Volunteers required for the 2022 Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k

A call has been issued for volunteer marshals, to help at this year’s Chesterfield 10k. The Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k takes place on Sunday 16th October, beginning from 10am at Queen’s Park.

Volunteer marshals will help to play a key role in the success of the event and will be stationed at various points around the 10k course, assisting and supporting participants, residents, and spectators.

John Timms, Event Director, said: “The Chesterfield 10k wouldn’t be possible without the help of our volunteer marshals, and we’re eager to make this year’s 10k memorable whilst supporting the local charities; Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and The Redbrik Foundation.

“We are calling on volunteers to support the runners, cheer them on and get them around the course safely.

“The 10k truly is a community event, and volunteering is a great way to get involved without running the race itself. If you’ve got family and friends taking part, or if you’d simply like to get involved on the day, signing up to be a marshal is a great way to support the charities that provide extremely valuable services.”

James Branson, Senior Events Fundraiser at Ashgate Hospice, said: “Runners and spectators at the 10k last year all say how the atmosphere was fantastic, largely thanks to the support and enthusiasm of all our volunteers.

“If you can spare a few hours, it’s such a rewarding experience to witness the determination of the runners, as well as the amazing community spirit of the supporting locals.

“Marshalling is very straightforward, and you don’t need any experience. All volunteers are well looked after before and during the race.”

If you are aged 18 or older and are interested in volunteering at the 2022 Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k, contact Ashgate Hospice at events@ashgatehospice.org.uk or call the Fundraising Team on 01246 567250.

Redbrik supports the marketing and economic growth of the town through Chesterfield Champions, a network of over 200 organisations across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Chesterfield organisations support breastfeeding mothers with safe spaces

Community groups and local establishments in Chesterfield are working to ensure mothers can feed their children in a safe and welcoming environment.

An initiative has been launched by the University of Derby, who have announced they are opening their doors to offer a free and friendly breastfeeding support group. The drop-in sessions will run from the 15th of September on the first and third Thursday of the month, between 10:30am – 12:00pm at the Chesterfield St Helena campus.

Whether you are expecting a child, are new to parenting, or are further down your parenting journey- all are welcome. The group will be led by experienced breastfeeding supporters, who are trained and supervised by Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire. They will provide non-judgemental support and information for families attending the group.

“It’s great that the Community Chesterfield Project has enabled us to work with the University of Derby in this way.” Says Alexandra Dilkes from Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire. “It’s a wonderful venue, centrally located and easy to get to.”

Free refreshments will be provided, as well as a selection of toys to entertain the little ones. There is plenty of public parking available within a 2-minute walk of the venue but none on Campus.

“I am so glad that we were able to bring Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire back to the University of Derby in Chesterfield, they make such a big difference to parents – particularly in the early days of being a parent. It’s thanks to the University that we have been able to offer the group such a fantastic venue.” Says Jennifer Raschbauer from Community Chesterfield.

Over the last two years, local volunteers from Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire, known as Feeding Together Bolsover and Chesterfield, haven’t let the pandemic stop them supporting families. They have been providing remote support and running regular ‘Parent in the Park’ walks at Poolsbrook Country Park.

The organisation will also be running sessions at Staveley Healthy Living Centre and Bolsover Children’s Centre. To find out what exciting things they’ve got coming up, check out their Facebook pages (@Bolsoverbfgroup and @bfnderbyshire).

Meanwhile, community hub and café, Monkey Park has announced it has retained its ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ status once again.

The organisation has gained recognition from Derbyshire County Council, which commends businesses who actively support staff to make premises welcome for mothers to breastfeed. This can have a positive impact on making women feel able to breastfeed in public.

The Council says taking part in the initiative also provides a number of benefits for businesses, including:

  • attracting families by making them feel welcome, they will, therefore, be likely to stay longer and spend more
  • breastfeeding mums are also likely to return time after time to venues that they feel comfortable in
  • improved customer service
  • providing good publicity
  • attracting new customers

Valerie Wilkinson , operational manager at Monkey Park community hub, said; “Monkey Park is once again pleased to be recognised as a Breastfeeding Welcome café. This means nursing mothers won’t ever be asked to move-or leave. We strive to be an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. “

“We love to support our local community, and if we can help make parents more comfortable in our space when feeding their little ones then we are extremely proud to be recognised for this achievement.

“We hope our cosy café is a safe space for all parents to nurse their little ones, but if anyone would like more privacy when feeding then we do have a separate room where the blinds can be drawn for extra privacy and comfort if desired.

“Our staff will always offer nursing parents a glass of water as we understand that feeding your infant can be very thirsty work. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to our cosy and friendly café, and we hope we can make your visit enjoyable and comfortable.”

Three young people in the running for top apprentice title at the Love Chesterfield Awards

One young person is set to be named as the town’s top apprentice next month.

Henry Kay, Ria Smith and Will Brooks are all in the running for the prestigious Apprentice of the Year Award in the annual 2022 Love Chesterfield Awards, organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with Entire FM – Complete Facilities Management.

The award, which is sponsored by DBC Training, recognises apprentices that have made a significant contribution to the success of a local organisation.

Henry (21), a trainee accountant at BusinessWise Accountancy and Tax, follows in the footsteps of the company’s founder, who also started his career as an apprentice. “I’m happy to be considered for the Apprentice of the Year award, it feels great to be a finalist. I chose to do an apprenticeship because it was a good way to get into accounting without having to take the traditional university route; it was the better option for me.”

Graham Nash, Director of BusinessWise Accountancy and Tax added: “Apprenticeships provide good quality young people and the opportunity to mould best practice in business for both the apprentice and the company. I am the result of an apprenticeship and have seen many diamonds found and nurtured to reach great potential.”

Ria (22), who is a Support Office Assistant at Peak Pharmacy, began her career with the company when she assisted with its COVID-19 vaccination clinics. She said: “I feel very grateful to have been shortlisted for this award. I was so excited when I found out I had been nominated!

“During the pandemic, I was given the opportunity to work for Peak Pharmacy in its COVID-19 vaccination clinics both within Casa Hotel and the Clay Cross Pharmacy. I was ready to further my education and jumped at the opportunity when I saw Peak Pharmacy was advertising for an apprentice in its support office. I love the fast pace of the office and no two days are the same. My apprenticeship has allowed me to start from scratch and build a career for the future.”

Andrea Street, Head of Support Office at Peak Pharmacy said: “Having apprentices has given us the opportunity to develop and grow a talented and motivated workforce. The aim is to see them move into permanent roles within our company and continue their training. Ria’s energy and enthusiasm has without doubt had a positive impact on our Support team and across the company. She is a valued member of our team, and we couldn’t be happier that she chose to complete her apprenticeship with us!”

Will (19) who is a Digital Marketing Apprentice at Superior Wellness has taken on several additional marketing responsibilities in the business this year and has been praised by his employer for ‘stepping up’.

Will commented: “I’m very happy to be included in the shortlist for the Apprentice of the Year award. I chose the route of an apprenticeship as I feel it suited my work style much better than going to university and could give me experience in the workplace at a young age. It’s had a big impact on me in terms of my ambition and motivation.”

Sarah Elphick, Head of Marketing at Superior Wellness added: Apprenticeships are a great opportunity for people to start their careers and we are huge advocates of them. Will adapted to his role well and was keen to learn from day one.

“In April, our two marketing executives left the business, leaving Will and myself to take on several additional responsibilities. Will adapted to this change in a calm and professional way and was excited about the prospect of additional responsibilities. Will has really stepped up and is doing the same level of work as the marketing executives despite being at the start of his career.”

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield congratulated Ria, Will and Henry commenting: “Apprentices play such a pivotal role in fulfilling the town’s ambitions for growth. Having a pool of young talent is crucial both for our existing businesses and potential investors in the area so it’s important we give recognition to the apprentices and their employers who are helping them progress in their careers within the town.”

The Apprentice of the Year award is one of 15 categories in the 2022 Love Chesterfield Awards. The winners of all the categories will be announced at a glittering black-tie ceremony at The Winding Wheel Theatre on Wednesday 12 October.

‘Regeneration is not just confined to Chesterfield Town Centre’

Destination Chesterfield chair, Peter Swallow has given his thoughts on the town’s ongoing regeneration ahead of the 2022 Chesterfield Investment Summit.

September officially sees the end of summer and, let’s hope, this unnaturally hot weather.

While the heat has brought with it lethargy and exhaustion for many, the same can’t be said for Chesterfield’s ambitious investment plans which are to be put under the spotlight at the Chesterfield Investment Summit. And there is much to talk about.

The opening of the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre recently signified the completion of the first phase of the £20 million Northern Gateway regeneration scheme.

Phase 2 is already underway with the demolition of the former Chesterfield Hotel the redevelopment of which forms part of the ambitious Chesterfield Station Masterplan which will deliver regeneration of the area around Chesterfield train station.

Phase 1 has transformed the northern entrance to Chesterfield town centre so I have no doubt that phase 2 will be equally effective.  As well as the Enterprise Centre and transformation of the iconic 1920s iconic former Co-op department store into units targeted at food and drink businesses, the project also comprised the redevelopment of the Saltergate multi-storey car park, and improvements to the public space at Elder Way and Knifesmithgate.

The new office space at the Enterprise Centre will shortly be joined by One Waterside Place at Chesterfield Waterside. It’s a different offering to that provided at The Enterprise Centre, as it delivers larger floorplates, but offers accommodation which much needed in the town if we are to achieve our ambitions. Already, there are tenants set to move in – BHP Accountants, a long-standing Chesterfield business which, because of the availability of suitable new Grade A office space in the town, is able to remain in Chesterfield and grow their business further.

Make no mistake, the investment and regeneration in Chesterfield is not just confined to the town centre; it is happening throughout the borough.

The Staveley Works development, which is being delivered by Devonshire Group, will transform 150 hectares of former industrial land in Staveley into 700 homes, shops, leisure, a hotel, primary school, and a canal marina. It is considered the largest regeneration opportunity in the area.

Regeneration and construction are one thing, however a key success factor in Chesterfield’s growth and development is creating and promoting job opportunities in all sectors for everyone; they go hand in hand like the public/private partnerships which are transforming the town and surrounding areas.

I am immensely proud of the ongoing work by all partners – public and private, to not only transform the town but ensure all young people in Chesterfield are aware of the many job opportunities here. It is a team effort, and the results very much speak for themselves.

UK’s first ever ‘Splash Zone’ for dogs unveiled in Chesterfield

An award-winning  Chesterfield doggy day care centre has launched a brand-new splash zone for our canine companions.

Rose Cottage developed the new feature, thought to be the first of its kind in the country, in response to the recent heatwave seen in many parts of the UK. It means dogs at the centre can enjoy playing in the water while keeping cool during the summer months.

Dawn Brown, owner of Rose Cottage Doggy Day Care commented: “I developed the Splash zone as this another petal to our Rose I am always thinking of ways in which we can be the best at what we do, and this means always thinking ahead,  we knew Summer was approaching and what is a better way to keep your Dogs cool than their very own a splash zone.

“We are a mini theme park for Dogs and playing in clean free flowing water with their pals is also mentally stimulating, great for joints and teaches the dogs how to play in a different kind of environment.”

Exercising in the water can have a number of benefits for dogs, as Dawn outlined: “Since water is denser than air, your dog’s movement through the water causes a resistance that is evenly distributed against their body, so this movement helps to work all of the muscles without gravity pushing down on their joints. The water is not to deep so at a safe level to play, get fit and strong while having fun.”

Dawn also commented on how exited the team at Rose Cottage was to bring the new feature to fruition: “I can’t tell you how much of a buzz I get when one of my ideas comes to life and I see just how happy the Dogs are playing in there it just makes all the hard work of getting it ready worthwhile.

“Seeing a dog leave an owner’s car in the morning and head straight towards my gate with their tail wagging eager to enter Rose Cottage makes it even more special. I’m so happy I can provide a little piece of haven for dogs in our town and I am constantly thinking of more initiative ways of adding to Rose Cottage. We also have our very own online shop www.doglanddeals.com  and more to come so watch this space!”

“To use the splash zone, you need to register your doggy with us. This is easy to do with our online forms at: www.rosecottagedoggydaycare.co.uk

SDE Group to offer customers a ‘zero-carbon pathway’ with new business unit

Chesterfield’s SDE Group is set to provide customers with advice and solutions on cutting their costs and carbon footprint.

SDE Energy Solutions will be able to offer customers (domestic & commercial) a suite of services from Solar, Battery, Wind & Heat solutions for home or estate management at work place locations.

The company has made significant investment into this new business unit by recruiting industry experts & the relevant accreditations to operate in the market place.

Jonathan Bennett, Managing Director at SDE Group commented: “At SDE Group, we are always looking for ways to keep up with current trends and increase our sustainability efforts. Our business strategy for the last 12 months – ‘A Pathway to Become Carbon Neutral’ – has been to offer renewable energy to other companies to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases.

“Given the increasingly high energy costs, we feel extremely fortunate to be able to offer businesses a solution that will not only have a huge impact on their internal costs, but also environmental factors too. This is complimented by our EV Solutions business – SDE Electrical which helps support the reduction in high energy costs for consumer and workplace. “Providing services such as wind turbines also contribute to fewer global warming emissions as well as improving your community image by showcasing your efforts to become a more sustainable company. Investing in renewable technologies will also help businesses to improve on their public relations in becoming more environmentally friendly, which could be the difference between them been chose over competitors.”

Chesterfield Community provides diamond anniversary to remember for local couple

A Chesterfield Care Home and the wider community came together recently, in order to provide a diamond anniversary to remember for  local couple.

Valerie and Harry Holloway celebrated their 60th anniversary on 11 August 2022, with help from Crown Care Group’s Belvedere House Care Home, local councillors and residents.

The idea to treat the coupe to a big celebration came about a few days before the anniversary, when County Councillor Lisa Blakemore introduced Valerie to Belvedere House and County Councillor Jenny Flood took the initiative to accompany her to a pamper day.

This was a significant change as Valerie had not left the house to socialise or participate in activities for quite some time.

With so much collective support and care, the team at Belvedere House worked meticulously over several days to make sure that the Holloway family would have a wonderful time. A special meal accompanied by champagne, flowers, and a beautiful anniversary card marked the celebration and warmly complimented the day.

Claire Adsetts, Customer Relations Manager at Crown Care Group said: “We are so humbled and overjoyed to be able to play a part in such a significant event, to share responsibility within our community. We would like to thank our county councillors for their great work and trust in us.”

Shiva Sheikholeslami, Belvedere House Home Manager, said: “our ethos is to raise awareness about good practice in Care and set an example by providing the best service to the elderly in our care home. In turn, we are rewarded by the satisfaction and pride expressed by our residents. We achieve this by continuously collaborating with the fantastic Chesterfield community on projects that can make a difference.”

Things are brewing up nicely for new North Derbyshire craft fair event

A new local craft fair will be going all out to ‘roll out the barrel’ when it launches this September.

The Craft and Gift Fair at Drone Valley Brewery in Unstone, Derbyshire, takes place on 11th September and is not just offering crafters a new stage for their wares, but a fun day out for all with live music also on the menu as well as the chance for visitors to sample the brewery’s own selection of award-winning real ales.

The new event will be featuring everything from unusual crystal gifts and felted woodland animals to beautiful wood-burnt carvings; quirky plant pots; sparkling arrays of handcrafted jewellery; scented candles; knitwear and gift sets of every description.

For Fair organiser Caroline Thompson from Dronfield, who also initiated the idea, it’s the culmination of a lot of hard work designed to give local businesses, creative talent, the local economy and lovers of arts and crafts, a big post-Pandemic boost.

“As a craft person myself, I love visiting these sort of events but there aren’t many in our corner of Derbyshire,” she said.

“So I thought, why not start one? Since then, I’ve been amazed at the response from local creative businesses. For visitors, we’ll be adding some extra fun to the event with live music. It’s also a great opportunity to raise the profile of Drone Valley Brewery as an amazing community enterprise and venue in its own right.”

Now into its seventh year, the brewery was conceived, built and continues to be run, entirely by volunteers. All profits are ploughed back into local causes with additional support given by playing host to charities for their fund-raising events.

“Supporting our local community is very much at the core of the brewery’s philosophy.” said Caroline, who is a volunteer there herself. “But we also believe in having fun while we’re doing it, so a craft fair with live music, certainly fitted the bill.”

There are still a few stalls left to book at the amazing introductory offer of just £10. “Obviously, we’re hoping it will be such a big success, it will become part of our regular calendar of events, which has got to be a win-win situation for everyone.”

The event takes place on Sunday 11th September and runs from 10am-3pm.

To book a stall contact Caroline on: dvdcraft22@gmail.com.  For visitor information, visit: www.dronevalleybrewery.com
