Local charities and partners return for the 2025 Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K

The Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K has announced the return of its charity partners and sponsors for its 2025 event.

Scheduled for May 11th at Queen’s Park, this annual running event continues to unite the community while supporting local charities and promoting wellbeing.

The returning charity partners include the Redbrik Foundation as title sponsor, alongside Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, and Cavendish Cancer Care. The event also welcomes back Pronto Paints as a sponsor of the Fun Run and Wellbeing Challenge, alongside other returning sponsors Nuzest, Chapter II, North Derbyshire Running Club, and Chesterfield Borough Council.

Established in 2020, the Redbrik Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of people and communities across South Yorkshire and Northeast Derbyshire. The charity mainly focuses on children, young people, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

Ashgate Hospice delivers essential palliative and end-of-life care services for adults across North Derbyshire. Their involvement in the 10K helps fund their comprehensive range of services, from specialist nursing care to bereavement support.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, another returning charity partner, provides crucial support to families facing the heartbreaking reality of a child with a shortened life expectancy. Funding helps them continue offering services such as respite care, music therapy, and end-of-life care, all provided free of charge to families in need.

Cavendish Cancer Care supports individuals and families affected by cancer through a holistic approach to care. Their partnership with the event helps fund their range of services, including counselling, complementary therapies, and specialized support for children and young people, both online and at their dedicated Tim Pryor Centre.

Now in its fourth year, the Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K will showcase Chesterfield’s landmarks, including the famous Crooked Spire, and will feature service and cheer stations along the route. Since 2017, more than £250,000 has been raised for various charities and good causes by the 10K races Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield Half Marathon.

BRM Chesterfield Festival of Cricket returns this summer with four exciting matches

The BRM Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council, will return to Queen’s Park this summer.

The Falcons Men return to one of the UK’s most picturesque cricket grounds on Sunday 6 July (2.30pm), to face Yorkshire in T20 action.

2024’s encounter saw the Falcons extend their unbeaten streak over the White Rose at Chesterfield to seven games, and they’ll be aiming to continue their good form in 2025.

Before that, cricket fans can soak up plenty of action in our town as Falcons Women take on Worcestershire Rapids on Saturday 28 June in the Vitality Blast Women’s League Two (T20).

Derbyshire Men will then face Lancashire in the Rothesay County Championship (First-class) on Sunday 29 June – Wednesday 2 July.

Then, The Blaze will take to the field against Hampshire Women on Friday 4 July in the Vitality Blast Women’s Competition (T20).

The T20 fixture between Derbyshire and Yorkshire has become a regular fixture in the cricketing calendar and has sold out on each of the last six occasions, so it is recommended fans secure their tickets early.

New owners of Chesterfield’s oldest pub say venue has ‘huge potential’

The new owners of Chesterfield’s oldest pub say they have big plans for the venue after recently receiving the keys to their new business.

Meg Hartman and Patrick Hopkins are the landlords of Ye Royal Oak, based in Chesterfield’s historic Shambles in the heart of the town. The couple are currently working as teachers, and are balancing the pub’s renovation with their demanding jobs.

Speaking about their decision to take on the pub, which is claimed to date back to the 12th century, Meg explained: “Having lived in Chesterfield for almost three years now, we frequently passed the Royal Oak and spoke about how we’d love to be in the position to buy the pub to transform it back to being a beautiful boozer.

“We are currently both teachers (Patrick – a secondary history teacher – and Meg – a special needs primary school teacher) and while this has been a rewarding career for us both, it has been a lifelong dream of ours to own a pub. We knew that we wanted something in the area and we also wanted a historic pub whose heritage we could celebrate and restore. The Royal Oak, obviously, ticked both of these boxes and we were fortunate enough to be in a position to buy the pub as independent owners.”

The couple say once the pub is back up and running, they are keen to turn it into a venue which can be used by all corners of the local community.

Meg added: “We think it has huge potential as a town centre venue. We are aiming to be a wet led pub with a warm and welcome atmosphere selling regional, national and international craft ale, beer and cider. Having both spent a lot of time working up in the Highlands, we also hope to provide a robust whisky offering.

“Our food offering will be a fine selection of bar snacks (think butties, pork pies, sausage rolls, pickled eggs and the best crisp selection you could imagine). As we become more settled in the rituals and routines of Royal Oak life, we may look to extend this offering to pies and toasties. We will also have a solid roster of regular events (such as a weekly pub quiz, folk sessions, chess nights) as well as one-off events (tap takeovers, meet the brewers etc.). We are also hoping to serve as a space for groups within the local community to come together and connect.”

Since moving to Chesterfield three years ago, Meg and Patrick say they have fallen in love with the town and its people: “We love living in Chesterfield. It’s such a great town that is really made by the people that live here. We have had such an overwhelmingly lovely response from locals who love the pub and have shared their own stories with us.

“We feel very supported in this venture. As the oldest pub in Chesterfield, we are thrilled to add to its layers of history and want to do our best to preserve its heritage. We are looking forward to collaborating with local pub history tours to bring in locals and visitors to the town alike to share in the thrilling history of the town’s pubs. Sitting just in the Shambles, we are looking forward to the developments being made in the market and look forward to being a destination for shoppers to come for a pint, a coffee or a chat. We are also looking forward to joining a network of superb local independent businesses.”

Chesterfield Pride announces line-up for 10th anniversary event

Chesterfield Pride has announced an exciting line-up for its 10th anniversary event this July.

The festival, which sees thousands of visitors celebrating in Stand Road Park returns on Saturday July 19th.

The event will have two stages, with the main stage to be headlined by chart-topping boyband, 911. The group scored 10 top ten singles in the UK including a number one single. The Main Stage will also see performances from MOBO award-winning Big Brovaz, chart-topper and West End star Diana Vickers, 90s artists Alex Party and Berri.

Also announced on this year’s lineup is the iconic Honey G, Pride legend Kelly Wilde, Dene Michael from Black Lace and Britain’s Got Talent star, Rob King.

The event also hosts the Cabaret Stage which will see some of the UK’s most well-known drag artists appearing, alongside the best in unsigned talent. This year’s Cabaret Stage will see performances from the fabulous Baga Chipz, Fatt Butcher and Bernie De Bra. Aditionally, this stage will see some of the world’s best tributes including Donna Marie as Lady Gaga and Melissa Totten as Madonna. Unsigned artists appreating at the event include Toni Lee, Poppy-Mai, Davey Stuart and Lexi Whiteside.

Chesterfield Pride Organiser, Dan Walker commented: “I am so proud to see the event reach its 10th Birthday. To see Chesterfield Pride grow over 10 years has been fantastic. To know we are now the region’s biggest LGBTQ celebration is an amazing achievement. The event has a fantastic team of volunteers working on it to make it happen.

‘This February – the month of love – take a moment to feel proud of where you live’

In her February blog post, Destination Chesterfield Board Member, Ann Fomukong-Boden, reflects on the reasons why she loves her town. 

On Valentine’s Day, we celebrate love. Not just for our partners, but for all the people, places, and little joys that make life special.

For me, Chesterfield’s character, community, and charm are just three of the reasons why I love where I live.

My old local, the Chesterfield Arms holds a special place in my heart, and I love stopping in there to relax and enjoy the cosiness on a chilly winter’s evening. Of course, their selection of ales certainly helps to warm the soul!

Our town boasts many beautiful green spaces, and you only need travel fifteen minutes from our town centre to arrive at the iconic Peak District National Park. Plenty of spots to create memories with those you love. I personally love a stroll with family and friends. Our little one loves to wear her hiking backpack, and any outdoor activity must be complemented by a delicious pub lunch! Getting outdoors in the fresh air is an excellent way to fall in love with the local area.

Queen’s Park continues to bring a smile to our daughter’s face – with its grassy picnic spots, playgrounds full of laughter, and the iconic choo-choo of Puffin’ Billy, our miniature train.

I also love many of our indoor options for the UK’s rainy days. Chesterfield Escape Rooms, Geeks Headquarters and the new Board & Bean café provide warm spaces to indulge in a hobby and spend quality time together.

But above all, what truly makes Chesterfield? For me, it’s our people.

Our shop owners love a friendly chat with you and go out of their way to help. Neighbours look out for one another. Finally, you can feel the warmth at our community events like the Chesterfield Children’s Festival and the Ashgate Hospice Superhero Walk. I could certainly feel the warmth at my own town centre event this year – Social Fuse, which celebrated social enterprises across our area.

I work alongside many people in our town, and I love to see our businesspeople pour their hearts into their work to create spaces where we can connect, shop, and enjoy life. These hard-working individuals keep our high streets bustling and our community spirit alive.

So, this February – the month of love – take a moment to feel proud of where you live. To soak up our town’s character, community and charm. Whether savouring our food, our family-friendly spaces, or our wonderful people, show a little extra love to our places and faces that make life in our town so meaningful.

Chesterfield’s new board game café is now open

After months of anticipation, Chesterfield’s first dedicated board game café is now open to customers.

Board & Bean will bring people together over games of all types and genres, alongside a helping of food & drink.

Co-owner of the new venue, John McAssey commented: “We are overwhelmed at the positivity received when we first announced this a couple of months ago. The people of Chesterfield and surrounding areas have put their trust in us with many becoming members early to help support our project. We have made an inclusive space for all to come and enjoy, relax and socialise.”

John explains the amount of work that he and his team have put into making the space inclusive and accessible: “The floor has been levelled, ramps added and we raised the floor to ensure easy access to our self contained toilets. The tables and games library have been lovingly crafted by Andy who originally had the idea of opening a board game cafe. The building work has been completed by Clinton to a really high standard and he will be in the cafe day to day to ensure everyone has a great experience. Our private Annex room is also available if you need a space away from the main room.”

Whilst in the process of developing the venue into a warm and friendly space for gaming, the Board & Bean team has also established links within the local business community to help support the local economy.

John added: “Growing up in Chesterfield and seeing what great things our town has to offer really cemented that we need to collaborate with other like minded businesses and entrepreneurs. We have been working hard to create a great community within our entertainment and hobby spaces.

“Geeks Headquarters, which offers a one stop shop to get all your gaming needs, have worked with us to provide Board & Bean members with 10% discount on board games. We will be providing Chesterfield Escape Rooms visitors discounts on food and drink. Not forgetting the amazing local groups to provide sessions for people to paint, make comics, play role playing games and a lot more coming soon.

“Our passion project is also focusing on the community working with the Derbyshire Connectors programme bringing people with learning difficulties together. Local groups and charities will be a focus and we are currently working with WORTH, Wee See Hope and Mindsight to provide a space to raise some much needed funds for great causes.

“We love Chesterfield, it is where we have grown up and live. There are some amazing spaces and we want to help shine a light on these while working in partnership. Safe space launched for people enjoying a night out in Chesterfield

A ‘safe space’ in the heart of Chesterfield is helping to keep partygoers and vulnerable people safe – whilst also taking pressure off the emergency services.

Chesterfield’s Safe Space is a multi-agency initiative that aims to provide support to anyone who may feel vulnerable or in need of support.

Located at Old Parish Café, 3 St Mary’s Gate, Chesterfield (near the Pig and Pump), the Safe Space is open every Friday and Saturday night from 8pm to 3am. It is run by staff from Chesterfield Borough Council’s community safety team, paramedics and street pastors, who works alongside Chesterfield Pubwatch and Derbyshire Constabulary to help keep everyone safe.

Night time revellers can visit the Safe Space to charge their phones or get help to get a taxi home. Free hot drinks or water are also available, along with flip-flops for anyone who is ready to kick-off their killer heels.

The team are also on hand to provide first aid, help people who have become separated from their friends, or just offer a listening ear to anyone who may need it.

Support is also available to anyone who may be vulnerable, and the team can provide information and leaflets about a range of issues including alcohol and drugs, domestic violence, sexual assault, homelessness and mental health.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We’re lucky to have so many bars, pubs and restaurants in Chesterfield that residents and visitors can enjoy, and we want to make sure everyone feels supported to be able to enjoy a safe night out.

“The Safe Space has already made a huge impact on the community – whether that be helping partygoers who need to ditch the killer heels and charge their phone, or being a listening ear for someone who may be lonely of vulnerable – there’s support for everyone.

“With the Christmas season fast approaching, we know more and more people will be heading out to enjoy the festivities too, and we hope that it will be reassuring for many that the safe space is on hand to help if they need it.”

Inspector Kara Simpson said: “Chesterfield is a fantastic night out, but we know sometimes things don’t always go to plan.

“If you find that has happened then know that there is somewhere to go and there is someone to give you a cuppa, order a taxi, or simply listen to you.

“Christmas is a time when we know people head out on the town – but we also know it can be a tough period for many – so if it’s just a friend who has had one too many or a stranger who looks like they are having a difficult time, there is a place to go to find some help.”

Local author uncovers hidden history of Chesterfield town centre in latest book

An author is inviting people to explore some of Chesterfield town centre’s hidden gems in his latest book.

Peter Gray has penned ‘A Walk Around Chesterfield’s Hidden Town Centre,’ working with local publisher, Bannister Publications to release the title.

The book takes the reader through a self-guided walk around the town centre, lasting around three miles, but staying within a third of a mile from Rykneld Square.

40 maps and sketches created by Peter as part of the book provide a fresh perspective on the town centre.

In addition to popular landmarks like The Shambles and The Crooked Spire, the walk highlights a wide range buildings, sculptures, alleyways, snickets, and architectural delights.

The walk featured as part of the 2024 Chesterfield Area Walking Festival, and participants said they’d uncovered something new, even after living in Chesterfield for years.

Peter explains: “My aim was to let people find the nooks and crannies of the town that they may not have visited before and to tell a little about the town’s history.

“I’ve been in Chesterfield for over thirty years and always found it a great place to live, work and raise a family. I was initially inspired by a similar style book about the city of York (The Snickelways of York) and I thought I could do something similar for Chesterfield.

“I’ve found the history of Chesterfield fascinating and in 2016 I was part of the group which put together Chesterfield 750 – a medieval pageant day to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Chesterfield. Everyone who has spoken to me about the walk has said that they’ve found out places of information that they were not aware of before.”

Peter will be back in town on November 9th for a Meet the Author event at Waterstones Chesterfield, giving local history lovers the opportunity to speak about the book and Chesterfield’s historic town centre.

Young photographers in Chesterfield invited to join new creative hub

Young photography enthusiasts in Chesterfield are being invited to join a dynamic community where they can explore their passion and get creative.

The Click Photography Club has announced the start of a new term, inviting photographers aged 8-16 to join a community where creativity, learning and fun come together.

Meeting every Thursday during term time from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Hall on the Green, Newbold, Chesterfield, The Click Photography Club offers a hands-on approach to learning photography. Led by experienced photographer Rob Marriott, the club is designed to be both educational and enjoyable, ensuring that every member, whether they’re using a high-end camera or a smartphone, can learn and grow.

Rob Marriott brings over 20 years of photography experience to the club, alongside six years of working with children. Fully DBS-checked and first-aid trained, Rob is committed to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all members.

Rob commented: “Photography is a powerful way for young people to express themselves. Our club is about more than just taking pictures; it’s about fostering creativity, building confidence, and being part of a community.”

Two membership options are available for the club; with in-person and online memberships available.

The in-person membership costs £5 per session when you sign up for the term, or £6 for pay-as-you-go (must register by the morning of the session). These weekly sessions are filled with interactive lessons, creative challenges, and the opportunity to work on personal photography projects.

The online sessions cost £4, and include a PDF guide each week sent via email for those who prefer to learn from home and in their own time. In-person members have free access to all online materials.

This year, the club is focusing on providing a more structured learning experience, ensuring that each member not only learns the technical aspects of photography but also has the chance to apply their knowledge through exciting projects.

  • Project-Based Learning: Each term, members work on individual projects that allow them to apply what they’ve learned. These projects culminate in a showcase, where members can share their work with the group and celebrate their progress.
  • Recognition and Rewards: Members have the opportunity to earn certificates and badges as they reach milestones in their photography journey, adding a sense of achievement to their learning experience.
  • Exclusive Events: In addition to regular meet-ups, members can enjoy discounted photography walks, special workshops, and exclusive events featuring guest photographers and models.

Rob added: “The Click Photography Club is committed to being accessible to everyone. Whether your child is a beginner or has some experience, they’ll find a welcoming community where they can learn at their own pace. Our sessions are designed to cater to all levels of ability, and we ensure that every member feels included and valued.

Chesterfield Menagerie exhibition to celebrate our relationship with animals

A new museum exhibition coming to Chesterfield will celebrate the extraordinary relationship between humans and animals.

Chesterfield Menagerie includes a wide range of items from the Chesterfield Museum collection which show humans connections with animals. It includes a beautiful Brampton salt glaze fish flask, ‘The Plough’ a stunning painting by Joseph Syddall, a wonderful figurine of a Chicken by William Gordon and much more.

There will be fun activities and interactive elements for the whole family to enjoy including handling items, feely boxes, a sound board of animal calls, a magnetic board matching activity and animal related crafts.

The exhibition will be hosted in the Grade 2 listed Assembly Rooms above the Market Hall from Friday 13 September until Tuesday 12 October, and open from 10am to 2.30pm weekdays, and from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays. It is free to enter.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our residents and visitors to learn more about our borough’s history and see some incredible things that have been created right here. We want lots of people to come along and support this exhibition and we’ve made sure that there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

In addition, there will also be a selection of free special events hosted during the exhibition.

Chester the Field Mouse will be visiting the exhibition, meeting fans and posing for pictures on Saturday 14 September from 1pm to 2.15pm.

On Saturday 21 September, Kakou will be hosting a workshop where visitors can create their own art bot. This simple robot will wobble across paper and create a unique drawing. Sessions are being held at 11am, 12pm and 1pm.

As we approach the autumn months visitors will be able to learn more about birds and bees, including how to identify bees, how birds build nests, and they will be able to build their own bird feeder to take away and hang up in their garden. Visitors will be able to take part in this activity on Saturday 28 September from 1pm to 3pm.

The exhibition is hosted in the town centre making it easily accessible by public transport and the venue also includes a lift to ensure that visitors of all abilities can access the exhibition. Further work is being undertaken to provide the exhibition materials in different formats.

The Chesterfield Menagerie exhibition is part of a programme of events and exhibitions that are being funded by Arts Council England.

It aims to ensure that whilst Chesterfield Museum and the Pomegranate Theatre are closed for refurbishment residents and visitors can still connect with our borough’s history and culture.

Chesterfield to welcome new board games café to town centre

Excitement is building for the opening of Chesterfield’s first ever board game café, which is on track to open in the town centre later this year.

Board & Bean will be a location for people of all ages to enjoy locally sourced food, drink and play games. The venue will also be dog friendly.

Renovations are now taking place at the café – formerly the H&F café and tearooms on New Beetwell Street.

Co-owner of the new venue, John McAssey is opening it alongside two colleagues. He commented: “We have grown up in Chesterfield and love the area. Hopefully we will bring something new and exciting to our town.

“Our games library is growing every day and we expect there to be around 500 games on offer at launch on 1st December 2024. We will have a great variety of games from classic pub games to long spanning role playing games.”

Board & Bean will also host special evening events with a focus on tabletop role-playing games, Blood on the Clocktower, miniature painting and more.

The café will boast hand crafted “proper” board game tables, which people will be able to book online. The business will be using new “Guru” software to help customers in making better gaming choices based on the player count, time available and ease of play.

Owners John, Andy and Clint are aiming to turn Board & Bean into a community hub, bringing gamers in Chesterfield and beyond together, allowing people find new games and link up with others. A membership will also be available, which includes discounted food and drink, table charges and event access. Furthermore, the business is looking to work with other like-minded venues in Chesterfield to provide benefits to members.

Renovations are starting soon to ensure disability access throughout the café. A space which is currently partially covered space twill be turned into more indoor space to allow for two rooms to game and socialise.

Nick Hogan, Destination Chesterfield board member commented: “We are very excited for the upcoming opening of Board & Bean in Chesterfield.

“The venue will add to our town’s leisure offer, providing hours of fun and a locally sourced menu for those who visit.

“I’m positive that Board & Bean will be enjoyed by residents and visitors coming in Chesterfield, adding even more vibrancy to our town and giving people another great place to spend their free time with loved ones.”
