Have your say on Chesterfield town centres

Chesterfield residents and local business owners are being encouraged to complete our quarterly consumer and business surveys to help us to learn more about how you / your customers use services in our town centres.

Love Chesterfield is a campaign organised by Chesterfield Borough Council in partnership with Destination Chesterfield to promote and support high streets and town centres across the borough of Chesterfield.

The quick surveys will ask you questions about your business performance and any changes you have noticed in the last three months (October – December 2022) if you are a business owner, and the consumer survey will ask you to update us on what events or venues you have attended and services you have used recently in our communities.

Please spend a few minutes to complete the relevant questionnaire. The results will allow us to monitor the performance of the town, the success of marketing campaigns and business support and will help to shape future activity to support high street businesses across the borough.

The survey will close on 20th February 2023.

At the end of the consumer questionnaire, there is an opportunity to win two tickets to see Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story at the Winding Wheel.

Complete the surveys here…

Chesterfield’s independent businesses announce special offers for ‘Fiver Fest’

Saturday 8 to Saturday 22 October 2022 will see many of the great independent businesses of Chesterfield putting on special £5 offers as they take part in the 9th Totally Locally Fiver Fest.

Fiver Fest is a national initiative run by Totally Locally, the UK’s biggest grass-roots High Street campaign. The initiative aims to encourage the ‘local community’ to get on board and support our independent businesses.

The businesses taking part have put on offers for a FIVER to entice you into their business, give them a go and hopefully remind yourself of the great places we have in our town.

The initiative is all about keeping money in the local area, supporting the high street and working together to make Chesterfield a better place.

People are encouraged to watch the ‘Tale of a Tenner’ video on Youtube, which shows, in a simple way, how shopping locally can make a huge difference to the place we live.

Paul Chapman from S40 Local magazine says, “Fiver Fest is a chance for local independent businesses to join a much larger family for a couple of weeks.

“Totally Locally are the guys behind the national Fiver Fest campaign and it enables businesses to create an offer for a fiver that we can all take up. We might not need every offer but there must be one or two that most of us could enjoy. My advice is to look out for the offers and support these fab local businesses.

“I know we’re all feeling the pinch at the moment but every penny we spend with a local indy business tends to stay local and has a positive impact on the local economy.

“I’m a small indy businesses just like those taking part so it’s important that I do what I can to support them through S40 and S41 Local magazines together with Simon Paterson, and Defeye Creative, the team behind Unhampered-Chesterfield.co.uk

At the time of writing, offers are available from Adorn Jewellers, Delightful Décor, Empire Coffee Lounge & Bar, Flower Girl Plants, Fred’s Haberdashery, Ingmans Cobblers, M’s Gallery, Oculi Opticians, Pizza Pi, Plasters For Disasters, Shop Indie, Steph’s Sustainable Stuff, Stonecraft Ornaments, Straightcurves, Tallbird Records, The Vintage Tea Rooms, Tina’s Make & Mend and Twelfthcraft… a couple of sample offers include a pair of stud ear rings for a fiver from Shop Indie or a pair of socks for a fiver from Ingman’s Cobblers.

There will be additional offers from many more businesses so look out for them, and be sure to spend a fiver or two with our fantastic ‘indy businesses.’

Popular Chesterfield Vegan Market to become a monthly event

It has been revealed that the new Chesterfield Vegan Market will feature as a regular monthly event, following its huge success since launching in the historic heart of the town centre.

At the first event in May, the Vegan Market attracted more than 30 stalls, providing a huge variety for customers; ranging from chocolate treats, vegan cheese, award winning gluten free pies, a local animal rescue centre, handmade items, zero waste goods and even TV star vegan caterers.

One of the stallholders, ‘Huns’ were recently on the BBC’s ‘Britain’s Top Takeaway’ with their chicken style burgers. Hot food caterers were plentiful with a great range including crepes, curries, bangers & mash, Ethiopian food, burgers and pizzas.

Following the launch event in May, the Vegan Market has continued to go from strength-to-strength with another successful outing in early July. The popularity of the market has ensured the event will return on the first Saturday of each month from September through to the end of 2022.

Chesterfield Vegan Market organiser Sam Brundish, of Rainbow Monkey Events commented: “It was great to bring this event back to Chesterfield in early July and, by popular demand, this will be a monthly event on the first Saturday from September through to the end of the year!

“We are absolutely delighted to be bringing something quite unique to Chesterfield town centre. We would urge customers to come and support their local market traders – we welcomed The Refill Fairy, Cup and Saucer Teas and Flower Girl Plants – all of whom are regulars at Chesterfield market. Customers will also get to see traders from elsewhere in the Midlands who only bring their varied foods and products to Chesterfield Vegan Market.

“One tip we would say is arrive early to avoid disappointment – stallholders quickly sell out of gluten free pies, cheesecakes, bliss balls, sausage rolls and cheese!”

New retailer now open at Chesterfield’s Vicar Lane Shopping Centre

Chesterfield’s Vicar Lane Shopping Centre has welcomed ‘One Beyond’ to it’s diverse range of retailers, as the store opened its doors in a prominent town centre location.

The new discount store officially opened on Friday, created by the original founders of national chain Poundworld. The popular brand has taken over the former TJ Hughes store near St James’ Square.

One Beyond will offer thousands of essential items across many departments including essential cleaning, groceries, medical, home, pet care, health, beauty and DIY. Many items will be priced at £1 and under but as the name suggests there will be some incredible bargains to be had for £1 and beyond.

The ribbon was officially cut outside the shop last Friday, with the store greeting it’s first 100 shoppers with a small freebie to celebrate the launch.

Sarah Bowler from Vicar Lane said: “We are always really pleased to welcome new tenants to the centre. It was great to support One Beyond with their opening launch and to see so many local faces coming out to be the first inside the doors. Being able to fill an empty unit in the current climate and offer variety for Vicar Lane shoppers is paramount and so we wish One Beyond every success in their first quarter trading – and beyond!”

Based in the heart of Chesterfield, Vicar Lane Shopping Centre is  home to a range of popular high-street retailers and a mix of unique independent stores. Find out more about the centre, and shopping in Chesterfield here.

More than 30 businesses choose Chesterfield town centre for their new home

More than 30 new businesses have opened in Chesterfield town centre in the last 12 months with six more due to open in the coming weeks.

The new businesses, which include Barkworthy Dog Emporium, Kooca, Chesterfield Escape Rooms and Boba Shack, show how the town is not standing still – and is in a strong position to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

Cibo Bistro, Fat Pig BBQ, Little Dessert Shop, WiseGuys, and Snowflakes Desert Shop are all set to open imminently. Additionally, the Market Hall has welcomed four pop-up stores – Hobson’s Choice, Sparky’s Treats, The Little Ark, and Adelante Antiques. Louise Spence, Bistro Supervisor and Coordinator at Cibo which will open later this month on Low Pavement, said: “We hope with the support of the people of Chesterfield behind us we can add something new and exciting to our town, truly believing with your support anything is possible!

“We are a great advocate of helping independent local businesses and encourage all of us to get behind local suppliers and companies, creating jobs for local people.  We hope the kind people of Chesterfield will come and give us a try in the coming weeks.”

Praising the town, Anthony Foster is the owner of one of the new businesses which has opened in the last 12 months, Barkworthy Dog Emporium in Theatre Yard. He said: “It’s fair to say we were captivated by the town immediately, its bustling market and quaint alleys which led us to all sorts of independent local shops. This immediately piqued our interest, for that is exactly what we planned to do – set up a quirky, emporium style outlet that catered for dog lovers everywhere, focused on natural products and ethically sustainable.”

In addition to new businesses, since 2021 nine businesses have also expanded into larger premises in the town centre, these include Rebel, Pizza Pi, Vintage Tea Rooms, Bee-Orchid and Twelfth Craft.

Chesterfield as a community and town centre has always supported us so it’s only right we invest back in the town centre and community. We believe the future of Chesterfield Town is bright and will only get brighter as more investment is made into the town centre.”

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “It’s great to welcome new businesses to Chesterfield town centre and celebrate those who are expanding and investing in our town. We’re making a significant investment across our town centre which will further boost business confidence by attracting more visitors and shoppers. Our town centre will be the go-to place to live, work, socialise and shop.”

Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre is due to open for business shortly – further boosting activity in the town centre.
