Veezu, the UK’s fastest-growing taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) business, nannounces that it has reached a significant milestone surpassing over 1 million app downloads in 2024 alone.

This achievement reflects Veezu’s strong growth and expanding presence in the UK as well as its ongoing success in providing its highly accessible on-demand and prebooked transport solutions to passengers.

Veezu is licensed to operate in over 50 local license authorities in the UK and has likewise rolled out its mobile app in over 50 cities, towns and rural areas across Yorkshire, Merseyside, the Midlands, South Wales, the South West, the Home Counties and Cambridgeshire.

As Veezu’s popularity grows, the company is continuing to transform the way people travel by blending the deep local expertise of traditional taxi and PHV firms with the efficiency and scale of a national platform that equally serves urban and rural communities, setting it apart in the industry. This unique approach has resonated with UK passengers and the one million download benchmark reached since 1st January 2024 reflects this.

The Veezu app serves both business travel and leisure journeys and prioritises an experience designed around passenger choice, guaranteeing a smooth experience from start to finish. The app allows passengers to book and pay for rides using cash or card, offering flexibility that suits diverse preferences and makes booking a journey simple and straightforward.

For corporate clients, Veezu’s app offers seamless business travel management where employees can book rides directly, with charges billed to their company accounts, eliminating personal reimbursement processes. This efficient setup enables businesses to manage travel costs while giving employees a stress-free booking experience.

Founded in Wales in 2013, Veezu is a UK home-grown tech success story that remains deeply engaged with the communities it serves, integrating local partnerships as part of its mission. In December 2024, for every app booking in Wales, Veezu will donate to Childline Cymru, supporting essential services for children in need. Additionally, app bookings in Cambridge throughout 2024 will contribute to a donation to the East Anglia Air Ambulance, supporting critical services for those in urgent need. In October 2024, a nationwide campaign saw Veezu donating, for every booking made to Cerebral Palsy charities.

These initiatives highlight Veezu’s commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families across the UK.

Nathan Bowles, CEO of Veezu, commented on the milestone, “We are incredibly proud to reach one million app downloads this year. This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and making travel as convenient as possible for passengers. We’ve built a booking system that adapts to the needs of all our users by harnessing our strong tech platform, focus on user experience and our significant footprint.

“The growing reach of our app and our operations is buoyed not only by the continued positive reception to our app but by the appetite in the market for prebooked and on-demand PHV travel solutions across the breadth of the UK.”

Chesterfield Champions get into the festive spirit

Businesses in our town’s network of Chesterfield Champions have been busy getting into the festive spirit, with several initiatives to support our people and communities.

Find out more about what our organisations have been up to below!

Chesterfield FC spreads festive cheer at Ashgate Hospice

Ashgate Hospice - Chesterfield FC Visiting

The players from Chesterfield Football Club brought plenty of smiles and Christmas cheer to Ashgate Hospice on Thursday 5 December, during their much-loved annual visit.

The day began in the hospice’s Day Services area, where players joined patients for festive arts and crafts, including Christmas card making. They also took part in a light-hearted debate about the best chocolates in a Celebrations box – with the Spireites unanimously agreeing that Bounty is not a fan favourite!

Next, the team visited Ashgate’s specialist Inpatient Unit to spend time with patients, chatting and sharing stories with them during the visit. One special visitor, Daisy the Poodle Shih Tzu, was especially delighted with all the attention from the players.

Before finishing their visit, the players took a tour of Ashgate’s newly renovated Day Services area, set to reopen early next year. The updated space will provide enhanced support for people living with life-limiting and incurable illnesses and the people important to them.

Spireites captain Jamie Grimes said: “It’s been a couple of years I’ve been here and it’s great to see all of the new facilities going in and all of the money that has been donated by local companies.

“It’s really eye-opening to see how kind people can be and the kind work that everyone does here. People seem so comfortable and as happy as they can be in their situation.

“It’s nice to have a joke, bring a smile to a face and hopefully take their mind off of what they are going through.

“It’s not nice to see people struggling but it gives you a bit of perspective with football and makes you appreciate what you have got.

“It’s been my third year coming now [to Ashgate Hospice] and I keep seeing the place get better and that is important thanks to the donations that they get.

“I can only commend the people and the countless companies that have donated to the new facility and it’s a credit to the amazing work that people do here and the amazing kindness and generosity of the people in the community.”

To make the day even more magical, the club brought Christmas sacks filled with chocolates and biscuits to share with patients and staff.

Ali Ward-Foster, Partnerships Manager at Ashgate Hospice, shared: “We’re so grateful to Chesterfield FC for visiting us each Christmas. It’s such a special day, and the joy they bring to our patients, those important to them, and our staff and volunteers is just incredible.

“Watching them take the time to chat and laugh with everyone is heartwarming—it’s a reminder of how amazing our community is when we come together.”

Right now, Ashgate is only able to operate 15 out of its 21 inpatient beds. As a result, not all patients who require hospice care are able to access it, meaning some families are missing out on the essential support and special moments that hospices offer, especially during the festive period.

To support Ashgate this Christmas and help ensure more people can access vital care, please visit www.ashgatehospice.org.uk/christmas-appeal or by calling 01246 567 250.

This initiative eases logistical challenges for families, ensuring that young patients can attend cooking classes without added stress. By removing transportation barriers, Veezu enables children to fully benefit from this therapeutic programme, contributing to their recovery and well-being.

The Blend Culinary Foundation, in collaboration with Sheffield Children’s Hospital, offers cooking classes designed for children and young people under the hospital’s care. Bolsover shines bright with light show and lantern parade

Lantern parade

Junction Arts brought two illuminating events to Bolsover; Bright Winter Nights at Bolsover Castle and the Bolsover Lantern Parade, which celebrated its 30th birthday.

On Friday, the 29th of November, Bright Winter Nights saw over a thousand people flock to the immersive light show at Bolsover Castle. The sell-out event included three art installations that were co-created with the community and professional artists. Know Your Neighbourhood in the old riding school saw Bolsover District residents’ artwork come to life in a film created by national artist William Lindley and projected onto the stable walls.

Mirror, Mirror, created by Derbyshire theatre company, Babbling Vagabonds and projection artists Illuminos, featured the work of students from Bolsover School. It was an interactive piece, with visitors using mirrors to find characters and become part of the artwork.

In Full Colour, a digital projection onto the Little Castle was the event’s centrepiece. Projection artist Rebecca Smith worked with youth members of Derbyshire LGBT+, which includes LGBTQIA+ young people from around Chesterfield, to create an inspiring immersive experience that combined history with contemporary digital art.
Local resident Michelle Ward said: “It was amazing, we really enjoyed it. I think William Cavendish would have approved as it was his party palace and he liked to show it off.”

On Saturday, hundreds of people joined the Bolsover Lantern Parade with their lanterns and thousands more lined the streets to see one of the UK’s biggest and longest-running light processions.

Following a month of lantern-making workshops in the community and local schools, just under 600 lanterns were made for the parade, with 400 taking part on the night. Among the hundreds of creations, there was a giant Stitch, a beautiful turtle, a rocket, a jellyfish, a car, a sausage dog, lots of Christmas trees and two huge dragons!

The parade marked the finale of the Bolsover Winter Festival, a weekend of festive fun, which includes a traditional Christmas market and a day of festive food and entertainment in the town centre.

Chesterfield-based charity Junction Arts organised the events in partnership with Bolsover District Council, Old Bolsover Town Council, English Heritage, Bolsover Place Board, PlatformThirty1 and other community partners.

Junction Arts Managing Director, Emily Bowman said: “Wow, what a weekend we’ve had in Bolsover! The two events celebrated art, technology and local people, with every piece of content co-created with the community and professional artists. These events shine a light on the creativity and strong community spirit that exists in this brilliant town, and we feel so proud to be part of it.

“Thank you to our funders, supporters, partners, volunteers, artists, and everyone who made a lantern or turned out to support these fabulous events.”

Popular TV and comedy star launches new series of Ashgate Hospice grief podcast

ED BYRNE image stood against a wall smiling

Television and comedy star Ed Byrne recently appeared in the newest series of Ashgate Hospice’s podcast, which explores frank and honest conversations about life, death and grief.

Ed, known for appearing on panel shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats and his stand-up comedy, was interviewed for the first episode of The Life and Death Podcast.

It comes amidst the world tour of his show Tragedy Plus Time, inspired by the bereavement he faced following the death of his younger brother.

Ed sat down with podcast host Stephen Rumford ahead of his show in Buxton to discuss his career, his brother’s life and the success of the critically acclaimed show.

The first episode of the fifth series, featuring Ed, launched on 6th May as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week.

Episodes featuring other death and grief experts and commentators will go live every fortnight.

Stephen Rumford, host of The Life and Death Podcast and Senior Physiotherapist at Ashgate Hospice, said: “I don’t think we could have imagined that when we started back in 2020, we’d go on to launch five series of the podcast.

“This time, we’ve expanded our range topics and guests, and our six latest guests are a wonderful addition to the growing resource that the podcast represents.

“From a candid conversation with Ed Byrne to an insightful discussion with TikTok’s ‘Hospice Nurse Julie’, we have a wide range of guests offering differing expertise. You’re sure to learn something new with each episode.

“We hope the podcast provides a useful resource to anyone who is bereaved and people who might be curious about the subject.

“I hope all of our listeners enjoy the considered opinions of our guests as they share their unique experiences with us.”

In the podcast seasons so far, Stephen speaks with writers, doctors and people who have experienced end of life care to discuss their unique relationships, hospice life, and how death affects the living.

In the latest series, Dr. Katie Lawlor, an animal bereavement expert and pet loss psychologist based in San Francisco, California, joins as one of the guests.

She was training to be a clinical psychologist before she realised there was very little, if any, support networks for people suffering following the death of a pet.

Others include Dr Julie McFadden, known to millions on social media as ‘Hospice Nurse Julie’; she cares for palliative and end of life patients and uses TikTok to address some of death’s biggest misconceptions.

The Natural Death Centre’s Josefine Speyer, author of Modern Loss, Rebeca Soffer, and renowned philosopher Simon Critchley will also feature in the new season.

Episodes will be released on Mondays every fortnight from 6th May! You can listen to episodes from all five series of The Life and Death Podcast online or by searching for ‘Ashgate Hospice’ on all streaming platforms.

Veezu supports Cash for Kids charity

eezu supports Cash for Kids’ Holiday Hunger appeal - group of people holding large cheque

Veezu, a private hire operator covering Chesterfield and South Yorkshire, has donated £500 to the local arm of Cash for Kids in support of Cash for Kids Day on 2 May.

The donation was made through Funded by Veezu, an initiative in which local charities and sports teams can apply for funding and grants, set up to improve the communities in which Veezu operates.

Cash for Kids supports children and young people affected by poverty, abuse, neglect, life-limiting illness, and those with additional needs. Based across 22 areas in the UK, Cash for Kids is a grant giving charity that helps community groups, charitable organisations, schools and individual cases. The latest figures from the End Child Poverty Coalition show that 1 in 3 local children are living in poverty and, in some areas, it is as high as 36%.

2 May marked Cash for Kids Day, where organisations came together to raise as much as possible for the cause, with a particular focus on combating holiday hunger to make sure all children have access to a hot meal during the holidays.

Veezu has donated £500 from its regional areas of Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Portsmouth, bringing the total donation to £3000. According to statistics given by Cash for Kids, it’s predicted that £3000 will help 60 children in need.

Lisa Sullivan, Charity Manager at Cash for Kids North, West and South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, said: “We are so grateful to Veezu for supporting us across the UK in six regions for Cash for Kids Day. For the passengers of Veezu, they can feel confident in their choice, as they will be helping disadvantaged children access activities and food during the school holidays. For many children it will be their only daily meal. The generosity of companies like Veezu, as well as donations from the general public, help us help children that need it the most.”

Sacha Skinner, Regional Marketing Manager at Veezu, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Cash for Kids once again. All children deserve access to a hot meal, whether it’s the holidays or not, and we are glad to donate what we can and make a difference to children living in poverty.”

New apprentice joins DBCP following career change

Charlotte Gladwin DBCP

Charlotte Gladwin has said goodbye to retail management and has embarked on a brand-new career in building control thanks to an apprenticeship.

Previously working as a store manager at a pet shop for three years, Charlotte (21) now joins DBCP as a Level 4 Building Control Surveyor apprentice.

As an apprentice Charlotte will undertake practical on-the-job learning at construction sites throughout Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, working alongside DBCP’s team of experienced and knowledgeable Building Control Inspectors.

During her five-year apprenticeship, she will also combine her practical training with completing industry-recognised exams, which will ultimately see her qualify as a Building Control Surveyor.

As a qualified Building Control Surveyor, Charlotte will have responsibility for completing site inspections independently and ensuring buildings are safe, energy efficient and adhere to building control standards.

A former pupil of Wales High School in Rotherham, Charlotte entered retail following her A’ Levels. Keen to move out of retail and, with an interest in construction and the outdoors, she identified Building Control as the ideal profession in which to build a career.

She explained: “I really enjoyed studying Geography, Psychology and Business at A-Level and, together with my love of the outdoors, I felt that a career in building control aligned with my future ambitions.  At DBCP I’ll be part of the process that creates positive change in the local landscapes for our communities.

“Being in the position to check that building work is correct and architectural drawings have been followed is a significant responsibility. I’m really excited by the fact that at the end of my training, assignments and intense exams, I’ll be carrying out these tasks and be trusted to do so.”

DBCP’s long-running apprenticeship programme is helping the business attract local young people who want to progress their careers within the field of building control. The company currently employs seven apprentices who are at different stages of their training, including degree level.

“The opportunities provided by the team at DBCP are so exciting. I really enjoying being out on site and I’ve already found the team so supportive,” she added.

Delighted to welcome Charlotte to the team, David Pratt, Building Control Manager at DBCP, said: “Building Control Surveyors are in high demand. We look forward to sharing our industry knowledge and best-practice with Charlotte as she embarks upon her five-year training. I know from personal experience that building control offers a long and varied career. I am certainly never bored!”

Sponsored Queen’s Park swim raises more than £7,000

Swimming instructors and pupils with representatives from the charities

A sponsored swim at Queen’s Parks Sports Centre has raised £7,543 which will be shared between two charities.

Around 120 children who take part in swimming lessons at Queen’s Park Sports Centre and the Healthy Living Centre took part in the sponsored swim in October which was raising money for Parkinsons UK and Ashgate Hospice.

Every child in the swimming programme was invited and they all set their own target distances for the swim. In just 12 hours the swimming instructors swam around 42 miles which is the same distance as swimming across the English Channel to France and back to England

The money will be shared between Parkinsons UK and Ashgate Hospice, the hospice was selected in memory of beloved swimming teacher Rachel Pye who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Councillor Jonathan Davies, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “I want to thank everyone who organised and participated in the sponsored swim, they raised an incredible amount of money that will be going to some very worthwhile causes.”

Redbrik Foundation helps Cavendish Cancer Care provide essential services with generous cash boost

Redbrik Foundation Cavendish Cancer Care

Cavendish Cancer Care will now be able to provide essential therapy for children and young people in need of support, thanks to a generous cash boost from the Redbrik Foundation.

Each month, the Foundation selects one charity from the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire area to receive a donation to help them continue their contribution to the community.

In light of receiving October’s grant, Cavendish Cancer Care can now offer art therapy, play therapy and counselling to young people whose lives have been affected by the illness.

Hannah Williams, Fundraiser at Cavendish Cancer Care, said: “A cancer diagnosis within the family can have a huge impact on children, which is why it is so important they can turn to Cavendish, as a safe space to relax and understand their emotions.

“Katie, whose eight-year-old son was supported by our Children and Young People’s Service when his dad had leukaemia, told us the support and care her son received made a difference to her entire family, with unconditional care, attention and kindness that have helped him work through his anxieties. It is families like Katie’s where this gift from the Redbrik Foundation will make such a difference.”

Every month a different member of the Redbrik team is set to nominate a cause close to their heart, helping them give something back to the local community.

This month, Property Consultant Jacob Bailey named Cavendish Cancer Care as his charity of choice. He said: “I am constantly inspired by the amazing work they do and the support they offer to local families and individuals who are facing some of the most challenging times of their lives. It is an honour to be able to help them continue their fantastic work.”

Since it was established in 2020, the Redbrik Foundation has donated tens of thousands to local charitable causes, including Ashgate Hospice, Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Whirlow Hall Farm, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Paces, St Luke’s Hospice, Fairplay and Pathways of Chesterfield.

If your charity is interested in support from the Redbrik Foundation, contact Director David Cooper by email at david.cooper@redbrik.co.uk.

Chesterfield taxi firm announces rebrand

Chesterfield’s leading private hire service City Taxis is changing its name to Veezu, following their acquisition by the Veezu Group earlier this year.

This rebrand marks a significant milestone in their journey towards revolutionising transportation services in Chesterfield and neighbouring areas.

Established in the 1980s, City Taxis began with 34 cars and a paper booking system. Over the years, City Taxis has grown exponentially and extended its reach across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, largely thanks to strategic acquisitions, including the well-loved Chesterfield taxi company Club Taxis, in 2016.

In February 2023, City Taxis joined forces with Veezu, an alliance that promises not only a name change but a complete transformation of the way driver-partners connect with passengers and their communities.

Veezu’s Group Innovation Director, Scott Ashmore, expressed his excitement, saying: “The rebrand is more than a name change. We are firmly putting the Veezu name on the map in Chesterfield and are committed to serving the local community. We’re introducing new technology to make it easier for people to access transportation and are building on our hyperlocal activities to ensure we remain at the heart of our communities.”

Whilst passengers can call the usual Chesterfield number 01246 222 222, Veezu is introducing a new mobile app so that passengers can skip call queues and book their rides in a matter of seconds. Veezu offers multiple payment options, including Google Pay, Apple Pay, AirPay, card, or cash, making travel even more convenient for passengers.

Veezu is proud to be the UK’s fastest-growing private hire technology platform, with a track record of helping passengers in local communities complete an average of one ride every two seconds in 2022.

As part of its rebranding efforts, Veezu is excited to unveil an extensive marketing campaign entitled ‘Smarter Local Rides’ in the Derbyshire PHV market. The campaign also introduces its ‘funded by Veezu’ local community initiatives to residents across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

Driver-partners, local businesses and passengers are invited to embrace the Veezu identity and continue its mission to provide safe, efficient, and affordable transportation services to the communities of Chesterfield and beyond.

The new Veezu app is available for download at www.appsend.me/veezu

Regional taxi firm joins forces with technology provider to improve customer experience

City Taxis has joined forces with Veezu, the UK’s leading data-driven tech-enabled mobility platform to the private hire sector.

The acquisition is an exciting opportunity for City to offer an improved private hire experience for driver-partners and their passengers. Passengers can still book rides with City Taxis on their free booking app or using the usual City Taxis’ phone numbers. The same friendly City driver-partners will continue to pick up passengers in a City Taxis branded vehicle and take them safely to their destination with the same fares paid as usual.

Launched in 2013, Veezu invest heavily in technology and infrastructure to ensure regional brands like City Taxis remain at the heart of the community, without needing to sacrifice anything in terms of the passenger experience.

Arnie Singh, Managing Director of City Taxis, said: “City Taxis has grown from a small family-run business with 34 cars to a business with access to more than 2,000 driver-partners. We help move millions of people each year, and I am humbled to have played a vital role in this growth.

“I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey so far, from staff and driver-partners to businesses and riders.

“We are incredibly enthusiastic about what joining Veezu means for City Taxis moving forward. I am confident that joining a larger business with a hyper-local focus will help to keep local taxi companies in demand without compromising on technology or service levels.”

Nathan Bowles, CEO of Veezu, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Arnie and City Taxis into the Veezu Group. City Taxis is a high-quality business in Sheffield and the surrounding areas and we’re looking forward to continuing to provide #smarterlocalrides to the community. I’m really pleased that Arnie will join our management team at Veezu, playing a pivotal role in the next growth stage of our business.”
