicing

Curtis Newsome branch manager eden tyres

We make sure that all our tyres are sent to a recycling centre, where they can be made into astroturf, riding areas or re-used in construction materials. Eden have also made the switch to electric vehicles for the management team & have been working to install EV charges in the branches. A bike to work scheme has recently been introduced & we’ve got a workshop full of tools to keep our bikes in top condition. We also make sure our oil is disposed of properly.

William Thomas, MSE Hiller

William Thomas MSE

“Here are a few improvements we have put in place at MSE to help make our business as sustainable as possible. We have a rainwater recovery system installed. The rainwater is stored in underground tanks where it is filtered and circulated throughout the workshop for further use on various applications such as our high-pressure wash bay. All our overhead lighting in the workshop has now been converted to energy efficient LED units. These units have built in motion sensors that turn off the LED’s when they are not required. We have also utilised our roof space by installing solar panels. These panels have proven to be incredibly efficient, halving our annual energy costs. In fact, the panels harvest so much energy that, in addition to our other energy recovery systems, it puts power back into the grid.”

Council appoints preferred bidder in the search for new Tapton Park Golf Course operator

Chesterfield Borough Council has appointed Link Golf UK as its preferred bidder in its search for a new operator to run Tapton Park Golf Course.

Since 2009 Sheffield City Trust has fulfilled the role under a lease agreement with the council, however the Trust will cease to operate later this year and the council has been seeking a new operator to take over the running of the courses and clubhouse.

Link Golf UK – formerly known as Love Golf – was selected as the preferred bidder following a marketing exercise which prioritised finding a suitably qualified operator with the financial ability to being fresh investment to the courses and clubhouse and a proven track record of increasing golf participation and delivering a range of community outreach activities.

Approval for the council to now enter into detailed negotiations was given by the council’s Cabinet on Tuesday 16 April. Subject to these proving successful, it is hoped Link Golf UK will officially take on the golf course lease from this summer.

Councillor Jonathan Davies, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “Tapton Park Golf Course is an important facility with fantastic potential in beautiful parkland.

“In seeking a new operator to look after the courses and clubhouse, we set out several long-term objectives with the intention of retaining it as a pay-and-play course that is open to all.

“Link Golf UK has proven expertise and experience of operating municipal golf courses. It has funding to invest in Tapton’s courses and clubhouse to maintain them to a high standard. It also offers a strong community outreach programme – and a commitment to work closely with the resident members’ club, which I know the members have welcomed.

“We will now begin detailed negotiations to finalise the terms of the lease. If and when Link Golf UK is formally appointed, we will work with it to announce the change-over date and address any issues that may affect customers. We anticipate that this will happen this summer.”

Tapton Park Golf Course features a full 18-hole course, 9-hole course, 6-hole pitch and putt course, a practice area, driving range, outbuildings, and a clubhouse. The course is built on parkland which was formerly part of the Tapton House estate.

In a joint statement, Andrew Terry and Joe Jackson, Directors of Link Golf UK, said: “We’re incredibly excited about the opportunity to breathe new life into Tapton Park Golf Course, including the driving range and clubhouse.

“Recognising its rich legacy we’re committed to maintaining its accessibility as a family-friendly venue. Our vision is to transform Tapton Park into a dynamic hub for family engagement, offering a range of activities that cater to all ages and skill levels. By incorporating the latest technology into the driving range and enhancing the overall experience, we aim to create a vibrant atmosphere where families can come together and enjoy quality time.

“Leveraging our proven track record in revitalising golf facilities, we’re confident in our ability to invest and innovate at Tapton Park. We look forward to working closely with Chesterfield Borough Council and the resident members club to ensure a bright and prosperous future for this beloved community asset.”

John Pearson, Chair of Tapton Park Golf Club, said: “Based on our initial discussions with Link Golf UK I am very optimistic for the future of Tapton Park Golf Club. We are really looking forward to working with Andrew and Joe to preserve and enhance the existing golf facilities for the benefit of the club’s members, local residents and visitors.”

Stanedge Golf Club features in popular YouTube TV series

A golf club set in the North Derbyshire countryside, just outside of Chesterfield has been featured in a popular YouTube TV series.

The docuseries Changing the Business of Golf is produced by Syngenta, and follows Stanedge owner and former professional golfer, Fame Tate.

In February 2022, golf in the UK was booming and Fame had brought Stanedge Golf Club back from the brink of extinction, transforming it into a thriving business at the heart of the community.

The first-time business owner has continued to ring the changes inside and out since then, but the unforeseen challenge of a sudden serious illness left the future of Stanedge hanging in the balance.

“Reflection is a wonderful thing and I’ve drawn a lot of positives from being forced to step away from the business,” says Fame in the new episode.

“It made me look at how I operate, the functionality of the business and my own time-management. Being here seven days a week, 365 days a year is just not possible.”

The episode also features key team members who stepped up in testing times, explaining how they coped with the overnight loss of their leader.

In the two years since Changing the Business of Golf was last at Stanedge, golf has continued to thrive in the UK, but clubs and courses have had to adapt to new customers, different expectations and fresh financial pressures.

Fame explains how Stanedge has continued to grow and push forward towards its targets, employing tactics to future-proof its long-term sustainability.

“Our core values have remained the same but obviously the business has changed and developed. I’ve had to change, everyone’s had to change and be on that journey,” she says.

The latest episode can be viewed below, and you can catch all previous episodes following Fame’s remarkable journey to transform the customer experience and make her club a friendly and inclusive community venue.

Construction begins on new electric forecourt at Markham Vale

Construction has officially started on a new electric forecourt at Markham Vale.

Gridserve has begun construction on the project, which will serve visitors, local businesses and communities around Markham Vale and the wider Derbyshire area.

Located on Enterprise Way and conveniently placed for passing motorway traffic, the new Electric Forecourt is scheduled to open this winter. It’s a significant milestone for the area and clean energy.

Once completed, Markham Vale Electric Forecourt will enable 30 electric vehicles to be charged simultaneously, with High Power chargers that can deliver up to 360kW, capable of adding 100 miles of range in less than 5 minutes. Multiple charging connectors will cater for all types of electric vehicles with contactless payment accepted, making it easier than ever to charge.

The site will be powered by net zero carbon energy as Gridserve continues to make vital changes to the UK EV infrastructure to support the decarbonisation of transport and move the needle on climate change.

While charging, visitors can enjoy a coffee in the comfortable waiting lounge with free superfast WiFi, plus convenience retail, a children’s play area and a dedicated EV educational space to increase understanding and awareness around electric vehicles. The Electric Forecourt will include disabled parking, access ramps, accessible washrooms and lifts to all areas, making easy charging accessible to all.

Gridserve Markham Vale

Rebecca Trebble, Chief Customer Experience Officer, said: “We are happy to keep the momentum going with our award-winning Electric Forecourts following the success opening of London Gatwick Electric Forecourt. We have found with our Electric Forecourt sites that they serve as an excellent hub for the local community and can help with the uptake of electric vehicles. Electric Forecourts offer the best charging and retail experience available and we can’t wait to welcome new and returning customers to the Markham Vale Electric Forecourt.”

Councillor Tony King, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, said: “Gridserve’s new Electric Forecourt will be a great addition to Markham Vale right next to the M1 motorway. It will help to give motorists the confidence to make the switch to an electric vehicle and move us closer to our target of getting hundreds more public facing electric vehicle charge points in place throughout the county.

“Decarbonising transport is one of our top priorities as part of our climate change strategy which aims to reduce emissions generated by the county council to net zero by 2032 or sooner and help the rest of Derbyshire reduce carbon emissions generated within the county to net zero by 2050 or sooner.”

David Wells, Director at HBD, said: “We’re pleased to be able to welcome Gridserve to Markham Vale as work starts on site. The project will enhance the scheme’s amenity offer, while also strengthening Derbyshire’s sustainability ambitions. We look forward to working alongside Gridserve as the new Electric Forecourt takes shape.”

Gridserve’s Electric Highway now has over 175 locations with more than 1,200 charging bays, with 11 new locations with 90 charging bays opened in the first three months of 2024.

Celebration event to mark Chesterfield Football Club’s return to the English Football League

Chesterfield Football Club’s loyal supporters are being invited to attend an official celebration event to mark the club’s return to the English Football League.

After the club claimed the Vanarama National League title on Saturday 23 March, Chesterfield Borough Council – working in partnership with the club – is pleased to confirm that the event will take place on Sunday 21 April.

Celebrations will get underway at the SMH Group Stadium at 2.30pm with the club’s players, coaching and backroom staff boarding open top buses to travel to the Town Hall.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Brough Council, said: “Our congratulations to Chesterfield Football Club on their promotion back into the English Football League. It is great for the Club and for their loyal band of supporters but also great for the town and the borough. A successful football club brings new visitors to the town and is a vital part of Chesterfield’s economy.

“The council and club both recognise the value of putting Chesterfield’s communities at the heart of everything we do. It’s therefore important that we come together and celebrate the club’s success with our communities.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the club and especially Paul Cook, his coaching and the players to the Town Hall. We hope to see plenty of supporters coming along and joining in with the celebrations too. It should be another brilliant occasion for the club and the town.”

Nick Clamp, WhatSpa? Media Group’s Editor-in-Chief added: “It’s been a pleasure to see Superior Wellness grow to become such a worldwide success in the hot tub, swim spa and wellness sectors, especially since they are headquartered right here in the UK.”

“It’s rare to see a brand scale to the levels that Rob and the team have achieved in the last 13 years, and we look forward to seeing more innovative new products from the Superior Wellness team over the next decade.”

Both WhatSpa? and WhatSwimSpa? magazines unveil their Best Buy Awards every year which feature the very best hot tubs and swim spas from the World’s leading brands. The awards acknowledge the hot tub and swim spa models that excel across a range of criteria, including design, aesthetics, comfort, hydrotherapy and value-for-money.

Steam train tour to arrive in Chesterfield and showcase local landmarks

Two steam train tours are set to arrive in Chesterfield, bringing passengers from the south of England to discover our historic landmarks.

The Steam Dreams Rail. Co, provider of unique and magical steam train journeys, will be hosting two incredible day trips to Chesterfield, one from East Anglia to Chatsworth, Crich & Barrow Hill on 8th May and another from London to Chatsworth, Crich & Barrow Hill Rail Ale Festival on 16th May.

The journeys will be pulled by the historic 46100 Royal Scot, providing visitors to immerse themselves in the glamour of yesteryear with an elegant steam-hauled journey. Once passengers arrive in Chesterfield, they will then be able to take part in several excursions around North Derbyshire’s landmarks.

Passengers are able to travel in one of three classes, including Pullman Dining, First Cass or Premium Standard.

A spokesperson for The Steam Dreams Rail. Co explained that there is plenty of exciting activities to get involved in whilst on the tour: “You can sink into your seats and relax as the train sets out for a wonderful journey through Amber Valley to the Peak District.

“Here, you have the option to continue your journey back in time to the Crich Tramway Museum, an immersive museum experience set within a recreated period village, where you can enjoy a ride on board the vintage trams. For glamour-seekers, your indulgent journey can be extended to the elegance of Chatsworth House. Alternatively, visit the town of Chesterfield or continue to Barrow Hill before we embark on our return journey aboard the same beautifully restored vintage carriages in which we started our journey.”

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield commented: “We’re excited to welcome passengers from the Steam Dreams Rail Co. tours to our historic town and surrounding areas.

“Being the place where George Stephenson spent the final years of his life, Chesterfield has always had a strong connection with steam.

“It will be wonderful to see the iconic 46100 Royal Scot arriving here, and I hope that passengers enjoy seeing our unique Crooked Spire, the beauty of Chatsworth and the Peak District, and of course the wonderful locomotives at Barrow Hill Roundhouse.”
