Shop Indie expands to mark 5th anniversary in Chesterfield

A unique independent gift shop has marked five years of trading in Chesterfield town centre by revealing an exciting expansion.

Shop Indie opened its doors on Steeplegate at Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in 2019 to celebrate the work of makers from across the UK.

After creating greetings cards and other gifts themselves for 10 years, owners Lisa & John had met lots of amazingly talented makers both locally and from across the UK.

They made a wide range of gifts including jewellery, prints, enamel pins, chocolate, soaps, candles, fashion accessories, greetings cards and much more.

Since they opened Shop Indie have stocked gifts from over 250 makers across the UK – many of them who create beautiful gifts from their kitchen tables, making each piece by hand to create something truly special. They also have a growing number of local makers from North Derbyshire and Sheffield.

Whilst celebrating 5 years of trading at Vicar Lane, Shop Indie is also in the process of expanding the gift shop upstairs, providing much-needed space for stocking more products created by indie makers. The new space will also provide room for small events, exhibitions and workshops. Lisa and John have also confirmed that they are signing a 5 year renewal on their shop lease, meaning that they will be celebrating many more birthdays to come at Steeplegate.

The pair commented: “Having both grown up in Chesterfield we’re proud to be a part of the wonderful group of independent businesses in the town centre. It is a really supportive group of people which makes running a business here so much easier. The location is lovely too, with Chesterfield being situated right on the doorstep of the Peak District. We have lots of tourists as well as locals who shop with us for products celebrating the local area such as Chesterfield fridge magnets, Peak District postcards and Derbyshire prints.

“We’ve been trading in Chesterfield for 5 years now, and the town centre has such a wide range of independent businesses. Some that have been here for decades, some are newer businesses, but each one bringing something different.

“Over the last 5 years we’ve found that our customers have been very supportive of small independent businesses like ours, but to be able to maintain such a varied selection of businesses it is vital that people in and around Chesterfield use them and support them in any way they can. Whether this is by spending their money with them, or even simply by interacting with their social media and letting others know about them.

Nick Hogan, Destination Chesterfield Board Member added: “It’s truly inspiring to see Shop Indie thriving and expanding after years of success in our town centre.

“Independent shops are the heart and soul of our high streets, offering something unique to both residents and visitors. I encourage everyone to continue supporting these small businesses that are vital to our local community.”

Lisa and John are inviting customers to visit Shop Indie on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October to celebrate with them. They will be offering all customers who spend £10 to have a go on their spinner for either a discount or a free goody bag.

More new openings at Vicar Lane as centre reaches over 90% occupancy

As it heads into the all-important festive period, Vicar Lane will have over 90% occupancy rate in time for Christmas, with five new openings at the scheme this year.

The centre team’s new leasing strategy has involved targeting local independent businesses to re-enliven the previously struggling street, Steeplegate, as an independent quarter. This has led to three new independents acquiring space at the scheme this year.

Two tenants have moved from Market Hall in Chesterfield to the centre to expand into bigger units. For sustainable toy shop, The Little Ark, this has resulted in a 200-480% increase in sales week-on-week. For Spirits & Beer Specialist, Street Spirit, their opening day saw 300 visitors come to the store and it has been positive ever since with a large increase in visitors to the shop compared to their shop in Market Hall.

Coffee shop, Coffee #1 officially opened on Thursday 30th November in the prominent unit by Vicar Lane’s event space on St James Square. They serve a range of hot drinks, coffees and pastries, which has proven very popular with the local community.

Two clothing stores also opened at the scheme. Vintage clothing store, Y Not Vintage opened in June and designer clothing store, Brand Runner opened on 2nd December.

These recent openings will see over 90% of units filled by the end of 2023. This includes two units which have been utilised for Vicar Lane’s Christmas campaign. One unit has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland Christmas Grotto and another has become Santa’s Elf Workshop where an Elf Training Academy and festive crafts take place.

Shaun Brown, Centre Manager said “I am delighted in the interest in Vicar Lane, both from visitors and potential occupiers. We have really focussed our efforts on welcoming independents to the scheme this year as well as supporting our current tenants. The management team aim to provide a great experience for everyone here so it’s fantastic to see the hard work and changes have paid off.”

Spireites launch new LGBTQ+ supporters group

Rainbow Spireites

Chesterfield Football Club is now working alongside a new supporters group, aimed at improving the matchday experience for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The group was formed by supporters, Darren Yates and Ellie Yates, with the aim of creating a safe space and ensuring everyone feels welcome at the SMH Group Stadium.

Darren explained: “Our main aim is to be that safe space for LGBTQ+ supporters, who don’t want to come to the game on their own.

“It is also to be a critical friend of the club to help them reach into the community more.

“A group like this can really help fans feel welcome at games, and not have to worry about feeling alone or unwelcome.

“Everyone at the club has been brilliant and totally supportive. We were at Chesterfield Pride and the response was really good. People were saying that they were really happy to see the group being formed.”

Outlining plans for the future, Ellie said: “We’re hoping that now we’ve started getting a few members on board, we can start doing some meet-ups and talk to our members to see what they want to get out of the group as well.

“We’ve joined a regional alliance with some LGBTQ+ supporters’ groups. At the moment, we’re just letting people know we’re there and once we’ve got more members, we’ll look at pre-match meet-ups to encourage fans who might not feel safe enough going to games.”

Chesterfield Royal Hospital awarded ‘Trailblazer’ status from Race Equality Matters

Chesterfield Royal Hospital

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the prestigious Trailblazer status from Race Equality Matters, a not-for-profit organisation seeking to improve racial equality.

Trailblazers are organisations that are successfully taking action and making an impact on race inequality and Chesterfield was selected for work on The Big Promise solution, where people and organisations make a public commitment to create meaningful and positive change.

Race Equality Matters Trailblazer status is determined by an independent panel of experts – all with lived experience. It aims to identify meaningful impact, keep momentum going, inspire others and evidence an organisations commitment to tackling race inequality.

Becoming a Trailblazer means that the work Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CRH) has done to implement The Big Promise has resulted in significant change and made an impact across the breadth of the entire organisation. This is a step that contributes to their aim to successfully address racial inequality and become a more diverse, inclusive and equal organisation.

Hailey Pottinger, Co-Chair of the Race Equality and Cultural Inclusion Network at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: The Big Promise helped us to create an inclusive environment where everyone could get involved and talk to us about Race Equality. By giving the Big Promise a central focus, especially as part of Race Equality Week, we created a positive statement and encouraged conversations with colleagues and members of the public. The aim was to increase the understanding that race equality is everyone’s business and secure buy-in and a sense of personal responsibility.

“At Chesterfield, a lot of work is being done to raise awareness of anti-racism (and how that is different to simply not being racist). This work is laying the foundations for conversations around racism and feeding into the creation of our Anti-Racism Strategy. There was a big focus on as part of Race Equality Week.

Kevin Sargen, Medical Director and Race Equality Network Exec Sponsor, at Chesterfield Royal NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are pleased to be highlighted as trailblazers; however, we recognise that this is an ongoing process and there is a lot more we all need to do as an organisation and as individuals to ensure that that we not only highlight this agenda but actively drive action and change. As a Board of Directors, we have made a commitment to tackling race inequality and to be accountable for taking actions. It is something that is very important to all of us and to our colleagues across the organisation.”
