Recognition for Robert Woodhead Ltd following work on Bolsover housing projects

Robert Woodhead Ltd has been shortlisted for two awards, following work carried out in the Bolsover area.

Working alongside Bolsover District Council in bringing new homes to the area, the construction firm has been recognised in two categories by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE).

The first award that the partnership has been shortlisted for is the Best Housing, Regeneration or New Build Initiative. The entry, Bolsover Homes New Build Initiative, details the success of the Bolsover Homes partnerships as it stands at the midway point of the 4 year agreement in the construction of high quality homes, the innovations within the programme as well as social, economic and environmental value that has been delivered to the local community.

The second award is the Best Public / Private Partnership, which focuses on the collaborative nature of the Bolsover Homes scheme as a key reason for the programme’s success.

This achievement follows the partnership also reaching the finalist stage for the Constructing Excellence East Midlands 2022, where they were finalised for the Integration & Collaborative Working Award.

Mathew Hall, Marketing Manager at Robert Woodhead Limited commented: “Being shortlisted for an APSE Award is a fantastic achievement, there were over 300 submissions from across the UK, all highlighting the very best of public sector excellence.

“To be recognised as finalists in two categories is fantastic and it demonstrates the exceptional work Bolsover District Council is delivering in terms of investing in high quality, sustainable housing and social value.  Well done everyone and good luck in the final!”

Robert Woodhead Ltd sustainability initiative scoops prestigious award

Robert Woodhead Ltd have won the Environmental or Community Initiative of the Year 2022 at the National Federation of Builder’s Construction of Excellence awards.

The company’s ‘Going Beyond Green’  initiative detailed efforts including:

  • The company’s 10 year Climate Action Framework which will lead them to their goal of becoming a climate positive contractor with zero single use plastic on site by December 2029.
  • The ‘Future Home‘ product which has been developed to meet 2025 building regulations today and can achieve NET Zero carbon. The results will be accelerated delivery, up to an 80% reduction in carbon emissions and up to £175 in tenant bill savings.
  • On-site carbon monitoring.
  • Launching an EV scheme for employees and progressing a vision towards an all-electric Fleet.

The event took place at the Chelsea Harbour Hotel in London on Thursday 8th April, with attendance from Business Services Director, Tom Woodhead, and Janine Broderick, People Development Director. The company also invited Estimator Scott Wilkinson and Assistant Project Manager Liam Thorpe in recognition for their great work they have done for the environmental efforts of the company.

Scott was instrumental in Woodhead’s support for the community woodland, securing 1,000 trees to be planted as part of the national pathfinding project in Bolsover. You can read more about this initiative here.

Liam completed his dissertation on embodied carbon and collaborated with Woodhead Group client, Nottingham City Homes, to undertake a focus group/presentation with their new build team. He encouraged Nottingham City Homes to consider the impact of embodied carbon in their projects and how to reduce it. Liam’s learning was applied to Woodhead’s Eastglade site, which consists of 106 homes, where the team prevented 116 Tonnes of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere. Subsequently, the carbon footprint of the foundations was reduced by 76%.

Partnership agreement will develop the next generation of construction experts

Construction company Robert Woodhead Limited (part of the Woodhead Group) and Chesterfield College have entered into an agreement to work together on a range of initiatives to help the next generation discover more about careers in construction and develop the skills they need.

The Learning Partnership Agreement builds on the long-standing relationship between the two organisations. It formalises the way they will work together in the future, building on the successful apprenticeship and work experience schemes they already have in place. It also introduces some new initiatives which will bring more work experience and training opportunities, taster days for school pupils and work around encouraging women into construction.

Janine Borderick, People Development Director at Robert Woodhead Ltd said:

“This agreement is really important to help us grow the talent we need for the future. This will help us to reach people outside of our apprenticeship programme. We want to share our experience of the industry with people and give them an introduction to the wide range of career paths that are available in construction. We want people to come and see what we do and, together with the college, we will be shouting about the opportunities there are to work in the industry.”

Aaron Wathall, is 4 months into his Level 3 Built Environment Technical apprenticeship with Robert Woodhead Ltd. During his day of study at the college he witnessed the signing of the agreement. He explained how the company are helping him to discover all the opportunities available in the construction industry and shape his career. He said:

“I am really enjoying my apprenticeship. It is really diverse. I am learning about different aspects of construction, meeting people from across the company and gaining a lot more confidence. I have had support from everyone from IT to Site Managers. They have showed me new things and been really patient. Someone is always there to answer my questions.”

Terry Brickles, Curriculum Operations Manager for Construction said:

“Robert Woodhead Ltd have always valued the education and training we offer to provide them with a skilled workforce. They know that by working alongside us to support school and college students we will be able to pool resources to encourage the next generation into construction. I am excited about the initiatives we have planned and I look forward to helping more construction experts of the future develop the skills they need to be successful.”

Local housebuilder Woodhead Homes named best in the UK

Woodhead Homes have been named as the National Federation of Builders (NFB) UK House Builder of the Year (delivering under 35 units per year).

The company is part of Robert Woodhead Group ltd, which is currently working alongside Whittam Cox Architects on Chesterfield’s Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre, along with various projects across the East Midlands and the rest of the UK.

Woodhead Homes have created an exclusive and already award-winning development, Rufford Pastures, in the sought-after village of Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. It is a bespoke and luxurious of collection of just 64 homes.

Leo Woodhead, Director, said: “Being shortlisted against national competition is an achievement in itself. The win signifies the huge amount of effort and visionary thinking that has gone into Rufford Pastures. It recognises our unique design ethos and that there is an appetite to improve new build housing through exceptional design.”

Every detail in the design of Rufford Pastures has been carefully considered with a real focus on quality, space and sustainability. From sourcing the very best materials and products from natural oak doors to beautiful bespoke designer kitchens, made locally by Colour Hill to the cutting-edge sustainability to the clever design of the homes and the wider development.

Leo continued, “we have been overwhelmed by the flurry of demand as people re-evaluate what is important to them in a home. Be that space for home working, a generously sized home, a bustling local high street with independent shops, a rural surrounding with great walks, bike riding trails or simply the chance to connect with nature at Sherwood Forest.”

The homes have been designed by Joseph Kemish Architects who have demonstrated that with careful integration of architecture and landscape an exciting and very personal development can be created which encourages social interaction, a sense of belonging and pride of place.

The flurry of demand has in part been spurred on by the Stamp Duty holiday, providing buyers with savings of up to £8,000. The team are now down to their final few homes and expect to sell out very quickly following the news of their second award.

Recognition for Woodhead Group’s commercial Manager

As a challenging 2020 drew to a close, Michael Broadhurst, Commercial Manager at Robert Woodhead Ltd, was the pin point of positivity and encouragement for the future. A major achievement for Michael was receiving the G4C Future Leader Award at the East Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards in December.

Michael first joined the company as part of his Degree at Sheffield Hallam in Building Surveying. The sandwich course he embarked on enabled him to build on his skills as a Trainee Project Co-ordinator on a 1 year placement.

Michael impressed so much during his placement that the company offered him the chance to continue his degree part time whilst continuing employment. He was part of a number of award winning projects such as the Cross Street Eco Town development whist completing his degree, graduating with a 1st Class Honours.

Michael has adopted the businesses values of Robert Woodhead ltd; Collaboration, Respect, Courage and Integrity, which are major elements to flourishing within his role.

He said: “It’s the team work approach, living and breathing our values and the collaboration between one another which ends in great results. The company invested in me that I am hugely grateful for and that’s a testament to them and the belief in their employees.

“The hard work by all is prominent throughout the company. Coaching and mentoring one another gives others the confidence for progression. Everyone joins together to allow collaborative progression and growth as a whole.”

His clear work ethic portrayed throughout his role enabled Michael, when he was 26 years old, to scoop the Young Achiever Award back in 2016 at the Constructing Excellence Awards.

Since this achievement Michael has received outstanding mentoring and support from Chris Tutin and Alistair Taylor, both Associate Directors of Robert Woodhead Limited.

Chris commented on Michael’s progression and determination to succeed within his role: “I have had the privilege of working alongside Michael for a number of years. As a Project Co-Ordinator he showed an immense amount of promise. I am glad to say that through his own hard work that promise has seen him develop into a substantially competent QS and more recently a deserved Commercial Manager.

“I am proud to call Michael a colleague and friend and am so pleased that his dedication has been recognised with this award. As the title suggests, I expect Michael to become a Future Leader within our industry one day.”

Michael believes the key to adopting and pursuing the correct skills to become a leader all branches from collaboration. The “honesty and trust” which is developed between colleagues is a vital piece in the jigsaw to becoming a confident and respected leader.

Shanice Wallace, Quantity Surveyor at Robert Woodhead Ltd commented on the mentoring she received from Michael over the years: “Michael is a great mentor, he allows the learning process to flow naturally and is always there to provide support when needed. His expertise has definitely been invaluable in my journey to becoming a Quantity Surveyor.”

A small piece of advice from Michael for others starting their journey in the industry was: “You can’t be a successful leader, if you don’t have a successful team working collaboratively. Go that extra mile and take the time to continually develop yourself and encourage others around you to flourish.”
