Chesterfield to welcome new board games café to town centre

Excitement is building for the opening of Chesterfield’s first ever board game café, which is on track to open in the town centre later this year.

Board and Bean will be a location for people of all ages to enjoy locally sourced food, drink and play games. The venue will also be dog friendly.

Renovations are now taking place at the café – formerly the H&F café and tearooms on New Beetwell Street.

Co-owner of the new venue, John McAssey is opening it alongside two colleagues. He commented: “We have grown up in Chesterfield and love the area. Hopefully we will bring something new and exciting to our town.

“Our games library is growing every day and we expect there to be around 500 games on offer at launch on 1st December 2024. We will have a great variety of games from classic pub games to long spanning role playing games.”

Board and Bean will also host special evening events with a focus on tabletop role-playing games, Blood on the Clocktower, miniature painting and more.

The café will boast hand crafted “proper” board game tables, which people will be able to book online. The business will be using new “Guru” software to help customers in making better gaming choices based on the player count, time available and ease of play.

Owners John, Andy and Clint are aiming to turn Board and Bean into a community hub, bringing gamers in Chesterfield and beyond together, allowing people find new games and link up with others. A membership will also be available, which includes discounted food and drink, table charges and event access. Furthermore, the business is looking to work with other like-minded venues in Chesterfield to provide benefits to members.

Renovations are starting soon to ensure disability access throughout the café. A space which is currently partially covered space twill be turned into more indoor space to allow for two rooms to game and socialise.

Nick Hogan, Destination Chesterfield board member commented: “We are very excited for the upcoming opening of Board and Bean in Chesterfield.

“The venue will add to our town’s leisure offer, providing hours of fun and a locally sourced menu for those who visit.

“I’m positive that Board and Bean will be enjoyed by residents and visitors coming in Chesterfield, adding even more vibrancy to our town and giving people another great place to spend their free time with loved ones.”

Duo make their business dreams a reality as new French Toast Cafe opens on Whittington Moor

A brand-new cafe specialising in French Toast and sweet treats has opened it’s doors to customers on Whittington Moor, adjacent to the SMH Group Stadium.

Chapter Two is bringing a unique new culinary experience to our town, creating a one stop dessert and coffee shop under one roof.

The business has been launched by Kim Greaves and Steve Oxley. Kim explained how excited she is to be launching her business in an area she loves.

“I moved to Chesterfield when I was 13 years old (Kim) and I never left. I currently live in Hasland with my two children This is my home town and a town that I love.

“Chesterfield football club is very close to my heart. I took over my late husbands season ticket after he passed away in March 2021. I have found a new passion for football and Chesterfield FC. My 10 year old son and I love going to the games. My late husband (Andrew Greaves) also has a plaque in the memorial garden at the club and it’s nice to be so close to that.

“Sheffield Road, close to the football stadium has become a very busy and popular area. We’re very excited to be a part of that.”

Chapter Two aims to create a relaxed social space, where people can gather with family and friends to catch up over a cup of something warm and enjoy a delicious sweet or savoury dish.

While French Toast is their speciality, the cafe also serves freshly prepared waffles, crepes, American pancakes, Croque Madame, Croque Monsieur, cakes, sandwiches, sausage rolls and Afternoon Tea. These can be enjoyed at any time of day, from breakfast to lunch to dinner.

Kim explained how the idea came about: “Steve and I both love french toast but not many people know that french toast can be served with a range of sweet and savoury toppings.

“Occasionally you’ll see French toast make an appearance in some eateries as a special item on a menu. We wanted to spin this around and create a full menu based around fresh toast as our speciality.”

Alongside their investment in the new premises, which sits next to The Glassworks Pub and Elevation Hair Salon, Kim and Steve have put weeks of time and effort into making their dream a reality.

Kim explains: “We have carried out all the interior work ourselves. We took on the cafe as a blank canvas. It was originally a residential building with a change of usage. We have reclaimed and recycled most of the decor and we are particularly proud of the wood features around the counter area that we made using reclaimed pallets.

“We were both nervous and excited to open our doors on Monday. As all the work has been carried out by ourselves (including Steve’s cooking) we just hoped that it would be received well by the people of Chesterfield. So far the comments and feedback have been nothing but positive.

“Opening an independent business is a huge risk. We don’t have the branding or financial resources behind us to make the business an immediate success. We value all feedback good and bad, and word of mouth is a valuable tool so if people are visiting us and talking about us, then we can continue to offer our unique French toast cafe to Chesterfield!”

Nick Hogan, Destination Chesterfield Board Member welcomed Chapter Two to Chesterfield, commenting: “It is very pleasing to see another independent business opening its doors on Whittington Moor, bringing another unique offer to residents and visitors in our town.

“With Chesterfield FC on the doorstep and so many unique independent businesses based there, Whittington Moor continues to thrive as a destination for food, drink, and leisure.

“I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing the team at Chapter Two every success with their new venture”

Keep up with the latest updates from Chapter Two on their Facebook and Instagram pages.

Expansion for popular Chesterfield café and restaurant

A popular Chesterfield town centre café and restaurant has expanded, enabling it to serve more customers its wide range of food and drink.

No.10, a family-run business based on South Street has been open since 2008 – and over the last 15 years has continued to gain popularity, serving tasty home-cooked food.

The café has now opened a brand-new upstairs area, with seating available for 40 people. The room, which has a modern and homely feel, can also be hired for private functions, such as birthday parties, baby showers and hen parties.

Keith Todd, Owner of No.10 launched the business after being inspired by his father, who was a sergeant and chef in the army.

Keith says growing the business has been tough but rewarding, especially after the difficult trading period the business faced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He commented: “We’ve always had strong work ethics and needed to think of an alternate way of keeping going, hoping that our family business would survive.

“Our dining area was transformed into a mini supermarket stocking up with essentials from our suppliers. My son Adrian went from Café Manager to Delivery Driver taking essential goods to customers all over the area. Many people gifted Afternoon Teas to relatives that needed a pick-me-up during such a stressful point in our lives.”

However, the business recovered quickly once lockdown restrictions were eased, and Keith soon realised the premises needed to expand to cater for the ever-growing footfall.

He added: “Every day we were having to turn people away as we just didn’t have enough seating to meet the demand. At this point, we decided we needed to make the huge decision to try and expand further.

“This definitely came with huge amounts of issues, plenty of blood, sweat and tears, but we did it!”

The business is now looking to add an entertainment offering to help bring more people into the town centre, Keith said: “Our long-term aim is to offer events every night of the week, from Open Mic and Quiz Nights to Psychic Medium Evenings and Paranormal Investigations.

“We have bookings for a very popular Magician who specialises in Mentalism Magic. We just want to try and offer something for everyone under one roof.

“Chesterfield is definitely on the up and a town of growth and we hope to be a part of the growing entertainment community, not just be a cafe and restaurant which people know and love us for. My motto is ‘always look to improve and never stop developing’, which is very much like Chesterfield.”

New café added to bustling Chatsworth Road food & drink scene

A new café has opened on Chatsworth Road in Chesterfield, becoming the latest addition to the popular food and drink offer in the area.

Café Nellie promises a relaxed and informal atmosphere, and will offer popular favourites such as scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, pâté and hummus plates, and of course a delightful range of cakes and sweet treats.

Owner Tracey Wallis has opened the new venture following five years trading as the Pekoe Café, also based on Chatsworth Road. She said she was delighted to be welcoming customers old and new to the café.

“Café Nellie has been a huge project but the results are definitely worth all the planning and hard work. The team from The Pekoe Café have all transferred to Café Nellie and it has been a real pleasure to welcome many of our loyal customers. We have seen lots of  new faces too  – great to meet you all, we genuinely appreciate your support. We hope you will all give a real Cestrafeldrian welcome to Zhanna, our new friend and colleague, recently arrived from Ukraine and now a valued member of our team.

“We are very happy to still be part of The Chatsworth Road Community and our new neighbours have quickly become friends. This next year or so small, local businesses are going to face some real challenges – we hope we can all work together to make positive things happen for our great town of Chesterfield.

“The question we get asked most is ‘Who is Nellie?’  Well,  Nellie was the most wonderful rescue Staffy dog you could wish to meet. She loved food and enjoyed human company and so do we, so it seemed like a good name for our new venture!  Dogs are very welcome at Café Nellie – but please bring your owners with you, we can’t rescue you all!”

The café will also offer afternoon teas available to pre-book with 24 hours notice, along with stocking four different types of coffee. The special Café Nellie branded coffee is available to buy from the business, so customers can enjoy a delicious ‘cuppa’ in the comfort of their own homes. Customers can buy the coffee as beans or freshly ground depending on their preference.
